    Welcome!

Philippines Review #5 When traveling to or from Boracay Island, you will need to go through the Caticlan Jetty Port & Passenger Terminal. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/caticlan-jetty-port-and-passenger-terminal-malay?select=nHkHtqgSp8feOB5JoO94Fw The way it works is like this: You fly from Manila (or any other city) to the small Caticlan airport. From there you hire a tricycle to take you to the Jetty terminal (3-4 minute ride). Once at the Jetty port you'll buy a ticket for the boat ride to the Boracay Jetty port. Additionally you will need to pay an Environmental fee (P75) as well as a Terminal fee (P100 each direction). Best to have CASH on hand too, because they don't take credit cards. There are ATM's available if you need one. Boats depart approx. every 20 minutes. Once the 24 passenger boat is ready to load, you go to the boat with your luggage in tow and get on. FYI there will be plenty of guys offering to carry your luggage to the boat for you. You're supposed to pay them P20 (about 50 cents) per bag, but they expect more. Once the boat is loaded and ready to go, it only takes about 10 minutes to the Boracay Jetty Port.... and you are ready to start your vacation! It may not be the cleanest or most comfortable passenger terminal, but the whole system works well and runs like a well oiled machine.

This port was part of the The Amazing Race Philippines. And you just joined the show! Remember everyone from your plane, bus, or taxi becomes your competition. Read Joey's and Kevin's reviews. They cover the procedures & prices very well. So a wave of passengers arrive and chaos ensues. Porters rushing to grab luggage and allocate themselves to customers, tour operators finding and guiding their sheep, luggage whizzing around, children milling about while frazzled parents try to use their brains, and passengers rushing to the fee windows and bunching up in a semi-disorganized line. Once you have your fee tickets, just take your porter's lead and you'll be fine. He'll shadow you through the building and then even load them on the boat if necessary. And I'm going to scold all the cheapskates right now: *** tip them *** I witnessed many people get annoyed and brush off the porters and some even tried to avoid tipping them. 50 cents to a buck is nothing. Have a heart and help a local earn some pay! The least hassle option: Cebu Pacific partnered with Southwest Tours to offer a smooth transfer package to their plane ticket. It's cheaper to purchase with your plane ticket than directly through Southwest Tours. At 700 php ($14 USD), totally worth it. This was a round trip door to door all inclusive service. Caticlan airport pickup, jetty port, private boat ride, and van ride to your hotel. Some seasoned Boracay travelers chided me for getting gouged. I'm guessing I might have saved 300-400 pesos figuring it out all on my own. I spared myself the aggravation - I'm on vacation y0! They emailed me prior to arrival and departure to confirm my hotel and flight times. I didn't have to wait in the fare lines. And they also operate their own private boats at the port. You still have to tip the porter tho!

Transportation to and from Boracay is organized but, still a bit chaotic once it's peak season. I usually arrive via Kalibo Airport then travel to Caticlan Jetty Port. It takes about 2-3hours, depending on how fast your driver is. At Caticlan Jetty Port, this is where you will ride the ferry to get to Boracay Island. Once you arrive, visitors need to pay for 3 different fees: the "Environmental Fee" (Php75), the "Terminal Fee" (Php100), and the ticket for the ferry of your choice. For the ferry, there are 2 options for the crossing to and from Boracay. First option is the motorized boats/bangkas. The fare during the day is Php25 and it's Php30 at night. Second option is the ferry crossing with "Montenegro Lines" (Php100 during peak season). It's air-conditioned and smooth sailing all the way. The ferry service between Caticlan and Boracay starts as early as 5AM and the last trip is around 11PM (depending on the season and number of passengers arriving due to delayed flights). Honestly, the whole process is a little stressful especially if you are with big groups and people who do not follow the payment flow or the lines. So, just stick to the process and everything will run smoothly. Good luck! :P

If you want to be confused, this is a good place to be. Haha. No one here really explains what to do once you get dropped off by van. This is what needs to be done to go to the small resorts on the island of Boracay, Philippines. Once you arrive at the airport, you pay for transfers to the island. Make sure if you paid for island transfer with your hotel package, ask where to go. We didn't know we paid and was directed to pay at one of the shuttle services again. You will take a van first that takes @two hours and be dropped off here. Caticlan Jetty port and passenger terminal which is close to Shangri-La Boracay port. You enter the port building and you should go to the desk where there is staff sitting down, they will ask you to sign papers for your party. They will ask to sign your name and address and how many in our party. Not the most friendly folks... They will ask you to go through a hall way entrance to wait in another small waiting room. Someone will call you when you are ready to go to the boat. You should know, there is no AC in this building and it's super hot. This is the port drop off going to the islands and going back to the airport. Also, just make sure you are aware of your surroundings and who calls you. Everyone here looks lost. So good luck to all who comes here...

Disembarking from the boat and walking up the dock, it's apparent that you're going to have a good stay. As mentioned in the other review: If you've arranged an overpriced shuttle, your hotel will be there waiting for you. If not, just walk up the dock... there will be no less than 10 trikes with drivers waiting for you. To add to the relaxation, all the trikes are electric on the island. No noise. No pollution. Perfect. Boracay itself isn't the largest island. When catching a trike here, it'll take you 20 minutes tops to make it to your hotel unless you go all the way to the north side of the island(Where the gross rich people vacation; I said what I said). I'll get into that in another review but it's bizarre to venture to the north side of the island, pay 400+/night, and be sooooooo far away from literally everything on the island. On the return trip, you'll also go through this jetty port. You'll pay for the boat ticket and we were able to pay for a trike driver in advance(they give you a sticker to give to any trike driver) to take us back to the airport once leaving the boat.

Then people put free souvenir necklaces made with wooden beads and ribbons around your neck. What a greeting! Next we saw a money changer and that was perfect. I checked the rates and they were off by one peso. What value! That was enough to get some pesos for both the shuttle ride into town and to buy souvenirs on the beach along with some drinks and food. Get to the street and there's a company offering you a shuttle ride for 150 pesos round trip. Take that ride my friends, because it's a steal. You may be tempted to walk to the beach, but it's a longer walk than you'd expect it, you'll be exposed to mosquitoes and some of the seedier characters hanging out in town, and if you only have six hours in town like we did before the cruise ship leaves, you'll appreciate not wasting an hour walking to the beach. Please don't pay your cruise company for a beach transfer. You'll pay $70 for that transfer when you can pay 150 pesos (less than $3 USD). And if you want a more personal ride than a shuttle, get a ride from a trike which I imagine is just as cheap. On the way back you will again see a band waiting to see you off to your cruise ship. Thank you Boracay for being so welcoming. Every time I come to this town, I am convinced more and more that this is one of the most wonderful tourist places to visit in the world.
