This rating is specifically regarding Dr. Kathryn Christensen. I took my sweet cat to The Cat Doctor some years go for her regular care, and I was generally happy with the visits and procedures. Unfortunately my cat got cancer and it eventually came time to put her to sleep. Dr. Christiansen came to my house to perform the procedure. She had me hold my cat for her, which was fine, but she couldn't find a vein. Little did I know that her plan B was to stab my cat with the needle directly into her heart, which is what she did! My cat was biting my fingers as hard as she could - it was HORRIBLE and TRAUMATIC for me and my sweet kitty. It was so bad. I've since learned that the technique she used for euthanizing my cat was intra-cardiac euthanasia. It is widely thought of as painful and barbaric. My sweet cat suffered greatly in her last moments and so did I. I have never forgotten that horrible ending - my cat deserved so much better, a goodbye filled with peace and love, not horror. I don't know if Dr. Christiansen practices any more, but if she does, please consider seeing someone else. read more

Looking back on my experience, I feel like I was taken advantage of as a first time cat owner. When you adopt from the Humane Society, they give you a list of vets where your first visit is free. I've adopted from them before so I know that it is true on their end. Cat Care Clinic on the other hand, made sure that didn't happen. This place was closest to my house so I decided to go. The woman who set up my appointment told me if I want them to test my cat's stool, bring a sample in. I wasn't told that they'd be charging me for that until the day I walked in. Anyway, I had appointment with Dr Dolores Shine things were going smoothly. When I adopted my cat, I was told she had no health issues so the check up was going as expected. She performed the physical exam and i'm thinking the appointment is coming to an end. She tells me that she's just going to swab my cats ears to "make sure everything's normal." I didn't question anything cuz I figured that was part of the routine exam. I remember her asking if my cat had been shaking her head or scratching her ears at all and I told her no. She then proceeds to pull UNSTERALIZED swabs out of her pocket that weren't wrapped in any type of plastic and she swabs my cats ears and quickly leaves without saying anything. She then comes back and says my cat has ear mites which is apparently common in cats who come from shelters but that she needs medication. I wasn't familiar with that and was more concerned about my cat so I didn't question her. I was given two different medications, and was told that they were sample medications. She never mentioned a follow up appointment or after care to make sure that the ear mites were gone or anything about paying. But I headed out, saying goodbye to the woman at the front desk (thinking I was good to go) and she stops me to tell me that I have to pay $60 for the medication and for the ear swabs. I was thoroughly confused because the doctor never asked me if I wanted this done to begin with and she never mentioned that i'd have to pay. I don't know if she looked under a microscope or ran a test she just did it and left the room as quickly as she came back in. Seems they have a habit of not mentioning the cost of services until after they either trick you or just force the service upon you. Oh and coincidentally, right after I leave my appointment, my cat is all of a sudden shaking her head like crazy and scratching her ears. AND one of the medications I was given, said "for otic use in dogs only" on the side of the box and their prescription label just so happened to be covering that part. By far the shadiest vet experience I've ever had and I've been a dog owner for 10+ years. read more

COMPLETE HORROR STORY!! Cat Doctor severly burned and permanently scarred our poor kitten Martha during a routine spay then lied to me about what happened. I dropped her off in the morning for the routine procedure and got a call at work around noon that the procedure went well but that she suffered a "slight pressure wound" on her neck from the anesthetic trachea tube and that it looked worse than it was. But when I picked her up later it was clearly a 3rd degree burn and looked like someone put a butane lighter to her neck. When I called BS on the "pressure wound" story thats when they told me what actually happened. They said her body temp dropped dangerously low during the procedure and that they needed to employ an emergency heating pad and bring her body temp back up. The heating element they used, they told me, was a pad they threw in the microwave and then put directly on my unconscious kitten and scalded her (another larger deep tissue burn developed and scabbed over on her shoulder in the next couple days). To make matters worse, the incision looked infected and the stitches began to open within a day. We reluctantly took her back into the clinic so they could open her back up, clean out the wound, and sew her back up. As I was on my way to pick her up after work, I got a call saying that she ripped all her stitches out after the second procedure and had to be put under anesthesia for a 3rd time to replace the sutures (they told me it was perfectly safe to put a 4 month old kitten under 3 times in two days). When I arrived at the clinic it was closing time and Dr Christianson recommended keeping her at the clinic overnight, though unsupervised, even though she just ripped out her stitches after the second procedure earlier that afternoon. She then offered to take her Martha home with her to keep an eye on her... No thank you, I can do that myself. After trying to blame the energetic nature of Martha's breed for what happened (she is a Sphynx), I finally got a (somewhat reluctant in my opinion) apology. Full disclosure, we received a full refund for the initial spay, and all follow up procedures. Martha seems to have recovered with the exception of her rather large and noticable scars on her beautiful tortoise markings. Also, we have brought our other sphynx here for years without incident (though only for checkups and shots and never had an operation here, she was spayed at Thiensville Small Animal Hospital). While the initial drop in body temperature and the subsequent burns from the heating element may have been in part due to her lack of hair, the only reason we took her here, despite the higher prices, was because it is a fancy 3rd Ward specialty vet that specializes in cats only. We thought the extra cost would be worth it because they would have more familiarity with exotic breeds such as Sphynxes (sphynx kittens are not easy to come by and are expensive, we wanted the best care). We were wrong. Also, besides the burning and lying about how that happened, the incision was still botched. I asked them how this could have happened at the CAT Doctor, and did not really get an answer other than it was an unfortunate coincidence. From my perspective, I could only call it incompetence. So be warned and educate yourself to what you are paying for. In our case, we though we were paying for an expertise and specialized care for specific breeds of cats, but that is not what we got. read more

I had a Black Cat named Pharoah. He was very I'll. The Vet did not handle him well. He whimpered in pain while she handled the neck fur (as his mother would) behind his head. We decided to euthanize him. That was over ten Years ago. Dr. Christiansen was not kind. I would never take any of my animals to The Animal Doctor again. I found The Cat Doctor by desperate accident. I was able to get my Himalayan in within the hour. I walked into a space that Could have been a coffee shop or children's library; so peaceful with a bright sunny view. There was NO odor permeating the rooms. The staff were friendly, caring and professional. When we went to the room it too was clean and without odor. I met the Vet and prior to the Tests, my baby liked her. She was very gentle and really calm and concerned. She was a Pro without ego and a big heart!! I have never been to a place that cared so much, strictly for felines. It is meticulous, has a great atmosphere, calming to my baby and doesn't price gouge!!! I am feeling a Blessing for Real!!! I have found a New Doctor for my Furbaby!!! This place is located in the 3rd Ward, difficult to find parking during mid afternoon but it's worth any driving or waiting you may do! I've taken my 12 year old cat here three times. One for an initial checkup, one for a dental surgery, and one for vaccines/a general follow up. I love all the staff, they're super nice and helpful especially with finding an appointment time that works for me. The two vets I've seen are nice and professional. One of the downsides of this place are the prices. They don't accept payment plans, and with my cat's procedure costing over $600 this was hard to pay immediately. They offered me CareCredit, but I work in a debt collections firm and I know how predatory CareCredit is. The interest rates are ridiculous. I found this inappropriate to be offering to an 18 year old, but I guess they wanted me to understand all my options! The care is very thorough, which puts me at ease as my cat ages. We have been taking our cats to the Cat Doctor for about 13 years, and Dr Christiansen is great with my cats. The office has treated all of my cats with respect and all the care they have received has been top notch. I love that they only see cats, so then a stressful trip to the vet is not made more stressful due to other kinds of animals in the waiting room. They also offer house calls, which was great with my cats who were afraid of everything! When we recently had to make the difficult decision to put one of our cats down, Dr Christiansen and her staff were so kind and understanding and treated our baby and us with care and respect. I made an appointment 2 weeks in advance for my cat who has a respiratory infection, paid their $82 deposit. Had a missed call the day before my appt. I'm a nurse in an ICU and could not answer my phone- then received a text message same day before to confirm my appt. and I reply "Y" and the response is "Thank you for confirming. We look forward to seeing you soon." Show up the next morning and nobody is there. Paid for parking. Office is closed. No note on the door. Called multiple times and left messages- nothing on their phone answering service says anything suggesting they would be closed so then I go to their website to see if I can find an email to email someone and there's a message saying "our office will be closed on August 23rd."- the day of my appt. I think to myself- okay so maybe something serious happened to their doctor or someone and they had to close shop for an emergency. That's fine. They could've at least let me know- why did I get a confirmation text if they were going to be closed?! Also- a NOTE on the DOOR would have been appropriate. So I tell myself I'll just call tomorrow and ask for a refund of my deposit and go somewhere else because I don't think they handled this appropriately. So I call and the receptionist ensues an ARGUMENT with me saying "we tried to call you and your voicemail box was FULL!!! We also sent you a text!! OUR DOCTOR HAS COVID!!!" She's yelling and talking over me- when all I did was calmly ask for my deposit back and that I was going somewhere else. That's all. Didn't tell them they had TERRIBLE customer service- and she tries to tell me that the manager will have to approve this refund because they tried to get in touch with me. I said "No ma'am- I received a CONFIRMATION text and showed up there and wasted my time on my day off. We have NOTHING to discuss! Send me my $82 back and that is that!" I heard someone else in the background who I'm assuming was the manager and she finally agreed after talking to me like I'm a damn child- cutting me off and yelling "EXCUSE ME!! EXCUSE ME!!" No ma'am. They did refund me. What they SHOULD HAVE done is APOLOGIZE, say OF COURSE we will send you your deposit back, our doctor was sick and we had to close the office we are sorry for this inconvenience and inconsistent communication on our part- or maybe even offered a free treatment of some sort so that they could keep my business. Had that happened- I would've obliged. That's called CUSTOMER SERVICE MY DEAR. Apparently that doesn't exist anywhere anymore and the receptionist's behavior and the unprofessional way of how they handled closing their office down tells me ALL I NEED TO KNOW of how they would've cared for my cat. I have a new 1-year old kitty that I wanted to bring in for a checkup. Also she's got the sniffles and she's been sneezing, so I was concerned and wanted to bring her in right away. The woman who answered the phone gave a sigh that I'm all too familiar with-when I get a call that I don't want to answer. She exhaled as she answered the phone with her scripted greeting. It was the sound of someone who hates answering phones. I knew immediately that I might not have a good experience. And I could hear in her voice that she did not want to be bothered. I want someone sincere. And when she said the earliest she could get me in was the 27th, and I asked if there a possibility I could get in sooner, she then recommended other vets in the area-instead of checking to see if there was a possibility, or putting me on hold to perhaps 'ask'. Precisely what everybody looks for in a vet. The staff was so warm and caring. Dr. Christensen herself is not only amazingly dedicated and knowledgeable, she made us feel like she truly cares for our pets as we do. Two key points: Dr. Christensen took extra time to speak at great length with us about an issue our other cat is having at home (ie, not part of the services we paid for!) She suggested helpful solutions that had little to do with buying anything from the store. Additionally, we saw on our receipt that they comped us $1.50 for parking without even saying anything! I took my kitty there for the first time today, and she received good and thorough care. Vet visits make her nervous and a bit cranky, but at least I was definitely happy with the experience. (She hissed and all, but that's because she's not used to seeing other cats!) Since we moved to the area a few months ago, I decided to bring her in to The Cat Doctor for her wellness exam and vaccinations now that she was due for a rabies shot. Given that she is almost 14, l agreed to some lab work to check if other issues may be lurking. I thought it all was going to be somewhat expensive, but the total was actually a bit under what I had budgeted. Considering the wellness exam includes nail trimming, I think it is all reasonably priced. They have a designated spot for "drop off" but no parking area. They told me they do reimburse you for the meter if you park nearby. (I did not use that option but it's good to know.) Also, they often have a couple of cats up for adoption and the ones I saw today were beautiful and friendly. Some other services such as boarding are offered at this location. read more

I'm sorry to learn about some of the negative experiences that some of the other reviewers have had. For my part, my experience with Dr. Christianson and her staff has been exceptional. The services have ranged from annual checkups, vaccinations and testing to help with problems specific to my cat; one of my older cats eventually died from kidney disease, and again the care was excellent - and the staff and doctor were kind compassionate. My 2 closest friends have also taken their cats there for years and feel the same. Also, I learned about The Cat Doctor through word of mouth, so that says a lot. My ONLY bad experience was with one doctor who was abrupt and rude. I later found out that we saw her on her last day of work; apparently she had been let go because of this kind of behavior. I'm wondering if some of the experiences others received was by this veterinarian - or other staff who Dr. Christianson also terminated for similar reasons. Two important points I want to end with: 1. Her prices have always been reasonable & lower than other vets I've had. 2. She makes HOUSE CALLS! My sweet Annie hasn't had to be 'boxed up' and carted off to the clinic for YEARS because Dr. Christianson and one of her staff come to our home for visits, and for only $30 extra. read more

Horrible, horrible experience!! A particular person from the staff was so rude and uncompassionate with me that I cannot return here. I am a very frustrated cat owner. My cat has kept me up every single night for almost a year with his howling. The last vet wasn't helping and didn't seem to know what to do. So, a friend told me about this place. And I thought, since my last vet didn't seem to know much about cats, this place being specific to only cats MUST be the solution!! One problem here is that you can't take what you're told as solid truth. One blood test turns in to many more blood tests. Even though I had blood tests at the other vet, I need to do more. And when those are done, there's another "kind" or "more detailed" version of another blood test... as the $$$$$ rack up. Also I was told to keep him on meds for 7-10 days. 10 days later I called and was told it needs to be 30 days before I can expect any results. WTH?? There's more: pricing seemed to change from it'll cost about $50 to getting to the register and being $75 for a single type of blood test. The doctor did knock it back down after I said something about it. The high prices and constant blood test make it difficult to continue to do the right thing for my animal. None of the proposed solutions by the Dr. worked to stop the howling. I still get woken up every night/morning at 3am, 4am 5am 6am. I don't think anyone is really understanding how horrible it is to live this way day after day. I am frustrated and called to ask about next steps after getting thyroid meds as a result of yet another blood test. Which may or may NOT correct the reason I came here: stop the howling!!! It wasn't the doctor who I spoke to, it was someone else - I think her name was Jen. She basically told me that I am killing my cat if I don't bring him in for more blood tests to see how the thyroid medication has effected thyroid blood count. The he will die slowly of starvation. Even though he's been howling for a year. He isn't starving. This was not compassionate and very accusatory to tell me this -- suggesting that I am killing my cat never needed to be said. Very offensive and unprofessional. This person then suggested that they will not fill my prescription if I don't bring him in again. Is this not the doctor's choice? So -- make the cat sicker? That's the answer? I told this girl that I did not like how this conversation was going and that I wanted to end it. "Jen" proceeded to tell me that she was going to tell the Doctor how rude I was to her on the phone. I was flabbergasted that this girl had the audacity to claim that I was the rude one. Ok, little girl -- go and tell on me. Any real professional doctor, would have followed up with their customer to ask what happened and be ready to apologize about the call. This doctor did not. I have NEVER in my life had any place of business speak and act this way They are getting me back now by not filling the prescription. Who is "killing" him now? HORRIFIC. read more

This is gonna hurt. Don't tell anyone about this. I have a reputation to maintain! A few years back my longtime, very trustworthy vet closed her practice. My biggest regret is not asking for a referral for another veterinarian, because it took me 3 tries with 3 different offices before I was satisfied with the way my cat was treated. I have a giant wuss of a siamese cat and he is terrified at the sight of his cat carrier. I really hate to stress him out, so I was ecstatic when I learned that the Cat Doctor makes house calls. Me? I go to the doctor on 12th and Kilbourn. Little dude gets his examinations on the coffee table. Same as it ever was. I've been taking my cat to The Cat Doctor since moving to Milwaukee in 2011. Dr. Christian has always been thoughtful and considerate. Im not the type of parent to bring my cats in for any reason other than massive blood loss or obvious illness. About a year ago my cat turned 21 and started getting confused and peeing outside the litter box. The Cat Doctor was more than helpful. They ran some tests, gave me some pills and an explained what I should expect over the next few months. Last month I had to have Ana (my 21 year old cat) put to sleep. Dr. Christian made a house call and did the service in my living room. She was beyond comforting. I've the past three weeks I have received a card from them, and notice from two different charities that a donation was made my The Cat Doctor in Ana's name. The thoughtfulness of this vet is beyond anything I have ever experienced in my two decades of being a cat companion. I will forget be grateful to them for it all. read more

Once again, the team at The Cat Doctor not only took care of our 13yr old kitty, Dory, but kept us updated on her health while we were away for 2 weeks. It's never easy to board your kitty, especially when you know she doesn't feel good and has the 'sniffles' . I never took my cat to this vet, but I did call to set up an appointment since they seemed to specialize in cats. When I called to set up the appointment, the woman was friendly but very pushy about running all kinds of tests...it was overwhelming! I thought it was a bit much considering I had never even brought my new kitten to this clinic. I feel like this clinic is more concerned with padding their pockets, than caring for our cats. I made the mistake of sending my boyfriend to the vet with our cat while I was at work, and he -- out of worry for our cat -- said yes to an X-ray that I might not have gone ahead with. Basically I paid $300 to find out my cat was fine. Oh well. They didn't get pushy about shots or anything though, which was nice. Everyone there was friendly and it sounds like routine examinations are resonably priced. Parking wasn't a big deal because they have a "loading zone" that you are allowed to park in. I find myself visiting The Cat Doctor often. However, I rarely go inside. For the most part I window shop. The Cat Doctor is located on Water St. In the Historic Third Ward. About a block total from where I work. When I need to think things through on a busy day, more often than not I head in its direction. It's amazing what a quick cat fix will do to set things right and get the wheels churning in the right direction again. Definitely one of the most expensive vet visits on record for my kitty, but in this case I got what I paid for. The office was pleasant, clean and the staff was incredibly nice and caring. They took genuine interest in the welfare of my little man (even to the point where they would ask him questions directly, a little odd, but also funny). I also didn't feel like they were pushing to add "extras" onto the bill (unnecessary procedures, special food). Their "office cat" was a nice little bonus - what a sweetheart. Because of the location on Water St., parking can be a nightmare, so plan accordingly. read more

If I could leave less stars I would. I have brought my 2 guys here for a year or so - everything fine and liked the vet. I brought my ten year old in for dental last week and he died during the procedure. I understand this is a rare complication ( 1 in 1000) and do no think there was anything done incorrectly HOWEVER. WE never received a call. We called to see when we could pick him up and they told us he was dead. Pretty brusquely, NO apologies and a bill for his cremation. I half expected and waited for a sorry for your loss card, which I've received when I had to put down a previous buddy. Nothing. Knowledgeable and courteous staff make stressful vet visits more pleasant. A few of the techs & desk staff have become personal friends over my many years and hundreds of visits. (I foster homeless cats & that means a lot of vet visits!) Dr C is very knowledgeable and flexible in her treatments, she is always willing to try more things to pinpoint or solve the problem, if you let her know the 1st option is not working. She is very sensitive to cost when deciding on treatments, and will give many options for you to decide on, based on your cost tolerance. I've seen at least 6 vets in this city over the years of doing cat rescue, but my personal pet cats always go to the Cat Doctor. read more

These people are amazing- we hold them in the highest regards. They are professionals, informed, caring and are always available. We had a very delicate cat with many complicated health issues over the past few years. I would have done anything for him and the people at Cat Doctor really supported me. We have meant to review their place many times but it's hard to put into words how spectacular they are and all that they did. I am so thankful for them because: 1. They gave my little guy such good care- I cannot emphasize this more but I felt like Dr. Christiansen knew so much more than other vets. I spent a good amount of time going from vet to vet a few years back with some uncommon symptoms and she was able to diagnose and get him on the right meds. 2. Kind of obvious and hopefully how every vet is but they were kind and gentle with him. Everyone there seemed very interested in my pets well being. It extended beyond what I'd expect and is difficult to put into words. 3. I was always followed up with changes in meds, was answered when I called with a question, and never felt like I was a burden or annoying-- I should say we were there weekly if not a few times a week for a few months. This was huge and so reassuring-- even in the few times that we had to take him to the emergency vet I always immediately called Dr. Christiansen to get her input and feedback. She would always suggest I bring him in and would then review everything they did and make adjustments as needed. 4. I felt they had a good handle on his situation and gave me the support to keep moving forward and then were direct when he wasn't going to make it much further. I was not judged or given false promises at any point. 5. Every visit, I was never rushed or hurried out the door. I was always able to share my thoughts and concerns and Dr. Christiansen was very receptive despite being busy. 6. Their office site is just amazing- the number of cat memorabilia is amazing. 7. We really felt like they were wonderful people to see- they have the perfect blend of professionalism and friendliness. I definitely felt cared for as a cat mom and knew I was in good hands. My boyfriend who often came with me to visits, which I know is a bit odd but he was obsessed with the cat and really liked the staff, often says how he would just like to go back and say hi. 8. After our little guy was put down they made a donation which still just touches me. This post doesn't totally convey how wonderful I think they are. We've been taking our two cats here for nearly five years. We've always been extremely satisfied with the quality of care and service. This year, one of our cats needed a benign tumor removed. Not only was the lump removed for a very modest price, but when our cat required follow-up care (surgical staples to keep the wound closed) they made great effort to fit us into the schedule as quickly as possible. They also performed this care free of charge, which we did not expect. Dr. Christensen is very knowledgeable and has given us lots of practical advice. Dr. Seibert has an extremely calming manner with cats (and people) which is helpful because we have two anxious cats that usually hate going anywhere. Because The Cat Doctor is cat-only, the entire staff is made up of cat people and you can see the vet any day of the week (without regard to whether a dog is in the office). I tend to be an overly-concerned pet owner, and the staff at The Cat Doctor does a great job of letting us know which services are important to our cats' health, and which are unnecessary. read more

Dr. Christiansen and her team are friendly, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. I haven't had any bad experiences here, and if I ever do, I will bring them to their attention. Dr Christensen has been seeing our cats for 14 years. She is always cairn and compassionate and has caught things that our local vet( we tried a mother vet closer to our home for a few months) missed and misdiagnosed. She has always given us at least a couple of options on how to deal with issues the cats have had. I don't think the Vet is bad, I just think several of the office aids/nurses are extremely rude and impatient.

The staff there are very knowledgeable and they took my sick cat in right away and brought him back to health. They best thing was that they updated me twice via a phone call while he was in their care. I'm a customer for life. Thanks Cat Doctor! read more

We took our 4 year old cat to Dr. Christensen for the first time a few weeks ago. Our cat had a large lump that 3 prior vets wanted to surgically remove for $750-$2000. I then visited Dr. Christensen who not only was wonderful, educational and compassionate but also removed that lump and cleaned her teeth for less than $500. That evening there was a little fluid leaking from her surgical site. I panicked and called the office, I was directed to a pager number. Within 5 minutes Dr. Christensen called back and offered to see our cat if necessary. Wonderful Customer service. Compassion, caring and love is shown by all at this office. i have never taken my darling cat poe to anyone but the cat doctor because the people there are kind, helpful and real human beings. i have been to other places in the past with other kitties years ago, but after finding dr christensen and her staff i feel no doubt as to where i am confident and relieved that they want to help. i was so impressed with the doctor when we had to let our 19 year old julius take the next step in his journey. she came to our home, eased all three of us and competently and kindly sent him on his way. she spent time with us afterwards and seemed as sad to see jules go as we were. i will always be grateful to her for that. i have and will continue to recommend this fine clinic to everyone who needs a vet for their kitties. dedicated to cats and their issues alone, i am happy that poe is in the hands of bunch of folks who know their stuff and enjoy being able to help in every way possible. read more

It's hard for me to critique a business that cares so much about animals, especially cats, but I have mixed reviews for the Cat Doctor. Two instances stand out in particular: first, I had a cat with chronic infections and cancer--she was pretty much in palliative care. I brought her in and she had her exam with a new doctor (new to me, at least) who was very combative. We had an argument in the examining room that eventually eased, but I never cared to see that particular vet again. Second, our other cat fell ill so we took him in. The vets recommended a crap ton of expensive tests and then, when the tests came back, told us he had hyperthyroidism. We treated him for about three weeks on this new food and then couldn't afford it anymore (sorry kitty). I grew suspicious of this diagnosis and about 9 months later took him to another vet in Shorewood. They ran the same tests and each one came back clean. There was nothing wrong with his thyroid. It's possible that the food we fed him for a few weeks "cured" the problem, or it's possible the vets at the Cat Doctor were wrong. Either way, it cost us a bundle. We decided to switch vets and have been very happy with their professional, kind, and cost-mindful services. read more
