Didn't hear anything for the rest of the day. A couple days later, same result, "oh I'm sorry, we'll get on it soon". At that point, I just decided to get a different referral and get my work done somewhere else. This was about a month or two ago, to this day I have not heard back from them.

I needed a periodontal evaluation after my primary dentist recommended that I see a specialist. I…read morefirst visited one periodontist referred by my dentist and received a treatment plan and cost estimate. Because the procedure was expensive and not covered by my dental insurance, I decided to do more research and get additional opinions. I found Dr. Andrew Lum online, and was impressed by his credentials and very friendly office assistant, so I scheduled a visit in mid July 2026. Dr. Lum performed a periodontal evaluation and gave me a treatment plan that included two osseous surgery procedures. His diagnosis and recommended treatment were consistent with the other periodontists I visited, which gave me confidence that the treatment recommendation was reasonable. The main difference was cost. Among the three periodontists I consulted, Dr Lum office's quote was the most reasonable, is consistent with the bay area average cost for this particular treatment. I asked whether there was any flexibility in pricing, and the office did offer a discount, that help me a lot more. Overall, I appreciated Dr. Lum evaluation and explanation. My lesson from this experience is that patients should consider getting more than one opinion and comparing costs, especially for procedures that are not covered by insurance. Each evaluation cost about $150-$195, but I think it was worth it. Dr Lum has performed many surgery procedure like the one I needed. In addition, his office assistant is extremely helpful, timely, and respectful. I am looking forward to have Dr Lum to do the treatment for me. I will update the experience after the surgery.

After the procedure I complained about the sensation from the newly filled tooth. Second time: for teeth's cleaning and Dr. Lansangan tried to figure out why I still felt sensitive about the tooth. She was confident that there was nothing wrong about the newly filled tooth, she suggested my sensitivity was from other teeth nearby. So she did two more teeth filling procedure for me, even though I did not feel any discomfort or sensation from the two teeth. Afterwards I still felt sensitive from the same location of the first filled tooth. I went to different dentist office for secondary opinion. The dentist from this office identified the sensitive spot from the first filled tooth. He said the filling procedure done previously did not cover the sensitive area fully, he suggested to redo the filling procedure. I called Highland dental about the secondary opinion from other dentist. The assistant from desk lady said you should report to us instead of going to different dentist. I responded, I did report to Dr. Lansangan, but she was not able to identify and resolve the problem. Then the assistant agreed to make an appointment with me with no additional charges. Third time: this time the dentist was Dr. Tran. He was not friendly, even a little angry, apparently because I went to different dentist office for consultation. He reluctantly admitted the problem, but eventually he agreed that the filling material from the first filled tooth was falling out, he redid the filling procedure. They are care about their own reputation more than care about their patients. On the other hand they are not very skilled dentist.

Anyway, I'm no longer a dental hygienist (switched career), but I come here for my dental needs and have since referred my whole family and friends here as much as I can. I've had sensitivity a lower left molar because it was hurting when I bit down for a good week, but Dr. Chen did her checks and told me it was fine and that the sensitivity would go away. Had it been another dentist, I'm sure I would have gotten a filling or a crown because that tooth is all cracked with the front of it chipped off from my grinding. It's been a few years now, that lower left molar is doing just fine! Oh, another instance, my mom was going to a low income clinic in San Leandro and the dentist wanted to either pull out the tooth (which the insurance would cover) or put a crown on it (which we would pay $2K). All I did was ask to see the xray of that tooth and the dentist (who also teaches at UCSF) freaked out and angrily told us to leave. Like I was calling out his bluff or something. He already pulled out my mom's molar the year before that, so we're thinking that he did that because my mom's insurance would only cover extractions and the tooth was probably fine. Anyway, after being turned away all of a sudden, we went straight to Dr. Chen for a second opinion and found that tooth to be perfectly fine. It turned out that it was a tooth in front of that supposedly problem molar (that the other dentist wanted to extract) that was causing pain and simply had a small cavity. Dr. Chen filled it, we paid the out of pocket fee and my mom kept her molar for chewing!
