I would not have gone to any other ortho doctor for the TKR, even though I did seek a second opinion because I was hoping I wouldn't need knee replacements yet. The second Dr said the same thing, so I scheduled theTKR with Dr. Hummel. He did the right knee at the end of October. I did the therapy and exercises, and regained full range of motion by my 9 week checkup. The left knee was done at the end of February, with similar, excellent results. Dr. Hummel is very specific about what he wants you to do to heal. But if you follow his instructions, you get the best results. I don't hesitate to recommend him highly.

I saw dr Hummel. He introduced himself without looking me in the eye and said " what is it you want from me?" Shocked at the kirt treatment I said" I'm not a surgeon I don't know". No questions were asked. I was x-rayed and Dr. Hummel returned. "I see you are addicted to pain pills." He says. I reply" I'm dependent on them I have chronic pain and need them to function.". He then snaps back with "that's what all addicts say". He then proceeds to give me a list of five things I need to do , such as quit the pain pills, quit my job, loose 30 pounds, start water therapy, and something else. Then I was to return in thirty days and if I had made good progress on list then he would decide if he would treat me. I now thank him for being such bad people person because I found the absolute best surgeon. After getting over being scolded by some one who didn't know me or even take anytime to try I found Dr. who said "you are hurting let's get you fixed."

While I was hospitalized at Overland Park Regional Medical Center last year Dr. Adam Kaye did the…read moresurgical procedure to insert a central catheter line (perma-port) to be used as an easy intravenous access site during my upcoming chemo treatments. It's a very quick and simple procedure, but not without some risk because the surgeon needs to be careful that the wires that are part of the apparatus don't actually touch the heart muscle as it's being inserted. In this case everything went fine and there were no problems with the insertion. Approximately a year later the perma-port stopped working properly, and I had completed the chemo treatments, so I had Dr. Kaye remove it at the beginning of April. This was another relatively simple procedure, done at the Overland Park Surgery Center under local anesthesia. It did involve a bit more tugging and pulling than I anticipated, but there was nothing painful about it. My only subsequent concern was that a good-sized lump developed afterwards under the incision that was fairly tender to the touch and looked bruised. Follow-ups with Dr. Kaye (a really nice, cheerful guy, by the way) were reassuring -- sometimes after this kind of procedure where there's a remaining pocket under the skin, where the port had been located, fluid can accumulate during the healing process. There was no infection, the small incision itself has healed nicely, and a month or so later the lump is now considerably smaller as the fluid is being reabsorbed and it's no longer tender. I just saw Dr. Kaye again to check, and he recommended hot compresses on the site to accelerate the shrinking of the remaining lump. That's certainly no big deal to do! I appreciate Dr. Kaye's accessibility and his willingness and ability to explain what was going on, both before the procedure and during the healing process. I've been fortunate to have never had any other surgeries, but that means that I didn't know exactly what to expect at each stage and Dr. Kaye's been good about explaining what I needed to know. Considering this experience, I'd be happy to have Dr. Kaye again as my surgeon if I ever need to have something done, and I can recommend him to others who may need surgery.

After having an x-ray, she was told she indeed had a fracture and was referred to Liberty Hospital Orthopedics. A couple of days later she was contacted by Liberty Hospital Orthopedics and was told there was nothing they could do and that she should see an orthopedic surgeon. What? Isn't that what they do? I then took her to our usual orthopedic clinic, Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance, where she was seen by a surgeon's assistant. They x-rayed her foot and they told us her fractures were minor and there was no need to do anything more than wear the protective shoe she was given, and her toes would heal just fine. Liberty Orthopedics created a huge fiasco that demonstrated huge incompetence. If they can't diagnose broken toes, what makes anyone think they can handle more serious orthopedic issues. Pitiful. Simply pitiful.

Earlier this year, he began experiencing knee pain and instability, leading to a fall and a hospital stay in January. X-rays were taken, and following rehab, we began care with Dr. Roberts' office. Initial treatment included cortisone shots, but by April, the pain and lack of stability worsened. A physician's assistant in the office provided a brace, which was ineffective. When we requested a follow-up, Dr. Roberts was too booked to see us in a timely manner, so we were referred to KU for evaluation. KU confirmed, after they ran X-Rays, that the knee was not properly aligned but had even longer surgical wait times. Based on a positive prior experience with Dr. Roberts (who performed a successful surgery for a family member), we opted to stay with him, hoping for faster care. In preparation for surgery, I moved the patient into senior living where he could receive physical therapy and home health assistance. We completed all required pre-op steps, including medical clearance, pre-surgical classes, and medication prep. Surgery was scheduled for June 11. On the day of surgery, Dr. Roberts felt the knee and expressed concern about a possible torn patellar tendon. He ordered an MRI and admitted the patient overnight. That was the last time the patient saw or heard directly from Dr. Roberts. The next morning, a physician's assistant visited the hospital room, and asked us if tests had been run. I was discouraged at this question thinking, "Your office ordered the tests, you should know that and you should be coming to see us to explain the results not to ask if the tests even happened." He said the doctor would be in touch later and that the patient would be staying overnight again at the hospital. However, within the hour, we were notified that there was no tendon tear, and the patient was being discharged. The sudden decision left us scrambling to arrange specialized wheelchair transport (another expense) with little notice. Unfortunately, the patient was left with no plan of care and no follow-up communication from the doctor's office. I called the office immediately and didn't receive a response until late the following day--nearly 36 hours later. We were offered an appointment with a PA or to see Dr. Roberts a month later. I messaged through the patient portal with several questions: What did the MRI actually show? Is physical therapy still safe? Is this a complex case requiring a different specialist? Could we get a Zoom call or any direct communication with Dr. Roberts? It took another full week to receive any answers, and the response was minimal--only confirming there was no tendon tear. At that point, I began seeking a second opinion. Another orthopedic team was willing to evaluate the case that same week--if they could get the medical records. Despite multiple requests from myself and the new office, it took four days to get the records transferred. The new doctor is now seeing the patient on July 1--still earlier than Dr. Roberts' next available appointment. They've already scheduled additional imaging to fully understand the situation before the first visit. In hindsight, I believe the biggest issue was that the pre-surgical evaluation was incomplete. For a patient with a complex condition and non-standard mobility, more detailed imaging and planning should have happened before surgery was scheduled--not the morning of. While we acknowledge that not all cases are simple, the lack of timely communication after surgery was canceled--and the absence of a plan for next steps--caused unnecessary confusion, costs, stress, and delays in care. We had high hopes based on a previous successful surgery by Dr. Roberts on a different family member. However, this experience has been deeply disappointing. If a case is outside of a physician's scope of expertise, the patient deserves to know that up front, not after significant preparation and disruption to their life. We spent a great deal of time and money and are now back at square one with a new physician.

When his nurse was told that I didn't think I was in any condition to go home, he became agitated and I was told, " you can spend the night but you will be leaving first thing in the morning!" I became afraid and then asked my wife to take me home immediately. Dr. Stanton refused for me to receive home healthcare to aid in my recovery in spited of my insurance approving it and me needing it. He had a total disregard of my condition or needs. BEWARE! There are many much better doctors.
