I'm a nascent gardener thanks to the pandemic and on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, I decided I'd morph into my dad and take a tour of local garden centers to add to my growing apartment garden. There's a lot of excellent stuff here. Plants are mostly very fresh and well-kept and the variety and pricing is excellent. With that said, it's a nursery so their bottom line is to move product with eye catching displays. If you're buying potted herbs, you'll probably have to repot your herbs sooner rather than later to keep them alive because they do the same thing as grocery stores and throw several seeds into a pot to make bushy, appealing displays. So why the low rating, you ask? The customer service was so lackluster. I hate being 'that' person and I'm not one to make assumptions but it felt like they didn't want to help me at all, for whatever reason. I had to wonder if it's because I don't look like their usual customer. I caught the scent of jasmine and asked the lady upfront where the jasmine was kept. Mind you, I rolled up to the counter with three plants and a saucer already so it was evident that I was a serious customer. She said, "it's the trellised plant on the right." The right being a tent-long table of several plants. I walked over and looked and could not find it. I came back and said I couldn't find the jasmine and she repeated herself and kept sitting there. There was no move to even try to offer more assistance and there was nobody behind me in line either. She just kept sitting. I would have likely bought the jasmine plant had she shown me where it was. I just didn't feel like bothering at that point. I purchased what I had already collected and left. There is no jasmine elsewhere that I could find locally but I'd rather save my business for people who actually want it. I think this place is absolutely worth a try if you fit a certain majority demographic, as it seems other Yelpers have received stellar help and service here. Otherwise, I'd try elsewhere. read more

Went to Jacavone Garden Center for the first time. Located on Atwood Avenue in Johnston, they had so many different plants to choose from. I had a newly made flower garden , that I wanted to fill. I was immediately helped once I got there. The person who helped me knew everything about the plants that I selected. I had a shady and a sunny location, and a partly sunny and shady location. The person that helped me was extremely knowledgeable about all the plants. I came home and planted them, and realized I needed a few more. As soon as I got back there the person that helped me recognize me and guided me on how to fill-in what I had left to plant. I highly recommend Jacavone Garden Center, as they were less money for many plants that I had already purchased at Walmart and Lowe's. Found this lovely gem thanks to Yelp - and want to make sure I continue to spread the word! I mulled around the space, feeling a bit like Alice in Wonderland. All of the colors were so vibrant, and the smells were lovely. People were there purchasing flowers on their lunch break, and retired folk were perusing the isles, planning which plants would be added to their backyard oasis. I'm not going to lie, I was overwhelmed. That's where Connie stepped in. She asked me what I was looking for, and I told her I wanted a pretty pot of flowers for my sunny porch. Nothing to hang, since I doubt we hand hangers, and I sure wasn't going to install those. I needed no drama flowers, bright with color, that would last me through the summer. Together we walked the isles, and she asked me my preference on colors and textures. Before long, she grabbed a pot, threw in some soil, and magically threw my choices beautifully together. In general, I like this garden center and far prefer this to shopping at Home Depot or Lowes for quality and variety of plants. However, we had a bad experience ordering 4 yards of topsoil for our raised beds. I was happy that they offered delivery under 6 yards, and for a reasonable delivery fee. On the phone, we discussed what day and time the soil would be delivered (Saturday around 4pm) and I was told that they would call 1/2 hour before delivering it and if it was raining, they would likely not deliver that day. Well, I left my house at 8:30 am, it drizzled all day, and when I got home at 1pm, there was 4 yards of topsoil getting wet in my driveway with a soggy receipt under a rock on my porch. I got no call, and my neighbors said they delivered it at 9am. Not great communication, and not what we discussed. Now, the worst part, my husband and I were rushing to load all four yards by hand into our raised bed in the rain, which was when we started finding pieces of glass and trash (cellophane, foil, metal chunks) in the soil. The soil was also full of large clay clumps, rocks, and just generally not what you would expect from screened loam. Obviously I didn't spend money on soil for a raised bed in my city yard so I could have the same quality of garbage strewn crap that I already have. I also have a young child and am worried about him getting hurt playing in the garden beds, which sucks, and am worried that I should be testing for lead since who even knows where they pulled this stuff from. I did call Jacavone, and while at first they were apologetic and they said they had had issues with this supplier last year (why are you using them again? and why didn't you quality check if you'd had issues before?) they insisted that I send them photos of the chunks of glass so they could prove to the supplier that there was an issue. It didn't occur to me to save the broken glass, since I have a small child my first concern was getting them safely thrown away, so now apparently I just have to deal with a toxic waste hazard in my yard. Great customer service! They offered no solution or restitution, took my number, and have not called back. Anyway, needless to say, don't recommend and won't go back. read more

Decided to stop in and check out their selection. I Must say they have a good selection of annuals, perennials, vegetable plants, etc. The selection and quality is by far so much better than Home Depot or Lowe's. What made this a 4 not 5 star review is that the employees could be more friendlier. Friendlier as in interacting with the customers. No greeting, asking if I needed help. The only time the cashier spoke to me was when he asked if I wanted a receipt, never thanked me. I work in retail myself as a store manager, simple things like that go a long way. read more

I'm really surprised there aren't a hundred rave reviews on Yelp for this place. First I went to Lowes, then the Ann & Hope garden outlet. Then I found this place. Only 10 minutes west of providence and well worth it. The quality of their plants was unbelievable, everything was so fresh and healthy (unlike, ahem, some other places I tried). Really outstanding selection of flowers, not to mention perennials, shrubs, veggies, herbs, succulents... I literally spent a couple hours just dreamily wandering through their inventory. Plus, it's family run! The owner and her daughter were the ones to ring me up and gave me some helpful pointers on a couple new plants I'm trying this year. SO HAPPY to have found this place, this is what Yelp is really for, finding those gems in the rough. read more

It's pretty hard to find garden centers around here with a large selection of flowers. I remember in California, every other block would be filled with nurseries with plants from all over the world. Not all of them were big but most had variety. Sad to say most of the places I have come to find here are limited in supply or variety. Jacavone was a compromise. Definitely not the largest garden center around but they were they had one of the largest nursery collection around with a fairly good price. I went just at the height of the vegetable planting season as they were just starting to bring out their tomato and vegetable plants. They had varieties upon varieties of tomatoes for very affordable prices. All were very well grown. They also had a fairly decent collection of rose bushes as well and I was looking to get a couple to add to my garden. All in all, not a bad place. I still think that places like Home Depot have a more extensive collection/variety of plants but here you are definitely going to find healthy plants. Drop on by and take a look for yourself. I have been a customer for several years and driven a distance because the plants were good quality. On a recent visit, I purchased several annuals, including four heliotrope. Two died within a week, two did well. All were treated the same, came in at night, soil lightly moist. When I called, the owner was slightly skeptical, noting "mine didn't die" So, I am disappointed with the owner's reaction, especially since I have been going there for so long. read more

I visited the garden shop this past weekend based on their conservative approach to safety during this pandemic. Although they had safety precautions in place, I was surprised to see the employees wearing only one mask. I really thought they would be doubled up. There were no arrows on the floor to keep everyone going in a safe uniformed direction. i expected the shopping carts to be ready for each customer just sanitized like they do in TJMaxx. It should also be a cashless system. Lots of purchases and exchange with money - the virus spreads that way. It wouldn't be a bad idea to play a recording on repeat over a loud speaker just to remind people to stay six feet apart. Other than that, their prices are reasonable. read more

Recently visited the garden center to grab a plant for my mother for Easter. Because the COVID-19 i wasn't sure if they were open until i checked their social media. They seemed to be updated and well on top of the issue, ensuring customers they were taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. I called and got great recommendations over the phone on which plant to get for Sunday. Upon arriving, i spoke to Connie and she remembered talking to me on the phone and had my Easter Lily ready for me to pickup. I was glad to find this garden center. I went 3 or 4 times this year and got plants for my herb garden as well as for some planters. All the plants look healthy and happy, the staff is friendly, and the variety is decent. For me, living in Providence where there aren't a ton of options, this is a definite step up from the quality of the nursery departments at Home Depot and Lowes, but if I had the time, I'd rather head down to South County and go to a place like The Farmer's Daughter. I agree that many items aren't labeled...either the plant itself or the price, but I was always able to ask someone and get a good answer. Huge selection - of pretty annuals. Not much for eye catching perennials, pretty expensive and not everything is labeled with prices or even what the plant is. They did have a huge veggie section, so I might go back for that. We bought a flat of marigolds, 2 half gallon sized ground cover type of flower, 7 pint sized perennials and 2 ornamental grasses for $160. I would guess that to be about $60 more than Home Depot or Lowes. This place has a older man on the cash register this morning who is very out spoken. I came to pick up a previous order plant .he found that to be a problem I could only laugh .I told him I got stuck in traffic yesterday and because they close at 5 PM I could not get there in time ..he came back at me like a lon tone and said we were open till 6.30 ..great so I said the internet says you close at 5 you should change that he got all upset like a two year old .again I could only laugh ..then he kept asking me what the order was I told him I am only the delivery guy I have no idea..at that point he asked me to leave once again I could only laugh ..this poor sole of a working needs to find something else for work rather than with the public because clearly he is making a fool out of himself ..needless to say i could care less i was told to leave his over priced garden shop there are plenty others with happy people who enjoy there customers.. read more

I was looking for beach rose bushes (rosa rugosa) and called a few places before calling Jacavone. They had exactly what I was looking for and at a better price than other places. The person working was friendly and helpful and took the time to text picture me the plants before I made the drive to get them. I get there and the woman working had my order ready and someone was standing by to put it in my car. Again, she was so friendly and helpful with tips about caring for my shrubs. I also ordered mulch while I was there and within an hour it was delivered to my door. While there I picked up a few more things---herbs, etc. Everything looks so healthy and fresh. Yes, like many people, I'm tempted to go to the big box store's garden center. I might save a few bucks but then I smack my forehead and head over to Jacavone - because I remember how beautiful my garden looked last year. When you go to Jacavone it is so well organized that even the most newbie of gardeners will be able to figure out what to plant and where. There are annuals for sun, annual for shade, perennials for shade, perennials for sun and hanging plants for every location. The people who work there are well-informed and more than happy to share their knowledge with you. Today I asked where a coupe of specific plants were located and the staffer immediately recognized that I was looking for drought-resistant plants that could sit in the sun all day. She pointed me in the right direction and then added where I could find a few other plants that would also work perfectly for me. Jacavone has the plants you will NEVER find at that big box store. And by the way, their plants are healthy and full and will thrive. They also have a great selection of shrubs and trees. Their prices are reasonable especially considering the excellent quality of flowers and plants that you are purchasing. I love this place. read more
