The temple presents the Three Pure Ones at the centre along with many other Tian Zun on the side. I feel really gratified to be able to find a place like home in US, where people share the same belief of Taoism.

The woman that's always at the counter, with a very outgoing personality, seems to know everyone that walks in there! The times that I've gone in, I've noticed different folks cleaning up, adding more incense sticks to the holders, fixing the fruit and flowers, sweeping the floor, adding a bottle of beer to the statue praying area, LOL. I'm not sure if they are official members, I don't get the sense that they were working on that day, more like passing by. But it's nice to see this communal effort and comfortable in the space. It's mostly a Cantonese speaking crowd, but I heard another dialect spoken on a recent visit. The woman at the counter probably has working knowledge in Mandarin too. I am not an expert, but when I go, it's usually for the Chinese New Year & my fortune, or to pay respects to elders that have passed. Every little slot that you see at each offering area - that's where you make donation. At the front of the area, there is a table top pedestal filled with a little slips of yellow paper, individually bundled by a rubber band. Donate $1 and pick a fortune. The next 2 tables have candle flames, bundles of incense sticks. Take 3 incense and light them, take them & bow 3x's at the 3rd table & stick them into the pot of sand. At the back there's padded low benches for you to kneel, bow 3 times, and pay respect. Another slot under the statue to make a donation, which may benefit your future. There's containers of Guan Yin Sticks. You can take one and kneel back down in front of the statue. Gently shake it, hold with both hands, hold it at an angle and shake with a gentle chopping motion. A stick should fall out. You want 3 sticks to fall out individually, write down the number in the order that they fell out. That's your Guan Yin Lot, look up your fortune according to those numbers. If relates to your health, wealth, big transactions, relationships, energy (more or less), ability to make large decisions. The front part of the temple has a lot of boxes of souvenirs & gifts to dig through. Lots of bracelets, which are prettier than the tourist shops on Mott St. Cash Only! There's boxes of free books and the front windows are filled with different little statues, objects, and bodhisattva statues. I can't say that I am an expert, but this is the way I've experienced the temple. The last time that I went, the lady at the counter was talking really loudly with some folks, it was actually a little distracting while I was in the back. Overall, this is the temple in the area that I'm familiar with, and choose to go to.

The way Daoism or Taoism works is everything lives in harmony and balance. You know the Ying Yang symbol? That is part of Daoism, from what I understand. That things exist in harmony, man and woman, earth and water, your back with your front. Yin and yang are always opposite and equal qualities. When one reaches its peak, it will without fail begin to transform into the opposite: for example, when a seed is planted in the spring, it reaches its bloom in the summer (yang) and then produce more seeds and die in winter (yin). This is an endless cycle and it happens again and again. The way I see it, yin and yang means the opposites to me. In our world yin and yang exist together as parts of a mutual whole. This is Taoism to me, I think. So taking the stuff above.....if I write review that is good, the gods is going to smile at me...if I write a bad review.....I might as well say bye to everyone now! 5 stars for peace and harmony in my world!

I was a member in the 1980's and 90's when I lived in NY. I took my daughter to visit in the Fall…read moreof 2022, and some of the same members were still there. That shows dedication and family. I was active in their needle exchange program at the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and they continue to do wonderful works of social justice. Someone else commented they were atheist and felt welcome at Judson. It is open and welcoming to all. They still display art gifted by Yoko Ono in the 80's if memory serves. Old and new merge at Judson, and I wish I could find a church even half as spiritual, warm, and caring since I've moved to the Bible belt, but there is nowhere like it. Judson is dually aligned with ABC and UCC denominations. I miss y'all!

I'm an atheist, and I dig this church…read more Judson was founded as a Baptist church in 1890 and--according to its website--is dually-aligned with the American Baptist Church and the United Church of Christ. Importantly, they welcome everyone, and host community events such as the Really Really Free Market (last Sunday of the month) and various community performance projects. In 1999, Rev. Billy put on a week-long extravaganza here called "Millenium's Neighborhood." At its founding, it was an important source of drinking water for the neighborhood; Judson sought to bring together the riff-raff of the immigrant class and the wealthy people north of Washington Square. As a matter off fact, Judson's community-oriented work dates back at least to the 1950s. The most recent event I attended at Judson was a memorial for a HIV-positive transsexual equestrienne which featured a few nudes of her in the slide show. Candles were arranged in a horseshoe shape, and the whole event was not only well-attended but incredibly moving. Judson is a church Christ himself would have been glad to be a member of!

The church itself is spectacular. The mass was very happy and very positive. The choir was pretty grand too. The church is very inclusive and welcomes Catholic's who may have been forgotten. I think I'll return next year.
