My 12-year old athlete daughter started feeling pain in her ankle & foot. I stupidly thought it was overuse issue from a travel-level sport and had her use my crutches to keep weight off her foot for a few weeks. It did not help or improve. Luckily, we were referred to Dr. Cheung! After asking and listening to my daughter's issues, Dr. Cheung ordered an MRI to confirm her suspicions of what was going wrong. The MRI did prove her diagnosis of tibial tendonitis. When we came back for the MRI results, she casted my daughter's lower leg & foot right in her office. Awesome. After a few weeks of cast, then she then moved her to a walking boot then ankle support. My daughter was completely healed in time to start the next season of her travel sport. No complaints or reoccurrence since. Dr. Cheung is professional and clearly, an expert in her field. I am shocked to see any reviews that state otherwise. I was referred to Dr. Catherine Cheung last year and I'm not sure if my review here will ever express how happy I am with the results, the gratitude I feel with her care, understanding, superb knowledge and knowing I was in great hands. In our initial consultation, she told me I would need surgery for both of my "dancers feet" or aka bunion and bunionette surgery. I had ZERO hesitation in moving forward (first with my right foot) because she made me feel extremely comfortable, answered all my questions and the fact that my misaligned feet would feel and look so much better was a win win! Elena, assistant to Dr. Cheung and surgical scheduler is excellent. She responds quickly and was so kind to even send me all the links to the supplies I would need after the surgery! With a thousand additional questions I had she answered every single one of them with patience and kindness. A GEM! On the day of surgery I was so nervous. Thinking about being cut open and bones being broken GAH!! I was a bundle of nerves but Dr. Cheung came into the room with her zen presence - she was so calm and reassured me everything would be ok, made me laugh (I can't remember about what) but my nerves went down and I was ready! After the surgery she came in to check on me saying all went well - OF COURSE - and even after the surgery she was just an email or a phone call away! When the stitches came out, the scars healed and my foot therapy completed I nearly cried. Tears of JOY!! My foot looked SO pretty I would take pictures of it just to admire and send to my mom LOL! My orthopedists Dr. Gordon and Sampson both recommended Dr. Cheung to me as a second opinion.  She has operated on and treated their wives which was the best indication of her qualifications possible.  I called and briefly explained my issue and I was sent to get an xray since there isn't an xray in her office. She orders a certain type of xray which is why I was sent to an xray facility with a higher quality machine.  She is located in SF with a parking lot underneath the building as well as street parking.   She was very helpful and informative and clearly knew how to treat me.  She was conservative and didn't push any treatment on me but helped guide me in my decisions.  I had an overuse injury from wearing improper shoes.  With the pandemic it's more difficult to shop in person for shoes so she gave me some online options.  I suggested a cortisone injection and custom orthotics but she wanted me to wait to try a less expensive otc product and different shoes.  I also went to physical therapy per her suggestion and am happy to report that a couple months after I've been seeing her I'm pain free. The other orthopedist I had seen prior to Dr. Cheung recommended surgery but it is clear that Dr. Cheung uses surgery as a last resort.  She is efficient, extremely knowledgable and also kind.  I highly recommend her. read more

I was very excited to go see Dr Cheung for the first time, after reading all the good reviews. On Sept 29,2023, I did go see her, every thing went well but she was not able to give me a diagnosis at all. I've been in pain since August12, 2023. I broke my Baby toe on Mid June 2023. Which by then was not not so painful. It was something else, I didn't know what it was and so did her. She didn't advice me on anything else. I asked for an MRI which supposedly she comply with, she basically told me you have pain syndrome. TJ, her front desk, assistant basically everything for her was more helpful than the Dr. Cheung. He said he submitted the paperwork to the Insurance for the MRI. Which until now I'm still waiting for an answer. A week after I saw her my pain was getting worse on my toe next to the Baby toe was it getting purple, I could barely walk. So I decided to go to ER. I stayed there half day until we found an answer to my severe pain. I was diagnosed with PAD Peripheral Artery Disease. Something Dr Cheung couldn't figure out and she's a podiatrist a really bad one. Please don't let Drs . Tell you what you have until it's certified. This Drs shouldn't be in the medical industry if they don't know anything. I'm glad I took charge of my health with the help of a nurse that my Oldest daughter works with. I thank God for that . It's CRITICAL that you read this review as carefully as you can, because your safety depends on it!!! It's a long one, but you'll thank me later. I had made an appointment with this "doctor" because my foot was in excruciating pain. No, seriously...I was limping. I'd been having pain in my foot for quite some time, putting it off. & then COVID happened, so that just delayed my treatment even longer. It got to the point where I couldn't walk a single block with out limping. I searched Yelp, as I usually do, and found how many 5 star reviews she had. She took my insurance, I was on my way. I called & left a voicemail explaining my situation. The secretary called me shortly thereafter & was able to schedule me fairly soon. Everything seemed kosher until the "doctor" came in to see me. She was pleasant enough. She was quick & didn't seem to want to spend too much time with me. She knew what issues I was having, & couldn't decide on a treatment plan. Offering me a cortisone shot, physical therapy, X-rays, suggesting I buy Hoka shoes from Amazon ....never landing on one option. When I asked about the Hoka shoes, she advised me they're a brand of shoes, like Nike. I advised her the extreme difficulty I had finding shoes in my size. My feet are short, but extra wide. I told her that the 3/4 OTC orthotics I had were actually women's, because nothing was close to my size. She then said to buy the Hoka's in a women's size. I once again refuted that although I could probably find a pair of Hoka's in a women's size, the width will be an issue. This is something I've dealt with for most of my adult life, so I kinda know. Frankly, as a so called podiatrist, so should she. She ended up giving me a cortisone shot & telling me that although she has an X-ray machine in her office, she wanted me to go get it at the hospital (most likely because my insurance won't pay her enough to take an X-ray). She wanted me to go to 2 specific locations & seemed irritated when I requested to go to the hospital close to me that has all of my information already. She said she wouldn't have access to their systems, & I quickly offered to bring her a CD with the X-rays on my next appointment for her review. When I walked out, I again stated my concerns about buying Hoka's in my size when the secretary handed me a photocopy of an Amazon screenshot for Hoka shoes. So she handed me another photocopy of insoles from Amazon. "Be sure to get the green ones!" she said. I got the X-rays the next day & attempted to make an appointment for a follow up, & to allow the "doctor" to review them. The secretary was refusing to schedule an appointment to follow up. She said to bring the CD to the office & give it to the other doctor in the office, and she can get it later since they were in her Marin office. I again tried to make an appointment for her S.F. office, & the secretary suggested MAILING the CD to Marin. When I emailed her to tell her I ordered the women's shoes, & they didn't fit, I asked if there was another option, because the insoles she (the secretary, not the "doctor") suggested were over $50, & that a lot of cash to "try" and see if they help...they can't be returned once cut to size. The response email I got explained Cheung's incompetence. Her reply was that I shouldn't worry about the cost of the shoes, & that she'll write me a prescription for them so that my insurance might pay for them. See above - advised her shoes don't fit. My complaint was about the cost of the *insoles*. Ugh! She also said I could buy a boot from Amazon. (At this Pont, I'm thinking she has major stock in AMZN) Cheung wasn't able to settle on ANY treatment plan. Cortisone. Hoka shoes. Insoles. Physical therapy. Boot. X-rays. But not once did she give any other information than to get/buy everything. She NEVER gave any medical instructions. Useless. I finally said screw it, & asked my PCP for a referral. He sent me to an orthopedist. I went to the orthopedist. He reviewed my X-rays that I brought him on CD. When I told his assistant about the idiot podiatrist I'd seen, WITHOUT naming her, but only saying she was downtown, SHE knew Cheung's name, and said they get "A LOT of people from her"!!! Now THAT'S scary! Here's why your safety could be at risk. When I told the orthopedist my entire ordeal, he was appalled that a so-called "doctor" would inject cortisone into that area of the foot. Cortisone melts fat. The fat cells are destroyed, and the fat disappears. And that's dangerous for the balls of your feet. Your body doesn't replenish that fat. It's gone forever, and you're walking on bone. He said, (& I quote) "Don't you ever let anyone do that to your foot again!" Read her other reviews where people have said she's done the same to them!! She patiently explained the problem with my foot and outlined several options for treatment available; allowing me time to make an informed decision. I found Dr. Cheung through my insurance. I was having pain in my right big toe, and my primary care physician wrote me a referral to go see her. At first she seemed to be patient and knowledgeable about her craft, but then didn't know how to treat my case. She said that although she has an X-ray machine in her office, she said that it doesn't produce the best quality images and suggested I go have them taken at a hospital or clinic. She had her preferences, but I decided to go to the hospital near my house. She said I would need a cortisone shot in my foot because she said it was "capsulitis". I am very afraid of needles, but decided to go ahead with it. The pain was immediately gone, but she said that was due to the anesthetic in the shot. She was right, it didn't last, and the pain was back in just a few hours. She also told me to buy shoes from Amazon and gave me a photographed paper of the brand. I bought the shoes from Zappos and they didn't help. They were extremely uncomfortable. luckily, Zappos allows returns easily. I went back to my primary care physician, and he referred me to a different podiatrist that is closer to my house.. The podiatrist said that the pain wasn't due to inflammation, and I shouldn't have been given a cortisone shot in my foot. He told me I would need a orthotic, and said I could try an over the counter one from a place called Shoes & Feet, or I could go the more expensive route and get custom orthotics. Because money is tight right now, I decided to go the over the counter route and bought some insoles at Shoes & Feet. I've been pain free since I put them in my shoes! I have a follow up appointment with my new (& more competent) podiatrist in 6 weeks to confirm everything is working for me. Do NOT waste your time going to Dr. Cheung! I had recurring gout and dr Cheung suggested I get a redraw of my blood test to check kidney function. If she hadn't done that,I would be a goner. They found my kidney had failed and during stent surgery found a malignant tumor on my pelvis. My regular doctor didn't check kidney function on the blood test he had done a few weeks previously,although he knew I had chronic gout. If it had not been for her incredible care, who knows how long I would have to live. I'm having my bad kidney removed along with the large tumor next week. She is my guardian angel. She saved my life, Incredible care. Run to her ( if you can)when you need a caring and astute caregiver. I also broke my toe during the gout outbreak and she ordered a CT scan which did show a fracture , which my other doctor said was just a sprain. To be honest, I was very pretty surprised to see all of the positive reviews on Yelp about Dr. Catherine Cheung because my experience was far from positive. I very rarely write negative reviews, but I felt beyond obligated to do so regarding my experience overall with Dr. Cheung. I have had issues with my foot/ankle for almost 10 years. I had surgery on my tendons a few years back and when I recently sprained my ankle, something didn't feel right so I looked for foot specialist to get it checked out. That's when I stumbled up Dr. Cheung's Yelp page and saw pretty positive reviews, so I thought I would give it a chance. I had 2 appointments with Dr. Cheung, the first one was a VERY brief (10 minute) consultation where she recommended I get an MRI done. She was not welcoming or warm and seemed to be very rushed. Not how I was wanting to be treated when I was having severe foot pain. I went and got the MRI done and then scheduled my next appointment. For my 2nd appointment, I had the earliest appointment of the day and was the only patient in the waiting room. The front desk assistants were talking extremely loudly about how one of them recently had unprotected sex and how one of them could potentially be pregnant from a night out. This was EXTREMELY unprofessional and did not make me feel comfortable. Finally, Dr. Cheung came to see me to go over my MRI results. She read the results verbatim that the radiologist wrote and didn't take the time to go over the images with me. She literally said this and I quote, "There are way too many issues going on with your foot/ankle and I don't even know where to start or what to recommend." Hearing this from someone who is supposed to be an "expert" in their field was extremely discouraging and frustrating. I have been an active runner my whole life an and pretty passionate about exercising, and when I asked when I can start working out again or "when can I run again?" she simply said, "I don't know." To hear that she couldn't even recommend ANY course of action for the 3 different tears in my foot, she couldn't advise when I would be able to exercise, she pretty much couldn't say anything, was beyond ridiculous. **To note, when she read the MRI results, she told me that I had a tear in my Achilles when in fact I did NOT have a tear there. The fact that she can provide such false and innacurate information to patients is insane! I have since then gone to another doctor that was recommended to me by a friend, and have found out that the notes from the radiologist from the original MRI were inaccurate (the ones that Dr. Cheung read directly to me) and now have to have ANOTHER MRI + Xrays all within 2 months. The process with Dr. Cheung has not only been extremely expensive, it has also been misleading and extremely unhelpful. If you need to see a good foot doctor or specialist in the area, I would recommend seeing Dr. Jenny Sanders @ Financial District Foot and Ankle Center. She has been so helpful and actually took the time to understand what I have been dealing with. If you are serious about getting better, I would highly recommend avoiding Dr. Cheung. read more

She made some very judgemental remarks- which is not professional. Also, looking at the degree on the wall, seems like she trained at some unknown random place which I could not recognize the name. Thirdly, she did not seem knowledgable and was not sincere in making sure I got the recommendations right. Catherine- Its not all about the business and making money. Since 2004 I have reviewed on yelp only 4 times. It takes an awful lot to get me there. Visited the dr. in March 2015 and dr. suggested I try custom orthotics. they made plaster cast's of my feet however I did not agree to purchase orthotics, which they checked after the casting that my out of pocket would be about $400. I never received the devices/product and turns out I never needed them. After receiving a bill I called the office to explain I never actually approved ordering them and don't want them. Their stance is they are here and to come n' get em. I requested a copy of what they said was my authorization to order the orthotics. I received a copy of my registration form with my Name, Address, and Phone number. The Dr. visit was actually great, and Dr. Cheung was very communicative. More the billing department tends to talk over you while you are explaining why the call, and then when Carolyn in billing repeats back what she heard as my concern, it's completely wrong. I contacted my insurance and they don't understand why the Dr.'s office doesn't just return the orthotics which it was explained happens more than often and they (the manufacturer) would gladly credit back the Dr.. If you order a $400 bottle of wine on a night out, don't like it, you send it back. If your food is underdone, you mention it, and it is corrected or taken back. For some reason this office is not on that page. There are a lot of podiatrists in the city. Thankfully. I wish Dr. Cheungs staff and billing were more customer friendly. They have lost one new patient/customer/referral source over (what I perceive) as a piddly bill that they could have resolved easily from the get go. I even called a second time to ask why they don't just return to the manufacture rather than all the billing which BCBS informed me this morning they will reverse on my end, and the dr ends up losing a patient. The response was "Uhhmmmmm... welll Uhhhh we paid for them. .. and hmmm welll"... Life goes on. read more

I've seen Dr. Cheung at the SF facility and Corte Madera, which is close to where I live. I went to her as I'd had successful knee surgery from her colleague, Dr. Elly LaRoque. I'd had pain in my right foot (toes and ankle) for a while and a Podiatrist I'd seen several times said there was nothing he could do, but suggested I wear a toe separator. Dr. Cheung determined I had stress fractures (which I could plainly see in the X-ray she showed me) and a bunion. My right ankle is, as she put it, a mess. It is! She wanted to perform the toe and bunion surgery and wait and see on the ankle. She advised me of the recovery time, and what I would need post-surgery (crutches, walking boot, etc.). Surgery was a complete success and I'm walking with no pain whatsoever. I get angry when I realize I was misdiagnosed and this problem could have been addressed much sooner. Dr. Cheung is an intelligent, warm, caring physician. I appreciated that she informed me of all the options, but urged on the side of "less is more." She's highly trained and I really like her personality. I'm so confident in her skills that my husband is now seeing her and will have foot surgery in the next couple of months. read more

Often times, doctors rush in, see you for five seconds while they scribble notes down and prod your body, all without ever looking at you or acknowledging your existence. God forbid you ask a question and annoy them! Well, happy to discover that my visit to Dr. Cheung was the opposite! I saw Dr. Cheung for foot trouble. She came highly reco from a friend with high standards. Dr. Cheung was great -- answered my questions, explained what was going on, my options, etc. Great bedside manner. I didn't feel rushed or a retard for asking questions (and I like to ask a lot!). Felt like she actually wanted to help (gasp!). I know for certain that Dr. Cheung has perhaps one of the most extensive training backgrounds of any foot & ankle surgeon in San Francisco. She did her surgical residency program with Kaiser Permanente in West Los Angeles (hardly random) and after three years of dedicated foot & ankle surgical training she did another 12 month fellowship with one of the most esteemed foot & ankle surgeons in the country at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. Calling her training into question is very misleading. If I need to see a foot and ankle surgeon in the private practice arena I would choose Dr. Cheung. read more

Dr Cheung has really helped me twice so far, once when I fractured my foot, and now with my bunions. She was candid and clear about what my options were and how she could go about fixing them surgically; she showed me my x-rays and pointed out all the elements pertinent to my surgery, and her office was able to schedule me incredibly quickly when I mentioned I wanted to get it done before thanksgiving; it was an offhand comment, but they really got the ball rolling and got back to me in a couple of days, ready to schedule that week. The surgery experience itself was very positive, she and the anesthesiologist were both very comforting and understanding, and I really felt very confident in their competence and skill. The team at St. Francis was delightfully friendly and caring. She's called twice to check in on me ( the procedure was 2 days ago) and I feel really good about the decision I made! I don't write many Yelp reviews, but I just had my first visit with Dr. Cheung and my experience was so good, I can't keep it to myself. Seriously, it was the best doctoring experience I've ever had. As a new patient, I showed up a few minutes early to fill out the required patient paperwork.... but the appointment started at the scheduled time, so no wasted time for me in the waiting room (also, I didn't have to wait in the exam room). Dr. Cheung listened to my description of what I was experiencing and efficiently assessed my foot pain. She was able to give me a cortisone shot on the spot to provide relief. I was not surprised that she wanted me to get x-rays, but I was astonished that she sent me across the street for x-rays (same day) and had me bring the images back to her office (same day) and reviewed the x-rays and short term and longer term treatment plan with me (same day). The whole set-up (fill out paperwork, meet with doctor, get x-rays, meet with doctor a second time to receive treatment and review x-rays/diagnosis) was less than 1 hour and 15 minutes.... and with minimal waiting around on my part! She did a great job of answering my questions and addressing my concerns. I definitely highly recommend her if you have toe or foot pain! read more

Dr. Cheung and her staff are terrific! She is very easy to talk with and showed great concern about my injury. She listened with open ears and sympathized with me. I came to see Dr. Cheung because I was disappointed with my previous Worker's Compensation referred podiatrist. Her assistant Lisa is friendly, warming, very helpful and down to earth. She kept me updated with regards to getting approval with Worker's Compensation. She made sure that I had all the proper documentation filled out prior to the first visit so that I can see Dr. Cheung as soon as I walked in. As this is my first visit, she made me feel welcomed as if I have seen Dr. Cheung on many occasions. Dr. Cheung asked me background questions to figure out how I injured my foot, what other injuries I had, and what activities I have been doing since my latest injury. She had her radiologist technician to do an x-ray to see if my hairline stress fracture has healed. She will be requesting arch supports so that it maybe helpful in my job. I recommend Dr. Cheung because she doesn't satisfy Worker's Compensation's wants but she truly wants the patient to heal and to feel pain free. I cannot say enough great things about my experience so far with Dr. Cheung and her staff! I came to Dr. Cheung because I wanted a doctor who would be very easy going, yet professional and to point about the best option for fixing a bunion on my foot. From my very first call, the staff was extremely friendly and prompt. When I first met with Dr. Cheung she was very clear and concise about what treatment she felt was best and what the next steps were. There was no fluff, no extra appointments just for the sake of trying different options that she knew would not be as quick and effective as surgery. Her office was able to schedule my surgery for two weeks later to fit my schedule and I was able to schedule the post-op appointments at the Corte Madera office since it was more convenient for me. I promptly received calls every time there was an update with my insurance coverage, the surgery timing, etc. This was my very first surgery, yet I never felt one bit of anxiety thanks to Dr. Cheung and her staff. She assured me that the surgery would be quick and easy, and that I should have little to no pain afterwards. I am three weeks post-op and she was completely right. The surgery was done in less than 30 minutes and I woke up feeling great and totally pain-free. Even after the local wore off, I only took the pain meds at night in case I hit my foot. My foot looks and feels great already, and I can't wait to see how it is after another month. Great experience with Dr. Cheung. She is very cautious about everything she does! I highly recommend her as a Pediatrics Dr. She had to give me a shot in my foot, yes it hurt but she delivered it with great care and a stable hand. I really appreciated everything she did to help me. Though she is great my one problem is with the quality issues the orthotics their service made me. The are very expensive and poorly constructed. They work which is great! However the foam rubber part of them just peels up making it bunched constantly under my feet. It is a huge frustration! Maybe they will fix this issue, or replace when I come in next time? Even though this really annoys me and just doesn't seem right. I am still giving five stars for the Doctors services... read more

I have been dealing with numerous podiatrists while trying to find comfort with the pain of my feet. I can finally say that I have found the perfect professional in her speciality. I can't thank enough Dr. Cheung and her staff (special thanks to Elena)! Dr. Cheung performed bunionectomy surgeries on both of my feet in April and July of this year. Now my feet feel and look great! Dr. Cheung understands how important it is for women to have aesthetically pleasing feet after surgery (with little scarring, correct shape and ability to wear heels) so she makes an incision on the side, not the top of your foot, and makes sure your big toe is not over-corrected so you can wear heels. The entire process (consultation, surgeries, post-op appointments, billing) was as smooth as it could be. Her office gives you a list of SF Bay Area physical therapists which is very helpful for scheduling post-op PT. Scheduling appointments and billing was painless. The surgeries were at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital (due to my insurance) but I know she also operates at a surgical center. I had not even one issue at the hospital, both surgeries started on time and the hospital staff was very professional and kind. They did say that Dr. Cheung is the best bunion surgeon, and one of the nurses who assisted me had her surgery recently done by Dr. Cheung as well. I actually miss going to her appointments - Dr. Cheung is kind, patient and cheerful! She is also very honest and straightforward and answered all of my questions (million of them)! I came to Dr. Catherine Cheung to get a second opinion as I had been misdiagnosed first for a stress/hairline fracture first and wanted to confirm if I really did have cartilage damage which was what I was told after the first misdiagnosis. Dr. Cheung's reviews on yelp led me to her and I can vouch that she is genuine and that her yelp reviews aren't fluff. Although, I didn't end up having any damage to my ankle (whew, so glad I decided to get a second opinion) and didn't have to go through treatment with Dr. Cheung - I do want to commend her on her friendly yet professional demeanor. Am hoping I don't have to come see her again but If I did have an issue with my foot/ankle in the future - she would definitely be my go to podiatrist! read more
