Having previously worked directly with Cheryl on a specialized Rehab Team in our area providing care to multi-complex patients, I had already experienced her caring, calm demeanor, & expert professionalism in assessing what each individual needed, along with her ability to motivate & encourage patients to achieve recovery beyond their expectations. THEN, this past July 2024 I was diagnosed with lumbar spine injuries & contacted "Dr. Cheryl" for my own care! Over the course of 18 sessions, she performed as always, efficiently & effectively, in helping me to outline practical goals following her extensive evaluation of my strengths & weaknesses. Each session we progressed together through the incremental, necessary steps to approximate & achieve each goal, modifying exercises as necessary. At all times I knew exactly why we were completing each exercise & what would be the desired outcome as I persisted, not just in our 1 to 1 focused sessions, but inclusive of my daily Home Exercise Program that I began to follow on my own at home with the clear video internet instructions she customized for me. My results by early October when I "graduated" were nothing short of astounding! I was able to return to all daily activities & resume walking and rowing as before which was part of my weekly routine for exercising. Her assistant said "No pokes" She said next I'd be getting an oblation. I tried to speak with the doctor about what was happening with no luck. All was very strange. I cancelled all future appointments but kept getting a referral from, I guess, the oblation doctor. Obviously, this doctor does little talking. Within their preliminary paperwork, is a paragraph stating that they do not verify insurance. Now, my secondary insurer's website does show this facility as a provider. Of course, as is always the case, they advise verifying with the provider. The reason is simple. The provider knows, or should know, wether or not their contract is current. So here's the rub. If they aren't currently in the network, the patient is stuck with the balance that Medicare doesn't cover. As I have stated, I have over 30 years of experience as a clinician and have dealt with insurance as a provider and as a patient. I have never, in the entirety of my career, seen a provider with such a clause. CAVEAT EMPTOR, let the buyer beware. We place our trust in clinicians and don't expect them to place us "on the hook" for their lack of due diligence.

Another doctor in the BayCare system told me, "Oh, Dr. Brown? She's excellent." Based on her diagnosis and treatment, I believe it. She's action-oriented, determined, and clearly committed to making a positive impact. I also received exceptional care from one of her nurses, Jessica, who called me after hours to check on my condition. Unfortunately, my experience gets mixed from there. You'll see negative reviews of this practice, and here's my read on why. Dr. Brown is brilliantly competent, but she can come across as cold and unempathetic. I say this as a leadership psychologist (Dr. Brown -- you should reach out to me; I can help). I noticed the same thing with another assistant of hers: highly competent, but no warmth in the communication. That's not uncommon in medicine. It's unfortunate, because this team is brilliant with the Xs and Os. It's the Jills and Joes part that could use some elevation. Then came the moment I lost some trust. I had a flare-up and was in a lot of pain. I called and asked for a same-day appointment. The person at the front desk said, "I think we can get you in here or at our other facility. I'll call you back with a time." She never called. I'm guessing it was a simple oversight by someone overwhelmed with other tasks, and I could have called back myself -- that's on me. But the follow-through was Dr. Brown's responsibility. She's the leader. It was disappointing, and I lost some trust. I'm still rooting for Dr. Brown and her office, and I will try them again. Everyone makes mistakes. But this time, it will be with hesitation.
