I do pro bono career counseling. My observations are based on multiple full days spent on site…read moremeeting with clients and staff. This review reflects what I personally observed and experienced during that time. Clients arrive and spend one to several days in Detox. Up to six people share one bathroom, and each client has a roommate. Nursing staff brings in food and checks on Detox clients around the clock. Then, clients move to cabins or two shared houses, and have to be driven to and from the main site at the start and end of the day with backpacks and no access to their rooms for about 15 hours per day. Clients spend from 9 am until about 9:30 pm in sessions, which consist of various types of therapy and AA-based meetings. There are occasional off-site activities including horse therapy and hikes. LISTENING TO SHARES is common. I witnessed various levels of staff preparedness. Taking attendance and dealing with paper appointment reminders can take significant time. There are three meals per day, and clients are served in two shifts. I heard clients share that the food is good if high in calories. Breakfast includes a daily scramble with various ingredients and there are sometimes short-order items; clients can also have instant oatmeal, smoothies, yogurt, fresh fruit, toast, coffee, fountain drinks, tea. Lunch and dinner are served hot and usually contain meat; salad is always present. Fare is generally American-grilled salmon, sandwiches, ribs, grilled vegetables, nachos, chicken breasts, pork cuts, etc. Special diets are accommodated, often with tofu. I witnessed many closures and significant waits with the office and nursing. Clients are required to do chores daily, such as working as dishwashers in the kitchen with professional equipment for 45-90 minutes. Clients get one nicotine run per week, rare haircuts, access to laundry every 10-14 days, and unannounced urine tests and K-9 visits. In my time there, I perceived the client base to be predominantly white. I heard multiple mentions of Burning Man, "spirituality," Jerry Garcia (whose death in or around here spawns many rumors), Buddhist centers in Berkeley, temples in the woods, henna, travels to Asia, dharma recovery as Buddhist rather than Hindu. I witnessed many racially-implicated incidents, as well as white-male shares numerically dominating many sessions. Sometimes there are readings from the LGBT AA book; flags went up for Pride Month. I witnessed some clients being allowed to curse at others publicly. There are views of a valley, and deer walk through daily. There are significant hills and stairs. Many of the 12 acres are off-limits. There is a small gym. In summer, you can use the pool, but it can be closed by staff due to client behaviors. At times, there are not enough seats for clients. After five days with no device access, clients can use their phones and/or laptops from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm during free time. There are rules around vaping, smoking, device use, sleeping during sessions, but I witnessed a wide range of compliance, staff response, and staff breaking rules. Families can bring clients ONE bag ONE time per 30 days with various supplies, which are checked. Clients can order FIVE Amazon items per 30 days. Family or friends can visit every Saturday, and are expected to participate in some programming. I often felt very upset in this space.

The attitude of the staff there was like I was skipping my mother's funeral. Complete lack of compassion. On several occasions, people with ZERO backgrounds in medicine were grilling me about the severity of my back pain and how I could maybe tough it out because that day each of these 5 virtually identical meetings were just too important to miss. I was very clear checking into this place I had herniated disk. Last but not least This place charged me and my insurance a fortune but couldn't pass on the chance to make more money forcing patients to do all the cleaning of the facility on a daily basis. Look. I'm not saying they don't have their points and aren't benefiting for some, but for me personally, these guys need to staff better and prioritize recovery instead of rigid structure and authoritarian dogma. I don't think 12 steps is very effective. It's all black and white. No nuance If you can get your insurance to get you into Bayside I SERIOUSLY suggest you do so.

During COVID, she became very ill and was placed on hospice. After caring for her at home for 9 months, we were advised to find a long-term care facility. I briefly placed her at another facility in San Rafael, but knew within hours it wasn't the right fit. Finding South Marin was a turning point. My mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer, kidney failure, and dementia. The care, compassion, and respect she's received here have been exceptional. A special thank you to Kelly, the social worker, who is knowledgeable, supportive, and truly cares. Carina, the activities director, is also wonderful and brings so much kindness to the residents. All the nurses, assistants, and staff have been wonderful. I never imagined putting my mom in a SNF, but I feel very lucky she's at South Marin. As a former long-term care volunteer ombudsman, I also want to add some perspective. I've seen reviews mentioning delays in care. The reality is that staffing shortages are a widespread issue across the industry due to policy and funding challenges. That said, the staff here consistently do their best under difficult circumstances. Their PT (what she tends to need most) is terrific - the PT therapists seem to experience little turnover as the same individuals have provided PT for my mom over several stays. Despite being very busy, the social workers are also very helpful. And Dr. Susan Nguyen (the hospitalist there) is wonderful - caring, smart, and on it. Rehab isn't fun, the facilities are all really busy and frustrations are inevitable. But we will keep requesting South Marin when my Mom needs it b/c it's the best around.

Golden gate recovery integrates their clients into the community instantly doing step down system which really benefited my brother. He had been to about three rehabs with no success. I spoke with a guy Quinn and another Aiden who work here. Great experience and my brother has now been sober just over a year. Extremely grateful. It's funny because I went to a meeting with my brother when he got his one year chip and it's like this program has their own community/ fellowship. A Truly Exceptional Community -- The Vincent, San Rafael…read more My dad has been living at The Vincent since March 2024, and the experience has grown into something truly exceptional. When he first moved in, the community was only a couple of years old and, like many new assisted-living facilities, was working through some early growing pains. Staff turnover was higher at that time, and there were occasional glitches as the building found its rhythm. Over the past year, that has changed significantly. Quality staff have stayed, new team members have been strong additions, and many of the issues we saw early on have simply disappeared. The stability and consistency now are remarkable. What has remained steady from the beginning is the heart of the community. My dad was welcomed into a warm, supportive environment where residents truly look out for one another. The caregivers are attentive, compassionate, and incredibly dedicated -- they know the residents well and treat them with genuine respect and tenderness. It feels like a place where people are cared for, not just looked after. We visit often, and our family has had many dinners in the beautiful white-tablecloth dining room. Meals are freshly prepared by the private chef, and the food is consistently very good. The Vincent also hosts happy hours a couple of times a week with live entertainment, which is a highlight for many residents and adds to the sense of community and joy in the building. The housekeeping team keeps everything spotless, and the overall atmosphere is clean, calm, and welcoming. Their points-based care system is fair and transparent, and as my dad's needs have increased, I've found their re-evaluations thoughtful and reasonable. On-site services -- like the podiatrist and monthly dentist visits -- have been invaluable. More recently, my dad's health has declined, and we are transitioning him into the Memory Care unit and beginning hospice. It's a very emotional step for any family, but the memory care team has given us tremendous comfort. The unit is bright, clean, and staffed with people who clearly have experience and a deep understanding of cognitive decline. While moving his things, I've had the chance to observe how gently they care for the most vulnerable residents. It speaks volumes about the philosophy that guides this community. Although the surrounding neighborhood is not my favorite, the quality of life inside the building is exactly why families choose assisted living. It is safe, uplifting, and genuinely resident-centered. I've been a front-line medical professional for 30 years and toured every senior living community in Marin when preparing for my parents' transition. The Vincent stands out. They have supported my dad with dignity, kindness, and professionalism -- and they've supported our family through some difficult turns as well. My Dad still likes living there and we are still hoping a strong ED will come take the reins and get this once excellent place back on track. Until then I cannot make any recommendations either way, and I leave it up to the families to come to Cogir and decide for themselves whether it is a good fit for their loved one.

They took her arthritis cream away 3 times as it wasn't prescribed. It's an over the counter cream that helps with her pain and they take it away! Horrendous all the way around.

She was assigned a private room with a view of rolling hills and a flock of wild turkeys and the occasional deer that roamed the grounds. All of the nursing and medical staff who attended Mom were clearly well trained and treated her in a dignified and compassionate manner. The staff were happy to accommodate our mother's wish to spend her last days surrounded by family, making her own choices of whether to participate in scheduled social activities. She enjoyed the food and when she or family members asked for little extras from the kitchen, the answer was always yes. We were all made to feel completely welcome and comfortable during Mom's stay, and at the end of her life the staff offered us lots of kind support. I strongly recommend Tiburon Hills to anyone seeking expert and humane care in a setting as beautiful as anything Marin County has to offer.

She said a counselor would call me back within 24 hours. Nobody ever called. I felt as if my privacy was invaded with absolutely no purpose whatsoever. Nobody ever called to even apologize for not following up. If this is the type of responsibility they are projecting just in an "intake" phone call, then I doubt they have any quality services to offer thereafter. I actually did call back to complain for them ignoring me. The person on the phone (it sounded like the same person who did not help me in the first phone call) started talking over me, rather than letting me finish my sentence. In fact, she first wanted to know (and I quote) "what my situation" was. I don't think so, lady.
