What happened? We were here since it first opened. It is a shell of what it once was. The food remains resilient, albeit spotty in consistency. Sloppy plating indicative of poor management oversight. Service is nonexistent. The inside dining area is unmanned and the personnel are focused on drive through. "Ambiance": the inside stinks of stale grease, floors and menus are sticky. I ordered a Beef Fajita Taco n Chicken Fajita Taco this Saturday afternoon. Both were very delicious, fresh, moist and savory with no dry, bland or off pieces. The beef one was excellent and super flavorful with a generous spice blend and just enough fat. The chicken one was obviously much milder, but still good for chicken fajita and seasoned enough. I went for a late night snack lastnight and picked up some steakhouse piled high nachos, and some tortilla soup. The nachos weren't as good this time around the cheese was a little too salty this time and the guacamole and sour cream wasn't that good either. What happened to this place. I remember it was so good here. I was in the neighborhood and I stopped in and no one was eating there. Staff was huddled at drive thru window talking not working. I waited a while before someone in the back came to take my order. I got chicken nachos. Chips were thin(that I like) but cold and broken pieces. The cheese was not how I remembered. It seems different now. Thick cheese that consumed the chip pieces and turned my dish into a plate of cheese mush. I had to poke around to find the chicken pieces. I went and asked for additional chips since my dish no longer had anything to pick up with my hands. Salsa bar had three sauces. I remember they used to have a lot more options in there. Alright, honest review here. I took a gamble on this spot cause the reviews here are less than desirable. Honestly I'm not sure what made me take a gamble cause I'm pretty risk-averse when it comes to my food. I don't like playing games. But I gotta say, this place was terrific. I ordered the burrito supreme and two tacos. The tacos were good but the burrito was nuts. Biggest burrito I've ever seen here in Houston. Taste was really good too. And they didn't skimp on the salsa cups. They gave me, like, 6 of them. Again, I'm not sure why the ratings are so low - or maybe I'm not sure why my experience was so good. The tacos were really tasty and came with homemade corn tortillas. The side salad was more like a caesar salad with shredded cheese. It's about $10. I chose an iced tea and they do have sweet tea and lime slices. I tried the tea before driving away. I didn't like it at all. I almost gave it back to attendant. I threw it away when I got home. I was still in another relationship with someone that is still my best friend. Barbie and I were friends before anything else, and while we hit it off straight away, it wasn't until many years later that we really realized that we wanted to hang out together a lot. So now we do. And it started... here. As for the food here, well what can you say that hasn't already been said. It's Tex-Mex and in some regards it's Tex-Mex at its best and its cheapest, but in other regards watch out because it is a chain, there are others in Houston, one in San Antonio, and elsewhere, and it does taste a little generic, bland, mass-produced and what not. And the servers don't really care, so a lot of the stuff here might be bad, and we've got sick here on several occasions. During my first threesome with Barbie, she puked all over the place (literally), not because the other girl wasn't hot (well that's debatable too), but because of Cha-Cho's. Oh, the memories. When people say that Mexican food can make you sick, they are usually talking about fake Mexican Tex-Mex, and this is the gold standard of food that makes me sick personally, but I still love eating it. So just be careful of that. Food poisoning and all. But in any case it's very tasty, depending on what you get - for example the breakfast food is great (Huevos Con Chorizo in any form), and the fajita is great. It's not really 5 star food, but with the memories and the 24 hours factored in, it has to get 5. So come and give it a try and see what you think. It's open 24 hours, and there are so few great places open 24 hours in Houston that just for that alone, I bumped it up from a 4-star to a 5-star. Now it's time to finish with a little more rap. Every time I come to Houston I make sure I make a trip to one of their locations. I ordered the bean (black bean) and cheese nachos with queso cheese and a large margarita swirl half top shelf half cool blue. The food came out within minutes of ordering. They were not stingy at all with the side of guacamole which I appreciate. They also have a self service salsa stand where you can help yourself to a wide variety of salsas my favorite was the cilantro ranch!!! The margarita was delicious but very strong due to the top shelf portion of the drink. You will definitely feel the effects of the alcohol half way through the drink. Looks like I never posted my original review. Now, some time later we're back. I didn't realize I'm so predictable. Same order for me. Taco Nortena and Black and white pile high Nachos. Still excellent. My wife went with a fish taco plate. Two tacos, beans, rice and small salad. Also quite good. It looks like they've cleaned up a bit, too. Floors cleaner, new chairs and the patio was also neat. That's good news for all their guests. Now, if we just ignore the health inspection from a year ago, we can enjoy with a clear conscience. That may be a big "if". I've always thought you get incredible bang for the buck as Chacho's. Their portions are huge. I watched a family of 5 struggle to get through a large pile of nachos. My wife ordered a taco bowl salad. A big deep bowl. But it was filled with rice & beans instead of lettuce. My tacos nortenas were stuffed with chicken, avacado, lettuce, beans & cheese. Note soft drinks are not self serve, so no free refills. So why only 3 Stars? Get your food to go because the place has become a dump. Chairs and benches with split/torn upholstery. Filthy floors. Outside tables littered so birds can bring friends and feast. No dining room cleanup. Restrooms designed for hazmat use. This place has gone way downhill since its heyday. Once upon a time (especially in the early years when Chacho's had just opened up their doors in Houston), I used to love Chacho's because they offered affordable food and they load up on the portion so you know you're getting your money worth. Fast forward many, many, many years later (because I don't remember what year they actually started operating), this is not the case anymore. My go-to order here, the steak quesadilla, used to be big, fat full of meats, cheesy, greasy, and delicious. But now, it's deceivingly big because the large size is only due to the large tortilla but not the meats. Just look at the pictures, if you cut away the excess 'skin', you're left with a pretty regular sized quesadilla. There's no more value. And what really gets to me is the fact that they often time forget to include the guacamole with my freaking order!!! Every single time I use the drive through, I'd have to open my box to make sure that the guac is included. When I'm lucky, I ask for it and they give it to me. But there are plenty of times when they just tell me "we're out". Seriously? If I were to place an order and ask for extra guac, are you guys giving it to me free of charge? Oh yeah, that's right. NO. So, if you're taking away my guac, am I getting a refund? Yeah, that's right. NO. Tell you what, the next time you guys are out of avocados (which you shouldn't being a Tex-Mex restaurant and all), why not put a sign on the drive through menu so we could decide whether or not we want to place an order? The customer service here is always such a nightmare. You have to beg rude people for your order, then it's still screwed up. The food is good & cheap, I guess that's why such terrible people work here, they cant afford to pay polite and/or trained people to work here, and so why management would allow it, you get what you pay for. I've probably been here more times than I can count and the staff either makes me feel like I'm an imposition, or that I'm bothering them. You can always assume that if you ask for a special order, it will come with "more than you asked for", in a bad way. Honestly, Taco Cabana or Taco Bell would save you headaches and annoyances. I've been living near this location for years now and can't believe I've waited so long to try them. Finally decided to visit with my family. The food was so good and plentiful. When we pulled in the restaurant sign stated that they were hiring and once we got in line I realized why. We waited in line at minimum 15-20 minutes and the line wasn't that long. One lady was taking orders and trying to tend all drink orders. Oh and they ran out of ice as well. Anyway, once we got through the chaos of line, we waited a short time for our food. The food did not disappoint and was slightly worth the wait. Lol. I ordered a small order of pile high nachos with fajita steak. The small was more then enough food for me. The restaurant was very big and spacious and the outside patio was a nice size as well. They have a bar, but for some reason it was not open. Where to begin with Chachos. Always looks on the dirtier side. Ambiance is old and run down, dingy look to it, but the food tastes wonderful and the place is packed, especially late evenings. I would not recommend bringing kids late night, because this place turns into somewhat of a club scene with plenty of thighs and cleavage at its peak. A lot of folks come here late night after clubbing for drinks and food. Chachos is pretty famous for its margaritas. We went on a week night around 10ish as I couldn't decide on where to eat and we were driving up n down on westheimer, just looking for a spot, until I set my eyes on Chachos. A lot of venues close up "dine in" by 10pm so Chachos was ideal. It was not busy at all, much to my surprise. After breezing through their menu chart, we went with a pound of mix fajitas. It is truly a pound and plenty of sides that come with it. Bowl of beans, potatoes, rice, guaca, pico de gallo, sour cream and the best home made flour tortillas in Houston. They also have this accessories' stand with plenty of different sauces, dressings, spices, and different types of pico etc. Always fun to customize your food. The fajita meat was excellent, bursting with flavor, tender n juicy. Beans were authentic. Felt like eating from a taqueria in Mexico and the flour tortillas were fresh and soft. Had a great time enjoying the fajitas. Another popular item that I see a lot of folks ordering are their nachos, especially the king size and believe me, its one helluva size. Chachos is known for its generous portion of food. It gets pretty loud at night and hard to find a spot inside. I usually prefer to sit outside on the patio.
