Took myself out for a wander about Williamsburg day and when I saw the Saturday happy hour I knew that I wanted to try this place out. I was told that was only available at the bar, but since I was by myself, I didn't really mind. I also think that this cannot be true because how can you offer for only six seats out at the bar. I got a Corona to go with my meal and ordered myself two of the happy hour tacos. I went with the chicken and vegan (this changes daily so definitely ask what is in it) which came out as fried cauliflower bites. They were both good, but out of the vegan was definitely the better. I also ordered another taco because while sitting at the bar, the owner gave the people next to me their meal and it smelled so good. I had to try it. The Camarón al mojo de Ajo (Grilled garlic shrimp taco) was very good! The shrimp are coded in the garlic butter sauce that is absolutely delicious. do you wish the taco came with some kind of garnish or slaw to give a brighter note to it, but I would definitely get it again. read more

This is the first review I've ever written -- not because I haven't had great or disappointing meals before, but because I believe in giving restaurants the benefit of the doubt. As someone who is both a genuine foodie, with a deep appreciation for everything from Michelin-starred dining to humble street vendors, and a first-generation Mexican who grew up partly in Mexico, I felt compelled to speak out about my recent experience here -- one that was deeply disappointing, both culturally and professionally. I've been a loyal patron of this restaurant for years. A close friend recommended it, knowing my palate and love for authentic Mexican cuisine. Since then, I've brought countless friends, hosted brunches, and introduced visitors from out of state and abroad to this spot. But after my most recent visit, I'll sadly be doing none of that moving forward. Our visit started with placing a drink and appetizer order -- pickled vegetables, spring onions, queso fundido with chorizo, and chips with guacamole. I politely asked our server to bring out the house salsas so I could enjoy them with the appetizers and my main course. He responded that the salsas could only be served with taco orders. I explained that I would indeed be ordering tacos, but would still like to enjoy the salsas with the rest of the meal as well. He said he'd check with the kitchen. When he returned to take our taco order, we asked again about the salsas. He told us the kitchen had denied the request -- per the owner Felipe Mendez's policy -- because the salsas are "not regular salsas like Americans are used to," and are meant to be served only with tacos. This statement was both baffling and insulting. As a Mexican, I can assure you that salsa is not just a condiment for tacos -- it is a foundational element of the cuisine, meant to be enjoyed with a wide range of dishes. The salsas in question -- including a standard salsa verde and chile de árbol -- are anything but exclusive or specialized. This rigid and dismissive stance, particularly given that I've been served the salsas with other dishes in the past, felt both inconsistent and disrespectful. Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve from there. The food itself -- once vibrant and flavorful -- has noticeably declined in quality. Tortillas arrived cold. The meats and fillings were under-seasoned. And the timing of service was erratic: we were told mid-meal that the spring onions were unavailable, and the pickled vegetables (which require no preparation) didn't arrive until the end of the meal, almost like an afterthought. I normally don't put much weight on reviews that focus purely on service issues -- I care about the food. But when the food quality drops and the hospitality feels dismissive, it's hard to separate one from the other. It saddens me to say that I will not be returning to this restaurant, nor will I continue recommending it to friends or guests. Wow, I was pleasantly surprised with this spot. I went on a Sunday evening so it was easy to get a table and they have a spacious outdoor dining area out front, but it doesn't seat too many parties. My "Jamaica" margarita was too strong for me but it looked lovely!(see pic) My favorite was the "gringo" it was like a chicken quesadilla but with a sauce they was sweet like bbq. It is rare, I truly do not like a place, but I just really did not care for here. I was thinking about giving it two stars (which would be my first 2-star review and the lowest rating I would have ever given) but there were a couple good things I'll mention. I came here on a weekday, a Wednesday around 7PM, it was nice out, so we sat outside, which was a cute little seating area. We started with margaritas, I had the jalapeno margarita. Now, I love margaritas, but I don't even that high of standards for them, I like pretty much all of them. But this was just bad. It tasted like dirty water TBH. I did not enjoy it one bit which is super disappointing bc I love margs. For dinner I ordered two tacos, one shrimp and one carne asada. These weren't awful, they just weren't good and were just like missing a lot of things. There was barely any flavor and it was literally just taco shell and meat. Nothing else. No toppings or anything. We also a rice and chorizo dish to share which was the best of everything, but it was just a simple thing and nothing to rave about. Our waiter seemed a little odd, like confused? but was nice, so for the service and the outside seating, I decided to give it 3 stars. Today, May 5, 2021. While dining here I witnessed the owner approach another table who had a patron (also of Latino decent) wearing a sombrero and a poncho, which I overheard were imported authentic items from Mexico. Apparently, the owner was offended the patron would wear that on this holiday in his restaurant, yet had no problem monetizing this day on the calendar with specials. The restaurant should be thankful there are patrons there celebrating the history of the cuisines birthplace instead of crying preference and sensitivity- especially for a venue who's social media pages claim to be progressive and all-inclusive. That table was not rambunctious nor loud, the check was paid, no credit cards bounced, but the mood was off because of the owners approach. If their money isn't good because of an unspoken dress code for a specific day on the calendar, I would like to see this enforced for those wearing green on St Patrick's, pastels on Easter, red white and blue on Memorial, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. As for the food and drinks, they're a slight cut above decent but if this experience is the cost of business, there is a plethora of Mexican restaurants to patronize in NYC. ¡SALUD! read more

This place is my second favorite Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg... (La Superior, their sister restaurant, is my absolute favorite). The food here reminds me of grandma style flavors, it takes me back to Mexico (my home country) in a super cool ambiance, as the owner is a DJ and music savvy. Enchiladas are muy favorite - suizas for the green salsa lovers or MOLE - and they touch my heart every time! The best tacos in town!!! Cecina, absolute favorite! Tinga, costilla , bistek, carnitas... uffff! For the veggie peeps hongos and rajas con papas are fantastic! Guacamole is a must and I LOVE the elote asado. Try the Caldo de Camarón when hungover or during a cold day. Aguachile and ceviche always great during summer days! The big tables are perfect for sharing and big parties. They're made of an old bowling place ;) This is the absolute gem of the neighborhood. Tons of style, great attitude, genuine food and flavor in every bite. I'd give it 3-3.5 stars for a decent Brooklyn restaurant, but after leaving, I really didn't know why I chose this one over the many other neighboring restaurants around. They have a wide variety of tacos that are all quite delicious (or at least the ones I tried), but they are a little small and aren't the best for sharing. The margaritas are good, but they are a bit overpriced for the size and for Brooklyn in general. This is the new, more relaxed offering from Felipe Mendez of La Superior and Cantina Royal. The space is filled with large benches where you and your friends can congregate over margaritas and small plates. I went with a skeptical friend who's husband had a horrible customer service experience at La Superior, and she was immediately won over by the food and service. We arrived around 7 on a weekday and it wasn't crowded at all. Felipe greeted us at the door, made some personalized recommendations (I'm a fish-eating veggie) and we grabbed one of the few tables in the corner so we could work. The waiter not only took our drink orders (the prickly pear margarita) but also got on his knees to adjust the rocky table. If you like La Superior's inventive yet traditional margaritas, you'll love these. We started off with a dish who's name I can't remember, but they were these little flour-based chips with Valentina and lime that Felipe said were a Mexican childhood staple. They were awesome. For dinner, I had the aquachile, which is like a spicy, whole-shrimp cousin of ceviche cured in lime juice. It ruled. I also had the pulpo (octopus) tostada and a fish taco, and my mouth wanted more. There are definite similarities to La Superior: Tacos come out family style on the same plate. The small, fresh tortillas that most restaurants can't seem to get right. But this has a very different vibe. The menu is more expansive. The vibe is more laid back and open. It feels like a spot that you go on a whim, and try something different every time. It feels like a place you'd want to linger, letting your conversation wander with your tastebuds. My go-to-spot for tacos in my immediate neighborhood - I love the ambiance of this place and the Pastor tacos are really good. They serve Chicharrones (fried pork rinds) with Tapatio on top when you come in - I prefer chips and salsa but its still something to munch on. They have long, communal tables and good margaritas. Oh My Word, this place is absolutely DELICIOUS! Why not 5 stars? The service was a little slow, but great! and the acoustics are just terrible. It's SO loud in there. Ok, cute little spot with bar and large long, communal tables with a few seats outside on a small porch. Checked it out on Friday night and were seated immediately. They also don't have chips but they do have complimentary Pork Rinds. MMMM. I went with the Palomas to drink and it was delightful and refreshing. They didn't skimp on the salt either - so delicious! It is tequila with a grapefruit-flavored soda -Squirt- and served on the rocks with a lime wedge. I went with the Al Pastor plate, which appeared to be a quesadilla, but wasn't titled a quesadilla - but who cares, IT'S DELICIOUS! And I also got another taco which was "salty steak" I forgot the real name again, so sad I didn't photog the menu, and this too was delicious. These are real Mexican portions so everything is small but they do not skimp on the meat. If I wasn't on my way out on the town, I could have stayed there and ate myself into a phenomenal coma.
