The blue sign is part of Florida's Historical Marker Program, one of the Division of Historical Resources' most popular public history initiatives. These markers commemorate significant people, places, and events throughout the state and can be found along roadways, at archaeological sites, battlefields, cemeteries, churches, colleges, historic districts, schools, and other historic landmarks. Historic Marker F-589 was erected in 2006 by the Brevard County Historical Commission and the Florida Department of State. Oliver's Camp was named for the Oliver family who moved from Missouri to this area of the Turnbull Hammock in the early 1870s. They vast timberlands and citrus groves and their main camp located on the land where Chain of Lakes Park now stands. In 1886, L.C. Oliver founded a lumber business in Titusville, selling Georgia pine lumber, shingles, and other building supplies. Two years later, he expanded the business and purchased a half interest in the Budge & Huckabay Hardware Store, renaming it Oliver & Budge Hardware & Lumber. By the mid-1890s, Oliver and his business partner, Budge, had relocated to Miami to establish another hardware and lumber business. Budge eventually purchased Oliver's remaining interest in the Titusville store and, in 1898, sold it to his father-in-law, Captain J. Pritchard. The business then became James Pritchard and Son Hardware. In 1918, Oliver and his wife, Louise, sold their 40-acre Turnbull Hammock property to Florida Senator J.J. Parrish and his wife, Emma, for $15,000. Parrish was one of Florida's largest citrus growers and a prominent businessmen during the early 20th century. The property included a two-story Craftsman-style home, built around 1910, which Parrish used as the residence for his grove caretaker. Years later, Brevard County purchased the property and developed it into Chain of Lakes Regional Park. The historic Oliver's Camp House was originally slated to become a museum showcasing the region's pioneer history. Unfortunately, by the time plans were made to relocate the house, it had deteriorated beyond the point where it could be safely moved. As a result, the structure was demolished in 2023, bringing an end to one of the area's last links to its early settlement. Today all that remains of the pioneering spirit of the Oliver Camp is this historic marker.

These markers commemorate significant people, places, and events throughout the state and can be found along roadways, at archaeological sites, battlefields, cemeteries, churches, colleges, historic districts, schools, and other historic landmarks. Historic Marker F-602 was erected in 2007 by the Brevard County Tourist Development Council and the Florida Department of State. The marker tells the story of an ambitious engineering project that ultimately failed. In 1911, Edgar W. Ellis, J. H. Beckwith, and a consortium of developers founded the Titusville Fruit and Farm Lands Company after acquiring 22,500 acres of marshland in the western portion of the old Delespine Grant. Their goal was to drain the wetlands and transform them into agricultural land. By 1913, crews using heavy earthmoving equipment previously employed in the excavation of the Panama Canal had completed 43 miles of parallel drainage canals. They then began work on a main canal that would connect them, divert floodwaters from the St. Johns River to the Indian River through Addison Creek, and create a navigable waterway for transporting crops to market at Addison Point. What the developers failed to anticipate was the coquina rock ridge that lay beneath the landscape. Their excavation machinery was unable to cut through the hard rock, and without completing the main canal, the entire venture collapsed financially. Ultimately, the project's failure helped preserve the land in its natural state. In the 1990s, the property was designated for conservation, and on August 27, 1999, Enchanted Forest officially opened to the public as the first property acquired under Brevard County's Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program. Today, visitors can explore a landscape where northern temperate and southern subtropical ecosystems meet. The overgrown remnants of the century old canals are still visible throughout the preserve and have been recognized as a Florida Heritage Site, serving as a lasting reminder of a engineering vision that nature ultimately reclaimed.

The marker is part of Florida's Historical Marker Program, one of the Division of Historical Resources' most recognizable public history initiatives. These markers commemorate significant people, places, and events throughout the state and can be found along roadways, at archaeological sites, battlefields, cemeteries, colleges, historic districts, schools, and churches like this one. Historical Marker F-540 was erected in 2005 by the Brevard County Historical Commission and the Florida Department of State. Pioneer settler Tom Johnson Cockshutt arrived in the area in 1868, donated the land, and founded LaGrange Church in 1869. It is the oldest Protestant church on Florida's East Coast between St. Augustine and Key West. Originally built as a simple log cabin, the church also served as the first school in Brevard County and as a community gathering place. In 1893, the original structure was replaced with the picturesque Carpenter Gothic style church that stands today. Its pointed steeple and beautiful stained-glass windows caught my eye and are an example of the architectural style. Adjacent to the church is a historic cemetery where many of the area's founding families are buried, including Col. Henry C. Titus, the man for whom the town of Titusville was named. The church was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 7, 1995. I always enjoy discovering historic churches like this. If only the walls could talk, imagine the stories they would tell after more than 150 years. It's definitely worth stopping for a look and a few photos if you're in the Titusville area.

While I am very familiar with the blue markers of the state wide Florida Historical Marker Program,…read moreoccasionally I will come across a county or city historic marker. On a recent walk through Overlook Park on Lake Jessup, I discovered that Seminole County has their own historic marker program. Historic markers are a great way to learn about the formative people, buildings, and events in a town's history. This marker was erected by Seminole County and recounts the history of White's Wharf at Clifton Springs. Just north of this spot, in 1765-1766 John and William Bartram discovered the springs during a search for the source during their excursion up the Saint Johns River. They set up camp next to the warm sulfur springs. The swampy shoreline of Lake Jessup became the site of at least three wharves and trading posts just after the Civil War. In the late 1870's, W.G. White built a store at this spot. White employed six clerks and traded with buyers who came by wagon and ox cart from all parts of Central Florida and as far south as Fort Christmas. Settlers gave meat, hides, and plumes from wild birds in exchange for flour, grits, cane syrup, molasses, rice, medicines, cloth, and hardware. White also owned a nearby grove that supplied his wharf. White's Wharf became an important stop for anyone traveling on the St. John River and those in the new city of Oviedo. The campground at White's Wharf became a community gathering place for church picnics until the 1950's. The site also became known as Clifton Springs, in honor of the hometown in New York of Dr. Henry Foster, a wealthy grower who spent winters at Lake Charm in Oviedo. In 1882, White formed the Lake Jessup Steamboat Company with the local postmaster and another merchant. The men purchased the Isis, a stern-wheeler that hauled fruit from the grove across the lake to the St. Johns and north to Jacksonville which boosted the popularity of Clifton Springs. The Isis eventually sank in Lake George during a bad storm, killing three crewman. The Lake Jessup Steamboat Company soon disbanded after the ship was destroyed. In the 1800's White moved his business to Orlando to take advantage of the railroads being built in Central Florida. In the early 2000's, Seminole County claimed this land and renamed White's Wharf to Overlook Park and opened it to the public. The park is surrounded by two sulfur springs, one to the east and one to the west. There is a picnic pavilion and a boardwalk on Lake Jessup for fishing.

These markers highlight important people and places throughout Florida. They can be found along roads, battlefields, cemeteries, churches, colleges, historic districts, schools, historic buildings, and at archaeological site like this one. This marker tells the story of the Windover Archaeological Site, one of the most important archaeology finds ever made in Florida. Marker F-486 was installed in 2002 by the Brevard County Historical Commission and the Florida Department of State. In 1982, a bulldozer was excavating a pond for a new housing development when a backhoe operator noticed several human skulls in the bucket of his machine. It was quickly determined that they belonged to an ancient Indigenous people who had lived in the area thousands of years ago. Archaeologists ultimately recovered the remains of 168 individuals from the peat at the bottom of the pond. The peat created extraordinary preservation conditions, protecting not only the skeletons but also soft tissues, including some brain matter. Researchers at Florida State University studied the remains, yielding a wealth of new information about Florida's earliest inhabitants. Textiles recovered from the burials provided rare insights into ancient weaving techniques, while preserved gut contents offered valuable clues about their diet. One of the most remarkable discoveries was the skeleton of a young man born with spina bifida. Because his spinal cord developed outside his spinal column, he was likely paralyzed from birth. Evidence suggests that his community cared for him throughout his life until he died from an infection at around 15 years of age, offering a glimpse into the compassion and social bonds of these ancient people. In recognition of its extraordinary importance, the Windover Archaeological Site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. To learn much more about this fascinating discovery, visit the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science, which features a comprehensive exhibit on the site. If you visit the archaeological site itself, however, all you'll find is this historical marker.

I found this marker in front of the Sanford Museum dedicated to Sanford founder, Henry Shelton Sanford. Marker F-5 was installed in 1961 by the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials. You can learn more about Henry Sanford in the museum behind this marker. Henry Sanford was born in Woodbury, Connecticut, on June 15, 1823. In 1847 Sanford began his long distinguished career as a diplomat as an attaché and Secretary of the American Legation at St. Petersburg. He was also the United States Ambassador to Belgium under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. In 1870, Sanford purchased 23 square acres of land west of Mellonville, Florida, through the Sanford Grant from Spain. He planned a new city that he called The Gate City of South Florida, which he believed would become the transportation hub for Florida. In 1877, the City of Sanford was incorporated, and Mellonville was annexed six years later. In 1880, while he was in Europe as a U.S. minister, he formed a land company in London to encourage investments in Sanford. That same year construction began on the South Florida Railroad with a terminus in Sanford. By 1884, Sanford was a prosperous town with wharves, a railroad station, and a large hotel. Sanford traveled the world for the U.S. government and wherever he went, he bought seeds and plants to send back to Florida for his groves. The first was St. Gertrude's Grove. The second and more successful was Belair, a citrus grove and experimental garden near his residence in Sanford. More than 30,000 exotic trees from South America and Africa were planted at the gardens, mostly by Swedish immigrants who settled at nearby New Upsala. His young manager, James Ingraham, moved from Ohio in 1874 to help relieve his wife's tuberculosis. At the time it was the largest grove in the state. Sanford experimented with more than 140 varieties of citrus plantings which led to the production of new quality citrus fruits including the Jaffa, Mediterranean Sweet, Villa Francean and the Valencia orange, Carefully constructed experiments were implemented to determine what would grow best in Florida's climate. By 1889, Sanford had extended his farm to over 400 acres with approximately 145 acres of orange and lemon groves, along with a small nursery. All of the plants were tested to determine if Florida citrus growers could introduce new varieties into the blossoming citrus market. While experiments which were conducted to satisfy Sanford's own curiosity, they had the added bonus of benefitting the agricultural interests of the United States. Sanford and his family's last trip to Belair Grove was in the winter of 1890-1891. They returned to Healing Springs, Virginia, where he passed away on May 21, 1891. His wife, Gertrude, sold the Florida property to the Chase Brothers, who had moved to Florida in 1878 and started working with Sanford. During the winter of 1894-1895, a severe freeze destroyed that year's entire crop. Many citizens faced economic ruin and left the area. Those who stayed turned the artesian wells into a subirrigation system that permitted commercial agriculture. By the first decade of the 20th century, Sanford was one of the largest vegetable shipping centers in the United States. The Gate City of South Florida then became known as Celery City after its most successful crop.

The marker could use a refresh but it reads: "In this vicinity, Henry Shelton Sanford, pioneer citrus grower, established the St. Gertrude grove in 1871. There, and at his Belair grove and experimental gardens, he advanced the industry through development of some 140 types of citrus. The Sanford gardens experimented with other tropical fruits, planting 30,000 exotic trees from South America and Africa. Much of the labor in the groves was performed by Swedish immigrants who settled at nearby New Upsala."

The historic Pritchard House stands adjacent to the Titusville Welcome Center. On front of it a…read moreblue historical marker commemorates its significance. The marker is part of Florida's Historical Marker Program, one of the Division of Historical Resources' most recognizable public history initiatives. These markers honor important people, places, and events throughout the state and can be found at archaeological sites, battlefields, historic districts, schools, churches, cemeteries, and notable buildings such as this one. Historical Marker F-558 was erected in 2005 by the Brevard County Historical Commission and the Florida Department of State. Captain James Pritchard, a Confederate soldier who served in the Army of Missouri during the Civil War, purchased this property from Mary Titus in 1891. Mary and her husband, Colonel Henry Titus, are credited with giving Titusville its name. Pritchard hired Pleasant J. Hall, the builder of nearby St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, to construct this elegant Queen Anne-style home from durable heart pine. Captain Pritchard, his wife Mary, his mother-in-law Frances Delespine Boye, and his children, Boud and Kate, were the home's first residents. After Captain Pritchard's death in 1926, he was laid to rest in Oaklawn Cemetery. His son Boud and Boud's wife, Lola Pauline Smith, affectionately known as "Miss Lovie" continued to live in the home for many years. Today, the Pritchard House looks remarkably similar to how it appeared when it was first built. The first floor features an entrance hall, staircase, a formal parlor, and a dining room. Originally, the kitchen was separated from the main living area by an open passageway that has since been enclosed with a side entrance. A narrow staircase leads from the kitchen to the former maid's room above. The second floor contains four bedrooms with built-in closets, although only the master bedroom has access to the balcony. The passage connecting the main house to the maid's room was later converted into a bathroom, where water was supplied from a cistern below through a hand pump. Many original features remain intact, including the four fireplaces with their tiled hearths and the beautiful entrance hall light fixture. After arriving in Florida, Captain Pritchard initially grew sugarcane and citrus before turning his attention to real estate and business. He organized Titusville's first bank in 1888 and served as its president. In 1890, he built the city's first electric generating plant, which was later sold to Florida Power & Light. He also owned the James Pritchard and Son Hardware Store, making him one of Titusville's most influential early businessmen. The Pritchard House was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 12, 1990. Captain Pritchard's granddaughter, Mary Pritchard, continued living in the home until Brevard County purchased the property in May 2005 with the stipulation that it be restored in its original location and be used as a Living History House Museum otherwise it would be returned to the Pritchard family. Tours are by appointment only and the house can be rented for private events like weddings. Several events open to the public take place throughout the year. Queen Anne architecture has always been my favorite residential style. I love how it evokes a Gingerbread house with its intricate details, asymmetrical design, and elegance. Seeing the beautifully preserved Pritchard House in person was a highlight of my visit to historic Titusville.

During…read morethe Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs, countless astronauts, engineers, technicians, and aerospace workers called the city home. Today, is known as one of the best places in Florida to experience rocket launches, with spectacular views from its waterfront parks. Approximately 50,000 people live in Titusville, a city known for its rich history, nature, and space exploration. The city maintains 27 parks offering everything from playgrounds and sports fields to scenic riverfront walks and nature trails. Popular destinations include Sand Point Park, Space View Park, Fox Lake Park, and Enchanted Forest Sanctuary. In charming downtown Titusville you can explore historic buildings, unique shops, and restaurants. Visitors should not miss the American Space Museum & Walk of Fame, the U.S. Space Walk of Fame, the restored 1891 Pritchard House, and the North Brevard Historical Museum. I love that there is free parking offered at the Welcome Center and they are always happy to direct you to your next adventure. No visit would be complete without experiencing one of Titusville's most iconic restaurants, Dixie Crossroads. Serving guests since 1983, this family owned seafood restaurant is famous for its wild-caught rock shrimp and its complimentary powdered sugar-dusted corn fritters, a Space Coast tradition. When visiting Titusville you can discover prehistoric history, Victorian architecture, the Space Race, and beautiful waterfront scenery. Come for a rocket launch, history museums, and a walk along the Indian River. While Titusville lives in the shadow of the Kennedy Space Center, there is so much more below the surface worth discovering.

During a mini vacay, we wanted to check out the progress of Titusville over the last ten years…read moresince our last visit where we ate lunch at the iconic Dixie Crossroads. Drove toward downtown from I-95 and was shocked that the area has basically halted in any commercial improvements on Garden Street which is the main thoroughfare. The few dilapidated homes littered with outside junk also did not help with the dull ambiance. The westside of Titusville really needs some updated infastructure. With that said, the east side historic area was absolutely magnificent. Visited a few historic Titusville landmarks and loved the Indian River Lagoon surrounding the Max Brewer Bridge watching the boats pass under was a game changer. Relaxed in the Sand Point Park along the Indian River.
