    Cupcakes!
    Kim G.

The sign in the window "Life continues after brain injury" nestled amongst pedestal plates filled with cupcakes caught my attention. While the cupcakes, bars and cookies are amazingly delicious on their own, learning the backstory made them even better. Sarah Bellum's Bakery is staffed with people who have suffered a brain injury. This non profit gives them an opportunity to gain back skills while being productive and learning a trade. Speech and pathology students work along side the survivors as part of their vocational training. Fabulous concept! One cupcake at a time, they are also raising awareness Of brain injury. and the cupcakes are fabulous! And everyone can enjoy them. There are cupcakes made with gluten; some gluten free; some vegan. Everyone working there is trained not to cross contaminate so no danger of someone who absolutely can not eat gluten getting gluten. My friend who was with me is gluten free and she was so excited to have so many cupcake options, especially one where the cake is moist and delicious. The cupcakes come in regular and mini sizes so you can try several flavors or go for a mini if you are watching calories. The vanilla cake with salted caramel was my fave! Chocolate chocolate also a winner. Oh, and they have pup-cakes for your dog! Now that's cute. Definitely stop by this amazing bakery and enjoy some cupcakes knowing that your purchase goes towards helping survivors regain entry into the workforce after a brain injury. March is brain injury awareness month so make it a point to visit.

    Best. Cupcakes. Ever.

LOVED this place so much, I wish I could give them 10 stars! My friend was x the street buying a greeting card, so I stopped in on a whim. I was surprised and DELIGHTED with the GF choices: Lavender Lemon and Chocolate Chip. Naturally, I needed to try one of each, and got one for my friend too. THEY EVEN HAD PUP CAKES - for the doggos! We LOVE that this is a non-profit featuring workers with acquired brain injuries; it took us a minute to figure out the clever shop name. They said we could order custom sheets cakes, I think with about a week's notice (?). In any case, the cakes were absolutely DELISH and this shop is an absolute GEM. Can't praise it enough.

I had dinner reservations at a nearby restaurant and stumbled across this quaint little bakery as I saw a sign advertising gluten free and vegan desserts. My husband eats plant based so of course I had to check it out. The person behind the counter was so pleasant and accommodating. She shared that the bakery is a non-profit bakery supporting people with brain injuries. What a great cause - how could I not support this bakery!! I ended getting the vegan lemon crinkle cookie and the vegan banana cake. The lemon crinkle cookie was my favorite of the two. I took them home and my husband gobbled them up in one sitting (he hadn't eaten dinner yet)!

I tell you what, I don't even like cupcakes or any kind of cake, but I love these! They are firm and moist, and the frosting is not too sweet. The flavors are buoyant and taste like they were made from an Artisan recipe. For my family, we like the mini sized cupcakes. My son puts the whole mini cupcake - frosting first in his mouth. Beyond the usual expected sweet cupcake fare, there are gluten free, and savory cupcakes to pique your interest. They also have lemon bars and brownies, for diversity of tastes, and PUP cakes for dogs. I love the name Sarah Bellum's, and what they stand for. Sarah Bellum's is a non-profit, social enterprise bakery that supports adults with acquired brain injury (ABI), helping them to return to work, play, and life through baking. What a great idea! Volunteers can apply, whether they have a brain injury or not. Their cupcakes are available at New Seasons Market in Beaverton and other locations. Check out their hours before you arrive. As of this writing, they are open Friday: 3pm to 6pm Saturday: 11am to 5pm Sunday: 11am to 4pm Best time to come is on Sundays when there's more parking.

Wow I cannot rave enough about the GF/V Triple Chocolate cupcakes!! They were fresh, soft, & decadent- all while being gluten free & vegan. They stayed fresh for over a week too! 10/10!

Stumbled upon this amazing bakery! With an awesome message "changing lives one cupcake at a time." What does that mean?!?! Besides the delicious cupcakes, it's a non-profit training shop for those acquire brain injury, there staff were super friendly, and it's Kosher! That just means that they aren't excluding anyone.

This has been our go to cupcake place for over three years. This is an amazing way to get back to the community while also indulging in some wonderfully handcrafted good. The pricing is fair and you are contributing to people who have had brain injuries getting their fine motor skills back. These are the most amazing cupcakes I've ever had in my life.

Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. (5/5) Twisted Croissant certainly does some some really delectable treats. It's one of my favorite bakeries in Portland!

Crispy, airy, buttery and oh, so delicate, my raspberry cruffin was the dessert dreams are made of! If you've never had a cruffin... what are you waiting for?! It's croissant dough baked into a muffin shape. And the particular version I ordered today was filled with sweet and creamy vanilla custard and raspberry jelly. My mouth is watering describing this now, a true sign I'll be returning to experience this delicacy time and time again. There are three locations of Twisted Croissant in Portland, and this is the only one I've visited. The interior has a classic Parisian bakery vibe, clad in white subway tile from floor to ceiling. The bakery case in front of the store is beautifully stocked with fresh pastries, perfect for enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea. However, be advised, there are only two tables in the back of their public space, so it's not particularly inviting space to sit and enjoy your breakfast. Given the location, I assume there is outdoor seating in the summer months, but don't quote me on that. Regardless, run here if you haven't been. These baked goods are worth the visit!
