Sadly in 2018 storefront sales of things like records are dying, and as a result places like this have way overpriced items. A Tori Amos 12" single that caught my eye was priced at $14, whereas it's available online for $1.99 plus $3 shipping. If this place was at all interesting or unique, or if the staff (the one woman present during my visit at least) didn't seem so unwelcoming and disinterested, it might make the difference.

All record stores share a common denominator: crates and cartons of records to browse, a select few sleeves usually line the walls along with some old show flyers/posters, the lone staff/owner behind the counter playing something interesting (in this case it was Beirut), they are always super knowledgeable of their inventory and will usually share an interesting tidbit about whatever it is you're asking for/about. I happened to be on my constant quest for The Adverts.... because I'd rather try to find it in person than just order it online. No dice. Then, being in DC, I had a sudden hankering (nostalgia) for Nation of Ulysses since all I could think about after I got off the Amtrak was, "So many things that I'm dying to show you.....you're my Miss Washington DC!!", a song I first heard two decades ago (yikes!). No dice again. Although there were a few other Nation of Ulysses 7" records to choose from. I did, however, find out that Ian has come in to the store. Nice. I was hundreds of miles from NJ but being in this shop made me feel close to home again. That, or I'm just more inclined to feel at home surrounded by records. Great little place that I'd recommend to anyone passing through as most of the locals of Dupont Circle seem to know what kind of gem this is already.

Moving into our first DC record store we have Red Onion Records. It is a small record store, so there is not a huge inventory. They do have a lot of rare and strange records, which are cool to look at. I also believe that they have a lot of regular turnover in records, so going back often is recommended. The pricing is also very good, and you can get a decent record without breaking the bank. They also have a lot of vinyl in the bargain area, but that's not sorted in the best way, so make sure you have some time to check it out. Their Jazz section is probably the best out of all the sections. They also have listening stations right by the front window.

Aside from being a wonderful person, Josh is a great reference for the vast universe of music in his store.

And the event was free! This reminded me of the Pennsylvania Ave. Tower Record Days in the early 90's, when all you had to do was show up and it was a party onsite. Damn, I miss the old DC. Anyways, I reserved a ticket on DICE, when I got there no one asked about a ticket, which was great. They were just happy people came! You could choose from a button, sticker, and some other promotional item. Of course they had the vinyl for sale, I did have a chance to check out their selection of records, appeared pretty diverse, however, I am not a collector of vinyl so, don't take my word for it. The staff, of two men were hospitable, showed me to the listening room, a large area in the back where people were sitting around having casual conversation. It was around 25 people or so. The sound system was good. I'd already heard the album that morning and in my unsolicited opinion my favorite tracks so far are No Reply and My Old Ways. I'm waiting on the remixes and collabs. Met some cool people. Didn't feel rushed. They looped it and played the album again for the late comers, which I appreciate. There was a drawing where two guests won a free album and some other promotional items. Byrdland does listening parties regularly, so get ready if you're a Florence & The Machine fan (event already posted). Byrdland has picked up on the much needed, meet- in- person over music tradition that we've all been missing. And I love it!

Disappointed with their small selection of CDs, I thought they would have much more. Still,…read moreextremely cool interior and tons of variety.
