Stubborn Goat has good beer. Stop here to get beer but pass on the food. We tried fish and chips and hotdog here but was very disappointed with them. The fish was very thick and fresh; however, it had no taste. It was very bland and no amount of tarter sauce nor ketchup assisted in flavoring it. On top of that, hotdog in my freezer tastes better than the one served here.

Great view on a beautiful though windy day from the top deck. Jasmine's beer suggestion was excellent. Our order included the fully dressed hot dog and the mushroom sandwich with Swiss cheese, spinach and more between 2 thick slices of grilled sour dough bread. Everything was delectable and nothing was left on our plates. Music was not live, but was a good volume to enjoy and also have conversation. The scene was vibrant yet we were not rushed to leave, and we noticed others who were there prior to our arrival and still lingering as well when we left. Wouldn't hesitate return if we visit Halifax again.

Great place for beer wine and snacks on the water. The view from the top deck is great. Upper level has table service and food menu. Lower is self serve and there are hot dogs and other snacks too.

Wanting to check out this biter of Stillwell's entrepreneurialism, er, completely original concept, I met some friends here for some food and a drink one nice Halifax summer evening. Stubborn Goat at least did a lot of renos after winning the bid/pulling the carpet out from under Stillwell, which have added a lot more space, including a cool seating area on top of their shipping container bar. There's a full service sit down area, as well as a self-serve, and it's generally more private than Stillwell's incarnation was. There's a good selection of beers available, with some alternative boozes available for those not inclined towards beer. The food menu has a decent selection, with the likes of fancy tacos, crab cakes, an impressively expensive nachos, and several sandwich options, just to name a few. I went with the "Hali Dog" hotdog and fries, as well as the chicken skewers, and was given a playing card, which was a novel way to mark my order. I waited for a bit in the waiting section, which is basically a rail you can lean on that's within earshot of the bar. However, I noticed that someone was bringing orders around, so I went back to sit with my wife and our friends since they weren't very far back. It took a little bit for the food to come, but that wasn't surprising given the hefty crowd and limited kitchen space that they have. The tandoori chicken skewers were tasty, although I only got a small bite after my wife demolished them, so I'll take that as the vote of confidence instead of my one fleeting taste. I'm not sure what makes the Hali Dog Haligonian. There's not long-standing hotdog culture here, there wasn't donair meat on it, hell there wasnt even anything from the sea on it. However, it was a hot mess of condiments, with mustard and ketchup all over the bun, as well as mayo and relish on a Roselane dog. The inside of one of the buns was crusted with something that added crunch, but I hate split hotdog buns - you should be able to eat this with your hands, and not worry about holding it together! So between that and the condiment disaster, it was a solid four napkin affair. No one wants ketchup and mustard on the top of the bun, come on. The dog itself was good, although that had little to do with SGBG. The fries that came with it were mediocre-at-best, hand-cut fries. There wasn't a lot of crispness or flavour, other than fryer oil that was on the border of desperately needing a change. The SGBG has a killer location, and they've stepped up the quality of the space, but if you're messing up a hotdog and fries, you need to take a long, hard look at your kitchen. I may be back before the summer ends, but if I do, it's not because I initiated the trip. Hopefully their deep menu can provide some better bang for my buck.

    $8.. Very small :(

So I've been wanting to get to this beer garden for awhile, stillwell beer garden is always closed when I go so when we were on the waterfront today I was stoked to finally drop in here! Beautiful little spot! Has shaded spots and a roof top patio, even allows dogs too I believe? We sat on the self serve spot, and ordered Chicken skewers - $8 Salad- $12 Nachos - $18 Total came to $40 with tax Now.. I should have known from my experience at their main restaurant, being their portions are small and the prices are high.. As you can see from the photo I was very disappointed with the chicken. Great flavour but $8? I was expecting either a third skewer or even just more chicken. Salad was really good, fair price and nachos were huge! Hopefully I can get to the stillwell so I can compare!

I love this place! Located right downtown Halifax by the waterfront, it is a great place to meet with friends on a nice day/night. Lots is seatings available. The beer garden has two sections - one is self serve and other section is with service! The self serve side is dog-friendly too! Stubborn Goat also provides water for the dogs -- how thoughtful. Food is available along with of course, beer and ciders! Great selection. Definitely will visit again!

It's always a treat when the beer gardens open for the summer. The atmosphere is so funny, relaxed and the food is just amazing! We ordered the double cheese burger with truffle fries with a garlic aioli. The garlic aioli and the truffle fries truly stood out the most. Their truffle fries have always been great and delicious but this year they have truly outdone themselves! We also ordered the buffalo bites - which tasted amazing. However, they are all dark meat which is a little disappointing and the fatty areas are definitely not the greatest. Nevertheless, definitely a great and still pretty good. Our server Stephanie was amazing, always checking in, always keeping the drinks topped up - despite her many many tables. She had great advice and she's definitely a great asset there! You will expect to pay a pretty penny for the food and drinks, but on a hot day it's 100% worth it for the breeze, the view and the food. The tables and the entire eating area is clean. There is also two options to order - you can do self serve where you go up and order yourself and bring it back to your table and eat OR you can seat yourself on the 'balcony patio' or the server side and have the amazing wait staff help you out - which I always go for because their recommend on food, beer and everything else is the best! Have been coming here for a couple years now and will continue to :)

Really liked this place! Sunny Sunday afternoon - can't beat it. Our waitress Renee was amazing. Views of the water and great food. Tuna seared tuna tacos - on point. Fresh and spicy. Also had the croquettes - which were delish. Friend ordered mussels and the basket was overflowing.

Pool tables are a nice addition... I wasn't really sure what the $2 cover was going towards besides upkeep? A grungy/funky spot in the North End that's for sure!

This is not a tourist bar, unless you are a linoleum architecture tourist, or a $2.75 tequila shot…read moretourist, or a tourist of watching tight knit groups of locals sit around in circular formation. Charlie's is where you go when you want to go to Cheers. (Not the Cheers on Grafton St., the Cheers on TV according to your 6 y/o mind, which is really just the the theme song, fuzzy visuals, and conflating real life people with Cliff and/or Rhea Pearlman.) In short, it's where you go when you come home nostalgic and want to see all your old friends, enthusiastically buy each other drinks like it's a genuine gift, dance to one of those weird new electric blue jukeboxes, shout and pontificate around a pool table, and generally have a back slappin, squeezey hugging, chortling little time. The decor is like any affordable house, only the door has a key code and a woman sits at a table with a guest book when you come in. This does not make you feel cool, but it does make you feel like life is funny. The bartender is so used to over-friendly drunk patrons that nothing can melt him. I imagine that deep in his core is something more kind than anything I have ever known, but it is too precious to be shared. The last time I came here, someone apologized for asking me to dance when I turned him down. Apologized. For my rejecting him. A dark little mineshaft to the salt of the earth this place is, lemme tell ya.

It does have your average pub style food... but the prices were so, so cheap!! and they were listed to INCLUDE tax! A hamburger and fries for like $5.50?! Fish and chips for $6.25?! Insane!! Insanely good! I got the fish and chips (I'm turning into my father, ordering it wherever I go, uhooo!). The pieces were large and the batter was perfect; you could tell the fish was fresh. The chips were home made and delicious. We were the only people in there besides the few gamblers in the games room and the staff. So, obviously our server was super attentive and speedy; he filled our water glasses for us about 4 times! It was awesome. I feel like Gus' pub is like the hidden gem of greasy pub style food. He said he thought someone had already taken our order. All was good! My white hot restaurant rage slowly drained from my face. I was happy again. The reason it was just Okay was the super loud bros in the back, screaming about their weekend. I mean they were screaming. I felt like these guys might be regulars the way they were so comfortable here. I mean, I don't even scream in my own house. I'm never that comfortable. A lot of other tables were glaring over at them as well. Hello? Do you live here? Are you that confident that everyone in here wants to hear your conversation? Because I will bet my hard earned money they don't. They couldn't have been drunk, it was only 1pm on Sunday. Maybe they were drunk on VLT gambling. Who knows. All I know is, this place was full of regulars, at the bar, at tables, in the VLT room and I was uncomfortable. The Jenny burger was definitely worth all the uncomfortableness though. I added fries and coleslaw for only $3.50! This has to be one of the best pub burgers in the city. Although I'm raving about it, I honestly will probably never go back due to the high likelihood of screaming. I can't comfortably do anything while people are yelling around me. Sorry Jenny's Place. Standard but nice atmosphere with green walls, large wooden bar, a few booths in the front, sectioned off tables in the back if you want a bit cozier and darker feel. Friendly staff. Good selection of beers. For food, I tried their 'Requisite Nova Scotia Pub Nachos' - 'freshly fried corn tortilla chips, herbs, salsas, good cheese, veggies' their words - $19. They are definitely pretty and colorful topped with shaved radish, cilantro, some kind of hot saucey drizzle, splash of sour cream, few chunks of perhaps feta? Good portion size where I was full, and appreciate that they are meant to be different than your typical nachos, but didn't blow me away. Nothing wrong with them, just left me craving the more boring standard nachos with tons of stretchy cheese on it, peppers, tomato, etc. My friend had the 'Very British Pie' - roasted chicken potpie $16. It was good, rectangular shaped, burnt a bit on the corners, tad watery inside, simple but satisfying enough. We debated trying dessert but were actually full from the beer and entrees. I'd still go back here anytime and try something else on the menu.
