Earl's is a great new addition to downtown La Crosse and has fun staff. It's a bit off the beaten path but a great alternative to the college crowd. Easy street parking across 3rd Street. Excellent tap beer selection--including two Capitol and two New Glarus beers, currently. We sat in the back room and played darts with friends--very relaxed atmosphere. (Caution: Dart flight path crosses directly in front of women's restroom). Hope they add "grocery" service soon! read more

Earl's is not a typical downtown La Crosse bar, you won't find college-aged kids looking for drink specials or local power-drinkers. Earl's caters to a professional crowd earlier in the evenings and late-night can bring in a fun, eclectic group of folks. The bar is clean and the owners have done a wonderful job restoring the building. The exposed brick walls, original hardwood floors and updated lighting make for incomparable ambience. Also, note that Earl's serves homemade pizza--it's delicious. You can also get a scoop of shelled peanuts (served in an aluminum trash can lid--great idea!) Earl's is ok. They did a good job of constructing the rectangular/oval bar, and I like all the windows facing the street. It's a little bit sterile and lacking in decorations, as if management hasn't quite decided whether to really make a go of this business. The large old-timey photos of La Crosse are interesting, but perhaps too imposing. If you've taken a vow of chastity and are looking for a La Crosse bar where you won't be tempted by the sight of any sexy young people, Earl's is your best bet: Earl's seems to be a hangout for chubby middle-aged men. Business would probably double if they hired some beautiful college girls to tend bar. read more

Expression and consumption mingle in a menagerie of tastes and styles that harken back to simpler times and friends long forgotten. Upon entering Earl's you are enveloped by a the warmth of the ambiance like a mother embracing a shivering child. A saloon? Is "Nessun Dorma" merely a song? Is "L'Estaque" merely a painting? No, but the owners should not be faulted for their attempts to define Earl's in such a way. The race of man is doomed to be limited by it's own devices and these limitations are no more apparent than when we try to label a place such as Earl's. "Bar", "pub", "tavern"... these descriptors are fine for lesser establishments that shill their fermented drinks and deep-fried concoctions with the same care of a farmer filling a trough. Your preconceived notions have no place at Earl's. Like the inhabitants of Plato's cave who lived their entire lives staring only at the shadows on the wall, those that have not experienced Earl's have yet to know what it truly means to be alive. read more

This place has so much potential, however the night my wife and I went in it was very disappointing. There were 4-5 others at the bar and the bartender. Two TVs on with the volume turned up on family feud. The interior looks really nice and the large front windows are inviting. The large black in white photos hanging from the ceiling provide a great background for an awesome bar. I asked the bartender if she had a cocktail list, she looked at me like I was out of my mind. She said no, but that she can make a drink. To her credit she was polite, and made a nice looking drink with a good pour. The soda (vodka and soda with twist of lemon) was really flat. I had a draft that was good and cold. It's clear that this is a beer bar, and that's OK, but the place is screaming for 3-5 simple signature cocktails. With a cool name "Earl's Grocery and Saloon" and great interior, it should have some go to cocktails. The other thing that turned me off was the vibe, it was just sort of dull. No music, but "Family Feud" blaring on the TV and the 4 or 5 locals talking amongst themselves and the bartender. If I was from out of town and walked into this place, I'd not feel welcomed. We left after my beer; my wife gave me her drink to finish and because the soda was so flat I didn't even want it. I really wanted to like this place because every time I drove by it just looked like a cool place. It did not meet my expectations. We left, walked down the street to the new bar (no name as of 11/17/2016; contest to name the bar is going on) formerly known as "Happenings", and that place was fun, clean, and active. The funny thing is that there were no more people in that bat, but it just had a better vibe. read more
