This was a truly a trip back in time when I walked in. It is a narrow space with a 1930's authentic art deco construct. The booths are semi-circular and stair cased so to give everyone a sightline to the bar. One expects the walls to move and the Desi Arnez orchestra to start playing Babalu. The place is kinda weird. I had a brandy old-fashioned which was 4.50 (seems reasonable but I'm from a bigger city). It had a good amount of brandy. The bartender was not friendly at all and didn't say a single word to us except for the drink price. The service was fine. The menu had an entire page of White Russian-type drinks which I had a sip of. If you like White Russians then this might be your place. They don't service Miller or Budweiser products and are proud of it. The place is a weird twist between a 1950's bar and a hipster kinda spot. The booths are cool and are good for a date night. I probably wouldn't go back but it was an experience. read more

I'm pulling for the new owners. The old Casino was truly a one of a kind. The interior is nearly original art-deco and sort of has a run-down Cotton Club ambience to it. The old owner used to carry one of every beer he could get in the La Crosse market. There were enough to make the beer list a three ring binder. He then offered the ability to pay a couple bucks and pull a tab from a fishbowl. Each tab had the name of a beer on it so you could end up with anything from a Miller Lite to a $20 German beer. Anyway, the past is the past. I stopped in once since it reopened. The beer selection obviously wasn't the same but it wasn't bad, lots of good microbrews, etc. There was a larger crowd but it was still quiet enough to not have to elbow to the bar for a drink like at many of the other downtown bars. read more

When visiting my hometown of La Crosse last fall and seeing that the Casino had closed, I was struck with a certain sense of loss that I never figured I would be capable of feeling for a dirty, smoky dive bar. Maybe it's because they had one of the two best beer selections in La Crosse. Maybe it's because it has survived so long amid a flurry of establishments aimed at a college age crowd. With it's smoke stained ceilings and old style ripped leather booths, "ambiance" (or lack thereof) was really what this watering hole had going for it. That being said, I guess the real reason I'm sad that it's gone is because it was the only bar in La Crosse where I could walk in and feel like I've just stepped into the past. I've been here many times, but after this last weekend it seems the place has started to go downhill. There's a couple of new bartenders that don't seem to know what they're doing. It's a bit off putting when you're standing at the bar for 10 minutes waiting for a drink, while the bartender noticeably sees you and continues to eat her food behind the bar. read more

Unfortunately 9 of us were excited to come to this bar and as we ordered drinks and then went to the jukebox. We put $10 in and played some old time country music. The female bartender skipped our first song, then our second song and then the third song. Asked for our money back and she refused. I understand not everyone likes all kinds of music but if there is a rule in the bar maybe they could have removed all of the music that was unwanted. She continued to refuse to refund our money with a nasty smirk on her face. Finally she had a sense of humanity and refunded the $10 and put a note on the jukebox that country music was not allowed. How sad that this cute little bar is so close minded. read more

I tried to take a trip down nostalgia lane by pulling my boyfriend into the open door of the Casino bar in La Crosse and was blown over by the heavy odor of mold and stale air as we entered. Instead of leaving (as was his instinct) I decided it was worth trying to hang out and see if the puny window air conditioner would turn over the air enough so we could enjoy a real martini. Was mistaken on both counts. Air never got better and, in fact, my boyfriend said the mold smell was worse in the men's restroom and the olives used in our Hendricks gin martini tasted old, tough and not at all as an enhancement to the drink. My boyfriend didn't even eat his olives after chewing on the first one. My hope is that the owners take this comment for the need to improve their place by doing a good professional cleaning of the walls, ceiling, fixtures and upholstery as well as get a new window air conditioner with more power and less spewing out of mold spores! Maybe then, I will be willing to visit and spend my money there. Until then, I am going to make sure my martini drinking friends will be told of the unfavorable air and martini at this establishment. read more

Casino Bar is the best place to go in La Crosse if you like drinking Russians. They have so many varieties. They also have a great beer and mixed drink selection and the prices are all equal to or lower than the other bars my friends and I frequent. There's an ATM but they take credit cards as well. The ambiance is pretty unique and the bartenders are always really friendly. They even have a vending machine that you can buy beer from! I've never seen one of those anywhere else. read more
