The management is a joke they were standing in a circle joking around so I went up to them and respectfully asked for some assistance in locating the proper tool and instead taking the initiative to help me they got on the walkie talkie and called for assistance! After ten minutes a pregnant employee was returning from lunch and she must have seen the frustration on my face because she checked in with me to make sure I was alright after explaining the situation to her and then she saw the two managers talking and laughing annoyi loud she took me to the proper isle and helped me select the product I needed when she began to help me lift the item into the cart she menti she was pregnant and I had to stop her from doing that even though she was willing. Thank you to the pregnant lady and good ridda to the two guys in charge! read more

Mid City Nursery in American Canyon did not have the rose varieties I wanted but I bought 3 potted rose bushes anyway.. and had to immediately return 2 with mildew. I spent 30% more for 2 rose bushes, exactly the rare varieties I was searching for, from Central Valley in St Helena and it was worth every penny. They have flourished and are now 30% BIGGER than the one remaining one from Mid City. read more

Let's face it: the reason people come here is because it is the only big lumberyard / construction store in the area (ie. "upvalley") -- otherwise, you can drive about 20-30 minutes away and get bigger/better selection and better prices at the competitors (Home Depot, OSH, etc.) in Napa or Santa Rosa. So, having said that... it's not surprising that most of their products are about 15%-30% more expensive than those competitors, which they can get away with because they are the only game in town, and for the sake of convenience (it may also be that they give contractor discounts -- but I am not a contractor, so I'm writing this review from the viewpoint of just somebody who needs to do gardening and DIY repairs and such on occasion.) I'm okay with a SMALL markup in exchange for convenience (I live right here in town), and for that reason I have bought some basic construction materials like lumber and drywall here. HOWEVER, (a) the hours are not very convenient -- in fact, if you are NOT a contractor, it's hard to even get here because by the time you get off of work on a weekday, they are closed; and (b) some of the items are EXORBITANTLY priced. For example, I recently inquired about their toilets, since I saw on the website that they carry Kohler and Toto, and we need a new toilet (and want Toto brand.) Though their selection is very limited (maybe 3 total models), they did have one we were looking for... but the price they quoted for their toilets is about 100% MORE (TWICE THE PRICE) of competitors. (For example, their Toto Drake toilet is $479; we just ordered the exact same model from Home Depot for $246!) So... you should definitely Google prices to cost-compare when you come in here... many things are only a little more expensive than Home Depot, Amazon, etc.... but some things are quite a ripoff! read more

They offer free popcorn, clean restrooms, fancy cookbooks from the Model Bakery&Esquire magazine. They have something for everybody. I was intrigued by the rose petal confit. The garden center of Central Valley Builders Supply is ENORMOUS... as are their hardware supplies. They really have something for everybody- from the vineyard laborer to the Wine Country hostess. The prices are reasonable; they have sales on Easter goodies. Since I have Tula (the Russian, not the Mexican one) black tomatoes, I saw other plants that would fit on my patio. They have garden statuary. Excellent service, friendly people... and even if their small lot is full, they do have abundant street parking. read more

Bad customer service. My builder did a phone order on a Tuesday for some sheetrock to be delivered on Friday. I followed up and confirmed the order and paid for it. The sheetrock never showed up. When I called to find out why, the clerk said there was a shortage of sheetrock. Why didn't they call me and let me know this beforehand? My builder lost 2 days of work and I had to pay him to go to another supplier and get the sheetrock himself. What kind of business thinks that this is acceptable customer service? read more

Never buy the 4-foot $45 one -year-old avocados. If you want them to survive the winter and have fruit the first year, just always pay the $90 for a three-year-old 8-foot tree. You would spend more than the difference in water over the three year wait. You CAN buy time. Nice avocados and citrus but little variety in the exotics here. read more

Wonderful garden & hardware store! They carry a diverse and interesting selection of annuals, perennials, shrubs, dwarf & specimen trees, plus a smaller house plant area at the store entrance. Central Valley also offers gorgeous pots and planters, ranging from modern to traditional to rustic, in all different materials. AND they carry the tres chic Fermob French bistro and garden furniture, which I am now kinda obsessed with & loved that they carried several different styles. I actually came here to buy some of their awesome artisan wire trellis & garden forms (that are super cheap btw!!) but I guess other people know the secret as they were sold out of the style I was looking for. :/ Indoors, they have a bunch of seeds, plus some super cute, vintage-inspired home decor, garden hats & gloves. Central Valley is one of the better garden stores I've been to lately. Def stop in! read more

I'm hopeful that CVBS is finally on the upswing. I've been a customer for 35 years and have seen them go from great to abysmal! A year ago I complained of items constantly out of stock, really high prices, clueless floor staff, etc. BUT, recently I've noticed a NEW ATTITUDE!! They are really trying to win back people's business and trust. Yes, some prices still can come down further, but I was amazed by the plumbing and lumber prices. Also there's energy among the staff! My husband is a landscape contractor and we have been shopping at this store since 1995. They have the best selection of product and are locals go-to. However, the lack of competition makes them severely over priced. Obviously we have dealt with cost for convenience for years until the bad attitudes and careless staff got to be to much. Making special orders with the garden department can be stressful when you are having to call them multiple times for availability and no one gets back to you. The cashiers are rude, talking on their cell phones while checking you out, and seem put out when you ask questions or need assistance. All this while spending hundreds every trip! read more

I'm always reluctant to go to this business, although they always have what I'm looking for I find it annoying to have the staff ignore me and act in a rude way when they're interrupted while they chat on their cell phones or are having a bull session in the back of the store, this behavior is not helping the image of the business. I had the misfortune of buying something that needed to be returned, we were treated like we were returning stolen merchandise by a rude employee at the front counter who was talking to a friend on her cell phone. I gave them two stars because the store is well-stocked with merchandise, a change in employee attitude would certainly raise their rating with me. I'm happy others have not shared the same experience at this business, you must have gotten them on a good day. read more

Terrible. Pricey ... lousy serve from sales people who often don't have a clue. Last week I bought some gate valves. Price on the shelf (and they often don't even bother with prices) was 6.99. Got to the car and saw they charged me 9.99. Went back in ... they refunded, but no "sorry." The one exception is the gardening section ... nice people. Home depot is certainly not perfect, but even it is better than this place. read more

I only venture to Home Depot if I've looked here first ( or Steve's Hardware). I've bought all different types of things here over the last few years such as a Christmas tree, fencing, paint, pvc pipes and sprinkler parts for my odd projects. I have always found the staff to be polite and very helpful. I'm not anyone special nor do I buy a lot, but once I even had an employee walk all over the yard showing me different types of fencing til we found the right one. It's true they are a little pricey, but I calculated the cost of gas for me to go to Home Depot and I would have spent more money (and time!) at least for that particular purchase to go all the way to Napa. When I can afford it I don't mind spending a little extra at a local business that gives jobs to the community. read more

I been shopping at Central Valley Builders for 20yrs Central Valley is a great store to shop if you need to get a quick fix in your house and to shop for plants. If you want great customer service there is one Gal that stands out I don't know her name but she is always willing to help every time I go in she has a great smile and always has a positive attitude no matter what day or time it is.She remembered my name after helping me one time. Frankly, we're disturbed by the low reviews. We have been working on a playhouse for our grandchildren since last summer. We've been to Central Valley many times, always with a stellar experience. The staff is knowledgable and bends over backward to be helpful On one occasion, the salesperson worked with me for nearly an hour to customize an unusual electrical fitting. They have a great selection and we're greeted by friendly sales people every time. We are experienced builders that includes 6 years as project manager for Habitat builds. And, this is no ordinary playhouse, hence it's nickname: The Playmansion. We would love to have Central Valley in the Bay Area. Just one small complaint: it would be icing on the cake if the cashier would smile (presumably the grump in another review)! read more

I mostly adore this place. The guys are super helpful inside the store, and outside in the awesome garden center, people are mostly great as well. I've run into an indifferent or unknowledgeable person out there about 1/3 of the time, and 2/3 of the time really great people are totally helpful. They have cool gift stuff and interesting containers out there too. And there are a lot of really unusual plants. A few plants weren't looking so healthy, but I guess that's the way it goes sometimes. The bad part...I was looking everywhere for trellis netting, and this store was one I called. The person on the phone acted like he had never in all his born days heard of a thing called trellis netting, and assured me that all they had was bird netting. I finally ordered it online and had to wait 2 weeks. Next time I was at Central Valley, dammit! There was a rack of trellis netting in packs on the wall. Thanks, dude. read more
