Unlike the standard interior of the traditional greasy spoon - wipe clean tables, a two-day old copy of the Daily Star - this place has gone for a smart and modern approach, with leather seating and clean, white walls giving the place an airy feel. It does a really good cup of coffee and also has WiFi, which, for Strichley, is a major step forward, and not something you're likely to find in a more traditional cafe. The food is also a bit more upmarket (not that there's anything wrong with a bacon sandwich, or a fry up) and there are some interesting combinations on offer. Well worth a visit.

With meal deals starting at around two pounds only the completely skint will go hungry. Every time I've been in the service has been friendly. Whether it's an early hangover cure, or to just get away from the usual fare that Selly Oak boasts, Woodstock is a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of the Bristol Road.

It's a similar set up to Subway where you tell them exactly what salad items you want on your baguette and then choose a filling from the menu board. The end result is a delicious baguette that will keep you going all day because the staff are so generous with their fillings. The choices range from the standard ham right up to more unusual Mediterranean fillings, everything I've tried here has been delicious apart from one baguette I had which had loads of black olives in there. Now, I hate olives so the fact that I didn't like this was not the cafes fault in the slightest - more me being a numpty and ordering a food I loathe! In the winter the jacket potatoes are excellent comfort food and again they come with a range of fillings from cheese to ratatouille so there is something to suit everyone. The staff in Woodstock are lovely and will chat as they are preparing your food, I always get the impression that they are really interesting in what I'm saying rather than just talking for the sake of it. The atmosphere in Woodstock is very chilled out and comfortable, sometimes I'll go in with a magazine and sit reading that for an hour without being disturbed - apart from when I want another delicious fresh coffee that is! The customers are mainly students as the university is two minutes up the road, I've eaten in cafes surrounding Northampton uni and found the students obnoxious and loud but this is definitely not the case in Woodstock and this seems to be the place for people to sit and relax rather than be shouting and screaming. Next time you're in Selly Oak I'd definitely recommend a visit to Woodstock for a spot of lunch, the food is fantastic and it won't break even the most credit crunch affected bank!

So you can imagine how stressed I was. Yet when I went to Mandy's, I was reassured that a freshly baked cake to my specified design could be made within a few hours. I didn't want to go for a simple cake with a name on it. I asked if some characters could be designed on it from the birthday girl's favourite cartoon. And they were able to accommodate this with such short notice! The cake itself was divine! It was a fresh cream sponge cake with an amazing cream and fruit filling. Luckily I ordered a large size because all the guests were eager for seconds! The prices were very reasonable too so all round I was very impressed!

Cheep and Cheerful it is. £4.00 for two good size baguettes, Cheese & Onion and Mexican Tuna (a new for me). I had to chuckle that the lady at the counter felt she had to warn me about the Cheese & Onion sandwich containing salad. The baguettes were filled to the brim. Nothing special in their quality and ingredients, but filled that hole and great value for money. There was a wide choice of filling available in baguette and pannini - Although the prices of the paninis were probably more than double the baguette prices. They also offered an array of Spuds and Soups and even a breakfast tray. Along with your favorite filled goods there's shelves of pop and chocolate bars to choose from.

The salad consists of mixed leaves, feta cheese, blueberries, carrots, beatroot, seeds and a few other treats. It also comes with a small pot of balsamic vinegar and oil which you can drizzle over. The salad itself is £4 which is pretty standard in comparision to a subway salad but this is much more tasty and far better for you. Also look out for the wasabi peas and omega 3 salad boxes...
