Yes, this place is massive with vinyl, records, tapes, CDs, DVDs, gadgets etc you make it. I wasn't sure what I walked into but I found the RnB section for CDs. Called my parents to see if they wanted anything and I found myself sifting thru everything. I honestly had no idea what this was for the longest time. In all my commuting back and forth in the area I just assumed it was a thrift shop or community market. One day, while stuck in traffic in front of here I finally read the sign to see what it meant. Having just got a vinyl player for my birthday a few months back, I was happy to see a record store nearby. I guess I can address a few things I had seen in the other reviews. The review calling this an 'absolute catastrophe of a store,' have you ever been to any record store? I mean a true record store, not the corporate song shops, but an honest to goodness true blue record shop? They are meant to look like this. Coming from an area where they had the oldest record shop in the country to this, it is exactly the same. Record shops are set up to make you browse. Make you find a record you had no idea existed, and fall in love with it. I will admit that their arranging of the records is a bit strange, putting pop albums into the rock section baffled me. But once you get into a groove here, you will find yourself gravitating to a certain section before you know it. Those that were saying that the employees were lazy, are partially correct. I looked this place up before coming here to see the hours of operation, and wanted to be here close to opening so that I could continue my day and be on my way. However, I showed up shortly before they opened and waited a good ten to fifteen minutes to go inside. The hours on the door were the same as online, but the door was still locked. Maybe they aren't used to having customers that early, especially since they share the lot with a buffet. But, if you show up at a certain time, you will run into some of the best employees that know their stuff. This is how I found out that pop is mixed in with rock. But if you get the right employee they will show you where the truly new released albums are. I felt honored to be shown that and gladly look through what they had. For now, this has become my go to place for all things music. Every so often I want to just put a record on and listen and get lost in my thoughts. But, if records are not your thing, they got you covered on just about everything else. They offer CDs and DVDs/BluRays. Sometimes it is a lot cheaper than buying new, just come in here and grab a movie that someone has already watched and take it home. I can tell you that I will be returning on multiple occasions to continue to expand my record collection. read more

I've lived here in Hyattsville for quite a bit and never had gone into this shop. I remember always driving or going to the buffet next door and always seeing this store curious about what it was. Then, yesterday, I decided to go in and check it out and to my surprise it wasn't that bad ! There's an enormous selection of music generes to choose from, from R&B to Rap to Metal to Alternative, anything you want they have it and not to mention that the prices of most of the songs weren't even that bad, they were really cheap. There was a man at the front desk, I'm not sure if he was the store owner, but he was really nice, Although I wasn't able to find any of the albums I was looking for, the man helped me look for the sections where they could be and was patient with me. Overall, CDepot is a pretty good record shop. The only negative I'd have to say is that the organization isn't great. It's pretty cluttered in there and it's really hard to find what you're looking for. Other than that it's a pretty great shop. read more

Today, after selling and then purchasing two CDs, I received a call from the manager stating one of their employees saw me walk out the door with a handful of unpaid CDs. I responded that was utter nonsense, but they chose to believe their irresponsible employee. Not only was I unfairly targeted and will never go to this store again, but I really encourage people to think twice before doing any kind of business with them. Since I am on the quest for some vinyl, I decided to check out this spot since it's fairly close to my house. Let me say this, it's very chaotic and limited space to walk around. If you have a few minutes, hours, maybe even days, to did through the crates/boxes, you will find some gems. The price is fairly reasonable. You can find some for $1.99 or if it's someone popular, high end $30.00. I may come back if I have time and patience. I really wish they would take some time to have some sort of organization. read more

They have a lot of stock. Pretty much anything you can think of, but sometimes quantity is not quality. Getting around the store is awful. They have so many boxes everywhere and it is pretty overwhelming. Staff seem to know where everything is which is great! Worth the visit, best in its area. Not much competition. read more

I've been going to CD Depot since I was a grad student at Maryland in 98. It was always a mess, whether it was the CD days...or later, as vinyl made a resurgence...but that was the charm. They had stock, lots of it, so the effort was justified. No longer. Now, it's a nightmarish maze of packed boxes strewn through the aisles, while the shelves are virtuallyempty. That CDepot -- once a great CD store -- is in decline isn't surprising in this digital age. But so many of its wounds are self-inflicted. An ill-fated decision a couple of years ago to stock vinyl without creating any space for records resulted in a crowded, disorganized store. The CD racks are now blocked by big boxes of records with "Do Not Touch" signs taped on them. I once hoped this was a temporary situation. But, it's been a couple of years now that you have to bend over piles of boxes to reach the CD racks. The employees don't seem to get how lucky they are, in this day and age, to work in an actual record store. Every time I go to this store -- which is increasingly rarely -- employees are eating greasy, stinky meals at their stations -- in the stock area, at the cash register and even on piles of CD and LPs in the main part of the store. Doesn't matter what time of day -- most recently was a Saturday morning around 11 a.m. Time before that was a Tuesday around 4 p.m. Burgers, gyros, pizza, fries -- the place smells like a greasy spoon, and it doesn't even serve food. It's such an all-around unpleasant experience, I've decided it's just easier to go in search of used CDs on Amazon or Half.com, or to drive up to Baltimore's SoundGarden, where they still appear to make an effort. It's sad -- like I said, CDepot used to be a great CD store. Now it's awful. I don't know who owns this place, but he/she/they clearly don't care about how the store looks or smells. You know how there are books and blogs and magazines dedicated to organizing your life? I don't think the people at CDepot know about those. At all. When I first walked in the door, I had to check my bag which, which wasn't a problem. I then had to walk around for a few minutes to figure out what I was looking at. The interior is a lot bigger than I expected, with three racks of records and CDs going down the middle of the room and the walls covered floor to ceiling in old LPs. Some of the sections are ill-labeled and it took me a while to figure out that the rock section goes all the way around the walls of the store. The selection is nice, including used and new CDs. I found some old original Dismemberment Plan CDs (except for Emergency & I, which I was looking for) and some other used indie CDs scattered around. There was a strictly new releases section for rap and hip hop, but not one for any other genres. Then again, it could have been hidden away somewhere. I don't have a turntable at the moment so I wasn't really in the market for LPs but as far as I can tell they have a pretty expansive selection of used records. The records seem especially unorganized, despite two employees cataloging boxes and boxes of them. I did thumb through the 7"s and found some pretty good titles. They have a few cases of DVDs, which is nice because on the whole this is one of the cheaper records stores I've been to. Compared to other record stores in other cities this place isn't the greatest, but it is very good for College Park and I'm confident they would have what you're looking for (after some digging), so I give it four stars. Also, the few boxes full of $1.00 VHS sadly did not contain any Jerry Maguire tapes, and that is the real reason I gave this place four stars. read more

I really hate the new download web sites like iTunes or Amazon. First of all, the music files are compressed so that half of the sound is missing...maybe good enough for listening on your ear-pods, but certainly not what you want to play on your high-end sound systems. Worse, you don't really OWN the music, you are renting it. If you want to make a CD to give your a friend, forget it. And it's a bit of nostalgia for me. Millennials don't know what fun it was back in the day to go to a record store. Back when I was a teenager, I couldn't wait til I got my paycheck, and I'd head down to the local record store, and spend a few hours looking through the records. After making my pick, I head home to listen to the records, reading the jacket, following along on the lyrics inside, and really getting into the music. Now i relive my youth, by going to the CDepot when I have nothing to do and an afternoon to do it. A tremendous selection of used CDs, DVDs, and now they offer RECORDS--Vinyl!!! They offer used CDs/DVDs, as well as the latest releases. I am so glad they are around, and they are the best place to hang out and buy your CDs/DVDs and now vinyls too! read more

Stopped by on a recent weekend trip to MD from Philly. The place is located in a fairly nondescript part of town a bit off the beaten track.Right next to a bowling alley and a Chinese restaurant (my idea of a killer trifecta btw!.) The name CDepot might throw you off of this place if you think that CD's are all they have. It's more like CD/TONS OF VINYL/DVD-BluRay Depot. Okay, first impressions. Walking into the place you first notice how vast it is for a record store...Not like Amoeba Records in SF vast..But pretty good size for an east coast shop. Think of a standard sized Pep Boys retail footprint for reference. Then you realize that it's a bit of a hoarder's jumble in there. I'm gonna guess that these guys do not refuse ANY collections and are constantly buying stock. That's great news for us crate diggers..BUT..Okay let me back up here a minute... I've been buying records and CDs for well over 35 years. I've hit shops all over America and Europe. So I've gotten attuned to certain 'types' of record stores. On the one hand you get the meticulously neat and tidy overly curated record 'boutiques'. Those are the spots where the owners only stock the 'good stuff', They know exactly what it's all worth and they are deathly afraid of getting beat on a sale. So they are constantly checking Ebay, Goldmine, and Discogs and making sure their records are always within range of the 'going rate'. Those places are no fun. Those places suck all the joy out of finding a record you were looking for. Those places should go out of business. On the other end of the spectrum you've got the 'just throw it all out there' shops. These spots are a mixed bag. Sure you might find something really cool if you have about six hours of your life to spend climbing around dusty piles of crates thrown everywhere overstuffed with zillions of moldy Alan Sherman , Barry Manilow, Montovani and Frampton Comes Alive albums from every basement within a hundred mile radius. Then again you might leave empty handed and in need of a shower. That also sucks as bad as the vinyl collector snob places. Just in a different way. CDepot falls somewhere in between the two of those examples. They've got good stock and the prices are fair. But they also seem hell bent on finding and grading every record that might be worth something. As a result they are backlogged and overstocked with boxes and boxes and boxes (none of which are accessible to the customers because they aren't priced yet, mind you.) of records spilling out into the isles surrounding the CD shelves (of which there are also thousands.) The store layout gives the impression that at one time long ago there was at least an effort made to keep things organized by department/genre/format what have you. But the ceaseless accumulation of 'maybe junk, maybe good, haven't gotten to em' yet' boxes has engulfed the majority of the place, and the result is just a confusing unorganized mishmash. DVDs and Blu Rays line the walls, then they are also mixed in the CD rows, here's the horror section, oh wait there it is again all the way across the other side of the store!. Ugh. I give up! * just orders it on Amazon* The staff seems pleasant enough. Your standard 'High Fidelity'-esque ' over educated, under employed wise crackers. Not jerks, but maybe a bit weary of the fringe oddballs that tend to haunt these types of places daily. Y'know. Record store people. I found a few decent records. Three total. But if the place had some organization, I probably would've found WAY more. I think they should just stop buying collections for like a solid four months.Pick a sunny weekend Rent some outdoor canopies Move ALL those boxes clogging the isles out into the large parking lot out front and have a massive record fair blow-out. I have been coming here for almost 20 years, and I don't think the store has been in worse shape. The staff are great, mostly, however it's just a chaotic and unpleasant experience as a shopper. Piles of stuff are all over the place, hard to know where one section ends and another begins. Boxes of things on the floor everywhere, and several areas are just a complete mess...records without sleeves and vice versa. Also, there is no listening station, so more obscure stuff just seems to sit around longer and longer because people can't check it out. I strongly suggest that the owner go to other area record stores and see what they are doing and borrow some ideas. It is much better experience elsewhere. This place just hasn't made the transition to vinyl very well, and worried it may not survive with more and more, and better, competition online and offline. read more

This is the most disorganized store I've ever been into. The regular hourly employees are nice enough, but the owner is rude and has no clue how to run a store. I go to every record store in the DC area because I am a vinyl collector. I enjoy looking through bargain bins for $1-$2 gems, but I'm not afraid to spend big money on more rare records as well. As I was looking through the bargain bin, the owner comes up to me, snatches the records I had picked out from my hands, and barks at me, "These aren't priced. These aren't for sale." There are literally thousands of records in bins and boxes in this store and only about 1/4 of them are priced and for sale. How about instead of lurking waiting to snatch records out of confused customers' hands, you put your inventory away or price it so you can actually make some money to fix your air conditioning and pay your employees to organize your store? read more

Having been an assistant manager for the now-defunct Kemp Mill Music (a DC area record store chain) in College Park MD during the early 90's, I am a mark for a good 'record' store. CDepot popped up during the early 90's on Route 1 in a much smaller location - near the Bike Shop and College Park MD post office. They were direct competition for our store and we had reason to worry. I was happy to see that CDepot moved locations up the road into a much larger space during the late 90's while I was living in Wilmington NC. During that time, Kemp Mill filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. My thoughts: Excellent CD selection, reasonable prices for new and used CD's and LP's. Wall to wall music ....They also carry a large array of DVDs and games. CDepot still is one of the only places in Prince George's County MD that will actually give you cash for used DVDs and CD's. Granted, if you pop in on a Saturday to have your collection looked at, you may be in for a long wait. I would recommend visiting the store in the AM on a Saturday or during the week while the kids are in school. For the new vinyl snots / kids - LPs are very disorganized. It would take a full staff several weeks to organize all of the vinyl that they have incurred. If you are a serious crate digger, you might be up to the task. Be prepared to spend an entire day there - Saturday or Sundays are best. A couple of other random notes: I overheard a conversation between a clerk and a customer attempting to sell coins/currency. The owner of the store (not in much) is the only person that will buy currency that you are attempting to sell. Make sure you call in before making a trip. This applies to selling vinyl as well. The shop has one particular employee that evaluates vinyl from the public. Call before making the trip if that is your sole reason for visiting. Keep up the great work, CDepot! I have purchased music from CDepot multiple times over the years and have always had issues. The cds are unorganized and scattered about - often not in order or so random you give up looking. The place is akin to large flea market run by a hungover, unshaven uncle. The used cds are as expensive as new at most stores. Recently I have tried to sell some music and the buyer has twice been rude and "too busy" to look at them even though I called in advance to check. If you want to spend five hours in a store hunting for music this is the place. If you want to find what you are looking for and pay a decent price go elsewhere. read more

Used to go often with my son but, this weekend took a friend who wanted to get some older R&B CD's. The choices were quite expansive and reasonably priced. BUT, it was hot as hell in there. I agree with Jenni K. This place is very sketchy. In fact, I'd driven by it numerous times and never even noticed it. However, I think being sketchy is one of the requisites to being a record store. Yes, I said record store. This place carries vinyl. It is awesome. In addition, they carry CDs, DVDs, and Blue Ray discs. You can find some very random or obscure items here for really cheap. My friend found a rare Oasis 7-inch vinyl for $4, but had seen it online for $40. And, from what I can tell, they carry all styles of music, which rocks! Totally worth your time if you have the patience to sift through all of their stuff. read more

This is a great spot to search for music on cd or vinyl. The staff is very helpfull. Prices vary pretty wildly depending on supply and demand. Collectors frequent the place so you know you can still find that rare jewel. They play an eclectic mix of music all day. Fun place to spend a couple of hours. The only thing i really recommend buying here is the vinyl records. The have a lot of old and collectible records and they are priced ok. That being said, the used dvd's and blu ray's are overpriced. You are better off getting those off of ebay. Some of the dvd's are close to the price of the blu ray's, which doesn't make since because dvd's are old and dying technology. Everyone i know has a blu ray player. If you need vinyl record Cdepot is the place to go, but for used movies i would check out ebay. read more

Beware - you can lose hours of your day in here! There is such a wide variety of media in here that almost any need or interest you have can likely be satisfied with a visit to CDepot. I come here to get physical copies of old classics, new faves, and just poke around to see what I might want to add to my collection. Admittedly, I come here mostly for movies, but the music selection is vast, especially vinyl. They also have video games, audio accessories and equipment, so it can be a one-stop-shop in a lot of ways. The service was good from what I've experienced - they're helpful, but not overbearing. Great place to pick up reasonably priced vinyl. Especially great for browsing CDs and records. I called up and asked them to see if they had a particular CD and could hold it for me for a day - no problem. They were really helpful about it. It can be a little disorganized in ways, but hey, that's part of the browsing experience. You might find some good stuff you weren't really looking for. One of the most frustrating record stores I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot). TONS of unpriced records everywhere with big signs saying "don't touch," employees who look like they'd rather be anywhere else but there, some times there's not even music playing in the shop, horrible cheap plastic sealed sleeves on all the records, no listening stations, bad access to the expensive records -you have to literally climb over boxes to get to them, etc. Just too many bad things to list. The large "we buy coins" sign out front should give you a clue as to how much these guys love music. There are some good records in here and the prices aren't too bad but the rest of the experience just makes me want to never come back. read more

CDepot has always had the largest inventory of CDs in the area, but a few years ago they greatly expanded their vinyl (I think that they may have bought out another business, perhaps Orpheus in Arlington), and the store kind of went to shit. The ceiling near the entrance is leaking so bad that they've had tarps over the CDs in that part of store. Even after a few years, the aisles are completely crowded with boxes of vinyl, some organized, most not. It's so bad that it's difficult to look at CDs in the farthest parts of the bins because you have to lean over the boxes. I used to come here about once a month; now it's more like twice a year. The fact that record/CD shops practically don't exist anymore does NOT give the brave few that are still around the right to sit on their laurels and let the place go to pot, which is exactly what this place has done. What a shame, as CDepot used to be so much better! While the sheer volume of merchandise (despite the complete lack of organization) keeps me from giving it a measly single star, they're certainly and quickly moving in that direction now that they've chosen to turn what was once a great CD store specializing in nearly all musical genres into a nonsensical mishmash of DVDs, Blue Rays, CDs, games, and bunches and bunches of unorganized vinyl. The result is that they no longer have a comprehensive selection in any given medium. Take CDs for example: While they've managed to keep up with their Rap, R&B, and Jazz inventory, they seem to have plain quit adding any Rock, Folk, or World music selections in the past two or so years. I chose to hone in on this one area as it's one I don't see much written about in these reviews. The other problems are clearly laid out in review after review, and I concur with them all--dirty environment, employees eating right on top of the merchandise and often not even handling vinyl and other products properly, inability to reach the majority of CDs due to boxes and boxes of vinyl blocking the way, lack of employees' musical knowledge, mispriced items all over the store that create a massive headache at the cash register, unhelpful and downright rude employees, false promises of buying your merchandise when they honestly have no interest to do so, and completely ripping you off when they do, and so on and so forth. On a more touchy note, as much as I hate to falsely accuse anyone of racism or discrimination, I'm not the only one who has observed and is convinced that black customers receive much friendlier service than whites or others. What's with that? It may not be too late for this establishment to turn it around, but for crying out loud ... the common pattern of complaints here is so uniform and clear that the owners of CDepot would do themselves a huge favor and get on Yelp to read what the customers are saying! read more

I am fortunate to have came to the CDepot in College Park, Maryland at a time that the employees were able to help me with some questions that I had. There is a vast and varied selection of dvds and cds in this store at discounted prices. For instance, I purchased 2 cds that came out to $5.28. I can not believe the selection at this place. Absolutely everything under the sun can be found here. The only draw back is all of the clutter in the isles. The staff was courteous to me and I was able to sell a few CDs. It took about 30 minutes and I had to wait in the store but I spent the time checking out all the cool stuff that included hundreds of framed albums of every kind on the walls. I hate to give only 3 starts to CDepot. I've been coming to this place for 15 years to buy CDs, and they used to have everything imaginable. Now, as other reviewers have stated, they've cut back on their CDs and begun stocking DVDs, video games, and tons and tons of used vinyl. It's great if you're into vinyl or like budget horror or kung-fu movies (they seem to have a lot of those), but a bummer for the CD buyers. Last time I was here I couldn't find anything on my list of 5 or 6 items I wanted to buy. And I was looking for stuff like Paul Simon's "Graceland" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" - it's not like I was looking for a bootleg from a Shaggs concert. I ended up going to f.y.e. at Wheaton mall and finding everything I was looking for - how sad is that? Part of the problem is they have boxes of vinyl stacked up against the music counters so you can barely reach the CDs. It's just very crowded and difficult to browse. The good news is that they seem to finally be organizing their vinyl - I saw some of it stacked into some empty bins and labeled alphabetically. Some day it might be a decent place to go for records.
