I've dined her quite a few times so knew what to expect - a good selection of steaks and tasty starters. And after last year's cocktail making masterclass, my first request was a passion fruit sling. The bar girl whipped it up really quickly and clearly with lots of skill, and served up one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time - and it was topped with half a passion fruit. And only £6.50 which I think is a good price for a cocktail in the city centre. We had arrived early for drinks in the bar before our dinner booking and got a booth. I really like the bar area, I think it's generous size and comfy booths would make a good cocktail stop whether or not you were dining there. Right on time, a waitress came to collect us for our table and took our coats so all we had to carry were our drinks which I thought was a nice touch. The dining area in the GOTC is really beautiful - lots of glitz and glamour with the leather seats, chandeliers and the fairy lights in the window. Our table was an oval shaped booth tucked away in a corner as our booking was for 8 people but there was only 6 of us. This was probably my only criticism of the evening - the way the booth was shaped made conversation difficult (and with the background noise) so you could only really talk to the people immediately next to you. If there had of been 8 of us I think it would have been a lot worse! I started with cheddar and spring onion croquettes. Three croquettes with a portion of salad, these were lovely and crisp. I think the filling needs a bit more of a punch to it as the flavours are a bit mild but I think that's how they're meant to be. I'd definitely get them again though as I am croquette-obsessed. Because we were getting 50% off, I decided to go for the fillet steak on the "Best of British menu" - this is a changing menu where they feature a few cuts at a premium price. I can't remember which beef was featured on that menu but it was around £34 for a fillet steak of 220g. I opted for blue cheese sauce and chips with mine. The steak was a little pale on the outside - I like a nice sear on it but not enough to complain about. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and I had no trouble devouring the whole thing! The sauce was lovely and rich and a really good sized jug so I didn't run out. The chips are consistently good - rough cut with the skin still on and lovely and crispy. I had a lemon sorbet to finish. I remember last time I ordered this it had a slightly strange taste but there wasn't anything of the sort this time. The bill came to around £35 each - that was for a cocktail, 3 course meal and soft drinks. Seriously good value and a fantastic night out. Moving into February they're doing a lobster deal so I think I'll be tempted back sooner rather than later!

Today I was at a hotel in walking distance and got a reservation impromptu for lunch and walked right over. The decor is a little old but probably intentional. The carpet in the chairs are all various tartan patterns, with the gentleman and lady staff in tarta suits or kilts. All the staff were very friendly and professional, working as a team to provide the courses and refills. The menu has a selection of five or so each of appetizers, main dishes, desserts and sides. Since it was a weekday lunch, I took advantage of the three-course special for around 39 UK pounds. My three courses are attached, the first being a delicious duck confit over black pudding with microgreens and Curry. Next up was a delicious sea bream (server advised me it was similar to sea bass) over put a nut squash with toasted coconut slivers. Last but not least, was a wonderful apple berry crumble with ludicrously creamy vanilla ice cream. Honestly, I should not have ordered all of this but it was a wonderful meal. The pigeon reminded me of liver because it was was tender, chewy, and gamy. The only difference was the texture because liver is more grainy. I loved the combination of the slightly sweet cherry sauce and crunchy peanuts. As for the entree, we chose lamb stuffed with haggis. It was extremely succulent and out of this world. I appreciated that none of these dishes came with bread. Don't get me wrong, bread is amazing but I felt so bloated because sandwiches are everywhere. It was refreshing to have an Atkins diet sort of meal. Also the two generous glasses of wine definitely tied things together. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end because the dessert was anticlimactic. We ordered a cheese dish and vanilla ice cream. The cheese dish came with two cheese wedges, grapes, assorted crackers, and jam. I was not blown away. Also, since the ice cream was icy and not creamy, it reminded me of the $1 McDonald cones...which I love but was expecting more. If you are a real steak lover, probably go for their prime rib. I like my steak a little less fatty. Their cheesy cauliflower was rich and tasty and their tomato salad was just whatever, but it was good tomatoes. This was still one of my better meals here in Scotland.

It really was jaw-droppingly good. Everything was perfectly cooked and the quality of the ingredients made this a meal to remember. We ordered a grand sharing platter of desserts from the a la Carte menu and were delighted to tuck in to all 4 full size desserts from the menu- Nutella cheese cake, sherry trifle, sticky toffee pudding and 3 ice creams from a selection (we went with Mint choc chip, vanilla and Dime bar).
