Parent is generally pleased with living here. Though administration is friendly, there seems to be a lot of management issues. Negatives: Inconsistent communications and follow up. My husband and I still feel like full-time care workers for our parent because of the amount of challenges we are running into and having to follow up on to include: - Communication - the facility states they are willing to communicate with POA for parent, yet they are inconsistent in replying to emails and phone calls. When you stop in to visit and speak with the Director or Head Nurse, often a commitment is verbally made but not followed through. - Inaccurate billing - monthly issues in tune of 100s of dollars. If residents are handling their own billing, I would highly recommend they review with fine tooth comb or have a POA assist. - Medication management - for a parent with special timing needs for medication (and explicitly provided and explained upon arrival to facility and many times since) medication timing has been wholly inconsistent. (NOTE: Just when we think processes are leveling off, something happens and a medication is not given at appropriate time or given separately from other meds) - Dining room service very slow and some could use customer service training, which is my background (Jessica, Kim, and Marisol wonderful) - Security - not as secure as I would prefer Bottom line: rated 2 star as descriptive lists "Could be better" - especially based on the sales pitch we received upon arrival/booking. I am sharing my experience to shed light on the serious problems in both the work environment and the quality of resident care. My first impression of the facility came during orientation. I mentioned that I had gotten sick after my interview visit--since that was the only place I had been that day--and instead of responding with understanding, the staff member leading my orientation argued with me and told me it wasn't possible. I expressed that it was inappropriate and toxic to argue with me about something like that, and that experience set the tone for the type of communication I would come to expect from this place. Once I started working, I immediately noticed that communication between staff members was poor and often hostile. I was told during training that one aide would work one side of the floor and another would work the opposite side. However, when I mentioned that in passing, a nurse overheard and used that statement against me. She fabricated a story that another aide had asked me for help and that I ignored her--which was completely false. The aide never came to me, never called me over the radio, and never tried to reach out. Despite this, the nurse reported me to management, and I was nearly sent home because of that false accusation. I had to call my supervisor to explain what really happened, but the damage to my reputation had already been done. There have also been multiple incidents involving missing equipment--specifically my work radio. On more than one occasion, my radio was stolen or hidden, and when I reported it, I was told that "nobody is taking it." However, the same issue kept happening, which made it clear that it was being done intentionally. This behavior created unnecessary tension and made it difficult to perform my job safely and efficiently. The overall workplace culture is extremely toxic. Many employees are quick to gossip, argue, or refuse to help one another. I've been met with sarcasm and disrespect more times than I can count, even when I'm just trying to provide proper care to residents. Management often brushes off these issues or dismisses concerns entirely, leaving employees to fend for themselves in a negative and unprofessional atmosphere. Payroll has also been unreliable. On two separate occasions, I was told I would be paid on a certain Friday and ended up being paid a week or two later instead. On one weekend, I worked through my lunch breaks on both Saturday and Sunday due to being severely understaffed and short-handed. When I asked my boss to correct my pay for those missed breaks, I was told it would be fixed and paid out on Friday--but it wasn't. I had to contact her again, and she asked if she could "just do it next week." Only after I insisted did she have me e-sign a form to process the pay, but even then, I didn't receive it on time. Having to constantly chase down missing pay for hours I've already worked is completely unacceptable. Even more concerning than the employee treatment, however, is the state of resident care in the memory care unit. What I have witnessed there is genuinely heartbreaking. Many residents spend nearly all day and night sitting in the common area, except during meal times. They get a few brief afternoon activities, but otherwise, they are left idle and unstimulated. Residents are not being changed every two hours as required, and some individuals who clearly need nursing home-level care remain in memory care simply because it's profitable for management to keep them there. Staffing is dangerously low. Most nights there are only three aides responsible for up to 26 residents, many of whom need full assistance with feeding, transfers, and mobility. It's impossible to give every resident the attention and care they deserve under those conditions. The facility's fall rate is high, and from what I've seen, resident morale is extremely low. I've had residents tell me they feel hopeless, bored, and that they "hate it here." Some have even said they wish they could die. It's clear that profit takes priority over proper care. I've seen married couples forced to live in separate rooms so the facility can collect income from both. Residents who should be in a higher level of care are kept here for the sake of money. It's painful to watch and emotionally draining for those of us who genuinely care about these people. Overall, Sancerre at Orange City suffers from poor leadership, unprofessional communication, toxic staff dynamics, and serious neglect in resident care. Employees are not respected or supported, and residents are not receiving the care or dignity they deserve. This facility needs major reform.

As an out of town family member, I needed someone to take care of my elderly mother who was…read moredischarged from the ER after a fall and was returning home to live alone. Prior to her fall she was completely independent. I needed to find someone that could assist her in her home with everyday activities as she was unable to do very much for herself while recovering from the fall. In Home Health Care was ordered by the physician but did not cover the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) which are routine activities people do every day without assistance. There are six basic ADLs: eating, bathing, getting dressed, toileting, transferring, and continence. I was referred to BrightStar Care by a Social Services Case worker in the hospital. I reached out to BrightStar Care (Greater Volusia County Area of FL) to speak to someone and the Director of Operations, Masha, answered the phone and answered ALL of my questions, which were comprehensive, as I had need and experience in the past for other loved ones with these types of services. Masha arranged for her Director of Nursing, Noah, and Scheduler, Terah, to come to my mother's home and the four of us sat down together and discussed specifically what BrightStar Care could do for my mother and what our expectations of BrightStar Care were. My main concern was that I wanted to be sure that any caregivers assigned to assist my mother were not only competent but trustworthy! Masha does this type of in- home interview with her team members to determine the needs of the client as well as assess the client's physical and cognitive needs in order for Masha to best assist her, with feedback from Noah and Terah, to pair up what BrightStar Care hopes to be a good match up for both caregiver and client! Noah even went to the trouble to purchase, hand deliver and install on his own time, a hand-held shower attachment which he assured me would greatly benefit not only the assigned caregiver but my mother as well when she returned to independence! The next day, my mother was first introduced to Wendy and thoroughly enjoyed her! Because Wendy had a prior vacation planned that was to take place during the period of time my mother needed assistance, Masha assigned Katie to cover for Wendy while she was away. Katie came out on day two to assist my mom. Fortunately, I was present when Katie came to meet my mother and assist her with the plan of care that was implemented and reviewed by my mother, myself and Noah. Katie immediately began to take care of my mom like she was her own mother! What a lovely, caring spirit she displayed. I familiarized Katie with what needed to be done while my mother went to bed as she had been to her PCP that morning and was still in considerable pain. My mother's PCP ordered some x-rays for my mother and while I was with Katie and my mom, the PCP office called me later that morning and informed me that my mother needed to be taken directly to the ER again as the x-ray had revealed a life-threatening condition that required immediate intervention. I informed Katie that I was sorry and that I had to take my mom immediately to the ER. Katie, without hesitation, began to help me get my mother out of bed and into a wheelchair for transport. Katie continued to reassure my mother that everything was going to be okay! Katie ensured that should it become necessary, we collected adequate items for a possible overnight stay, for my mom. I felt so comfortable having just met Katie and seeing her caring nature and straight forward and considerate spirit, I asked Katie to remain in my mother's home and continue to do the cleaning, laundry and grocery storage we had previously discussed that needed to be done. Katie had already begun preparing a meal for my mother and stopped and cleaned up and bagged up in the freezer the remainder of the food products that needed storage. I told Katie to lock the door on her way out. Katie gave me her cell phone and asked me to keep her updated as to my mother's outcome. She was genuinely concerned for my mom. What a wonderful care giving spirit! My mother was admitted to the hospital and I no longer required the services of BrightStar Care as my mother was scheduled to discharge to a skilled nursing facility upon discharge for rehabilitation. I returned home to a cleaned up home! Even payment of the bill was simple. My mother had authorized any charges be applied to her credit card so even payment for services was effortless! I would HIGHLY recommend this company for care for a loved one should they need ADL assistance on an hourly, daily, weekly basis or even 24/7 care. They are very reasonably priced and provided superior care and services in the short time I interacted with both the team leaders and their caregivers! Thank you BrightStar Care!
