They threaten to charge you if you're late (a very likely possibility considering city traffic), but leave you sitting in the waiting room if you're early, racking up additional parking fees. read more

This place is like pregnant lady haven. Ashley and Katie are amazing! They remembered my name after the first appointment. I thought I was just another face to them. Ashley even remembered off the top of her head how far along I was. I did my research when it came time to choose OB vs midwife and I'm SOOOOOOO glad I signed up to see the midwives. Midwives concentrate on the special topic of pregnancy, birth, and post partum recovery. OB is a trained surgeon for generally anything going on "down there." Most childbirths don't need surgery. They're definitely related and a lot of their jobs overlap, but midwives are specialized nurses that spend overall more time with their patients as supports and guides. Midwives are the ones that deliver and catch the babies at NW hospital. OBGYNs are surgeons. They don't catch the babies; they perform surgery. They are there to perform surgery when something goes wrong. They did not train as in-depth as midwives when it comes to helping you survive those 9 months beforehand. As the hospital nurse very politely whispered to me when I sat in my hospital bed after 15 hours of labor..."Let's hope you will never need to see the OBGYN. If you do, it means something during labor went wrong." TL;DR - If you want preggo sage lady experts COME HERE! When I was there, there were 6 midwives on staff rotation. They're all extremely knowledgeable. I saw Deborah, Yaseem, Cindy, and Victoria the most often and she was never judgemental even though I asked (looking back now) the stupidest "questions." Everyone was so patient and open-minded. They respect women's bodies and do everything with faith that our bodies are stronger than what we believe to be (it's very true.) My appointments sometimes ran long because I'm long-winded but they always let me stick around. I would have slapped myself if I had to listen to me for a hour! When I needed to be induced (baby was 11+ days overdue) Victoria Swarthout saw how terrified and concerned I was so she squeezed me into a morning appointment on the date of my induction so I could ask her ALL the questions and address all of my concerns... which @ 42 weeks pregnant as a first time Mom during a pandemic just sounded like this "WHY why whyyyy me!!! Why won't this baby come!!!" Oh forgot, it was the start of the pandemic. Yeah I gave birth in March, the very same week things went into lockdown. New hospital policies were being put in place and my anxiety level skyrocketed. I'm first generation Chinese American of course, and a little bit of a hypochondriac so the pandemic got me off on a very rough start. I was afraid of discrimination (none at all found here) and I was afraid of changing hospital policies. On top of the unexpected induction and having to find a doula last minute. I was literally being induced with a hand UP my cervix while trying to hire a new doula on the phone...ugh! Lol. The induction and labor was 35+ hours. Very very very long. And we were all ready to give up...get that C-section no one wanted...when Victoria calmly said "You know what? Let's give it another hour." I wanted to cry. I hadn't eaten in over 24 hours and I was going to end up on the surgeons table after all that waiting and exhaustion. Victoria gave me as much time as she could. 1 hour or 2 later, I suddenly felt a crazy need to push. So she came back to check my dilation and suddenly I went from 7 to full 10! How did she know I just needed some time? Time to PUSH!! YASSSSS! Pushing was the best part. That took no time at all. And suddenly I had a perfect baby on my chest. No c-section. Pure miracle. All thanks to the patience and faith the midwives have. No medical intervention, no pressure, no rush, no panic. A woman's body is truly, truly a miracle blessed by nature. We were designed to give birth and on our own body's timeline. Post partum support with midwives was awesome too. They vetted for post partum depression, checked on my perninal tear, talked and administered birth control. I am basically going to use the midwives as my general doctor. Did you know they do that? Yup! You can do your annual check ups with them :) Anyways this is probably the most personal Yelp review ever hahaha. Look at the handiwork that Victoria caught on that first day of spring at 3 am. After several surprise positive test results, I was seeking an in person prenatal appointment within the week; the UW Shoreline office was the only option I had. I booked the initial appointment with a plan to move my appointments to the Mill Creek location, however that never happened because the Shoreline location works directly with UW Midwives NW and I really like how the UW Shoreline made efforts to accommodate the maternity patients (separate waiting area, priority lab testing, and the ease of making appointments.) Although having another baby wasn't in our plans, my husband and I knew we wanted a different experience than we had with our now 2 year old. From the very first appointment Deborah Blue, took her time to access my prenatal history, and wants for this pregnancy. Because I have a history preterm deliveries, meeting each midwife was important to ensure on the day of delivery I would be familiar with the on call midwife. Each midwife (Blue, Mary Lou, Mary, Yasmeen,Cind )were all exceptional!!! I greatly appreciate how they all communicated, staying aligned with how I wanted my final birthing experience to be handled. They all took the time to learn about my family, and how my career plays apart of my everyday life; initially I didn't understand their interest during my appointments but once my third trimester begun it all made sense as they helped me better prepare for delivery ensuring I was always mindful of the wellbeing of baby and I. Ironically Blue was the on call midwife, she was unbelievably supportive and calming for both my husband and I. My husband was flabbergasted at how this birthing experience was light year's ahead of the traditional hospital experience we had two years ago. ***This was my first time I carried to term, felt fully in charge of my delivery, naturally delivered a very healthy baby over 6lbs, and was discharged within 24 hrs of delivery (SUCCESSFULLY BLESSED!!)*** If you're expecting and seeking an alternative from the traditional OBGYN only care I highly recommend the UW Midwives NW. *Birthing Center* I would be remiss to not speak on my exceptional experience at the UW Birthing Center. The UW Northgate birthing center nurses, lactation coach, and lab staff were all extremely courteous and accommodating. I greatly appreciate the care rendered to my baby and I; priority care was felt verses being just another room to check. Kudos to the dietitian team with extremely inclusive menu options, my husband was very impressed by the availability and quality of the vegetarian boxes. Went through my whole pregnancy and labor with this team and I cannot recommend them enough! The office is tidy, the receptionist is very kind and was great about communicating last minute openings (I preferred morning appts that weren't always available). The nursing staff is wonderful and knowledgeable and every midwife was a pleasure to work with. They rotate 24 hour shifts at the hospital so you meet them all through your prenatal check ups and then depending on when you go into labor and how long it lasts you'll work with 2-3 of them for l&d then postpartum. I had Victoria for most my labor then Yasmeen for delivery. Both were incredible and calm. Answered any and all questions I had and didn't pressure or shame me for any of my choices but let me know what was medically best for my labor and delivery while ultimately leaving it up to me and my partner to decide (unless intervention was needed, which it wasn't.) I forget the name of the 3rd midwife who worked with us postpartum and through discharge but she was helpful as well. Cannot recommend this place enough. We had our baby in March 2018 and had a really great experience with the midwives clinic. They are thoughtful, available and caring. The front desk is also really great and so friendly. We made our appointments so we could see a different midwife. It was nice to get to know everyone since we wouldn't know who we would have when we went into labor. I was 3 weeks early and we had Mary Lou as our midwife. She was incredible! She was calm, empowering and respected the process. I also had an amazing nurse that made a huge difference. We ended up not having a doula and because Mary Lou was so amazing, I don't think we needed one. It was a pretty quick labor once we got the hospital and she walked us through the whole process. We had some issues with feeding after birth and all the midwives that saw us at the hospital were encouraging and helpful. We would for sure come back and I recommend this clinic to all my friends. I'm really glad I decided to go to the midwives! I received thorough care, more so than I normally get at regular doctor appointments. This was my first pregnancy and it's difficult being so open with your body and getting comfortable, however the midwives make you feel at ease. Meeting all of them prior to birth was really nice as well, usually each appointment I saw someone different. Cindy helped deliver my baby when it was her time to come. The whole medical team tried their best to make sure I could deliver regularly, which I really appreciate; it was only when the babies heart beat was becoming irregular the option of c-section was highly reccomended. But I never felt forced into a decision. Cindy was absolutely wonderful and supportive through the whole labor and helped me remain calm. Even after birth there is a lot of attention to how you are feeling emotionally. I even had my birth control inserted in their clinic. I transferred to the Midwives Clinic after 20 weeks, after being disappointed by the lack of personal care or substance in my prenatal visits with an OB. I knew that transferring to the Midwives meant I wouldn't know which midwife would be with me during childbirth, but after meeting all of them at my monthly checks, I discovered I didn't care. Benefits of seeing the certified nurse midwives at this clinic: 1. They generally opt out of looking "under the hood" and instead spend office time asking you about your pregnancy experience, birth plan, etc. 2. All of the midwives are highly experienced, and many teach midwifery students. 3. All of the midwives have warm, maternal personalities and are a pleasure to chat with. 4. The office staff remember you by your second visit, and take care of any disability/work issues you need sorted out extremely promptly. (Thanks Becki!) 5. They offer great referrals to whatever resources you need: doulas, lactation specialists, pediatricians, prenatal yogis, etc. Just ask. 6. We had such a fantastic experience with the Midwife clinic at the birth center at Northwest Hospital. The midwives facilitated the pre-birth, birth and post-birth experience that we intended-- respectful, quietly present, supportive, and un-invasive. For the pre-birth care, we loved all 5 of the midwives, which translated into us feeling comfortable with who ever we got for the birth. They each seemed genuinely caring, skilled and attentive. Through the labor - we were so impressed how after the standard blood draws and cervical checks were done- the lights dimmed, everyone left the room (except the midwife) and let my husband and I have the connected, powerful, quiet labor experience we were hoping for. Mary Lou (our midwife) was awesome- I loved her spirit, her suggestions were spot on, her humor was a delight. She even took out some aroma therapy for transition while I was in the tub. I was impressed. She facilitated my husband catching our daughter, they delayed cord clamping, left us alone for 2 hours after the birth, all vitals for baby were done on me, etc, etc. Not only that, but the nursing staff was great and you can sense that the presence of the midwives has had a really positive effect on the staff as a whole. I was beyond impressed with my experience with the entire staff at the midwives clinic. Even Katie at the front desk and Ashley the nurse were amazing and helpful! I felt like the most neurotic pregnant lady in the world with all of my concerns and questions and the midwives never brushed anything off. Both Deborah & Mary Lou helped me during a tough induction and labor and were both incredibly supportive and held my hand (both figuratively and literally) when my birth plan went awry. The midwives at NW are very supportive during prenatal care, talking to you about your pregnancy over physically checking you over (and under...and inside), letting you lead the way while still being hyper vigilant about routine screens and tests to ensure your baby is healthy. Just had my second babe also with the nw midwives group and loved the whole experience again just as much as my first. Two midwives left and there are now two new midwives with the group since I had my daughter. Debra, one of the new midwives, was the one who helped deliver my second. Being a minority, I have experienced a lot of prejudiced and unprofessional treatment from medical 'professionals.' I had thought that midwives would be empathic and reasonable, but I found that these women were some of the worst I've ever had to deal with. They accused me of being homeless. They had no reason to believe that I was. They accused me of being on drugs. They had no reason to think so; they claimed that it was because I didn't have previous OBGYN records to give them (I waited until the beginning of the second trimester to transfer from my primary care physician to a midwife). When I asked them standard questions about care, they acted like I was questioning their qualifications, and said that I was being rude. They seemed to be reluctant to examine me physically. Every time I had an appointment, I was treated poorly. However, I wanted a midwife who worked in a hospital that could provide nitrous to its patients. I was trying to avoid having an epidural, and I was willing to suffer some rudeness to do so. Mary Lou turned my baby when it was in the womb so that her arm was wrapped around her neck. I almost had to have a C-section because of that. Then, when it was time to push, Mary Lou misheard something that I said, accused me of swearing at her, would not listen when I told her differently, and left me on my own for an hour. Because of the stress of that, my labor stalled, and it was a long time after that that I actually gave birth. Mary Lou, in my opinion, is overly-emotional and unable to properly care for patients. These women ruined my birth experience, and what I have written here is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the unprofessional behavior I witnessed. I would recommend staying away for anything but the most basic of care. read more

Over the 9 months I had appts with each of them but Cindy stands out as being so caring and comforting and knowledgeable as well. I cannot speak highly enough of the NWH midwives. We had been under the care of a different midwife clinic in town and was planning an out of hospital birth - until 33 weeks when I developed high blood pressure and excess amniotic fluid so I had to transfer care to the midwives at NWH late in pregnancy. They took such good care of me and baby. I was just so impressed with how well they listened to me and respected my emotions surrounding our transfer, even though they knew I didn't want a hospital birth. My delivery was beautiful and they truly cared about my feelings as well as my safety. We had both Mary Lou and Deborah for our labor and they ROCKED. My new favorite people! These midwives didn't know me well but they jumped right in and made me feel so taken care of. We delivered our son last month with the Northwest Hospital Midwives. From start to finish we had an exceptional experience. Early in the pregnancy, when I had spotting, they made sure to fit me right in. Each appointment was on time and efficient and they made sure to take their time to answer all of my questions in a compassionate and knowledgeable way. The birth process was also fantastic. I felt listened to and all of the nurses were always there to help. We got the birth we wanted even though there was circumstances beyond our control. We feel extraordinarily lucky to live in this area and to have such good prenatal and birth options, but if we end up having a second child, I can't imagine going anywhere else. read more

I gave these ladies five stars as we would have our second child with them in a heartbeat. However, I don't have experience with other Midwives or OBs, so its hard for me to rate them relative to other places. First, excellent care up until labor. They are very relaxed and knowledgeable. I never felt that I needed an OB. We opted to have genetic screening with a cell free fetal DNA test and got the results back in 3 business days! Our LO was a week overdue and Deborah stripped my membranes so I could avoid being induced. It worked! 14 hours later I went into labor. Cindy was on call and was with us all of the time during the second stage (pushing). She was super helpful and supportive and also had the experience to make some important calls. I never doubted her leadership. Our nurse, Dawn, was absolutely outstanding. She was very personable and supportive. I ended up needing assistance through pushing as our LO's heart rate was dropping some with every push, and the OB on call, Dr. Lewis, was there immediately. She did an amazing job. Providing me options and preventing me from tearing. I decided to get an epidural at 8 cm because I had had a prolonged active labor and was exhausted. It too came immediately. Both the midwives and the nurse were encouraging me to persist without pain medication because that's what I wanted in my birth plan, but after telling my rock star husband my safe word, they got drugs to me asap and were fully supportive of my decision. I got to pull our baby out, my husband cut the cord, and we spent 3 hours with our LO before they took him off my chest to weigh him. Mary Lou checked our latch while breastfeeding in the hospital, and Michelle conducted our 6 week postpartum exam, giving me helpful tidbits of wisdom about getting my abs back together and pumping breast milk and postpartum sex. Michelle also inserted my IUD a week later and it went seamlessly (practically painlessly), which was a big difference from the practitioner who put an IUD in before I had had any children ( granted my cervix had changed, but sparing you the details, I can honestly say that Michelle really did a much better job, so kudos to her.) We loved Mary too, and would have been just as happy with her assisting us during labor, or any of them. They're all great! Becky the clinic nurse was wonderful too. Sadly, she's leaving before July, but I'm sure they'll get a great replacement. They are also one of the most on time physicians' offices we've ever received care from. It's weird to review something this important, but I'll just say that if I went on to have 10 babies, I'd have them all with these midwives. I always knew I wanted midwives, but my pregnancy care got off to a rocky start with a different birthing center. So I decided I wanted actual NURSE midwives, and that a hospital setting might be good too. I was 12 weeks along when I switched to these ladies at Northwest Hospital and I was absolutely delighted with my whole experience. I loved that they were low key (didn't suggest a lot of extra tests and checks unless they judged it necessary), and that they went with what I wanted with no judgment (I sampled literally all the pain meds they offered during labor). I ended up needing some slight medical intervention and they brought in an OB who was on call that night, and they all worked together flawlessly. My first time pregnancy and birth experience was wonderful and I fully recommend Northwest Midwives! read more

I don't have enough good things to say about the UW midwives. My wife and I are beyond grateful for the care we received in the transition to parenthood. We met all of the midwives during the months leading to delivery, so we felt like we would be well cared for no matter who was working when I went into labor. Each of them are incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate, and committed to listening and truly being present with their patients. As it turned out, Mary Lou and Deborah were with us. What a gift they both were. I had a tough and long labor that could have ended with some intervention. I was able to deliver without intervention thanks in no small part to each of them reminding me of my strength and supporting the work my wife and I were doing together. Truly a place where exceptional medical knowledge meets a profound respect for a woman's journey to birth. The care continued after birth too. At my 2 week post partum visit I am pretty sure Deborah missed her lunch as she took so much time to really listen to me and my concerns. They all celebrated our newest addition while surrounding us with support during the transition after birth. Not one negative thing to say- these women are authentic, smart, and dedicated. There's no other place I will ever go for my prenatal care. The care we received during pregnancy and our birth was top notch, not to mention personable, patient, vigilant, and kind. I developed preeclampsia in my 37th week so the midwives decided to induce. The induction process can take some time and isn't known to be as smooth as spontaneous labor, but the midwives supported me emotionally and physically through the whole process. The induction took a while but everyone was so patient, despite my climbing blood pressure. What could have been a scary situation or a birth resulting in an unnecessary c-section ended up being an incredibly safe, healthy, positive, and empowering experience. We also loved the birth center at Northwest Hospital and loved how smoothly the birth center staff worked with the midwives. read more

I sit here now with my healthy and gorgeous baby girl of five weeks old and tear up while reflecting about my experience with the Northwest Hospital midwives. Each and every visit was an extreme joy taken with absolute care. I felt listened to and seen at every visit by each one of them. Some even made our visits fun, exchanging laughs and great conversations! Rozlyn's birth came with 57 hours of odd happenings and it was my midwives who guided each challenging decision. I transferred here at 20 weeks from a free standing birth center and I couldn't be happier with my decision. First of all since this isn't something you decide on based solely on a Yelp review you should be aware that they do free meet and greet appointments. I rotated through seeing each of the different certified nurse midwives at each of my appointments and got along well with all of them. My appointments were always on time which was fantastic. Most of my appointments were quick as I had a generally uneventful pregnancy but whenever I had a giant list of questions they took the time to make sure I got all the answers I needed and to follow up when necessary. The best part was that when something unexpected came up, my son was breech, I did not have to think twice about where I would end up as they are affiliated with Northwest Hospital. One of the midwives happened to already be at the hospital when I went in for my c-section and since she was available she assisted for the surgery. A few of the other midwives stopped to check in on us as we were recovering. Best clinic and midwives!! With both my pregnancies I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum, my first pregnancy I went to a different doctor's office and received little to no help and I ended up losing 20 lbs and felt so depressed and alone during such a difficult time. But THIS pregnancy I decided to try NW Midwives, from my very first appointment everyone really stepped up to make sure I'm as comfortable and taken care of as possible. They set me up for bi-weekly IV Infusions so I never got as dehydrated and sick as last time. I had no idea how unhelpful my doctor was with my first pregnancy until NW Midwives took care of me this time. Any time I've ever called a midwife called me back in a very timely manner. They even set me up with appointments every other week to check in until the Hyperemesis got better and I started gaining weight again. One time I had pregnancy brain and showed up for an appointment an hour early and they saw me right then so I didn't have to wait. Another time I was running late and called and they asked me when I could get there, I told them, and they said that was fine to just come on in at that time. They are so accommodating, so informative, and such great listeners. I never feel rushed during my appointments, they always take so much time to explain things to me, let me feel heard, and make me feel really special and like they truly care for me. I one time spent an hour talking to the midwife Deborah about some very difficult topics and she was amazing, so patient and encouraging, she said all the right things. I love every single midwife there and I don't even have a preference to who delivers my baby because they're all so wonderful, even the front desk employees are outstanding! Raquel in the front called me after the office had technically closed to tell me the gender results of our genetic testing, saying they had just received them moments ago and she didn't want me to have to wait another day. I cannot say enough good things about this clinic, this has been such a great experience and I recommend them to every pregnant woman I know! read more

We had both our daughters with these midwives, and would recommend them strongly to anyone wanting a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to care. I am not exaggerating when I say that the care we received from the midwives clinic reshaped our expectations for what healthcare should be. They made sure we were well-informed throughout both pregnancies, gave us time to ask all of our questions at every appointment, and listened to every concern. During the births, every midwife we saw was supportive and encouraging, and I attribute the great birth experiences we had to their guidance. With my first daughter, I was in labor for 27 hours, and Cindy and Bonnie kept our spirits up and eased our anxiety while we waited for baby girl to arrive. Love love love them! After doing some research, I decided to choose Northwest Midwives for my 2nd pregnancy. I'm so happy I did. My first labor experience was very negative. I was seeing an obgyn who was not very natural birth friendly and so I knew that this time around I wanted a midwife. Each of the midwives, including the substitute Sally, is amazing! The way it works here is that whoever is on call the day you go into labor will deliver your baby. I liked each one of them so much that I didn't care who was going to be on call. They are all so nice and accepting of your plan. Not once did I feel uncomfortable about my wants. They also made me feel comfortable calling any time for any worries or questions I had. They deliver at Northwest Hospital which was a great experience. The nurses are great and the food is actually pretty good for hospital food. I ended up having Aditi Grandy for my delivery and she was incredible. She made me feel calm and as comfortable as possible. Granted there were 3 other people delivering they day so she was busy, but she still made sure to be there each time I needed her.
