Since the neighborhood has houses with generous yards, this park is peaceful and empty weekdays if the weather isn't perfect. The only facilities are a lone portable WC but the low traffic makes it pretty tolerable.

Also, bring your bug spray! A lot of the trail is wooded, and there were lots of flies and gnats. We also saw two Cranes in the woods. That was a sweet, unexpected moment. There also is a beautiful barn, which is used for weddings and, I'm sure other events. It would be a lovely venue to hold your wedding. We noticed they are building a children's playground on the property as well. Which looks like it's going to be adorable when it's finished! We really enjoyed our hike. It is not strenuous, and you can take many different trails. Would do it again in fall!

My friend Amy H and I have been threatening to play tennis for a few weeks now. Yesterday, we…read morefinally made good on our promise, and it was a blast. In the two weeks leading up to the actuality of the event, we waffled on timing - "Oh, that's not terribly convenient for me, I like to nap at 1:42pm on Sundays" or amounts of humidity/sunshine - "Holy hell it's hot out! Eff this!" and locations to, you know, hit it around - "We could head to the courts by UEC, or at Lake Park, or the ones down by the lakefront but I don't want to do that because people will watch us down there and we'll wait until we get gooood to play there," etc. Little did I know that *Pumping Station Park has two more than adequate courts just kickin' it in the back of the park, behind the "batting cages" and next to the basketball courts. Win! *I never knew what the park across the street from Colectivo Humboldt was called until I went to check in yesterday and had to ask Amy. Pumping Station Park... the more you know! This park is small but mighty: a baseball/kickball diamond, tennis courts, batting cages, a basketball court... they've got what you need, MKE. Lots of leagues play sportballs at this small but mighty park... I often see practices of all types and sorts. (Read: post-work/school days and summertime weeknights can be busy.) Adequate green space to play catch with a real-life leather football with your significant other, too. If your significant other is good at throwing a football from 50+ yards, you may end up jamming the living daylights of your ring finger like me and subsequently endure a re-occurring sportsball "injury." Ow. My tender tendons. I'll be back to play lots more tennis with my friend Amy and maybe my friend Jessie, too. (And though it's a long shot, maybe L, too.)

This field brings back so many good memories. I graduated from Riverside in 1963. I lettered 4…read moreyears in baseball and we played all our home games here. The field looks almost the same as it did back in 1963 with a lot of improvements. What is missing is the light pole in left field. It was in fair territory and it took me awhile to learn how to play around it. I also remember that chasing the foul balls down the hill was assigned to the freshmen or youngest players on the team. I chased my fair share of foul balls. In 1963, we posted the best record ever for a Riverside baseball team with 12 wins. We also ran from the high school across the Locust Street bridge to the field everyday for practice with Coach Buro following us in his car! But it was also the many many days we played pick up baseball games during the summer after the season was over. We all practically lived at Pumping Station. I am glad to see that the Riverside continues to play their home games here and have kept up the success and tradition of baseball at Riverside High School!

But you will have to pay for food, parking, rides, pony rides, etc. If you're like me and just enjoy animals, you could almost come here and not spend any money... lol We were able to find street parking close by. We had a little walk to the fair, but I'm good for walking. All the animals were up close and personal, and so much more accessible than at the state fair. There were tons of food vendors and all the food you want at a county fair. We ended up eating at the clover cafe, because it was air conditioned and indoors, but the food there was meh. But cheap! $5.75 for a 1/3 lb cheeseburger! But it wasn't very well seasoned, and the "fried onions" on it definitely needed a little more cooking done to merit the "fried" part. Hot dog was only $4, and it was similar to the Costco hot dog. So would I eat here again? No, I'll spend the $14 to get a burger from a vendor just across the street in the fair, unless I'm with older friends who need air conditioning. For $3, you can get a cup of animal feed to pet some goats and llama and lambs, etc. For $10, there is a camel ride, but it will only take you twice around a small area (it's over in under 5 minutes). Pony rides for kids merry-go-round style also available. I had fun just watching other people enjoying the rides, while rubbing pig noses and feeding baby goats. We came in the morning, but wish I had stayed for the evening shows and music. Definitely planning another year!

The 2021 Ozaukee County Fair was the busiest I have ever seen. Animals are always the highlight for…read moreme, along with deep fried cheese curds ;) There wasn't really anything new that I saw but it was packed (I was there Friday and Saturday). It looked like mostly families enjoying the sunshine and the ability to go to an outdoor event. Great for the person that wants to experience a fair but not be overwhelmed; however, I would suggest attending during the day on weekdays to avoid a potentially large crowd. It really isn't anything spectacular, except that it is one of the last free fairs in Wisconsin. I do hope it remains that way in years to come.

This location is actually Harborview Park within the Ozaukee County Parks system. It is on top of…read morethe hill at southeast intersection of North Milwaukee Street and West Washington Street. It is a small parcel of land that is a natural, native plant landscape (not manicured, unable to walk through). The native plants attract beautiful butterflies and act as a filter for runoff. The wooden deck with picnic tables is a great place to eat lunch if you work in the area or are running up the hill, and provide a peaceful view of Port Washington Harbor.

This is a 28 acre park located along the west shore of the Milwaukee River in an area that used to…read morebe known as Milwaukee Falls. (Milwaukee Falls was also the birthplace of Paramount Records.) The park offers a large pavillion that can be rented, an open air octagon picnic shelter, an archery range, a horseshoe pitch, a 9-hole disc golf course, sand volleyball, fishing and a canoe launch on the Milwaukee River. Or, you can just relax and listen to the soothing sounds of the rapids that were once known as Milwaukee Falls. The site was the location of a large limestone operation in the late 19th Century. The Milwaukee Falls Lime Company was incorporated in 1890 and produced lime here until about 1920. At one time, there were five lime kilns here, at a time when Wisconsin was third in national lime production. On the southern end of the park is the open area left by the quarrying operation. A branch railroad line brought fuel in and hauled lime out, the abutments of a long-abandoned railroad bridge remain on the rivers's edge. Why kilns? Silurian dolomite, or limestone, is found in great abundance in eastern Wisconsin. It is comprised of calcium, magnesium, carbon and oxygen. When heated to temperatures approaching 2,000º the limestone breaks down, releasing carbon dioxide and the remaining powder, lime, was used for construction (plaster and mortar) and for whitewash. Farmers used it for soil conditioning and it was used in the tanning process by leather tanneries. In time, other chemicals became available and lime fell out of favor. Both pastoral and historical in one spot, Lime Kiln Park is a great place to play, admire history, or just listen to the relaxing sound of the Milwaukee Rapids. (Other extant lime kilns in the area include Lime Kiln Park in Menomonee Falls, Hadfield Lime Company in Waukesha on inaccessible private property, and Trimborn Farms in Greenfield.)

When someone says Hawthorn Hills the first thing that comes to mind is the sprawling golf course…read morelocated off county I in between Saukville and Fredonia. But there is a hidden gem called Hawthorn Hills county park located just north of the golf course. Enter in the pioneer village drive away and pass it. To your left you will see the park sign and a rustic gravel road loop that takes you to the trail head entrance. There are several picnic table areas off this road that you can picnic and grill out. Fires are only allowed in the provided grills. The main trail head isn't marked by a sign but by the larger parking area. The trail takes you deep into the forest. There are plank walkways, bridges and a pond to explore. The trail wraps around in a large loop that meets at the neighboring HH Peters building. Often used by the boy and Girl Scouts the building can be rented for special event. The trail system also hugs the Milwaukee river and has a few extra deep woods loops. This park is dog friendly and a great place to bring a family for a picnic or hike. It's truly a hidden gem because it is such a unused park. The park also has a letter box. Check out letter boxing.org to find out where it is. Oh one last thing- bring insect repellent!!! The pond is a mosquito nursery and you will need it on a cloud covered day!
