While on a health journey myself, I have gone down several sizes and have brought bags and bags of practically new clothes - leggings, summer pants and t-shirts, winter coats, sweaters, brand new bras and panties, shoes, sneakers, and hygiene items to this shelter knowing these items will help women get their basic needs met, which is the first step in helping them transform their lives.

They seem intensely stressed and have terrible people skills. I work in healthcare and have restaurant experience, so I understand the hustle but the level of rude is so unnecessary. One of my shifts, I witnessed a staff member aggressively tell a resident to work faster plating food. He had stepped away for a moment to grab some more apple sauce. It was near the end of service and one of the servers told us people were about done so he made the decision to step away. The staff member was so rude and belittling right in front of everyone. Totally power trip. It was really uncomfortable. Another shift, I passed drinks. Stacey was running bevs and she was so aggressive. She kept shoving full pitchers at me and snagging my not-even-empty ones. One time she shoved it so hard while I was pouring a drink that I spilled water on one of the diners eating breakfast. Afterwards they invite you to have a "family meal" but they completely ignore you if you're new. It's a bad vibe. I'm in the process of obtaining my bachelors in nursing and I'm close to graduation. I am interested in community health and psych. I was hoping to volunteer on a weekly basis to gain perspective on this population who are often discriminated, marginalized, and vulnerable. Sadly, I won't be going back.

I love thrifting and estate sale shopping, so Community Warehouse was an excellent choice for me on this special day. I love Community Warehouse's mission! It's a nonprofit furniture bank that collects home goods and redistributes them to those in need. The warehouse space in the back accepts furniture donations, and houses a large collection of pieces for their program. There is also a retail space in the front of the building where visitors can peruse estate sale home goods like furniture and decor. There is a wide variety of products to choose from, and everything I saw was in excellent condition. The store is pleasantly curated, and prices are fair and well-marked. I purchased a nightstand, and found many other items that may draw me back to the store sooner than later. I'm pleased to add Community Warehouse to my regular rotation of home goods stores I frequent.

It can help feed and house for one night, or help a youth come back into the fold of society through transitional housing and job training. It's a safe stable place to come for youths dealing with homelessness first hand. This is also a great place to volunteer if you are looking to do something for the community. Pivot has played a large roll in my sexual health now for years. They are there for me when I am…read morein a position to not afford proper health care coverage but also when I have it and am able to donate to support the good that they do. I have been utilizing Pivot's services since I first moved to Portland and while sometimes their free clinic hours can be crazy town they do the best they can with the resources they have available and still seem to pull off a pretty great thing. So here's the deal, you have to show up early because sometimes there is even a line before the door opens. They set aside the proper amount of time for each testing/screening so it's about 4 per hour. They have 2 screeners so if you are number 8 expect to be there for up to two hours. I believe they can only do 3 hours of testing so they do have a cut off and have to turn some folks away typically. This can not be easy for them as they know this service is needed so be kind in your reactions and patient with you time. I am not going to list the free screen days/times as they may change but do visit their website for the latest info and note that the location has changed to SE Belmont. The new space is beautiful, great retro building, clean new facilities and set up for exactly what they are offering. The acoustics however are less than ideal for both staff and patient so be respectful and quiet when appropriate. Check in is supposed to be anonymous and private but the layout of the lobby hinders most of that. Some reviews have listed poor services or bad customer service. I am sure the staff rotates over the years and I have been fortunate to have nothing but kind and wonderful people to help me. Pro tip: if you just need a rapid HIV test screening they can usually do those throughout the evening as they are done separate from the full screenings. I HIGHLY recommend utilizing their services if you need them or want to support them. This is a separate service from the clinic it is in so make sure to thank the staff or give them a hug for doing what they do on volunteer hours.
