Let's face it, Channel 2 hasn't been THE Ten O'Clock News for a while now, but then again, save for Chicago Tonight, television journalism in Chicago isn't as rigorous as it was in the Jacobson/Kurtis days. Nonetheless, there are several reasons why you should tune into CBS 2 news every now and then: Number One is investigative reporter Pam Zekman, a munchkin of an elderly woman with thinning hair who has been at Channel 2 since color came to television. The sharpness of Pam's coordinated wardrobe is trumped only by the incisiveness of her reporting: she once simulated falling hardware from the 'L' structure by dropping a huge nail on a cantaloupe from 20 feet up. Number Two: Channel 2's salacious teasers and vapid reporting look splendid in 1080p. The station has taken a cue from crime television and each of their promos spots lure viewers to find out what happens with crystal clear video and dramatic narration. While many of CBS 2's stories are ridiculous--I can't count the number of times I've seen Dorothy Tucker do stories that involve a trip to Walgreen's--you've got a front row seat and a crystal clear view of Chicago's latest scams and deals. Number Three: Walter Jacobson's back. Walter offers his Perspective on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and he has yet to re-master the teleprompter or offer any real insight into current events. At this point, Walter is more Andy Rooney than Mike Royko. Number Four: Kristyn Hartmann. What planet is this woman from? Where did she learn to speak English with those remarkably unique inflections. It's all very dramatic and she's at her best during the post-segment banter with Rob Johnson. With the recent departure of Anne State, there's only one strangely hyper-emotive female reporter. And this one is perfect. read more

Giving Thanks this Thanksgiving for seeing Brad Edwards anchoring tonight's 10 PM news. No disrespect to others, but have always been impressed with sincere pleasant delivery. So generous. As he spoke of Bob Wallace and others with such sincere respect, I believe Brad is on the same quality level as the all time best of any news person. I just watched a sad story of a woman in Ukrainian Village with a rooftop pool that gets too much tree seeds blowing in during the months of June. It also clogs up her AC. Does CBS really have to preempt the golf tournament twice for a half hour of coverage of the weather situation? I understand that there should be a warning -- the scroll at the bottom accomplishes that, or if it is really urgent, then a two-minute personal briefing would be sufficient. But do we really need to hear more than 15 minutes of analysis as if it is the Weather Channel? Do they really think this would somehow win viewers -- "oh, I'm going to watch CBS news from now on because because during the combined half hour they preempted the golf tournament I was so impressed by hearing about all kind of weather dynamics I couldn't care less about, so long as I'm warned to be careful?" OTA signal is being manipulated by CBS to prevent OTA users from seeing prime time shows. Really a lousy thing for them to do. Contrary to other reviewers, I like Brad Edwards! Yes ... he is a bit theatrical but so what!! I usually switch from channels 2 to 5 to 7, but end up back to channel 2. Brad Edwards continues to be an investigative reporter, and does more than merely read the teleprompter. Hopefully, Irika Sargent will relax and give Brad a chance. Otherwise, she may be the next one to leave, which would be a shame. read more

I'm not young -- 42 -- and originally from New York. I never watch Chicago TV news but I was looking in on a 95-year-old neighbor last week who was watching channel 2. I now understand why nobody under the age of 80 watches local news. It's obsolete and underestimates its audience. Sunday night at 6pm, when we turn on TV to CBS to view 60 Minutes and later, when we want to watch The Good Wife we find that the Football Game, in which we have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST, by being allowed to go beyond its alotted, CLEARLY ANNOUNCED time-slot, has obliterated in large part the two programs we want to see. It is outrageous that CBS feels it can decide who gets to see what, despite the fact that people are paying a provider a goodly monthly sum, presumably to provide access to programs as listed. In this technological age, CBS should devise a way in which those whoeac want to watch the football game AND those who want to watch other programs, ALL IN THEIR ENTIRETY, can do so. Been watchin Channel 2 News for a long time like Rob, Steve, Ryan and even the weekend crew. Nothing against Kate Sullivan but I believe Mai Martinez would be a better fit with Rob at 5 and 10. Also would like to know why the closed captioning at the bottom of the screen during the sports just paraphrases the sports report when your competition is showing closed captioning of other games around the league, I believe this would be a lot more informative. I like the Kurtis/Jacobsen team and feel they are not appreciated enough. read more
