She was a wonderful tour guide and answered all our questions about making costumes and the history. The audio tour and the costumes were amazing and we learned so much about the culture, movies, and history. Highly recommend visiting this museum if you visit Santa Fe. It's a must see.

Right off the plaza and also connects directly to the Governor's Palace, which you can also visit. It's a very large and sprawling museum. Some rooms have a lot to read and others have sparse explanations. Of course the exhibitions focus on New Mexico. When I visited, they had exhibits on Southwest jewelry, New Mexico stories, southwestern paintings, and one about the railroad. Other exhibits: history of printing presses in New Mexico, along with cool print examples. Another large exhibition they had (Home on the Range) was about how the US government/military seized large swaths of private ranch land from New Mexico ranchers to test war weapons. Some of them never got that land back. I HAD NO IDEA! This lead me to learn more on my own. They have other features on New Mexicans fighting back against the system, such as when three Navajo women defeated the construction of a coal-fired power plant. One of my other favorite exhibits focused on dining in New Mexico. It was set up like a cool 50's diner and played awesome music that made it more fun. Panels covered numerous famous New Mexican dishes and eateries. It was a lot of reading, but worth it. There were several other worthwhile side quests in this museum. Should definitely make it a stop early in your Santa Fe trip to add context and a sense of appreciation to your journey.

Mind you that although we were casual we were not sloppy. I love fashion, art and the finer things .. as well as a good dive bar and Levi's but I felt VERY unwelcome for no good reason. Bad day perhaps? I was friendly to the shop keeper but she seemed pretty salty and sus. What I have to say is I came in intending to spend real money and enjoy myself but I was so put off by this small town basic B that I won't be back. Good luck with this unremarkable business. El Rancho de las Golondrinas Is to New Mexico what Colonial Williamsburg is to Virginia, though a…read morebit smaller in size and historical importance. During the 17th and 18th centuries, this was the last stop on the Santa Fe Trail right before arriving in that city. Visiting this "living museum", you get something of a feel for what it might have been like to live in a time when it took many months for caravans traveling the Santa Fe Trail to reach their destination. The living areas, workshops, farm, and animal pens give visitors a look at the hard lives of those who blazed the trail for the settlement of this part of the American Southwest. If you're traveling with children, you'll find that there are walks (both short and long) through the property with space for children to explore and run. Situated only about 20 minutes South of Santa Fe and accessible from I-25, the site is good to visit year-round, but in the Summer months it's probably best to come in the mornings while the temperature remains below 90+ degrees.

You will do a lot of walking, because it is a distance between exhibits. I saw someone say this place is dusty, well YES it's an historical village. Kids can really get exercise & will love the water mill. We plan to go again during the harvest festival. The historical volunteer experts were outstanding & a wealth of knowledge. There are lots of shade trees If you bring a picnic lunch. This place is very much worth the drive. Tips: good walking shoes, water, hats, suntan lotion, walking sticks (because of rough terrain if needed) Go early to beat the heat....

When I visited, they were featuring "roadside attractions," focusing on Route 66 and all the kitsch and neon found along the "mother road." They also had some abstract art called "Visions of America from New Mexico." Like many museums I've visited in the Southwest and west, they had a "selections from the 20th century collection," which focused on cowboys, Mexican and southwestern motifs, and livestock. Along similar lines, they had a room on Paul Burlin, "An American Modernist in the Southwest." I've included photos of some of his beautiful, colorful work. They had a great pottery exhibit. It wasn't just any type of pottery. A lot of it had modern design (like one pot had Osama bin Laden on the side and George Bush on the other, to capture the feeling of 9/11). They also had "visions of America from New Mexico," which is a contemporary/modernist exhibit. I can't remember my cost, but I feel like it was around 12 bucks or so and was good for this museum as well as the contemporary museum. Also nice and cool inside on a hot day!

It's one of my favorites along with a La Conquistadora clothing exhibit a few years ago. There are a few permanent exhibits displaying rooms during the Spanish Colonial period. The staff is friendly and their events are well attended. It's a small museum in a beautiful building and well worth a visit. Curious about the Spanish settler history of New Mexico and its impact on the area, I found the current show Trails, Rails and Highways very informative and carefully curated, with a large range of beautiful and/or meaningful objects. I appreciated the way in which the curation presented the entangled stories of the objects, unlike many other decorative arts or heritage museums that only focus on the beauty of objects on view without engaging with their complicated pasts. I learned so much about New Mexico from this show and enjoyed the chance to see so many amazing objects. Will definitely go back when next in Santa Fe!
