Just a quick update: as I keep working, I appreciate not only the weekly instruction in two martial arts styles but the broader connections to practitioner communities. I take classes mostly in the stand-up art of toshindo, but I've taken a weekend seminar with Henry Akin (of BJJ). And this weekend I had a great seminar with a master in toshindo working on bo (the six-foot staff) -- movement, striking, and putting it all together. These seminars only happen when a school's leadership maintains effective working relationships with master teachers across the country. Update: it's been about 2 years and I'm still loving the staff and community of practitioners that train here. There are often special guests that come to enlighten us. Thank you QMAC for making a believer out of me. This place is perfect if you're looking to try out jujitsu. I can't speak for the other arts taught there, but I can say one look at some of the long bows makes me want to know more! Micheal and his staff are accommodating, patient and well versed in their craft. The coolest thing about this spot is if you are interested in jujitsu, you can come try before you commit to anything. But be warned "it's super addictive" I love this martial art & have been fascinated by it for some time now, it's so great to have a place to go and train with patient guys and gals who are of similar mind sets. read more

Having a great experience at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Great environment for learning. It's defensive training not fighting. All the teachers and students are really nice and welcoming. Everybody wants you to learn. It's not an ego trip to outdo somebody. You get to see the move demonstrated several times from different angles then you get to practice it with a partner. Its taking me a bit to get the hang of some of it because I am totally new to martial arts but all the guys I have partnered with have been patient and helpful for me to learn. This Groupon deal is a no brainer great deal. You get the uniform to keep and unlimited training for a month to really try it out to see if its something you want to continue with. About to finish 6-months of membership for me and my son. We are enrolled in Gracie Jujitsu program. My son is a 4-year old enrolled in the Titans class. He loves the body movements taught the class, and his teachers Matt and Ashleigh are world-class children's instructors! My son also celebrated his 5th birdthday recently at the studio, and this is an offering that the school offers to anyone who wants to have a great birthday party! All the parents and kids had a blast. I also learn alot about Jujitsu in the adult classes. Good vibes from the various students and the instructors are certified instructors from the Gracie headquarters, so they do properly follow the philosophy of the founders - defend, control, and submit your opponents. If you stick with this training for a couple of years, you will be able to practice self-defense when needed. read more

I've been a student with the Phoenix Quest Center since 2011 and no matter what, I'm always left walking away from the Dojo feeling good, accomplished and most of all inspired. I've done some training in Muay Thai, I've gotten a few belts in Tae Kwon Do and even tried Aikido back in San Francisco when I use to live there. As much as I love and respect all forms of Martial Arts and feel each one is amazing and unique in their own right, for me the Phoenix Quest Center is my Dojo. The PQC teaches To Shin-Do Ninjutsu. A modernized version of Ninjutsu founded by Stephen K Hayes. I love it because it's definitely a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The applications of the techniques are very practical, yet effective. Simple but complex, fun but challenging. Amazing yet deadly. One of the key factors I found most interesting is the absolute psychological part of the training. From checking out other Dojos and styles and doing some from my past, the PQC definitely delivers a unique outlook when training in self defense and how it can be very beneficial in a real life situation. Understanding beyond an analyzed situation and truly emphasizing on being aware and mindful of your surroundings, is something I really love about the teachings and training here. And everyone in PQC becomes your family and friends. From head instructor Michael Stinson to even a white belt who's been there for 3 weeks. As soon as you get started in your training, everyone is willing to help and allow you to grow and give constant support. What are great spot to learn something new like I wanted to do and now I'm learning a lot of cool tools to defend myself. I was in the military for along time and I'm still learning new tools here. I spent many years in traditional martial arts and I was getting burned out so I took a few years off to pursue other interests. After taking a few year off I wanted to get back into training. Every school I went to had forms (kata) high kicks and point fighting and if you were lucky the last 10mins of class you were shown a self-defense technique I needed more, I was almost ready to give up and quit martial arts for good, it was then I found the Quest center, after talking to Mr. Stinson on the phone as he informed me that there was no forms or point fighting, I had to come in and take a class I couldn't believe I was learning self defense the first day. After class Mrs. Stinson asked how I liked the class. I told her it was more than I expected. Reality-based martial arts is what I always wanted to do, This system has so much to offer with an ever ending wealth of material. I have black belts in three other systems but this one is special. As you get older it's very important to keep your mind and body active and I find To- Shin Do does that for me. Not only physically but mentally as well, I learn something new every class and I think that's great. To-Shin Do gives me self awareness and confidence to deal with any situation that may arise. I have been a member of this martial center for years and I cannot think of another school that I would possibly want to study in. I have tried many different arts, but this school offers the most practical and realistic self-defense techniques for people of all shapes and sizes. Not only do you have the opportunity to learn To-Shin Do (ninjutsu) for attacks of all kinds, but also Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for ground fighting. With martial arts, I find most people are interested in learning a new skill but are worried that they will end up training with people who take it overboard. Or, on the flip side, they worry that they will be like Kramer from Seinfeld and be seen as the adult that pummels third-graders at the dojo. You need not worry about either of those issues at this school! The owner of the school is very down-to-earth, approachable and easy to work with, which makes the atmosphere very relaxed. He is constantly flying around the country learning new methods, so his classes improve every year. Occasionally other black belts will teach the classes, but they are incredibly accomplished in their own right, and you'll find that you'll look forward to the different perspectives. Putting martial arts aside, I just enjoy the people that train at Quest. I have never seen or heard of a negative incident in all my years there. My interactions with my fellow students are always positive and I have learned a ton from them since joining the school. I can't tell you how many times I've shown up for class annoyed or stressed about something and walked out after feeling centered again. We feel fortunate to have our son taking classes here. All of the instructors are knowledgeable, energetic, and able to train kids of all ages. The training obviously teaches self defense, but the benefits are much more broad. Each class begins with a lesson that requires introspection and engagement with the teacher & other students. This, I feel, is just as meaningful as the physical instruction. Our son has shown improvement with respect, self discipline, and focus. It's satisfying to see his confidence grow. As a kid, teenager and young adult i trained in multiple types of martial arts. I learned from fantastic instructors and really appreciate dojo's that teach more than just punching and kicking. On my sons 7th birthday he asked to begin training so I looked around and found Quest Martial arts and their programs for kids. All I can day about this school is great things. One night I read Martial art especially JiJutsu is great for depression. I'm so glad I picked this school. This place is a total scam and a ripoff. Talk about bait and switch. They had a offer on Groupon where you pay $35 and get 20 sessions and a uniform for a child that I purchased for my son, only they don't accept their own offer. They claimed that offer has expired even though it was very much active on Groupon and instead they offered a lesser Groupon for more money. They leave the "expired" Groupon active just to get foot traffic because they are banking on parents still signing up since they are already there. I'll be reporting their shady business practices to Groupon also. read more
