This Ace Hardware is well-stocked and has a houseware section they physically expanded a few years ago, with elite and unique inventory as well as the basics. Every employee is helpful and attentive. We are a contractor in the area and yesterday we had an issue with a pressure switch on a well. I called the store at 6:04pm and even though they were officially closed, Jose answered the phone. He had the switch I needed, wrote up the order, and did a phone sale for me. Then he was able to stage the product outside for my guys to come get it and do the repair. At 6:12pm, I called again and Jose answered again! I needed Teflon tape. He placed it outside for us. Jose went above and beyond the call of duty on this one. This is a perfect example of exemplary customer service. Something you only get in a small town. Well done Steve's Hardware and well done Jose! I sent my Latino contractor to buy supplies. The moment he entered the store, he was immediately followed by a clerk. He did not ask him if he needed help till my contractor asked him why he was following him. I would not buy from an establishment that stereotypes patrons who are not white. Maybe they should hire people who have some degree of education. read more

Steves Hardware was my go-to place when I had ant issues. This was the place to go when I was looking for organic ant spray that I could use in my kitchen. Steves Hardware has very much an independent, small town feel. Unlike other hardware stores, they also have kitchen supplies (Central Valley nearby has rose petal confit&cookbooks, so there's that) In St. Helena, hardware stores do double duty... not only they for maintenance in one's kitchen, but the cooking too. Don't come a few minutes before their new 5 PM closing time. Ruing to fix my 88 year old mom's drain. I ran across town in 90 degree weather (car not working today) just to have the lady worker who was being let out the door tell me they were closed. After a brief out of breath conversation about my situation she actually laughed at me. I turned around and said that was not cool. I should have checked my phone while we were talking because I got to the corner as I left and saw it was just turning five. Too bad, it used to be such a helpful place. It is no wonder the local hardware stores are disappearing. I expect it will be another "Keller's meats" "Vasconie's Drugs" just a storefront with an art gallery inside, soon. As far as hardware stores go this is one of my favorites. They don't always have everything I need but they have a really good variety. Pretty cool to see ammo and guns in the back as well. Next door is a housewares store with all kinds of stuff for the kitchen and house. I will continue to support this local hardware store. read more

This hardware store has it all. You wouldn't think that for such a tiny hardware store in St. Helena they have the depth of product selection they do. The store is well laid out, and I was quickly in and quickly out, amazing for such a smaller store. Staff was readily available to help me, although on this trip I knew exactly what I needed. Steves Hardware has never failed in having what we needed. We don't go there for the highly agricultural or construction needs (drip irrigation or lumber, though they do have things like nails, nuts and bolts, screws, etc) but any household or garden needs, they almost always have it! The staff is extremely helpful and won't leave you wandering around searching like most stores. Part of the store is now dedicated to kitchen/culinary products and has amazing tools for chefs as well as aspiring foodies. I've brought friends and family there just to snoop through the one of a kind items. So many times Steves has "saved the day" by having just the thing we needed-- saving a trip to Napa. This store is a long time treasure to our town! read more

Been to this Ace many times. Was just there and wanted to use a 25% off coupon for one item. After talking to three different people who didn't anything about the coupon, the owner tells me they don't accept Ace coupons. When I pointed out that they are an Ace and should honor Ace coupons, she got very nasty and said no. Shame is it would have been 25% off a $30 item. For $8 dollars they have lost a customer for good. read more

Is it pathetic that the bf and I spent more time and money in this store on our recent vacation than any other? Sort of. But that's how much this place rocks. Full-service hardware store with everything you need to outfit a stylish kitchen with appliances and gadgets and everything. We LOVED it. I'd never seen so many mandolines on display in one place. I think they had 5. Maybe 6. Crazy. Also super-kind, helpful staff. If every Ace were like this Home Depot would be out of business--at least I'd like to think! read more

Called ahead looking for Nora Flemming items. Lady on the phone was kind and checked and told me they didn't have the bud vase I wanted, but did have another item. She kindly put it on hold for me for the next day. Next day I went in, conveniently found it at the counter waiting. The staff is friendly and very helpful..except for the fact that the item the lady said they didn't have in stock, they actually did. Bummer bec I ended up ordering it on Amazon when she told me they didn't have it. Overall, a great spot though! Half the place is housewares and the other half is hardware. Would be back! read more

Simple complaint. Live in Saint Helena. Bought a mag light flashlight for 43 bucks total, ouch right.... During the power outage mind you... Sticker says I can't return due to the nature of the product. I try to get store credit within the 7 days because the product was not opened at all. Just a shame that when I have no power a 23 dollar flashlight on amazon cost 43 at the local Steve's hardware and housewares. The excuse I got for not being able to get store credit was that " he bought it during the outage so no we can't".....are you serious... that's the reason why I'm not allowed to return a perfectly new mag light was because I bought it during a time of need.... that is a just a big big joke and the owners ought to be ashamed of themselves for sticking it to the town during a outage... I literally just shop here for things here and there and now I will take my minimal business to the store further down the road... they won't care about this review just like they seemed to not care about the fact that I just wanted store credit for a perfectly unused flashlight... Great selection, but the staff were rude. I understand the desire to talk negatively about a customer after they leave if they have come off as cheap for asking if they have to pay for a bag. But typically prudence suggests to wait until you are: 1.) Alone or without any customers within hearing. Or 2.) Off the clock. This disrespect definitely put me off my intended purchase and I took my business down the street. read more

Steves Hardware & Homeware is a really great hardware store. Not only do they have pretty much anything you would ever need, but their employees are really polite, professional, and very helpful. My wife likes all of the decorations and home decor items. I went into the store over the weekend and I had my 11 pound Maltipoo dog with me. She is a rescue off of the streets and she is learning how to trust humans. One of their employees got on the floor with her to be on her level - to make her feel more comfortable. Not only did we get the hardware store items that we needed, but our dog found another person that was nice to her. You can't ask for a better experience. read more

Steves is a fabulous Hardware Store! It's not a Lumber Yard or a Home Center, but a good old American Hardware Store where you can get the parts to fix darn near anything at home or work. My fiancé and myself have never felt so uncomfortable in a store. We noticed that a male worker greeted us and then sped through the store to cut us off to ask what we were looking for. Very awkward, but perhaps he was just being hyper helpful. What really got me was one of the other clerks spying on us--I saw her consistently following us around and even stooping down and looking through the racks to check on our doings. We are both middle aged professionals who were dressed in resort wear summer casuals--no room to hide any hardware "treasures" if we decided to steal any. Needless to say, we will never go there again. read more

Awesome place. They have everything you could possibly want or need. This started off as my go-to spot for having keys made (super fast) but now I get everything from cleaning supplies to chicken feed here. Very friendly & helpful. They never "talk down" to me when it's pretty obvious I'm clueless about some tool or something, which makes me like them even more! They are a tiny bit more expensive than a bigger chain store-- but it's absolutely worth a few more pennies when you get such great customer service & quality of products. I like supporting local businesses, and actually look forward to going here when I run my errands. I have to stay out of the other side, the "Homeware" section because it is just TOO CUTE! I end up spending $$$$ on all the fabulous kitchen stuff. Don't expect to walk out of that store without something wonderful you never even knew you HAD to have. read more

Love coming here. The guys are knowledgable and are quick to offer help or help you find stuff...unlike Homedepot. I was trying to make a diaper sprayer but couldn't find the right fittings. Glen (I think that's his name) pulled out just the right fittings and valves to make it happen. It would have taken me forever to sort through their shelves to find them. My only little complaint are their prices, but the service and downtown location makes up for it. And they have guns and cool man toys in the back. read more
