Huge mistake! I should have stopped a long time ago but everything happens for a reason. Recently, I had terrible pain in my feet and made myself an appointment with a podiatrist who properly treated me. They requested that I get a global referral from my primary care provider. I called my primary care physician and requested one but they adamantly refused to give me one because I hadn't been seen for foot pain in her office. I find that completely ridiculous. I am very disappointed. I will not be returning. There are better providers out there

It is the struggle to gain an appointment that is disappointing there. Dexter Family Practice seems to have an unwritten policy about when a person gets an emergent visit appointment and it is very challenging to be seen there on an emergent basis. I have even gone so far as to call the night before to ensure that there are morning emergent care spots available before taking the day off work. On three occasions, I called back in the morning and spoke to the intake person who told me they had no spots available that day. I have always called first thing as they opened. This is continually frustrating because it is not easy to take a day off work and when a copay for the Urgent Care is costly, it leaves a person with no options. The only times I could get appointments were long range or by superseding the emergent intake process by emailing a doctor. One has to have a U of M portal and password in order to email the doctor and it is challenging to email someone you have never seen in person. This process of having unwritten rules about who can have an appointment seems unfair and leaves a customer feeling like they have done something wrong. It would be nice of Dexter Family Practice to post publicly, guidelines about what types of ailments get emergency appointments and which do not. It seems like just being honest about that list and maybe even mentioning what illness and emergencies trump others would be best practice. I can understand it when a heart attack patient or burn victim gets into the Emergency Room before I do, even at U of M, where DFP is an affiliate. However, that set of guidelines on how to "triage" incoming emergencies seems fairly transparent. Does my possible strep throat trump her gastrointestinal problems on the third Monday in October? Well that is hard to say. If you have emergent care needs more often than run of the mill annual appointments, I would look for another doctor's office.

I knew it was important to get my pelvis properly aligned before I went into labor because improper alignment can intensify the pain and duration of childbirth. Dr. Beals-Becker is a doctor of osteopathy. She is seriously amazing. I would highly suggest seeing her instead of seeing certain chiropractors because she is an expert, especially if you are pregnant. I made the mistake of seeing a chiropractor, and he made me feel worse. I consulted Dr. Beals-Becker in a panic and she was extremely accomodating and was willing to squeeze me in the same day! I felt so stupid for not calling her in the first place. She is able to give excellent advice and does not make you come for repeat visits if it is not necessary. I am someone who can be very weary of doctors, but I have much respect for her and her practice -- that says a lot, especially since I trusted her when I was 8.5 months pregnant!

Today, my mother called to give a fax number so that she could get her referral faxed over for a procedure that is needed and Dr. Patrias was rude to my mother. She asked her "what do you need?" my mother processed to tell her and she told my mother that my mother needed to respect/or be nice to her, because she was the the doctor. It doesn't matter your title. If you are that self absorbed by titles, then that is another problem within itself. He he printed out that list and brought it with us to the offices -- I thought it would be embarrassed by it, but now I know it showed we meant business! We wanted to find someone who would consult with us and respect our decisions on vaccinations and antibiotics. We wanted to veer on the homeopathic side of care whenever possible. We wanted someone who respected the fact that our son was born at home with a midwife. It was hard to find all of this in a pediatrician, but in a family doctor, Dr. Scheerer was the It man. Dr. Scheerer is accomodating, I don't feel like a sardine in a tin can in his waiting room, he sits with you and really listens to your concerns. He knows his holistics but is also affiliated with St. Joe's, so you get the best of both worlds. He supports breastfeeding. He looks like he was in a rock band once, but has pictures of his family on a slideshow screensaver. Also, since he's a family doctor, he can take care of the whole fam. He sees babies every day, so we felt comfortable to have our son under his care. His staff remembers us and it really feels a lot more inviting than any other doctor I've been to. If you really like flourescent lights, a hospital setting, and a sterile-feeling environment, then he probably isn't for you. He is thoughtful, thorough and engaging. His standard of care is among the best I have ever experienced in any of a variety of medical settings. In an era when your counted as lucky to get more than 10 minutes with your physician, Dr. Scheerer takes the time needed to examine, discuss options and then take a few minutes to talk about what books we've been reading.

She listens to your concerns with patience and makes sure all of your questions are answered before you leave. My daughter had some minor health issues as a toddler and I was very satisfied with the way Dr. Raheja handled everything, from making herself very accessible for follow-up visits and phone consultations to facilitating referrals to see specialists.
