Sadly in 2018 storefront sales of things like records are dying, and as a result places like this have way overpriced items. A Tori Amos 12" single that caught my eye was priced at $14, whereas it's available online for $1.99 plus $3 shipping. If this place was at all interesting or unique, or if the staff (the one woman present during my visit at least) didn't seem so unwelcoming and disinterested, it might make the difference.

All record stores share a common denominator: crates and cartons of records to browse, a select few sleeves usually line the walls along with some old show flyers/posters, the lone staff/owner behind the counter playing something interesting (in this case it was Beirut), they are always super knowledgeable of their inventory and will usually share an interesting tidbit about whatever it is you're asking for/about. I happened to be on my constant quest for The Adverts.... because I'd rather try to find it in person than just order it online. No dice. Then, being in DC, I had a sudden hankering (nostalgia) for Nation of Ulysses since all I could think about after I got off the Amtrak was, "So many things that I'm dying to show you.....you're my Miss Washington DC!!", a song I first heard two decades ago (yikes!). No dice again. Although there were a few other Nation of Ulysses 7" records to choose from. I did, however, find out that Ian has come in to the store. Nice. I was hundreds of miles from NJ but being in this shop made me feel close to home again. That, or I'm just more inclined to feel at home surrounded by records. Great little place that I'd recommend to anyone passing through as most of the locals of Dupont Circle seem to know what kind of gem this is already.

Moving into our first DC record store we have Red Onion Records. It is a small record store, so there is not a huge inventory. They do have a lot of rare and strange records, which are cool to look at. I also believe that they have a lot of regular turnover in records, so going back often is recommended. The pricing is also very good, and you can get a decent record without breaking the bank. They also have a lot of vinyl in the bargain area, but that's not sorted in the best way, so make sure you have some time to check it out. Their Jazz section is probably the best out of all the sections. They also have listening stations right by the front window.

I was so taking it back and overwhelmed with the feeling of nostalgia and just melancholy when I came into this place. The staff are super helpful and will help you find any vinyl album. If they do not have it in stock, they will order it for you. They are so honest that they literally will not charge you until the item comes because it may be less or more than they anticipated! Talk about great customer service, and transparency and pricing. They have albums from various countries and literally every genre you can think of. I was so excited to know that I could have that vinyl sound in pretty much any sound! Thank you to whoever had the idea to open this facility and help us embrace our inner childhood! Walking in the store made me remember how it felt to hear my parents turned on an album on Saturday morning, right before we cleaned the entire house! Or remember Christmas albums on vinyl. Again this store was a beautiful surprise and I would recommend walking in and supporting if you are in the area.

Not too crowded which I liked as it can get pretty tight since there's many books and many shelves. Service was fine although I didn't really talk to many people while there (was more preoccupied with finding the books and checking them out). I'd say this place has great value as the books i got (3) were charged a total of just under $5. I can see why the staff put up flyers stating to be mindful with how many books the customers get as they're priced pretty low, allowing you to collect a decent amount. I'll definitely be back to check this place out again :)

Want three aisles of kids books like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys? Go here. Need every book C.S. Lewis wrote? Stop by Second Story Books. After visiting nearby ZavaZone with our seven-year-old daughter, we stopped into Second Story for a few minutes, which easily turned into an hour. Every book is 50% off. We left with 15 books for just under $21. The books are well organized and maps help navigate visitors to each section, but know that the warehouse's narrow book aisles can get cramped. It adds to the appeal! There are even harder-to-find rooms with other items like posters for sale. They also sell CDs and DVDs. Staff are helpful. I lost my wallet and within an hour a staff member messaged me on Facebook letting me know they found it and it was safe at the checkout desk. If you have used books, Second Story Books buys them from people.
