Not sure if it's just the day I went but I ended up waiting well over an hour for my order of 8/4 white oak and some 3/4 walnut ply. Unlike other lumberyards you can't pick your own boards, which makes sense from a safety perspective, but it was frustrating to wait 45 minutes, and in order to be able to make the panel glueup I needed, I ended up being brought twice as many board feet as I originally wanted. It's hard not to end up with extra, but had I been able to pick my own boards I think I would have at least saved some as opposed to paying $150 extra for white oak I didn't budget for. I will absolutely go back for the walnut ply -- it was a great price and delivered to my car cleanly. If I know I need a certain amount of wood and I just need it to be high quality, I'll price compare between here and the other hardwood dealer down the street. read more

Good quality wood, but inconsistent service. Went here twice now. First time I bought 1 4x8 sheet of maple that they chopped into 8, 1'x4' boards, for which they charged me something like $30. I was happy with that. Fast forward 3 weeks to today: I went in to buy the same thing in Red Oak and had this conversation. Me: Can I get one sheet of 3/4" Red Oak? Them: Sure Me: Can you chop it up for me? Them: No. That's a 24 hour process. Me: That's fine. Them: Here's your ticket. Take it to the window and they'll bring it out for you. Me: Don't you want to know the measurements of the cuts? Them: We cant do that. It's a 24 hour process. Me: That's ok. I can wait. Them: [Sigh]...What do you want it chopped up into? Me: Just 8, 1'x4' boards Them: We cant do that. We only cut for transport. Me: You did it for me a few weeks ago. Them: Yeah, well, we're short-staffed. Not like I'm asking for anything complicated or unreasonable. This leads me to assume they just don't care about catering to hobbyists and DIYers. The quality and variety of wood is great, but they don't necessarily care about your business. I'll be going to the Plywood Company in Fort Worth from now on. read more

I'm not sure why her name is but the lady that handles payments is always super friendly and a good conversationalist while customers wait for their order. Highly recommend! read more

Have been a loyal customer for several years and purchase about $10,000/annually. They delivered an $1800 order with several 8/4 boards that could pass for bananas (nowhere close to straight). I would be lucky to get 4/4 out of them after milling. Called company and they offered to replace but took them a week to do so and charged me $60 for it. Look elsewhere for your lumber like Brazos Forest Products. What happened to treating the loyal customer right read more

We have gone to Central Hardwoods for homasote board 3 times. We only buy 1 sheet at a time. They have always been helpful, courteous and polite. I do wish they would cut it in half for me to make it easier to get it home. But we cut it ourselves in their parking lot. Well, my husband does. I have looked around a little bit there and they have some beautiful wood!!!! Highly recommend this place! One of the few places in Dallas that carry homasote board and good prices. read more

Okay, the bad reviews made me delay going to this place for a long time. That's my loss because this place is great. I called ahead and spoke to a very courteous and knowledgeable gentleman about the wood I was considering purchasing. I let him know I am a hobbyist woodworker and the order would be relatively small. He assured me that I my business is very welcome. Without hesitation he gave me board foot prices for three thicknesses on two species plus plywood pricing too. The prices are as good as it gets in Dallas. Decided to go take a look (today's date is 06/24/2019). I was greeted by two people working the desk and when my turn came I asked how the system worked. To summarize, you place an order and take the pull ticket to the warehouse, forklift brings a huge stack to choose from and helps you pick each piece and helps load it. In my case I was buying 90 BF of 4/4 rough cut cherry and the load out was 3 board ft more than I initially ordered and they adjusted the pull ticket accordingly. This is fine with me. I also bought a sheet of 1/4" cherry plywood and once again a stack was brought on a forklift and I chose the one I wanted. So I just don't understand the bellyaching. Friendly and knowledgeable employees, good prices, and the wood I bought exceeded my quality expectations. While this is not a go browse and think about it kind of place, it is a very good full service lumber yard. If you know what you want to purchase I highly recommend this place. read more

I am continuing to use them for my lumber as a large scale hobby woodworker. I have to say the lumber they have is consistently very accurate to the grade and so far the prices are comparable to the area and industry. So I have with time been able to give them a five star rating. This is not a Rockler or woodcraft setup where you can check out each piece and buy what you want, this is not the place you want. If you need a lot of wood for your larger piece or are a pro this is more the place to go. There's a need and use for each type of place, I just don't want people to get all excited as they head out to a five star wood place to find that they don't really have any wood until your pay for it and load it. But I have never had any problem exchanging wood that was not in my opinion of the grade marked etc. read more

After making a 40 minute trip to which I thought would be a lumber yard, I came back home disappointed and empty handed. The guy in the front desk was helpful and gave me good info, I felt that he did that just as part of his job but careless about me buying anything. At the end he told me "we really only cater to cabinet makers and big companies" which reassure me that I was definitely in the wrong place. I was under the impression. Y their website that I was going to be able to pick my own boards and pay at a register like most lumber yards but this place its definitely not for hobbyist or furniture makers. read more

They advertise as a hardwood dealer, yet won't let people even look at the hardwoods before they purchase them. They direct you to a "display of the woods we stock". If you build furniture you want to pick your own lumber so you get the character you are looking for. I called to place an order and they finished the order almost two weeks late. I called on the original due date to find they had not even started to work on my order. One week later I called again and they were rude about looking up my order status. I hope this is not a normal procedure for them. I will not be giving them any business in the future. read more

I almost decided not to go because all the poor reviews. But they had the wood I needed at a reasonable price, so I went, picked up what I needed, quickly and efficiently, with courteous service, and have been back several times since. I think many of the poor reviews are because many customers (these days) are accustomed to picking out each and every piece they want, like you can do at some smaller 'boutique' operations, or at the big box stores. Historically, however, before the advent of the big box stores, many/most lumber yards would not let you go into the stacks on your own, or at least unaccompanied. And, when I visited, they did offer to bring out the wood to the front of the warehouse, and allow me to choose the sheets I wanted before loading, so you can in fact 'browse,' they just ask you to do it after they bring it to the front of the warehouse. My guess is that they're able to have such a wide selection, because they stack it vertically, and thus have many, many grades and types, in a single warehouse. And because it's stacked high--like 20+ feet high--you simply can't see it, or stand there and pick and choose--it all has to be moved by forklift, which in turn means they don't want people walking around between the forklifts. So in general, this place has a very old school feel to it--professional but no nonsense, and certainly no fawning customer service--like you'd expect from the big box stores on their good days, but also no clueless responses--like you'd also expect from the big box stores on every day. So from a customer service/interaction perspective, that may not sit well with some weekend DIYers, or maybe even high-end craftsmen, but it works well for me, and I'll continue to purchase from them. read more

Stopped in at Central Hardwoods today hoping to speak with someone about recommendations for selecting the right hardwood for a project. Not only was the older guy at the front desk NOT helpful, I really felt as if he was bothered by my presence. If you only want to sell to big $ wholesale buyers, then don't advertise that you are open to the public. "Being helpful" is NOT handing a new customer an inventory sheet and pointing to the sample rack in the lobby. As a woodworker I was hoping to find a local hardwoods dealer that I could rely on for all my purchases. Now I know I will be looking elsewhere. read more

Went to Central looking for a hardwood supplier after moving to Dallas from Chicago. They have everything a shop would need but the people working in the mill shop have no clue about what they are doing. I ordered rift white oak surfaced both sides to use for cabinet doors and the first order I received was skip planned on one side and not even remotely useable for what I needed to do. They agreed to re-run my order and promised it would be right the second time, only problem was I had to reload the first order and bring it back and pick up the second load. After Chase promised the second load was right and he made sure it was I returned to my shop to unload it and find half of it was still unusable for doors because the person running the planer doesn't know what surfaced two sides means. While trying to start and establish a business dealing with them would cause me to close the doors before even getting going. Moral of the story is do not buy anything that goes through their mill shop. read more
