Now I called thinking a vaccine appointment would be convenient but now I needed to schedule a wellness exam? I asked what was I there for in July and the clerk said end of life issue? My dog has been dealing with a minor ACL tear, and I've been carefully managing her recovery. At our annual checkup, I brought this up to Dr. Nelson, hoping for guidance on anything more I could do to support her healing. Instead of offering any helpful advice, she dismissively told me to "just let the knee tear" and "get ready for surgery." She then added something along the lines of, "Oh, and be ready for the other knee to go--just so you know, it'll cost about $3,500 per joint, so you better start saving up." This was beyond unprofessional. Not only was her response completely lacking in empathy, but it was also condescending and inappropriate. A vet's job is to help pet owners care for their animals, not to assume financial situations or push surgery without discussing alternatives. Needless to say, I will never be coming back here. If you want a vet who actually listens and supports you in making the best choices for your pet, look elsewhere.

I'm beyond upset and heartbroken over what my kitten went through after her spay procedure. She was…read morein obvious pain -- shaking, uncomfortable, and not acting like herself at all. I assumed it was just normal post-spay discomfort since we were told she received a pain shot that was supposed to last two days. It was the weekend, and I was grateful that someone I knew had leftover pain medication because she was visibly suffering. What I didn't realize until weeks later was that she had a burn hidden underneath her thick fur. By the time we discovered it, I was horrified. Burns carry a serious risk of infection, especially in such a small animal. No kitten should have to endure that kind of pain, especially from something that should have been completely preventable. When we called, they denied everything. One minute they said they don't use heating blankets, the next minute they said they do. Then they tried to blame her second-degree burn on the thin little recovery suit she was wearing -- which makes absolutely no sense. After that, they claimed she was in more pain because she had apparently just gone through a heat cycle and that her uterus had torn. They said they told me all of this at pickup -- but that is simply not true. The only thing I was told was that she was drooling more and that they gave her medication for that. Nothing about a torn uterus. Nothing about extra complications. Nothing that important. It's like it was a blame game to them. How do you not tell someone something that serious about their own pet? That is information any owner deserves to know immediately. This is negligence. There is no excuse for a preventable burn to go unnoticed and untreated, and there is no excuse for giving inconsistent explanations afterward. Proper care means thoroughly checking an animal before sending them home, being honest about any complications, and taking responsibility when something goes wrong. In the end, I didn't "save money" by going here. I ended up paying an expensive vet bill to treat the burn and make sure she didn't develop an infection. More importantly, my kitten suffered unnecessarily. That is something I can't get past. This entire experience has made me seriously question whether an assembly-line style spay and neuter clinic is truly safe for our pets. I would not wish this experience on anyone.

Until our 12-year-old canine love Zoey needed urgent medication for cancer surgery pain -- pain in the wake of tumor surgery performed by that vet. That vet and his telephone staff closed their door -- and that day's appointment schedule -- to a simple, albeit immediate, requested consult. But Dr. Butler immediately opened his door and his heart to our plight. Zoey got the prescription pain meds she needed as soon as we arrived at Parkland. Dr. Butler will very soon be facilitating our last good-bye to Zoey as our friend has days to live for the now rapidly advancing mast cell tumor. It's been just 5 weeks since her surgery at the hands of the other vet. As well, Dr. Butler will be our vet of record for the pointer puppy we have acquired. I feel his vet practice could be described as old style traditional. No whistles and bells here. But rather what I would call traditional veterinary care. And I like that. This veterinarian's focus seems away from the maxing of his bottom line -- in the realization that, with a compassionate approach to animal care and interaction with families, the bottom line will often take care of itself. I mean, seriously? Coupons for vet care along with Pizza Hut and Cousins Subs? Weird. Plus, one of the coupons they always send is a few bucks off a declaw surgery. And they use the word "gentle." ("Gentle, quality, experienced surgical care.") Now, I know Yelp isn't necessarily the place to discuss animal cruelty, but a vet clinic A). should NOT flat-out lie: there's no such thing as a a "gentle" amputation, and B) SHOULD encourage pet owners to treat their pets with dignity and kindness, not try to drum up business for unneeded surgeries by putting coupons in the mail.

I want to start off by saying I adopted this cat from the Wisconsin Humane Society knowing she may have persisting health issues, but I was (and am) prepared to take on that responsibility. As requested, I brought a stool sample from my kitty. This sample sat with me throughout the entire appointment, and when the appointment was finished, I asked the vet tech about her sample since no one asked for it. I was told, "oh we already have her sample". Obviously that was not the case as I had the bag of feces in my hand, so I asked another tech who came to realize they put another cat's fecal sample under my cat's name. I was willing to overlook this mistake had I had a pleasant experience with Dr. Poehlmann, but I did not. At first she was professional, but then I brought up my cat's health issues and she said, "this is not what I had in mind for a free WHS wellness exam". What an odd comment to make because obviously you can't expect every animal who comes to you to be in perfect health. Throughout the appointment, she continued to make inappropriate comments and grimacing faces when discussing my cat's health. Then, when going over potential treatment options going forward, including an "expensive surgery", she said, "I mean, if you aren't too attached, you can always return her". This comment absolutely baffled me because why would returning her be anything but a last resort? I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt with this comment since I am young and probably appear to not have the financial capability of caring for her appropriately. However, I have a doctorate's degree (in healthcare), and make more than enough to provide and care for my kitty. So no, I don't think this is an appropriate comment to make to a pet owner. Overall, this rushed, unproductive appointment showed me that this vet clearly lacks the compassion to love and care for my cat going forward.

That, coupled with the great reviews we read on line, made our decision to obtain an appointment for our (needy) cat, Jinx. From the first appointment on (after which we've had several due to our cat having a few on-going issues), we feel so very lucky to have found Park Pet Hospital. The folks there are all wonderful, caring folks. We've received services from both Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Poehlmann. They both instilled confidence in us and have been terrific to deal with. Both doctors absolutely are patient, informative, thorough and had "the touch;" putting Jinx at ease. The staff at the clinic are also VERY professional, friendly and handle everyone with kid gloves. Park Pet Hospital is an old school veterinary practice. The facility looks as if its been around for forty years or so, but it is extremely clean and immaculate. Cats have their own door to enter the facility, as do dogs. There is plenty of on site parking as well as available street parking which you probably will never need.
