Ive been going to the Y for about 3 months now and I must say I enjoy it. This location has the sauna, pools and jacuzzi which is perfect for my post workout. The staff is not friendly. The life guards don't watch the lanes and if an issue arises I been told to tell the offender. I went into the office months ago to turn in paperwork for assistance and was turned away. Was told they knew what would happen and that I will be charged more due to changes in the policy and to cancel buy a certain cut off date. I keep missing the date sadly so been paying for something I can not afford. I am only working part time and can not afford it. I know they do a great deal for the community and disadvantaged family's and wonder why they can't help out seniors that have limited income. I wish the Y was geared towards people without family's as much as they focus on family's. There are a number of us out here. read more

I registered my 6 yr old son for the soccer camp last week. Tuesday afternoon, my husband got a call from the camp saying my son was stung by a bee on the lip, and asking us to pick him up ASAP. Over the phone, we requested the teacher to remove the stinger so less venom can be released, but she refused, stating they could not help him in this way per company policy. It was surprising that a common sense best practice is not being followed in YMCA. The rest of the week we had to rearrange work schedule to take care of him at home, since his face was swollen like a pumpkin. Again, we understand it was not the camp or teacher's fault this happened, but the result would be so much different if the stinger was removed immediately. If this is really a YMCA policy, I'm curious as to why. If my son were choking or bleeding would a counselor be able to intervene? We paid for a five day camp, and not only did we receive half the service, but also our son suffered the unfortunate incident. We tried to email and call the facility, but they have been ignoring us since. read more

I was visiting from out of town. The option for classes was AWESOME!! The spin instructor for RPM was amazing. I had an ethereal and heated ride all in one. So why not 5 stars? I still love the Y. The Y was recently modernized and all the equipment is new with the tv sets. The classes are pretty good-- Khara is the best instructor. I love her monday night sculpting class, friday boot camp, and Saturday morning spinning and abs class. read more

I initially joined the Y due to its proximity to my house, but stayed because of the great facility, excellent classes, and welcoming staff. I first used only the weight room and the pool but when I wanted to get back into a regular yoga practice, I checked out a couple of the yoga classes. Although all of the instructors I have had have been excellent, my favorite is Grace. She teaches a vinyasa flow on Tuesdays and Sundays and a therapeutic class on Thursday evenings. She is an engaging and dedicated instructor and always provides corrections and modifications as needed. The classes are serious, but never stuffy or stuck up. Grace really makes an effort to get to know each of her students, regular or not, and fosters a welcoming community environment in all her classes. read more

This is a review for the adult swimming class. I join YMCA and the adult swimming class together so that I can get the special member's rate of $74. The class consists of 2 session per week, each sessions last about 40 minutes. You can choose between the Mon+Wed or Tue+Thu session. The Mon+Wed session is at the outdoor pool. The Tue+Thu session is at the indoor pool. I started the class without knowing how to swim and at the end of the class, I know how to swim free-style, breaststroke and backstroke. The instructors Debbie and Liz are very nice. They let you learn at your own pace and not putting too much pressure on you. They also use different equipments in helping us to learn and improve. I must mention that Debbie is a very nice person. Thanks to her encouragement, I have been able to learn how to swim and improve everyday. Even after I have finished my class, she still answer my questions whenever I run into her. In summary, if you want to learn how to swim, this is a good class for you. However, make sure that you practice a lot after the class, not just only during the class. read more

This is a really nice, old YMCA. The pools are beautiful. I especially like the yoga classes taught by Grace Vatus. She is an excellent instructor who spends a lot of time and energy during each class, helping to make sure that her student's experience is beneficial to them. read more

Lets make this clear, I love this place because of the people. It is a fun, safe, relatively clean place to swim, workout, and play basketball. But, the facility is bizarre. It's ugly, horribly painted, old, and unorganized. I like to call this place the winchester mystery gym. Doors that lead to no where, multiple ways to every location. Empty rooms! It is great. The classes are amazing! I recommend the U-jam class, it's so fun!! Also, the Fitlinxx system is cool. Unfortunately, when I don't come at least once a week, my instructor always messages me asking if I have any problems. I'm like, um no? Other than that it is awesome!! My fave instructor is Michael, or Mikey. he's so nice and cool! The rest of the staff is great too, always willing to help, and helping out, always. =^.^= read more

It's fun to stay at the....Y M C A Hahhhh, but really this place has it all. It is super crowded in summer, but they were kind enough to give me a trial pass for few days when I first got to town. I was deciding between 24 Hour Fitness and here. Deciding factor- water aerobic classes!! Great Instructors, great workout routine, super fun classes with music in shallow water class. And the neighborhood. I Love Rose garden, Whole Foods close by & many coffee stop options , plus the pretty Rose Garden so - - - despite the crowded, kind of weird set up in locker rooms ( one just for kids...be careful not to go wrong way!) And the little ones running in and out in summer- the time for water aerobics and the classes really saved me in the scorching Silicon Valley summer!!!! Beware, membership is high! Last I checked $60 a month. Ask for lower rate of $45 ( still high- ish) if you income qualify. So- I left the Y and looking to come back. Alas, I only work 24hrs a week due to extreme budget cuts at my non profit housing organization. So Barbara, may I respectfully request a lower than $60 membership with showing pay stubs? I hesitate returning ad a tax return is a scholarship requirement. I haven't received all documents to file yet. If granted, my 55 year old sore joints from inactivity would greatly appreciate ! read more

The YMCA offers a decent amount of family friendly programs. The pools are great. My main complaint is the bizarre locker room policy. For such a family friendly place, it's really weird that the kid locker room has zero lockers. This means I have to lug all our stuff up the stairs after changing into our pool stuff and track down a locker elsewhere and then after swimming, take my cold, wet toddler back to the locker before we go back down to the kids locker room. Families with kids usually have to bring even more stuff than a single person does. It seems unreasonable that there wouldn't be a few lockers to accommodate us down in the kids locker room. read more

This place is well known and packed with people from San Jose. The locker rooms and other locations are dirty and the facilities are typically outdated. However the maintenance is okay. Everything there is quite old except for a few exceptions. Bring your own basketball if you're using the gymnasium! However the staff there are kind and very helpful! read more

This is a very safe place to work out, meet old friends and make new ones. I also enjoy playing basketball and learned to play Volleyball(well, im a work in progress still). The place is clean and the staff are always willing to help. No need to pay higher fees for those other fancy gyms in my opinion. read more

Good facility. After 6 years of 3 days a week of cardio machines and weights I added the Circuit training class with Glen which added a lot to my routine. It provides the flexibility to go easy or hard depending on how you feel which is what I needed to improve my stamina after a hip replacement. The Y doesn't seem to be overly crowded and has a good choice of classes or you can use the machines and workout rooms and time your own workout. read more

I just joined the YMCA with my kid in another Silicon valley branch since he will start summer camp there close to my company, and the membership is Silicon Valley membership which ensures me to access any 9 branches on their list free of extra charge. I double checked with Palo Alto branch of my membership and today I took my son to the pool, I was asked to pay $5 by 'Selena' at their membership office when I registered my boy to their youth class. She was not patient while I was trying to get things clear and not even bother answer my questions. So I called Palo Alto branch and asked what is going on. They asked me to call central YMCA again to refer to them. Ok, I called Selena, she still insisted I have to pay $5 each time I access their branch because my membership is in Palo Alto, then I argued my membership is Silicon Valley membership, and guess what, she said yes, you don't need to pay extra. WTF?! You pulled all my membership information in your office and still asked $5 when you know my membership is Silicon Valley membership?! unprofessional, impatient, rude, this is all I can say, if you are waiting in line in their membership office, just avoid her. I have lived in the neighborhood 10yrs + and thought I should give this place a try. Came in asking for a tour and they said NO and I would have to talk to someone about signing up and pricing and all that first. So I spoke to a very rude white lady (sorry cant remember the name) in the office and she just kept treating me a way I wouldn't treat potential members . I asked at the end if NOW I could get the tour but she said why don't you look over the paper work and see what you think about pricing contact her later and then I could take the tour. Maybe she didn't want me joining the place, SHOOT I don't know . Maybe I was over dressed for a gym (professional office type clothing nothing crazy! )and intimidated her ..hey I have places to go to lady. Either way I felt very judged and offended and would never come back.. the place didn't even look clean to be honest kind of run down. I have gone to the Central Y a few times now to check out the classes & facilities. I thoroughly enjoyed the Yoga classes taught by Grace V. I think she has helped me make big strides physically through yoga and has been personable, polite and fun the entire time. I've visited a few independent Yoga studios around the area and I've enjoyed Grace as an instructor the best. I find her style of teaching very soothing and helpful for all levels of experience as well as a very friendly atmosphere. I think anyone attending the Central Y should check her class out! read more

The desk staff are not easy to deal with, and who should know they are the first impressions for the facility. I'll start by saying I've been coming here for years and I think some of the negative reviews of the facilities are way overblown. The facilities are clean and up to date and the pools are very nice. Way better than, say, 24 hour fitness but not as nice as a fancy private club. It suits my family just fine. HOWEVER...recently they have changed their locker rooms and the situation is quickly going from bad to worse. There is only one locker room for children under 12 and it's co-ed. That's right, if you take your kids to the pool and would like to shower at the Y, you are forced to share the showers, bathrooms, and changing area with parents of both genders. Now, I'm not religious, conservative, or even very modest (but there are plenty of Y members who are and I really feel for them in this situation!) but I refuse to be forced to shower and change alongside strange men. Progressive is one thing, but this complete and total ignorance of women's needs is inexcusable. In this era of #metoo you'd think they would be a little more clued in to the fact that women already suffer leering, sexual harassment, and assault in any number of work places and public spaces. Must we also be subject to it in the most private spaces of our community centers? Why is the Y not providing a safe space for women and their children to shower and change? It seems like a lawsuit just waiting to happen. I have brought the issue up with multiple employees, including the manager, Linda, who was rude and dismissive at best (although it's not the first time - maybe she is not cut out for a managerial position?). Other women I know have also brought it up on multiple occasions. Yet for some strange reason they are still clinging to this new policy like a life raft. I speak for myself and other moms at the Y when I say they are treating us like we are in the wrong or suggesting that we should somehow change our routine or just "get used to it." Today is the second time I've been harassed and asked to leave the locker room - once for just going down to the new co-ed space to see if it was a safe space to bring my kids (I was alone at the time), and again today for taking my kids to the women's locker room with me. This time, a teenage lifeguard with a major attitude harassed and yelled at a friend and I for having our kids in the women's locker room. She even asked for our names like she was going to get us kicked out of the YMCA. Totally unacceptable. I hope you guys figure it out, because the Y used to be my favorite place to exercise, enjoy the pool, and really get to know a diverse set of people in our community. What a shame. read more

This review is specific to Grace's therapeutic yoga class. I have been her student at 2 different YMCA facilities for over 6 years. It is thanks to Grace's active stretching techniques that I have been able to continue an athletic life into my 70's. For 6 years I have watched her pay close attention to her new students making certain that they can follow along with the class and that they understand the theory behind the movements. Grace asks about physical limitations and then makes adjustments for that specific student's needs. Grace does interact with us which makes her class not only physically beneficial but fun. If class is to be all work and no play, then there would be far fewer participants. We show up and fill the room because we enjoy Grace's personality and warmth. I must admit that when I first started taking her class I had to really work at joining in because her stretching techniques are quite detailed and challenging. The work I put into it has paid off beyond my wildest hopes. I feel better at 72 than I did in my 50's. I am so grateful. Betsy El Camino YMCA member since 2001 read more

This is the worst summer camp I have experienced in the last 3 years! The administration is a chaos, and the communication is almost zero. First, no heads up communication was received even after I requested a couple of time a week before the start of camp. Only on the Monday, after I dropped of my kid and arrived at work, I got the so called "Highlight sheet for camp" and it is marked as "per your request". Shouldn't this be a standard procedure to let parents know what to bring and where to drop off/pick up at least a day before the camp start? Second, on the first day, I dropped off my kid to Hoover middle school according to what I learned from the website (as I mentioned, no communication letter was received, so that is all I have as a guide), since no body and no sign is there, I have to walk with my kid around the campus, and luckily, we saw a group of campers walking away so we walked across the campus diagonally trying to catch up with them. Finally, after catching up, I was told, after 9:15am, I should drop off my kid to Lincoln high school, which is a 11 min adult walk away. Third, on Wednesday, when I drop my kid at Lincoln high as usual, I was told for my kid's camp, "today they are not here, but should be dropped off at Hoover". They gave me the reason "they need to share bus with someone else", but shouldn't you at least let the parents know when they pick up on Tuesday or send an email or call? Again, ZERO communication here! And they always have an excuse, no apology. Fourth, based on what happened in the 1st week, and because I enrolled my kid for another week here, as a precaution, I specifically asked their counselor, where I should drop my kid for next week's camp. I was told, I should drop off at Hoover no matter what, since it is a different type of camp from the 1st week. Fifth, on the 1st day of 2nd week, when we arrive at Hoover middle, no body is there and no sign is given to tell us where the campers and counselors are, we only saw backpacks in the gym but cound't find anyone there. Later, 3 more kids came with their parents puzzled on where to find anybody to know where to drop off. I called the office, nobody answered, after several try, I finally caught one on the phone, but was told we should drop them off at Lincoln high. I led the way for other families to Lincoln, and was told I should always drop my kid there after 9:15am. I told them about what I heard from another counselor last week about drop off location, and they said that is not correct! Again, no apology at all. In summary, this is not the camp we like, especially due to the lack of communication! They should have done a much better job on organization and communication! I can see there is some potential safety issue due to this bad organization and communication, and I won't send my kid to this camp again! Last year we used other YMCA site and it was fine, so I think this is solely location dependent. read more

I love the y! I've been coming here for about 6 years. They have a beautiful facility with a super friendly staff. With all their classes and events, it's totally worth the money! I used to swim a lot and they have both an indoor and outdoor pool. The only thing that kind of sucks is during the summer, swim lessons basically take over, so make sure to check the schedule,especially if you have kids pumped to swim. I love all the kids classes, my son is definitely a y baby, he has been going his whole life and loves everyone there, especially miss ande. My 3 month old will soon be running the halls too. Some of the kids club employees I'm not a huge fan of, they don't seem to really know how to interact with kids, especially the little ones who sometimes have trouble listening, but there are plenty of amazing employees to make up for it! I also love that the weight room is not intimidating like other gyms can be. Plus there is always a staff member who will gladly help. read more
