It's like getting Healthcare in a better country with Universal Healthcare. Well-informed staff who communicate with you and with each other and take meaninful notes. Fast, proactive service. They talk to you with courtesy and respect and not down to you. They LISTEN. Costs are reasonable, and if you need help/resources they will try to assist you and connect you with relevant resources. The most important thing is the staff TALK to you, each other, and other medical facilities. None of that "I can't do that" nonsense other MDs give when you ask them to talk to other doctors and forward information. Day before appointment their pharmacy called to confirm allergies and medications. Day of appointment they wrote scripts for all my medications and helpfully pointed out tests for toxicity that would be advised. They get it done lightning fast and do anything they can to help and accomidate you. Doctors and staff were never rude, aggressive, or condescending. I was always treated with respect, dignity, and courtesy. Bizzarely (or perhaps not considering they are non-profit) everyone was MORE competant and friendly than the for-profit medical industrial complex I've been nagivating that charges through-the-nose for worse service. read more

I came in a couple days ago due to feeling sickly(duh). I recently got on OHP. Outside In accepted my call and I was seen the same day. I want to start off by saying thank you to Daydrina MA for helping me through the first part of the appointment! I have a lot of anxiety around visiting doctors after some bad experiences medically and she made sure to make me feel like I did not need to apologize and also let me swab my own nose for the covid test(which causes me extreme panic from a past nurse shoving it WAY too deep up my nose, so that was beyond relieving for me as a patient), I cannot thank her enough for that. Carrie Kent D.O. Was my provider and went above & beyond in explaining to me how to properly care for myself as this virus runs its course. I was able to get a doctors note, and am going back in today actually at 9:40AM for another check in because symptoms have worsened. The wait time was not long and the process to get booked was straight forward. Y'all have no idea how relieving it has been to have a good medical experience after being scared to visit a regular doctor for YEARS due to chronic pain from an unnecessarily traumatic surgery done around 5 years ago. Long story long, I appreciate the staff here and am considering keeping Carrie Kent D.O. on as my primary care physician as I have recently been put on Oregon Health Plan and need to start taking care of my body! Thanks again, if anyone is stressed about going in, please don't hesitate getting the help you need, I get more stressed trying to figure out what's wrong with me online so it was nice to have a medical professional give me solid advice and I'm excited to go back in the next half hour to continue care. I will be going back later today to fill my Ibuprofen prescription which is also covered by OHP. Don't know what those who had a bad experience here are talking about. Not saying they lying. But who knows. Cuz my experience was nothing but positive. They helped tamp down my testosterone levels which were abnormally high. Now it's under the average cis woman's. I actually had my T upped to match cis women cuz it was too low. This place also got me off E pills, and now I take injections which they helped start me on. It's made my life much better. They got an on site pharmacy which helps bcuz I get discriminated against by pharmacists sometimes. I only wish they got me on progesterone and not just estrogen. But that was a few years ago. Knowing what I know now I would've mentioned it in conjunction with it. But they're learning from us too. And for what it's worth if it wasn't for this place I would be dead. They saved me. They didn't even care about me being unhoused. They treated me like an equal. An unusual thing for people like me in the healthcare system. So glad this place exists. If your a young woman please do not go to any meetings here alone. Even if they say it's safe. Today was the second time and it ended with police and an ambulance after one of the people they let in threw boiling hot coffee onto my face &All over my clothes. My face is literally burning. The woman just left while everyone stared at me. No stuff did anything to help me. No one called the cops I had to call them on my coffee soaked phone! I just wanted information on housing because with an struggling I didn't want my half my face to melted off with a whole bunch of ruined items no one is going to replace. How do I begin to explain the wonderful, life-saving haven that is Outside In... I had no insurance, no extra funds and a severe chronic illness. They did everything in their power to keep me healthy and employed despite very limited resources. Things that I needed but could never afford were given to me with a smile when I only had $20 to give. If they don't have the resources to help you, they WILL find someone that does. They got me a free IUD and placed it. They gave me my antidepressants when I had one pill left and nowhere else to go. They let me step on the scale backwards to honor my eating disorder recovery. They gave me doctor's notes so I could take the time off work I desperately needed. They did free blood work. They helped me find a specialist... I could go on forever. My point is... these people are angels. I owe my health (and life, really) to them. I can't imagine a better organization to look after my (or anyone else's) wellbeing. I have insurance now, but I will continue to go, donate to and volunteer for this amazing NONPROFIT. Infinite love to all the beautiful, extraordinary souls at Outside In. read more

Just an addendum to the previous review: There are no clinic hours Tuesday morning, nor are their evening clinics any days but Monday and Wednesday. Morning clinics generally focus services on youth under 30. Outside In is a wonderful safe environment for all people, and has specialty clinics targeting Trans clients, and is a wonderful soft tissue infection facility. Outside In approaches the problem of homelessness with a multi-faceted approach that includes transitional housing for youth, a transitional employment program through Virginia Woof doggie day care, a medical clinic, syringe exchange (one of the first in the country) and tattoo removal. Additionally, they serve the community by doing medical outreach in their mobile medical van. Great place, great people, great mission. read more

The people who work here should be sainted. While I was waiting for a prescription to be filled I saw them give clothes and food to a little old lady who came in for help. I get the impression that they're stretched a bit thin on resources, but they've been so kind to me in every interaction I've had and really saved me after my new insurance refused to cover medication that I've taken for many years. read more

Steer clear of this clinic. There are so many better option. they reduced my meds and let me suffer from constant naseau and vomiting, daily sometimes I couldn't get out of bed for weeks. I finally started self medicating and discovered it was a dosage issue. Like I had told my doctor. This went on for a year. They're hacks. I love Outside In for so many reasons - the biggest being the sliding scale healthcare. Word to the wise: if you go in, be prepared to spend some time waiting there - I've literally spent half a day or so to get a five minute blood draw, and I've also been forgotten by the staff while in a room for an appointment for over an hour. They're chronically understaffed and doing their best to serve a client base of need that is larger than their resources. Also, you're most likely to get served if you are youth (or under thirty), homeless, or in a transitional housing situation, as those are the demographics they serve first and foremost. However, the other EXCELLENT resource Outside In offers is the Trans Clinic. If you don't have insurance and are low income, this is probably the very best way for you to get access to hormones in a controlled medical setting (though keep the above caveats in mind). Be prepared to wait a bit for your initial appointment - they don't have the Trans Clinic but once a month, so it may be a couple of months before they can fit you in, but it's easy to get going once you're there. I called for an appointment in December of 2007, and was able to get in the following month. The first question out of the doctor's mouth was "Are you on Testosterone?" Following my negative reply, the next question was "Do you want to be?" While I, for personal reasons, did not opt to go onto testosterone for two more years, I could have been on my way to having a prescription and hormones within a month's time, if I had been so inclined, without a penny out of my underemployed pocket. No charge for the bloodwork, either, which can cost a pretty penny - the only thing one has to pay for are the hormones themselves, since Outside In doesn't dispense on location. read more

HEALTH CARE FOR ALL!!!! We live in the WEALTHIEST nation in the world and yet don't care for our sick. When every other hospital turned me away because of my lack of insurance, outside in helped me. To that I am grateful beyond words. These people get 5 stars just for being there and providing the service that they do to people who would otherwise go unnoticed. I lost my health insurance and had to go there yesterday for a pain in my side. So far, they have done everything that they can to get to the bottom of the pain. Unfortunately you'll have to plan on being there all day as resources are limited and demand is high. But if you need something-go there. They won't turn you away. read more

Speaking generally, this is a wonderful resource for those in Portland and surrounding environs, to gain access to health-care and related social services, with a straightforward and harm-minimizing approach. The latter is important since many potential clients are, in the earliest stages at-least, would-be criminals. Giving someone options goes a long way toward preventing the actions that could lead to arrest and the often ineluctable cycle thereafter. A wealth of information can be found here. Whether one is searching for how to take advantage of Oregon's liberal health benefits, where to find homeless shelters or camps, food banks, rehabilitation services, or something not mentioned, they take seriously the role of advisor and will point one in the right direction. Those most susceptible to the social ills that can lead to a life of incarceration, and often finding themselves - by no accident, in this part of Portland, should enjoy their services. But more than this, those that feel they are without options, those facing abuse or intolerance, need answers relative to health care, on a large scale or the more personal/local. read more

When I started getting scary symptoms and health concerns, my anxiety of it all increased as someone without medical insurance. How could I ever afford to go see a doctor? I don't have $150 to blow on an initial appointment, let alone prescriptions and followup fees. So through my search, I found out one of the the BEST resources Portland has to offer EVER. Outside In has been a godsend! The staff are super friendly, the place is clean, and the doctors and staff are extremely helpful, spend their time with you, and don't blow off your concerns. Now THAT is what healthcare should be. They not only deal with general healthcare, but specialized as well and have loads of resources for support groups, referrals, family planning, you name it. Surprisingly well stocked for a myriad of different quandries afflicting both the homeless and low-income! I thought this was a place to get the homeless housing, but they offer chiropractors, acupuncture, yoga lessons, primary care providers, and health insurance. The only reason a star has been deducted is because they have no dedicated mental health service on the premises, but they really are a surprisingly well-rounded assortment of services for those in need. read more

It's really sad if a clinic that boasts of being a trans-friendly environment continuously gets their patients pronouns wrong when the information is clearly indicated on the patient file and has been brought up numerous times in the past with absolutely no intent to resolve the issue in question. It also makes me incredibly uncomfortable to go to a clinic to get a diagnosis for flu-like symptoms and the most that's done is have my temperature taken with, as the person that checked me in described, a thermometer that only works half the time, and then proceeded to inform me that the thermometer that ACTUALLY works was stolen. Not to mention being told that test results were lost by what I can only describe as irresponsible staff members. Test results for blood work that I took time out of my day to go down there to give. You're meant to feel safe when you go see the doctor and this is what I got instead. It'd be great if the people working here stopped treating patients like this was the only job that they were able to get. I'm not a secondhand citizen and I don't deserve to be treated like one. It's hard enough trying to find a clinic that you will feel safe at and know you'll be listened to and cared for and unfortunately Outside In is one of the only ones that caters to trans individuals, so I'm stuck with it. But the people that work here act as if it were the only place that would hire them and I'm there to shoulder their grief. That's not cool. read more

Outside In is an amazing resource for the community. Sliding scale quality healthcare should be the norm. Till then Outside In fills the niche of affordable health car for those who can't afford health care. The staff are respectful and friendly and the waits don't take that much time. The nurses are students at the Oregon College of Natural Medicine and are well trained by the doctors who volunteer at the facility as well. They take a more holistic approach and when necessary suggest a more natural cure along with the traditional. There are a few walk in clinics available and the prices are always inexpensive/ negotiable. read more

If you have good health insurance and are in need of abused women's services don't try here. They say they want donations but when someone with money to spend wants help, they'll turn you away. And believe me I know how disheartening that can be when it's hard to just talk about what's bothering you. Everyone was completely polite and professional but the social worker must've repeated to me ten times 'You have such good insurance, I don't see why you don't go somewhere else' I said to the Dr. that I had been through something pretty bad. I don't understand that, aren't their services as good as anyone else's or do they consider more expensive help, better help. It's a shame, my LA Doc suggested I try shelters for services that she thought would help and I was happy to consider their service equal to anywhere else. They even seemed to have just handouts and a poster or two that would've helped me a bit but I was only offered acupuncture, chiropractic and free yoga that was 'all over Portland.' I can't say why. I originally asked for a counselor to evaluate me and to have Dr. Brinson as my PCP. I'm giving 3 stars because the reception staff and waiting are was fine, they might be good to their less-insured clients and I hate to doc a non-profit. But being marginalized by those who are suppose to help the marginalized by means of class discrimination, as with any discrimination, deeply offends me. It should've offended them. I'm giving them the charity they didn't want to give me. With 3 stars you can keep your average up, but the details are still available. read more

Outside In is terrific! I went today, and was seen and out the door within 3 hours (and that included about 45 minutes of time with the Naturopathic Doctor students!). It's a queer-friendly, trans-friendly place, with people who really seemed to give a dammn! (I'm not sure if Doctors on Duty exists around here, but with Outside In, I won't bother finding out) The whole visit (wellness check-up, physical exam and immunization) cost me $10. DO arrive at or before the beginning of the walk in time, as it'll make your chances of getting seen promptly much better. Calling beforehand would be good, too, as their hours are a little irregular (most weekdays at 8:30, 1pm Mondays and Wednesdays, and two days a week at 5:30). The aim at serving folks 30 and under, and and homeless folks of any age. I'm not sure what services they are able to offer for folks outside of that demographic. read more

I am without insurance and have had pre-existing medical conditions prior to moving to Portland. I had no idea where I was going to go to be able to refill my medications for a reasonable cost and was amazed to learn that they provide office visits, prescriptions and plenty of other resources for people without medical insurance. The staff puts up with a lot! I've been visiting for over a year now and they are always friendly, helpful and patient. Always understanding and always welcoming. They tend to get your hopes up on waiting lists then let you down 6 months later by ethier quitting they're job or denying you housing after waiting. This place will not help you with housing if your a single male. They will however help with showers food hygiene supplies Laundry and bus tickets once you get a councler. read more

I feel lucky cause my primary care doctor actually listens and considers what i'm going through before coming up with a solution, i'm a transgender man and testosterone wasn't helping me at all, anyways i decided to try to change to a birth control that would stop my period. Of course they pulled the "we have no open appointments for months but you can get a same day appointment" like ??? Okay so you're totally booked but somehow have space for same day appointments super fucked up, i'm a regular patient and can't usually make it there between the call and appointment if its same day cus of my distance or work schedual. When i agreed to the same day appointment it wasn't with my primary doctor and the woman working with me judged me for being a transgender guy who wanted birth control????? I honestly was really upset because i had to make another appointment anyways because she refused to offer me any options for birth control and kept discouraging it til i saw my primary doctor who did the IUD that day. It wasn't my problem it was the doctors. Sometimes the phone disconnects constantly. AND BE WARY!!! I've had people on the phone tell me my appointment was at a time and to be there at that time you have to be 10 minutes early or more or they will act all rude i got there on the dot for my appointment and the woman behind the front desk was fucking around on her computer and when she looked up she went "ohhh im sorry its like 12:01 so we can't take you for your appointment you'll have to wait til 5pm. Okay and i was NOT having it i literally started bawling and demanded a managers opinion, how could i walk in, at 12;00 and fucking because the woman at the desk wants to take her sweet time addressing me i suddenly can't have my appointment? Yeah right you got me fucked up if u think that, i was so glad that the manager told her that i deserve to have my appointment or i probably never would have gone back They also have alot of resources for lgbtq patients but dont really know everything, they didnt even know my primary care doctor could write me a referral for top surgery and tried telling me i HAVE to see a therapist for it. Yes, it's great that Outside In exists, and it is a great resource for the community, but in my unfortunate experience, you get what you pay for- absolutely nothing. Clearly Dr. Hutchinson did not take the Hippocratic Oath, seeing as he turned me away with no medication for my severe COPD/asthma other than two inhalers which I told him are not enough and do not work. He tried to convince me that my oxygen levels are fine, judging on the device put on your finger (don't know the name). My oxygen levels are NOT fine when I can't walk 10 feet without almost collapsing. There is nothing more frustrating than having a doctor not listen or believe you, and ultimately not help you. I've been frustrated by similar things on a much smaller scale, but never with a life threatening illness I've been hospitalized for many times in the past, and now will inevitably be hospitalized for again. At least in the ER they hopefully have competent medical professionals who actually want to help their patients. Thanks for nothing. read more

Outside in is a uniquely valuable health option for low income and the homeless. Because of their mission, which is to serve those living on the edge, they are supportive in a way that regular providers are not. To be poor in America is hard. They treat people with respect regardless of their income. If you are in a position where you feel that you can't afford health care try Outside In. When I have had no other way to address health concerns they have been there to help. The providers have been consistently compassionate, knowledgeable and effective. While I personally can't wait for the day when we have single payer universal healthcare for all, until that time Outside In is the place to go. read more

They've also been amazingly helpful in liaising with me (+ others who volunteer with various forms of outreach) to ensure accurate + effective resource referrals.
