We always enjoy shopping there and the customer service. Great option if you don't want to leave the island (we trek all the way from Longport!). You expect higher prices at the Shore, but Casel's takes it to the point of criminality. They used to give you more for that premium, but they got rid of the terrific bakery counter, they got rid of the sliced-to-order fish and deli. So what's left? A crowded store with a surly, unfriendly manager where everything is priced AT LEAST 50% to 100% higher (or more) than your regular supermarket. I gave it two stars (instead of one) because it is still the only place nearby where you can get some of that stuff, but $15/lb for cream cheese? $14/lb for olives? $8/lb for tomatoes? $55/lb for salmon? Apparently, the people who run Casel's are afraid of the truth. Because I wrote about their ridiculous prices and, poof! the review disappears. Back to prices.... Anything on the deli and dairy side of the store? Buyer beware! They sell Kozy Shack rice pudding for $3.09/lb. But if they make it themselves? $11.99/lb. I worked my way thru college working in supermarkets. From wagon boy, to deli server, to asst. manager. Yes store made (NOT "homemade") typically costs a bit more. Why? It's a cultural or psychological thing, I think because when you consider the fact that stores buy the raw materials by the truckload, it costs less to make than to buy. Just like for us people at home who pay retail for the fixings. Add a dash of labor, but then again, the commercial product includes labor too. But almost 4 times the price? I've never seen it anywhere else. The deli counter? In all my years in the stores, sliced turkey breast was the "queen" of the deli case, bringing in the highest price amongst high volume staple products. Of course some specialty items, especially if they are imported will cost more. Certainly it NEVER should cost less than the highly processed Hebrew National salami. But that's exactly the case in Casel's. $23.99/lb for HN salami ($1 more if you want it BBQ style) up,$2/lb from last year. All the turkey products - including the store made off the bone variety which is typically expensive - cost a few dollars less per lb. And here is the kicker....they sell the exact same product as a "stubbie" in their cold case - you just have to slice it for $12/lb or so. I asked the guy behind the counter why they have such a crazy price differential. He said "people pay"...... Let's be clear - we aren't talking about artisanal Italian imported or style salami. We are talking about what's identical to the wrapped in plastic and hung from the wall on j-hooks. Let that sink in. Almost $24/lb for highly processed salami. I've checked a random selection of supermarkets and haven't found that reversed situation in any. Lots of stuff in the deli counter are extremely high priced, especially the smoked fish. For example - kippered salmon salad? $30/lb and much of it is mayonnaise. Bottom line? Casel's is fine for a pinch, an emergency or just plain convenience. You will get quality products there for sure. But you will pay dearly for it. read more

The cashier was extremely rude. I didn't hear her ask for my Casel's card, and when she told me the total I realized that I didn't get my discount. I have given them thousands of dollars of business over 35 years time and the other day I spent money buying their wonderful chicken salad and it was bad. I called and told them and I brought it back next day the sale had ended so they gave me the money I paid and told me oh well I can't get the new stuff at that price. I grew up in Atlantic City and Casel's was a regular visit. My father loved the wine-cheese spread and I liked their rice pudding. Yesterday, I returned there for the first time in many years. Needed to pick up some salads. Went to the packaged deli section and found three types of slaw. They had one thing in common. They were all priced at $8.99/lb! How in the world do they get away with this absurdity? Apparently, they have a mostly blind clientele that are unable to read the price stickers. If not, their customers all flunked basic math because they are willing to pay more than DOUBLE and in some cases TRIPLE the market price for this item. Just for shitz and giggles, I reached for the "Casel's original rice pudding". That was $9.99/lb. Maybe I slipped through a time portal at Casel's because these must be the prices 75 years from now. read more

Good things come in small packages and Casel's is the epitome of this old adage. Their deli section, bakery and meat department alone are worth the trip. Here's what's not worth the trip. I like markets with big, long aisles and for good reason. Grunting out a hot, steamy growler at the halfway point in a long aisle gives you time to bolt for the other end when another shopper enters from the opposite end. Not quite as effective as the elevator exit fart, but pretty close. Do this with your wife when she's at the midway point in the aisle, and time it right so another shopper is close by right after the assault and you've got a real fun time. But noooo. Not at Casel's. There's no running from your gastric masterpiece in their short as shit aisles. I tried. Halfway into a short aisle and totally busted by another shopper who sneakily sauntered up on me from where I thought was the safe end of the aisle. Anyway, not much fun to be had here if you're gonna crop dust, but they do have an awesome bakery, deli and meat dept. Their ready to eat deli delights are pretty awesome too. If you do get busted, there's an awesome high-end liquor store across the street. Bail and go shopping for booze as your wife does her thing. Casel's. A strong recommend. read more

It's convenient. That's it. Overpriced. Unfriendly. Cashiers dismissive. Zero customer service. Go to Acme or ShopRite for a better customer experience, price and selection. Example: I've shopped there out of necessity for a decade. So they have a drawing (allegedly) for some free thing or discount if you drop a small dupe of your receipt in a a plastic box at the exit. The funny thing is, I had seen that box at the exit for years but didn't know what it was so I asked someone. They told me. Here's the point: in the hundreds of times I had been at Casel's NOT ONCE has any cashier ever told me to drop the receipt in the box for a free drawing. It must be an inside joke. This will definitely be my last visit. Ordered dinner for the holiday...not too hard to prepare, but thought better of it since we are only 2 people this year. Ordered brisket(way too fatty), matzoh ball soup( just vile, grainy matzoh balls), gefilte fish( wished it had been from a jar). The accompanying vegetables-spinach(very bad) and fresh steamed vegetables(no taste whatsoever)would have been better left out.. the only eatable item was the noodle kugal. Very sad state of affairs. And, the final indignity...pumpkin pie...who serves pumpkin pie for the end of a Rosh Hashanah dinner???. I'm torn on how to rate the place. I've been coming to Casel's for the better part of 30 years now and have always thought the prices are astronomical. But I have yet to find things that year after year after year when I come down for a visit make feel as comfortable as the first time I've walked through the door. I am a shoobie at heart and really rely on the prepared foods here. I don't think I've ever touched the unprepared foods. But the quality does speak for itself. I can't deny the best turkey breast I've ever had from a deli and consistently has tasted the same year after year resides right there in the deli case. The shrimp salad and cole slaw are also some of my favorite items. The cheese danish are also pretty awesome. The bread...rye bread and hoagie rolls always fresh and the wall of rolls, specifically the onion rolls and egg twists rolls are off the charts and I always wind up taking home an extra half dozen. The Hawaiian corned beef and bbq salami and cooper's sharp American cheese are also some of my go to items from the deli counter. If you want a sandwich, they are extremely generous in the portions too. Thankfully this place is here for when I come visit the shore. I just know my wallet is gonna moan and groan, but my tummy smiles, literally smiles. read more

Eventually I moved to California in the 70's and decided to visit Atlantic City to see where I grew up. Buddy Casel and family lived down the street from us. This grocery store is located in a beach town which is very busy in the summer. Surprise? You would think so based on the amount of stock this place keeps on their shelves. It is impossible to rely on Casel's to get the things I need in order to take care of my family. Everything is severely overpriced and fresh produce is clearly on first come first served basis. With a summer house in the area, I've been going to Casel's for more than 30 years. Yes, its prepared foods are expensive but realize that these are aimed at weekenders who don't want to bother cooking, prefer grab-and-go and are willing to pay premium for the convenience. The prepared foods - particularly the refrigerated wall filled with plastic containers - are delicious, offer great variety, fresh and stress-free. The potato salad with egg is a local classic as is the chopped liver and Margate slaw. Equally terrific are the baked goods. Casel's might have the best bagels in America (I stock up on the sesame ones as often as possible) and it carries AC's famous Formica Bakery rolls (what's probably housing your favorite local hoagies). And ask any local: Casel's cinnamon buns - what tourists might call sticky buns - are outstanding. These come in a six-pack with nuts or without nuts plus they sell mini-versions. Dangerously bite-sized. Cinnamon buns sell out fast, so come early. Baked goods are priced no higher than supermarket chains. If you're looking for a full-size supermarket (Casel's is quite small) with more mainstream merchandise and more competitive pricing, there's a Pathmark about 2-3 miles away in the Wellington Avenue shopping center in Ventnor Heights. If you're looking for high-quality food and some great specialties, hit Casel's. Worth the trip. read more
