The people who work here are helpful, compassionate, and skilled. The ER is too crowded but that is not the fault of the hospital, but rather the medical system. Even the office people are considerate. My experience in oncology was with the kindest nurses ever. read more

Uhh.. so many things to say...so little time. The angels that are there should most definitely get a pay raise and the other ones who do not care about their clients...they need to go. I feel like more room for more empathic nurses and doctors instead of dismissing your clients. They love taking blood too, they keep asking for it..? Kinda half listen to your concerns. I was incredibly insulted and treated horribly bc some nurse made an incorrect assumption about me. I was scheduled early so I show up at 7am, and I literally woke up at 630. The first nurse I had, told everyone (those 'privacy' sheets are by no means soundproof) that I was clearly on drugs and I needed to take a drug screen and they were moving my procedures to 2pm. They poked me several times trying to find a vein to inject fluids since I wasn't allowed any drinks and finally, hours later, I was able to urinate. Nothing else was said about it so clearly they saw that I wasn't a liar OR an addict. CMC already has a TERRIBLE reputation in Tompkins County and employees like this judgemental, rude, dismissive and completely lacking in empathy and compassion (which, as a nurse, should be evident upon meeting) are just giving more reasons for such a dreadful reputation. Everyone in my family, ever since I can remember, would go to Sayre; NEVER EVER Tompkins County Hospital. Now I understand why. I wish I had gotten the nurse's name but I was already very anxious about my procedures and literally just waking up, and honestly I was in shock that a NURSE would be so unprofessional. She had dyed red hair, between 30-45 years old, my arrival time was about 715am if that helps pare down the list of nurse's. My intention is not for this woman to lose her job bc I don't want ANYONE to lose their livelihood (especially in this economy) but in my perfect scenario I would like her to go through serious sensitivity training (just the fact she repeated her suspicions within ear shot of myself and my partner should never ever happen again----if a nurse has concerns she should know enough and honestly be decent and at least concerned about HIPPA and privacy of each patient. But I would hope that the concern for the patient and just plain acting in a responsible and empathetic manner would be the bare minimum of patient treatment). She was openly hostile to me, to the point my husband had to tell her that she was being incredibly rude, and making assumptions that were 100% incorrect and instead of apologizing, explaining herself or trying to de-escalate in any way she got louder and basically told my partner off. He was so upset and didn't trust himself to stay calm and in fact, he was farrrrrrrr more professional than she could ever even conceive of being. I would also like her to have training in the proper way to treat patients; regardless of whether they live a lifestyle that they personally don't approve of and also training on different factors and examples of addicts and how difficult drugs generally change your physical appearance. I was accused of using stimulants----I am 180ish lbs, 45 years old with a job and no criminal record. As a matter of fact, my family is extremely well known in this County. MY grandfather was James Herson Sr who was the chief of police for IPD for 25 years. He was a beloved and admired by both democrats and republicans; people literally cried when he retired. He was also the 1st chief and integral to the creation of CUPD. My uncle was an officer with IPD for 20 years, my father has been a chef at some of the best restaurants in town and my cousin Christopher is well loved and just an example of what a good person is like. So that's where I am coming from. I have a feeling that nothing will come from this. Perhaps it will get a laugh from the employees who are secure enough and know that it doesn't matter how patients are treated since we live in a medical desert. If anything, I hope HR takes a long look at who they are trusting to represent their hospital and at the very least does so.e mandatory training regarding patient care, sensitivity and tell them those little privacy curtains do not block sound. I heard every rude, assumption and incorrect thing she said. Being in a hospital is already anxiety producing. You should have nurses who understand and are nurturing. This is only a commentary on the Centralus Health's completely bungled, inhumane, anxiety inducing, thoughtless transition to My Chart from the patient portal. I am not sure who advised them on the rollout and transition to My Chart and thought that it would be okay to leave patients with no ability to access their doctors or their medical records for 5 days and counting. These transitions have have been done 100s of times this one was an epic failure. There was no extra staffing advised or put into place to answer the tsunami of phone calls, no tech support available, nothing but a busy signal, over and over again. For Centralus Health to expect that I am going to click on link in a voice mail message or email message from an entity that I have never had contact with is truely inane. So Centralus Health thinks that I should break the number 1 recommended safety behavior on line and click on a link and supply lots of personal information to someone I've never heard of ??????? Watch out for the sales people for these systems they will clearly deceive you and leave your customers, patients, those you serve, who pay you very distressed and much less convinced of your abilities and dedication to your mission. read more

The people are great and my primary care and urology folks all top notch however the whole show is a for profit circus. I called three days ago with acute diverticulitis and they finally called me back to schedule a sick day appointment! Really! I tried four times to connect by phone to no avail (another way they maximize profits) and so went through the patient portal (dont go there!). In the end, as always, a trip to the ER was required. It occurs to me in the months since my visit, I've received a dozen notices about my surprise bills, threats to send me to Collections, phone calls to my home...and yet not a single follow up from the doctor's office asking me how I'm doing, or how my anxiety is. I had elective surgery done on my left hand. From the minute I arrived at Cayuga Medical Center until I was discharged and in my car: the care, respect And my dignity were top notch!! Very professional and compassionate from the Covid-19 screening staff,admissions,volunteers ,hospital aides, nurses, Tom, Casine, Nichole and my sweet Anesthesiologist and Dr. Water's !!! When you go into a hospital and you feel like you are the only patient there being cared for, knowing that you are not ! Says a lot for the communication and how the staff works as a team. Their billing office is criminally incompetent. They inappropriately filed my son's insurance claims, costing our family hundreds of dollars. They consistently "lost" my payments (it's unclear to me how this is even possible!) and then sent a 17 dollar bill to a debt collector, even though I paid multiple times. When I've tried to speak to someone on the phone, staff are rude, brusque and extremely unprofessional. read more

It's been several months since I was involuntarily hospitalized at the emergency room at the Cayuga Medical Center on September 18, 2020. It was the worst experience that I ever had because the ER doctors were racist and didn't want to learn my name. The only reason that I didn't end up in the adult psychiatric ward was because a Black woman doctor happily talked to me about my situation that ended me up in the ER in the first place and was compassionate about it. I'm sick of the incompetence of the Cayuga Medical Center, especially when it comes to the ER doctors and nurses, plus those who work in the psychiatric ward. read more

Nothing has changed since a year ago. had it not been for my excellent NP, I would have never returned. DO NOT try to contact them via phone during their business hours. You will be put on indefinite hold, interrupted with "the you for holding, a staff member will you as soon as possible". 15 minutes of waiting. I could have something useful with my life during all that wasted time. I mentioned it to them before, that if you are dealing with shortage of people answering customers' calls then they DEFINITELY should look into hiring more staff. My husband died in the hospital as dr.kylee Taylor who was the provider did not attend to him despite repeated requests .He also did not refer him to a specialist and was very callous.There was no followup and whenever I asked his assistant where is the doctor he said he is outsidebut never came until the last moment when my husband heart stopped beating. I am a visitor from India who came to US to meet my daughter and her infant babies.I landed in US on 17th July and reached ithaca at night .My husband Sudip was going out in his regular evening walks and on 24 July 2024 I noticed him breathing heavily so st 10pm we took him to the emergency .I had purchased a travel insurance and the emergency response was quick .My husband was put on 3.5 litres of oxygen and as he was recovering he put him on observation in room no.415.He was having oxygen level of 94 .They then shifted us to room no 522.They said as his chest tray was having white patches they suspected pneumonia but didn't know whether it was bacterial or viral and we got to test for TB.as we came from India .Both the sputum tests were proved negative later but due to this isolation the nurses were not coming frequently and his condition worsened due to falling oxygen andthe doctor tyler kelly never visited him despite repeated requsts.My husband was left to die and though i had given the inj name which my husband had been admistered when he had similar pneumonia in india 2 years ago they didnt administer but instead treated him for bacterial pneumonia giving azitheromycin. It was only when the oxygen level dropped to 66 he was rushed to Icu but his heart has stopped beating .No care was given by the providor and he died on 26th morning. DEC 31, 2018 - RACIST ORGANIZATION! It seems like every two/three years I have to contend with this place on my wife's behalf. Why? Her last name is "Tang" (you know, like the drink we took to Skylab) but they think apparently think that "Teng" is close enough. So now I then have to go through this whole process of calling/emailing/etc to clear up and explain AGAIN that her name is not TENG -- and hence my personal opinion that they are a racist organization. I highly doubt that they would send a collection agency on me for a bill for a "Jeff Flewers". But even if you can excuse this as a clerical error this has happened not once, not twice, but three times now...(I actually think this is the forth time) It seems like they have significant organizational issues. Did I mention we live on the other side of the USA as well? I am genuinely concerned that if they can't do this correctly, what else are they messing up. I would avoid this place. PS - My wife asked that I also add the fact that the middle names are completely different. PPS - I went through my records - this organization has dropped the ball back in 2012, 2015, 2016... PPPS - I have called/emailed and written certified letters - nothing seems to work (sure I get a 'oops' and then a reset...). So I'm going to see if this organization will address this issue here, on Yelp in the bright/clear sunshine. Hoping that they do so that everyone can better understand this place. To the surgical team, we send our gratitude for the kindness to and care for our son -- the nursing staff in ambulatory care, the Anesthesiologist Dr. Patane, the wonderful surgeon Dr. Donohue who explained the procedure and sat with our son in the most unhurried, caring manner and then with Mom after the procedure which went late into the night, the unbelievable Stacey in ambulatory care who moved mountains to get a room at the hospital along with Dr. Donohue and the patient Mark who nursed our son post-surgery. Thank you too to the ER doctor who explained the dangers of painkillers. Once admitted, the nursing staff was amazing -- Danielle, Nichole, Meng, Summer, other Aides, the PT specialists and the caring nurses who helped us get to the car. I decided today I will not participate in using the Portal belonging to Cayuga Med. I received three emails today telling me I have messages pertaining to appointments. As usual I can not get into the portal when I log on. Instead of going through the usual procedure of having to call the hospital and have them assign me yet a new password so I can reset my old one I have decided I will no longer participate in using it at all. If they need to reach me they can call me, email or text. This nonsense has been going on since they first set this thing up. Many other people I know have the same problem. The office that we need to call to get in say they have no control of it and get swamped with callers needing their assistance daily. This is not the case with my physicians portal which is easy and seamless to use. So good by Cayuga Med and your stupid portal! read more

The wait times are ridiculous and their covid policies make no sense. I was told I must wait in my car while my family member waited for covid test results to he seen for vomitting. Then they put her back in the regular waiting room to wait to be given a covid test and to wait for the results for almost 2 hours. When I asked why they told me it was because I was in contact with her so I could be contagious. She had symptoms and she was ok to be there but I had to leave??? They then deleted my review twice from their site before my daughter was even seen. read more

I literally have Covid-19, coughing up blood, with heavy respiratory symptoms. I have been here 2 hours in the waiting room. I had my screening a few minutes ago. And when I asked when I'll go back into a room the intake women said, "it's not based on the time you got here-it's based on how sick you are". To them I might not seem "that bad" after have a few rough coughing fits and coughing up blood literally right in front of their eyes Isn't clearly serious enough. My experiences as a local person have been mixed, but CMC is as bad or worse than any in slow, incomprehensible billing. I am still getting bills from a single MRI visit four months ago: at least five separate bills one for every desk that said hello and I still haven't seen the Dr. to talk about the results. Slow bills can be partly the result of going through insurance but also the cost is quite astounding. If I had been told a 10-minute/1 knee MRI was going to be billed at over $3,000 I would have gone somewhere else. But they never talk about cost up front, just do the work and the bills keep on coming. read more

So I'm sitting here writing the review. My daughter is in pain and they have to transfer to another hospital. No update whatsoever! I'm still here waiting. I got mad and ask for the nurse to come. This nurse comes and he raised his voice to me! Is this what you call professionalism??? An update will be nice!!! No customer service at all!!! I dislike so bad this hospital unfortunately this is the only hospital here. I told the nurse that I will put a complain and I will! The hospital is dirty, the wall has shoes. Are you kidding???? If you can, avoid this hospital. YELP! DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU CAN HELP IT: We came in needing stitches for an open wound almost 2 hours ago and we are STILL waiting in the lobby room. I understand that the ER will prioritize patients; however, shifting bleeding patients back on the waitlist can only be done so many times. Being a hospital that is a good distance out of town, serving a much smaller Ithacan population now that the college students have left... I find this inexcusable. Nurses are coming in and out with new coffees and I received better and more efficient service when living in Los Angeles! I will make sure to report this beyond Yelp. I do have one pro: the waiting room is clean. I guess that's where most of the effort goes towards when it comes to the ER branch since the same patients are still waiting on this 'terribly' busy Thursday evening. I apologize and do not like making generalizations but everything about this experience with Cayuga Medical Center is awful. -------------------- UPDATE: We are nearing 3 HOURS and we are STILL WAITING. I went to the registration desk to ask where we were on the wait list and all I got is that we have not been assigned a room yet and blaming on a "busy night", no time estimate, plus a side of 'tude. I opened a huge cut on my foot after I slipped in the creek at Fillmore Glenn State park. On our way out we asked some people where the best place to go get it fixed up would be and they all said it was worth the drive to head down to Ithaca and get it fixed up there. The ER staff was great, got me checked right in, and the rest of the experience was equally as helpful. Several different people came in to work on my foot, I got x-rays, they cleaned the wound out, gave me a tetanus shot, stitched it all up, bandaged it up, and were very helpful with what I needed to do after I left. They were great with the kids who wanted to watch it get stitched up too, let them be in there when they were working on me, and were explaining what they were doing every step along the way. The entire visit lasted only an hour and a half I believe which was great. Great place. read more

I'm writing specifically about the Ambulatory Procedure Unit, which performs same day surgeries. I went in yesterday for minor hand surgery,and everyone, from the volunteer who greeted me at admission, to the nurse who wheeled me out, were compassionate, caring, attentive, patient, and professional. I have never undergone any type of surgery before, so I was very nervous. As soon as I checked into the APU, a volunteer emerged and explained the timeline of events, which was very helpful. The nursing staff were patient and kind, and explained everything they were doing every step of the way. Everyone from the surgical team came in one by one to introduce themselves and to explain various aspects of the procedure. By the time they were done with all the pre-op stuff, all my questions had been answered and my mind was at ease. Afterwards, they brought me crackers and water as soon as I was ready to eat something, and when I rang my callbell to use the restroom, a nurse came over immediately to help. Everyone's demeanor was polite, professional, and calm. I never felt uncomfortable or ill-at-ease (which I was afraid, especially since I've never done this before). All-in-all, I had as good experience as one can have, having your hand sliced into. My team included Lisa, the aide; Tricia, the pre-op RN; Vicky, OR RN; Christian, the PA from Dr. Dugan's office, and Dr. Dugan, orthopedic surgeon; and Dr. Burt, anesthesiologist. read more

Ex: Hi I'm inquiring about the sanitation of your ER bathrooms, just doing some research. Ex: Hi I was wondering if your nurses could spell __________(then you spell it for them). Is that correct? Ex. Hi, May I please speak with a nurse? (transfer) Do you know the difference between depression, bipolar, diabetes, and schizophrenia? Ex: Pop quiz- When someone rushes to the ER, emotionally distraught over one's loved one do you... a) inform them of the status of said loved one? b) show them to said love one? c) none of the above? d) begin asking them for the patient's phone number and social security number? Ex: Pop quiz- How long does it take to see a doctor or cardiologist when you have an emergency cardiac event? a) 1 hour b) 12 hours c) 24 hours d) never If you have a chronic or serious illness, I would strongly advise against moving to Ithaca/Mythica. You will likely not get the care you need or it will be unduly difficult to get it. read more

Doctor gives me referral on May 29th on June 10th I call to find out referral was never sent .When I asked why was told the Dr didn't have to sign the referral till he wanted to .Nice way to let you know they care ! Don't let them stuff you on the cracks , if you have to go there and you have a problem take it right to Jackie Barr inpatient relations .to be fair the imaging department is at the top of their game the rest of the facility could learn from their business practices . Ask questions ,if you don't like the answer ask someone else more qualified to answer don't accept excuses from the staff most aren't qualified to give an answer but they feel since they work there they know the answer regardless of experience or training . This is the third issue I've had with Cayuga Med in 4 yrs . The health care I've received here makes me sorry I moved from Staten Island ! read more

my fiancé and I went down here because she was experiencing pain in her kidney area and having numbness in her fingers and knees. Of course since we are in COVID times and everything is COVID no matter what The problem is. They stuck her into an isolated room where COVID symptomatic people are put into WHEN SHE HAD NO COVID SYMPTOMS WHATSOEVER AND HAD A NEGATIVE COVID TEST a few days before this. This hospital disregarded her and made her feel like she didn't know anything and could've compromised her health. They stuck her into this isolation room where there were people sicker than hell in there. So she got up and said we are leaving to which I am still sitting in the waiting room outside this "isolation room". We then go over to the front counter where we checked in and this nurse who I couldn't catch her name otherwise I'd put it here basically told her that "This is protocol and that we don't believe negative test results". Apparently, there are health rumors that COVID could mess organs up. So we decided it was best to leave and to consult her primary doctor. They would not even allow us to wait outside in our own vehicle or outside the hospital doors until we were called. I would not trust this hospital with any form of problem health wise whatsoever. You will will have staff there treat you like how my fiancé was treated, who BY THE WAY WORKS IN THE MEDICAL FIELD HERSELF! She felt like this place compromised her health by what they did to her and making her not feel safe. Always follow your instinct and not the instincts of someone who thinks they know more than you. You are the judge of your body, not this place. Stay clear of Cayuga Medical if you have any serious health problems. read more
