I visited 6 nurseries in Rhode Island over the past two weeks to select and price products for my landscaping project. The staff at Central Nurseries was by far the most helpful and knowledgeable. I visited 3 times before buying product and everyone was helpful and engaging each time I visited. Alyssa, Joe, Tracey, Jane and Bonnie were very helpful. The product selection was better than the other locations I visited; pricing was comparable. I will be back for more product soon. Good customer service is hard to find these days. Their products are great but their customer service sucks!!!! I thought my project was a fairly large project, close to $10,000 and I had the worse response to everything I requested. Everything was dragged out over and over and they would never keep me informed. I left message after message and could not get a response and then when I finally persisted and did get a message, it was the same thing over and over....promises, promises, promises. Boy has this place has deteriorated since my 2018 review. I think there has been a lot of turnover, and it shows. I've found that about 60% of the staff in recent times are kids who will say something like "sorry, I've only had this job for a week, I don't know where anything is or really anything about plants" which is sort of endearing. The 40% who are longer tenured will, more often than not, confidently offer information that's completely wrong. If you show up having done some research, they'll get a little rude and gaslight-y if you volunteer it and it conflicts with their incorrect knowledge. The misinformation can be pretty material. For example, a couple years ago, one of the staff insisted that beach plums are self-fertile and suggested some theories for why the one they'd sold me was not fruiting. Turns out that beach plums are dioecious and you need at least two to get fruit. It had fruited the season I'd bought it because it had been pollinated by its neighbors at the nursery. I bought my neighbor a mate for this beach plum last year; as soon as they had a spring together, they started fruiting. Also, their computer systems are atrocious. I tried to source a locally native perennial ground cover that's widely discussed and readily available online. Two trips later, after endlessly dictating Latin spelling as they fight their systems to figure out whether they stock something, I am finally done with Central Nurseries. First visit, I'd naively visited without calling, assuming that they'd have at least one of the species on my shortlist. They said they'd have one of these species on a week or two. This time, I called to confirm stock of that species. The answer was no, we don't carry that, oh wait, I hate this computer, actually yes, we have plenty, come on in. I drove to Johnston to have someone rudely dismiss the request with "Never heard of it. We don't have it." And some rude gaslighting ("What are you talking about, asters aren't ground cover") to top it off. Great. What about those ground-cover asters that I'm planting right now, that I ordered online after firing Central Nurseries? You could do okay here if you show up here to browse. Checkout will be slow, but the plant material still looks decent. Otherwise, I suggest you pass. I'll be interested to know of a RI nursery with a good selection of native stuff and consistently courteous and botanically informed staff. read more

Paul should be proud of his crew because they care and work hard. This morning I was driving down a sidewalk @ Yale and I noticed a fence was setup around several mounds of dirt and sod. Rob noticed me and asked the rest of the crew to help him move everything so I could use the sidewalk. This was amazing because too many landscapers have told me to use the street.Even a couple of cops,in the past,have said use the street. Thanks again Rob. read more

I don't write reviews often, but am so happy with everything about my experience here that I wanted to write a review. I purchased 3 trees here several years ago and spent a lot of time consulting with Alyssa at that time and was very appreciative of her helpfulness, patience, and knowledge. The quality of the trees was great and they've thrived. The pricing was reasonable and the guidance on planting was exceptional. Now I've returned years later looking for trees and shrubs for a much bigger project. I've been consulting with Dave an Alyssa over the course of a few weeks and their service and knowledge is exceptional. They truly want to help ensure you are happy with the final design. They have an enormous selection of high quality trees, shrubs, and basically everything you may want. If they don't have it, they can help you get it (even if you're not quite sure what it is!) Just fantastic. They've been truly outstanding helping with design to acquiring the right plantings, even at the end of the season when things are harder to get. A few weeks ago we came here to look for a tree that would grow in shade and had questions about apple and peach trees. Workers seemed busy with phone orders but we asked a women for help her response was "what I don't have time" so my husband just asked to point us in the right direction and when he was in the middle of asking something else she walked away . As we were leaving after looking around aimlessly for a while we notice her happily helping another women. Today we went back to give them another chance because they do seem to have nice fruit trees we just would like more information. My husband asked a women who was watering the plants for help and she gave him the minimum information. When asked about apple trees she said you need two so he asked what about the ones that have multiple apples on it, she said oh then one. He asked about peach trees and she said they are easy and walked away... extremely disappointed in the service from this place . Ended up going down the street to another place that gave us all the information we could of asked for and then some. read more

I visited Central Nurseries in early April and ordered several 5-6' Rose of Sharon shrubs and a rhododendron to replace some evergreens we had removed from our yard. At that time, I was told a shipment would be coming in "this weekend." We quickly had dig safe over and dug the holes in anticipation of our order. Weeks passed with no word from Central Nurseries. I called periodically and was told they didn't know when the shrubs would arrive and since Rose of Sharon plants develop leaves later in the season, they wait to put them out. I called them every few weeks over the last months with little encouragement. I last talked with them a few weeks ago and was told my plants were "stocked" (I believe that was the wording) such that they were waiting to fill a truck before sending a shipment. I've had no word since from Central and it is now past prime planting time. We have worked very hard on our landscaping over the years and have beautiful mature landscaping. We were planning on having a hedge of flowering plants to enjoy over the summer as a compliment to our other plantings. Instead, we have an eyesore - a dirt bed now overgrown with weeds, several large empty holes, a mound of soil and mulch to be spread. This is what we will be staring at all summer as we will now wait until fall to plant. I would have expected Central to be clear about what they can get me and when. Just honesty. When I look at the other reviews I can't believe they are talking about the same nursery, My experience has been frustrating and negative. Will take my business elsewhere. read more

Central Nurseries has been a RI institution for a very long time. Great quality and variety is in my opinion what sets them a part. Back in 2014 I decided to walk the grounds to see all that they had to offer and honestly the choices were very overwhelming. I had a blank canvas and a ton of area to fill on my property. Thankfully I had the pleasure of meeting one of there employees Alyssa (Greco) Leach and from that initial smile and hello I knew that I had met someone a little bit different. She guided me through the entire process and allowed me to ask questions and gave me the answers I was looking for. Alyssa was not only very informative but also very knowledgeable and passionate about her craft. Alyssa has become a friend that I can call at anytime with any questions about flowers, trees and gardening tips. I was sad to see her go a few years back but was excited to see her flourish as the Grounds and Gardens Supervisor at the Newport Restoration Foundation, Specifically The Doris Duke Mansion at Rough Point. This past year Central Nurseries in my opinion made the best decision by bringing her back as there GM. You can already notice the difference when you drive by and see how beautiful the front and the grounds look. She is someone special and a difference maker. Central Nurseries won the bid for my city's tree planting initiative and have missed their deadline by WEEKS. They are blocking parking, pissing off residents, and when they finally show up, they are doing the project so piecemeal that you think it's a one man operation. Look elsewhere for your landscape contracting needs. read more

Central Nurseries has a large variety of beautiful plants, shrubs, and trees. Their staff was also very helpful in helping me select plants for my yard, particularly Ernie, Michelle, and Felicia.
