The music program is exceptionally strong, with top-notch directors and a roster of professional musicians that rivals those of NYC churches. Every Sunday they deliver concert-quality music, and there are opportunities for singing and playing handbells, at different levels, for anyone who would like to join. The program is excellent, somehow, without being exclusive or elitist. The Director of Children's and Youth Ministry, who runs the youth groups, is hilarious. The kids love him. He finds the right mix of games, lessons and fellowship to engage students, and ensures EVERY student feels welcome and part of the community. Last, but not least, the sermons are first-rate. From the pulpit, I want to learn something and be challenged to change something. I find that at RCB. The sermons are thought-provoking, assume (correctly) a high level of knowledge and sophistication of the congregation, and push each listener to reassess how his/her actions are reflective (or not reflective) of the week's Christian principle. We worried when we moved to the suburbs that we would not find a church that matched our family's differing interests and hopes for a faith community. We need not have. Over the past several years, RCB has become our family's home.

It was the iconic first day of fake spring in New York City. That day in early March where you…read morethink winter is behind you, only for it to be 31 degrees 2 days later. We found ourselves wandering aimlessly through Fidi, when I saw this gothic-like church sticking out like a purple cow amidst the modern skyscrapers that were brutally frame mogging it. It felt like a glitch in the matrix where one parcel of land was still in its form from the 1800s. It turned out to be St. Pauls Chapel, built in 1766. I geek out over stuff like this, so I walked onto the grounds and read all the little plaques. It was once surrounded by farmland and orchards and was known as a "remote country church," that accommodated parishioners living on the outskirts of town. It blew my mind how these "outskirts" are now some of the most valuable real estate on the planet. I couldn't help but wonder what this chapel would say if it could talk. It's seen EVERYTHING. I need that time-lapse so bad. This thing is also made of TEFLON. It survived a fire in 1776 that took out a quarter of the city, and most of Lower Manhattan. 225 years later, it survived 9/11 with no physical damage... it's 800 feet away from ground zero and survived without a scratch??? It then became a place where recovery workers went to rest, eat, and receive medical care. I just get fascinated that places like St. Pauls, with so much history, are all over this beautiful city. Nifty to be walk into a building where George Washington once frequented!…read more The only colonial era church left in Manhattan, this building opened in 1766 as part of the Trinity Church (now located on Broadway and Wall Street) several blocks south, and continues to this day to be a functioning Episcopal congregation. During 9/11 it served nine months as a base for first responders to rest and recover from the grueling efforts to clear the destruction and debris. inside the church is an exhibit with information on the recovery process and honoring the workers and lives of those impacted by this tragic event. Several memorials and artwork pieces commemorate 9/11, including the Bell of Hope, recognizing the healing that continues and the resilience of the community. Aside from above there are also several historic artifacts such as the Montgomery Monument --dedicated to a Revolutionary War officer of the same name commissioned by the Continental Congress, the altar, pulpit and rails in the chapel, and to me most interesting one of the earliest depictions of the Great Seal of America: E Pluribus Unum, "Out of Many, One."
