I'm always surprised by the new stock that. The prices are also competitive. In my experience they at least match online prices and in many instances they beat them. In the DC area, Red Onion is still the best for collectors (the shop sells cheap records, too). Within the past year, I've seen original pressings of the Stooges (Fun House, no less, which is insanely rare), Minutemen (Double Nickels on the Dime, also quite rare), David Bowie, Metallica, Swans, Bill Evans, Curtis Mayfield, The Beastie Boys, The Cure, Townes Van Zandt, Ghostface Killah, Patti Smith, New Order, Big Black, Velvet Underground, Prince, Miles Davis, Mary Lou Williams...I could go on. Sometimes, my brain feels like exploding when I'm here. The shop has strong selections across rock, jazz, soul, hip hop, punk, and country, with a smattering of weirdo avant-garde/experimental/electronic stuff to boot. To keep myself from blowing an entire paycheck on vinyl, I limit visits to Red Onion to about once a month. On one trip not too long ago, I got a beautiful, exceptionally clean original pressing of Maggot Brain for $100. If that sounds like a lot, take a look at what the record commands on Discogs or eBay. Another local record store that shall remain nameless is charging $150 for a slightly warped copy. Josh never overcharges--although he easily could because he's picky and only buys very clean wax (often VG+ and better). It's a testament to Red Onion's extremely high quality that although I live within walking distance to two very good record shops, Joint Custody and Som, I schlep out to West Hyattsville more often than I hit those stores. read more

Sadly in 2018 storefront sales of things like records are dying, and as a result places like this have way overpriced items. A Tori Amos 12" single that caught my eye was priced at $14, whereas it's available online for $1.99 plus $3 shipping. If this place was at all interesting or unique, or if the staff (the one woman present during my visit at least) didn't seem so unwelcoming and disinterested, it might make the difference. read more

All record stores share a common denominator: crates and cartons of records to browse, a select few sleeves usually line the walls along with some old show flyers/posters, the lone staff/owner behind the counter playing something interesting (in this case it was Beirut), they are always super knowledgeable of their inventory and will usually share an interesting tidbit about whatever it is you're asking for/about. I happened to be on my constant quest for The Adverts.... because I'd rather try to find it in person than just order it online. No dice. Then, being in DC, I had a sudden hankering (nostalgia) for Nation of Ulysses since all I could think about after I got off the Amtrak was, "So many things that I'm dying to show you.....you're my Miss Washington DC!!", a song I first heard two decades ago (yikes!). No dice again. Although there were a few other Nation of Ulysses 7" records to choose from. I did, however, find out that Ian has come in to the store. Nice. I was hundreds of miles from NJ but being in this shop made me feel close to home again. That, or I'm just more inclined to feel at home surrounded by records. I almost don't want to write a review, because I don't want more people beating me to any great new albums. We didn't know Red Onion when it was in its DC location, as we lived out of state. But the new location is a block away from us and because of that, we kept putting it on the back burner to check out. "It's right there, we'll get to it." We finally got to the store last weekend and... woah. Most record stores' used selections become stale and consist of just about anything you can imaging being found in a Goodwill. Red Onion is not most record stores. I don't know if people with great taste just know to sell their records to them, or Josh is picky, but whatever it is, it's amazing. I've been to exactly zero record stores where you can find used Shins, Mogwai, Local Natives, etc. But Red Onion Records had them. On top of an amazing collection of new (again, stuff a lot of stores in the DMV wouldn't think to order) and used records, vintage stereo equipment, and even books, the store just FEELS like a neighborhood record store. Everyone's friendly, helpful, and accommodating. You'll want to make it a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly visit. read more

Moving into our first DC record store we have Red Onion Records. It is a small record store, so there is not a huge inventory. They do have a lot of rare and strange records, which are cool to look at. I also believe that they have a lot of regular turnover in records, so going back often is recommended. The pricing is also very good, and you can get a decent record without breaking the bank. They also have a lot of vinyl in the bargain area, but that's not sorted in the best way, so make sure you have some time to check it out. Their Jazz section is probably the best out of all the sections. They also have listening stations right by the front window. read more

A very nice and well curated shop that has a good mix of new and used vinyl. There are a couple of aspects of this shop that separate it from others in the neighborhood and around the country. For starters the shop is very well lit and it has a light and bright feel to it. For a small shop even a dozen or so customers didn't really crowd the place as there is room to move around. I imagine that this shop does well with a more mature customer or a selective shopper that understands the type of records they usually select. The second component was pricing. The prices on used vinyl were right in line, not trying to get mint value out of a good copy. The new vinyl pricing seemed in line if not a bit lower. The guy running the place was really engaging, seemed interested in what I was looking for and helpful in pointing out selections throughout the store. When I first visited Red Onion, I was in town on a business trip and staying at a nearby hotel. Because I would need to travel with my records, they carefully packaged my purchases in thin cardboard boxes that could comfortably lay flat in my suitcase, while being protected from any rough handling. That good customer service stuck out in my mind and now that I am a DC resident I make sure to steer some of my business their way. This store appears small - so small that one wonders how good the selection of music can be. But I have never gone here without buying at least a few items. However - potential music shoppers - please note that they specialize only in vinyl. There are no CDs or other media formats that I recall seeing there. Bottom line - the selection is decent, prices are reasonable, and the staff are very friendly. I will continue to shop here for my music needs. read more

True to its name, Red Onion makes me weep. Please, please support it. Firstly, you have to find this shop...It totally hides in the obvious! It reminds me of a Doctor Who episode where you could only see the one who hides from the corner of one's eye. The Discovery, the approach within, and the look around will feel so innocent, and intimate. The feathers inside are a bit ruffled. You will want to straighten things up just to see them better. It feels like that cozy "that 70's show" basement where you would want to lose yourself, spending serious time, high from the possibilities. I have been a frequent customer at Red Onion Records & Books, so much so, that the proprietor and his diligent staff greet me with a "Hello Sir, What a fine day it is today? Is it not?" every time. They then proceed to pour me a a cup of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea while one of the staff members assists me with my coat, takes my car keys and goes park my car. The owner then steps out from behind the counter and walks me to the very coveted used vinyl new arrivals section where he tells me about this weeks' new arrivals in a patient and soothing voice while he gently fingers through the selection so that I may avoid getting dust particles on my fingers (I am highly allergic). The proprietor also sometimes mentions recent arrivals that I may be interested in which he has been storing behind the counter for my eyes only. Many a time I have been wonderfully surprised by a rare out of print Throbbing Gristle (plastic camo bago included!) single, a first edition Factory Records production with unusual packaging, or a signed copy of John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things". After I have picked out my selections for the week, one of Red Onion's dedicated staff members will offer me to take a seat in a comfortable sofa chair while he or she shines my shoes and recites (by memory I might add) the liner notes from early Bob Dylan records, which, if you are a connoisseur you should know, were actually written by Mr. Dylan himself. After I am relaxed and refreshed, the owner will provide me with a total and bring me my check. I like to pay up front and also leave a little something for the staff, on occasion it's a few spare gold coins, on others I bring them the leftovers from my lunch at 1789. A wonderful experience all around, and I have visited some of the finest record stores this nation has to offer. This is of course... a joke. Red Onion Records is a great record store in Washington, DC that is family owned and operated. Unfortunately Yelp in itself, like most of the internet, has become a place where short-sighted self-indulgent entitled jerks feel the need to go out of their way to give useless negative non-constructive feedback. Have you ever had an experience so exquisitely awful in a store that when you walked out, you had to ask yourself: Did that just happen? It is really difficult to offend me - even if you tried your hardest, you probably couldn't do it. There are only two things that really get under my skin: calling me a liar, and dismissing me without even giving me the time of day. The dude at Red Onion Records managed to do both things to me in 30 seconds, which is actually quite impressive. I called ahead to Red Onion and made the trip from Suburbia specifically to go to this store. While walking down U Street, I saw another record store along the way that I didn't even know existed, so I walked in. They were playing hardcore angry guy tattoo music pretty loudly, so it wasn't surprising that they weren't in the market for the Sinatra and Brahms collection I came in with to try and sell. They were super cool about it though; business is business, no hard feelings. On to Red Onion. Upon walking in, I mentioned that I had been to another record store down the Street. Red Onion guy's response was "Then I don't even want to look at your stuff because they got all the good selections". Outside of that just being silly and illogical, because you never know what I have, what they might have taken (nothing as it turns out) and what they might have missed, his tone was so assholey I had to do a double take. Maybe he was having a bad day. I'm so polite, it always freaks me out a little when someone treats me crappy within a few seconds of meeting me. "Um, noooo ... they said they weren't in the market to buy anything classical and didn't buy any of my records at all". "I find that hard to believe". "Dude, I'm not lying to you." "Oh no no no, I believe you." Um, what? He then pretended to look at my records for 3.7 seconds, then leaned on the stack with his arm, turned to me and told me that we were done. I stood there in shock. As he left he said "But I do appreciate you coming in and showing me". Oh sure. You are just brimming with appreciation. I am one of the lucky DC residents who lives within two blocks of "Red Onion Records & Books." Even better, the store shares a building with my dry cleaner (reminder: I should yelp about that too) --- and I stop by there at least twice a week to check out its constantly rotating stock of records and books. The guy who works the counter is named josh, and he is always spinning interesting records as he works the shop. Even better than his eclectic taste for "in-store listening" music, is his terrific knowledge of the shop's inventory and stock. Even if he doesn't have a record in the store -- he will most likely know off the top of his head the last similar record he had in the shop and the probability he will have another soon. For those of you who like to patron independent and local stores --- please join with me in giving Red Onion Records & Books our business. These stores give our neighborhoods their character and charm, and if we don't support them now --- we can't complain in ten years when the only music for sale is re-issued Rascal Flats albums at WalMart. Red Onion provides me with the greatest experience in the world --- you know the one... you are digging through a pile of records and discover something that you never even knew existed --- and it is exactly what you have been looking for. Once you return home with your treasure, you put it on the turntable, turn off your cell phone, crack open a beer, and listed to both sides twice (a slice of heaven). For those hardcore vinyl collectors, Red Onion is worth a visit. The proprietor Josh worked for years at the very famous Princeton Record Exchange. Apparently he amassed a significant collection over the years and is slowly leaking them out to the public. The bottom line is that the vinyl selection can be of very high quality. Prices are reasonable given the quality. Josh appears to have a significant expertise at this subject and knows the market fairly well. He does not seem to be one to gouge or take advantage. So don't expect finds (from an economic standpoint), but you may be pleasantly surprised at the inventory. While small, I have found/seen some rare items. read more

Now, I'm a large proponent of "local/independent/homegrown." Large proponent. I'm even willing to pay a little more for it, walk a bit out of my way, etc. Large proponent. I think, though, that locality or independence or homegrowth needs to be viewed as a contribution to a rational framework, not as the entire picture. Red Onion is very charming, and there is a good amount of stock stuffed into that small little space. It's got a good vibe, and the music over the speakers is good, and people seem to have a lot of loyalty for it. I have to say, though, for all its charm, it seems far more like a pet project than a business that's interested in staying afloat. There's no consistent product offering beyond those that fall into some sort of miasmic "post-intelligentsia hipster" bucket. It's like people shop there to shop there, for whatever pin it adheres to their lapel, as opposed to shopping there to get the items they're looking for. It's a perfectly good record/book shop, but it probably doesn't deserve all this chestpuffing. If you're interested in finding something specific, rather than a trip back in time to your heady early-90s college radio station days and all the aimlessness they entailed, there are better options. Specialization is the hallmark of an advanced economy, and Red Onion would do well to specialize a bit. If I knew I could find the best ______ there, I'd probably be more likely to go. read more

I had no idea record stores existed in DC!!! I went to Red Onion in search of a birthday gift and was pleasantly surprised to find that this tiny store is well-stocked. I found all sorts of records, ranging from about $8 to $50, many of which I was tempted to buy for myself even though I don't own a record player. There is also a pretty random selection of books, all of which are sold for half the list price. The owner is from Long Island so we bonded right away! He's friendly and helpful. I love the little sitting area by the window, very relaxing. Oh and there is always good music playing! read more

It's a few blocks away from my apartment and the reviews were very positive so I decided to check it out for myself. Josh and his staff have made me feel right at home. Update: Kudos to Red Onion for having the 12" original 1983 pressing of New Order's Blue Monday. A classic. ======== Teeny tiny used record & book shop next to Lauriol Plaza. It's like a college DJ's basement bachelor pad, except tidy and well-lit. If you seek a particular title, you'll have better luck at Melody Records, Kramerbooks, or Books a Million. But if you enjoy serendipity, this is a terrific place to browse (and kill time while you await a table). By the window are soft reading chairs and a Welcome Back Kotter lunchbox (gotta love that). Book/CD collections are eclectic (examples: Bob Dylan, Be Your Own Pet, the Cure, the Shins, Nick Hornby, big photography and Impressionism books, Lonely Planet travel guides ...) The books I bought there were reasonably priced and in excellent condition. We recently got a record player, so my husband enjoyed browsing the large vinyl selection. So fun to check out vintage album covers! He was tempted by a New Order 12". I am so happy to have a used record store in the neighborhood. We'll be back. read more

Am I ever glad I wandered into Red Onion Records & Books, which has everything you could want in a record store: a friendly and knowledgeable owner, a clean bathroom (so you don't crap your pants when you make an unexpected find) and a fantastic selection of books and music at fair prices. Thus far I've made two trips and have not left empty handed. As previous reviewers have mentioned, what Red Onion lacks in quantity it more than makes up for with quality. It's a always a pleasure not to dig through rafts of Herb Alpert and George Benson vinyl that inhabit the jazz sections at most record stores. read more

Great selection of used and new records. I like that they have a couple of used records crates labeled 90s and 2000s. This is not something you find in your typical record store. So I was able to find a used version of the new Shellac album! I also purchased a few rockabilly, soul, and garage rock records from different eras. The used records are very fairly priced ($4-15 for the most part) and their $1 crates have some hidden gems in them. Josh is super nice and very knowledgeable about all kinds of music genres. He was very helpful and set up a listening station for me. If I lived in DC I would find myself shopping here quite often. The one negative things I have to say is that the records are not very well organized but it seems to be because I happened to come here only a few days after they started remodeling the store (work in progress). They definitely take advantage of what little space they have by filling it almost to the brim with decades worth of records. This place has a fairly good selection of newer material, but really hits the ballpark with their jazz and blues sections. I have yet to see a record store that carried such a diversity of that genre. Of course, their rock, country, classical genres are great as well, but the jazz/blues really stood out. You may spend a great deal of time looking for what you want, but its better than having nothing to sift through. read more

Stopped in this morning for the first time because I was visiting and wanted to see a local shop before I drove home. This is the first time I've been in Red Onion Records. The store is organized, has a good selection of records, the vinyl/covers were in pretty good condition, and the prices were fair. Best of all was I spoke to the owner while I was in the store. Nice guy and knowledgeable about music. This was a great experience all the way around. I don't get down to D.C. often but I know I will be coming back to Red Onion Records whenever I return. This record store is awesome. Very aesthetically appealing, clean and organized on the inside, and offers a huge variety of jazz records, old and new, as well as popular 80s music and modern punk. This place is in total hiding and appears at first glance to be an extension of the dry cleaning place it shares its first entrance with. despite all that, this place is a total find through and through. its like being invited to a new friend's house and peeping through their record and book collection while they're in the bathroom and discovering that you love a lot of the same stuff (if you and your friend are sort of indy). actually the place itself looks like the homey sort of basement where a collector could spend serious time reorganizing records. Fun Fun Fun limited hours though, which is kind of a bummer, but kind of great. i think its open til 7pm on weekdays and then friday to sunday til 8 or 9? warning: this is not the place to try and pawn off your 311 records!! read more

If there is a title for Best Vinyl Record Store in DC, I'd enthusiastically give it to Josh Harkavy's Red Onion. Red Onion is on of the more compelling success stories in DC. At one point not too long ago, Josh was considering other life options, but a year or so later, a new sign for the store, some renovations, and Red Onion and Josh seem to be thriving. Red Onion is for me, the only vinyl record store in DC. Crooked Beat may carry more front list. Others like CD Celler and CD Depot, may just have more used titles. But no store in the DC area curates their selection like Josh. As a NYC transplant--and a devotee to Other Music--it's wonderful to know someone will sell the new Qluster record or willing special order that random Type title. When I talk to friends about this city, about which I'm so ambivalent, Red Onion is one of the high points I discuss. read more

I had heard about Red Onion Records through Yelp. I always meant to go, but something else in DC always came up instead so I kept putting it off. While wandering around Dupont, I passed a sign with a little red onion on it... How could I deny fate, which was *clearly* leading me to Red Onion Records? I had to go in. I was immediately greeted upon entering. There's something about being greeted (especially at a record store) that makes me more inclined to buy something. It was pretty busy when I stopped by, but most people there seemed to be looking for something in particular (not just to browse) so it cleared out pretty quickly. I followed my standard route when hitting up a record store: browse the "Just In" bin, check out punk, maybe check out some Classic Rock, and if there's time, troll the dollar bins. For such a small store, they have really good selection! (At least for the genres that I'm interested in...) Nothing is really outrageously overpriced here, and if you look hard enough/get lucky, you can some really sweet deals! I found a record that I haven't seen for under $30 online for only $7 here. Too bad I'm not into reselling and it wasn't something I was into, or I'd totally have snagged it up! Long story short, pretty good record store. It's one of the better ones in the DMV that I've been to. The worker (owner?) was very nice and friendly. The store had good stock at pretty good prices, especially for its size and location. This place is a true gold mine! This is a MUST for any record collector. I'm an aggressive collector of records.. Whenever I'm out of town I try and go to a local record store. I've been from upstate New York, down to DC and VA. While this store is on the smaller side, it had one of the greatest selections I've seen. I found Beatles - Revolver for $8.50, Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced for $14.50, and Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon for $6.50. All were original prints (not the new releases on 180 gram vinyl which you can find anywhere). All were in mint condition. No warping, no scratches which skip. I was and still am utterly amazed I found each of these at such AMAZING prices. And all of this was in just a matter 15 quick minutes of perusing. I guarantee you cannot find anywhere that will beat these prices. I cannot wait to get back to DC and look around for longer!! read more

The facts: This place is dope! I'm a hipster asshole so I stick to that section for the most part It is a well curated store with a selection that's always changing. I only get a chance to visit once a month but it's always a surprising mix. Everything from Jessica Pratt, to Queens of the Stone Age, to smaller bands like Mount Carmel. I am not a vinyl afficionado, per se, but I do like my records. Josh, the owner, is very helpful in obtaining not in store records from their distributors. It's a cool and clean place not like some bigger outfits in Silver Spring. This is definitely one of the best records stores in DC. read more
