We always overpay during the year so that we always receive a large refund. We didn't worry about meeting the April deadline and told him so. Finally in July, he completed the returns. Our Federal refund was calculated at a mere $200+ dollars. We suspected something was wrong. We decided on a second opinion and the second accountant prepared our taxes with no knowledge of McGee's efforts. The result was a refund of about 15x the original refund. The key here was our depreciation schedules. We offered to obtain them from our retired accountant but McGee said no. Our second opinion accountant said, it's a must. They must have the depreciation schedules. We actually paid both CPAs for their time so experienced a "double hit" this year. We think that maybe he was not looking forward to preparing our return but didn't want to offend us. McGee is ok for less complicated returns. I just wish he'd suggested we go elsewhere instead of preparing our return and missing a lot of deductions.

Imagine my surprise when I did the exact same thing this year, I booked *over a week ago* for an appointment today at 1p at the Fountain Hills H&R Block. I walk in and notice a couple ladies wandering around but it didn't seem like any customers were there, it was very quiet. Cheryl Kenna, Office Leader sitting at the front desk, informs me she can't process my taxes today, asks why did I choose her office (because I live here in town) states she isn't qualified to help me (then why did it say online she has 6 years experience AND why was I able to book my appointment with her!) She goes on and on complaining about how "They have soooo many filings to process" (yes that's your job) and "She's down two processors" (ok but I booked with you, Cheryl, not someone who left!) Then she says she will email a lady named Mary Ellen in *Glendale* who takes her overflow (over an hour away) and see if she can help me virtually but "No promises" (I booked an in person appointment for a reason.) It's a simple married filing jointly case, no complex corporate taxes, no rental properties, etc. and I already had everything in their portal ready to go. Furthermore she didn't even apologize for dropping the ball! In fact, she goes on to say it's MY fault for "Waiting to the last minute" to file (last I checked tax day is the 14th and today's the 6th, I still have 8 days to go) and that "Everyone is up to their eyeballs with returns, she doesn't really know who can help me" (and you didn't even try!) I ask her why I'm being told this *now* when I walked in, why nobody called or emailed me the *week* before letting me know that I would need to make arrangements to see another preparer at another location? She shrugs says "Last time she called someone to cancel the man hung up on her, and she doesn't want to lose business." I say "Well what do you expect, if you refuse to process taxes, you aren't going to keep that person's business. Now I have to scramble to find someone else with availability around my work schedule!" She shrugs her shoulders again and gives me a customer service # to call if I want to lodge a complaint, way to pass the buck. I ask her to go ahead and call the lady in Glendale so I can get my next appointment set up, she says "She can"t call her, she has to email her, that's the H&R Block rules" then a man walks into the store. She then tells me "*I* have to wait, a customer walked in." I say no, I was your customer first, we aren't done yet, go ahead and send your email to this preparer in front of me so I know it was sent, finish waiting on me before you move on to the next person. Since you can't keep my appointment today I want another one in hand before I leave." Cheryl goes "Why don't you just call the H&R Block you used in the past?" I said that's down in Gilbert, I don't live there anymore I live in Fountain Hills. Then she tries to force me to use the online approval option saying she doesn't think anyone is going to fit me in. I told her I used it once during Covid and it was a nightmare, I am not comfortable filing taxes virtually, this is why I always set an in-person appointment. She refuses to send the email right there and says "She will send it today and someone will be in touch." Of course I didn't hear a word from anyone SIX hours later. I knew this would be the case. So I left and out of curiosity I looked online and it shows the Fountain Hills location STILL had TWO appointments available for today! Next closest location with an same day appointment was 45 min away in Phoenix, so I had to book my own appointment (thanks for the lackluster customer service Cheryl) and scramble over there to get it done on my only day off between now and tax day. Thank God that agent was professional and did what I needed to do in under an hour flat. Cheryl Kenna is condescending, unprofessional, rude, and frankly needs to retire if all she can do when confronted with her failure to give the simplest of customer service is to shrug. She could have emailed me, texted, called, anything, to let me know she can't process my taxes *before* I showed up to my appointment, fully expecting to, you know, process my taxes. If people are walking out of her office and going elsewhere, hanging up on her, and preparers are quitting left and right on her, makes you wonder WHY. She shouldn't be running that franchise if she doesn't know what she's doing-and by HER OWN admission she doesn't. Take your business elsewhere if you want your taxes done because clearly the Fountain Hills H&R Block location isn't interested in helping you.
