I've noticed the quality of the tacos can be a bit inconsistent between locations, but this spot consistently delivers, which is why I keep coming back. Interesting place for tacos. It's not in the best area of town and there were a few homeless people standing around the entrance of the building, but I guess these are the types of places where good food exists for a normal price. We just ordered a variation of tacos and something for the kiddos to share. I thought the food was good, but I don't care to return. It didn't meet my expectations from all the raving reviews, but I'm glad I tried and it put tacos in my stomach. I thought some of the meat were a bit dry and the combo platter was a little underwhelming. What made them fit for my taste though were the red and green sauces. Delicioso! The service was nice. Although most of the customers spoke Spanish, I still felt welcomed and didn't feel out of place. I found it endearing that families both young and old came here to eat together. I incredibly love this extremely casual Mexican restaurant! Again, I always try to go to spots that have plenty of parking, and they are located in a huge shopping store that offers just that. They have a huge selection of Mexican street food and plates. I had their flower quesadilla with bistec, an Horchata Agua Fresca, and two Barbacoa tacos. They have a front ordering window where you can pay and order your food, which is great for large groups. I am so thankful to live close to their location on Gessner. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city for both flavor and value. Their cochinita pibil sope at around $6 is one of the best bites in this entire city and rivals any $16 appetizer version the snooty authentic Mexican restaurants serve. Their menudo comes with fresh handmade corn tortillas and I love that they offer a small bowl so I have room for either a delicious crispy tripa or a al pastor taco! I love this place. The dining area is pretty large with plenty of seating so even though it was quite crowded when I went, I was able to find a spot easily. Here, you Order at the counter and pick up your food when it is ready. I ordered a large menudo: tasty with A LOT of meat inside: worth the price! The street tacos were delicious and they come with pickled vegetables which go great with the meat and tortillas. I also got the horchata. I was lucky to find booth seating. I would have liked to order tomatadas but being pescatarian, they come with sesina, a tender sliced cured beef. So I ordered cheese quesadillas on corn tortillas. They were good and the cheese was abundant. The food was ready quite quickly. There are two types of salsas at the tables, green and red. I didn't try any. Each quesadilla is about $3.40. The bread is slight crispy while soft on the inside, and they stuff the sandwich with your meat of choice, avocado and other goodies like beans and lettuce. Honestly, to today, I am still not super sure what is cochinita pibil, but I do know its delicious! The meat is juicy and flavorful. But be warned, the juice can get messy if you are not careful. On a separate occasion, I also got 3 tacos. I absolutely loved beef fajita and tongue, they are both flavorful and juicy. You see the theme here yet? Which is why it breaks my heart to say that the trompo taco I had was a little dry, though still filled with flavor. I absolutely love, love, love this place! Aside: fun story time. I was once here at night, a woman was walking around asking people for 10 cents. The only thing is that if you said no, she wouldn't leave your table she would just keep standing there until you gave her something. I wasn't having this so told her that she would have to leave us alone otherwise I'd call the cops. She called me several very rude words (the kind that starts with a c) but shuffled away. After I left Tacos La Bala, she followed me out to my car and started banging on my window. I just drove away but for anyone dining here alone or dining here at night, I would just be wary of your surroundings. And apparently don't threaten to call the cops, haha. None of the servers here really speak English so when I tried to explain to them what had happened they didn't understand so I'm not even sure they were aware of what happened. Back to the restaurant. I love this restaurant - did I say that already? Parking is easy; there's a large strip mall with a 99 cent store and a planned parenthood (so eclectic) so there's never a dearth of parking. Usually I get one right up front (helpful in avoiding homicidal women asking for 10 cents). The place has bars on the windows, and it's not much of a looker from the inside either. There's a selection of tables and booths that are already equipped with paper towels (which you will need) and red and green salsa. You walk to the back to order under this sort of hut; menus are up there as well. Barbacoa Tacos SO moist - I know moist isn't a very fondly looked up on word but in this situation it's absolutely positive and necessary. The flour tortillas, you can tell, are made fresh in house. Whatever I order I usually also order a 1/2 order of guacamole and top my tacos with this and the complimentary salsa verde. Beware - the salsa isn't for the light of heart, it's incredibly spicy and will have you drinking gallons of water but it is SO worth it. The kind of spicy where the flavors really come through; it's creamy and rich and silky. If you want, you can just buy the stuff and take it home - for less than $3! At similar restaurants like Ruchi's, a comparable jar of their less stellar salsa will run you over $8. I love the christmas decorations; very cute yet minimal. read more

Cheap and deceptively stuffed despite it's small size, served on a Bolillo instead of a "Telera". As in an oval Mexican roll (absolute heaven). The Cochinita Pibil here is one of the tastiest meats I've ever had. The range of salsas on the table (light green, dark green, red) combine to perfection. The light green is the best one, and the one to apply liberally. As I said, the star item and the reason I keep coming back is the utterly incredible Torta de Cochinita Pibil. Many of the pix I posted are of that. It's only five or six dollars which is ridiculous considering it's the best one you'll ever eat. They use a little bolillos made next door at Panaderia Tierra Caliente. Most places use telera bread for tortas which are big and fluffy, less crispy, less flaky, and not quite as tasty. The service is pretty good but it helps if you speak Spanish! There's a reason this place is always so busy. It deserves to be. Barbi Barbieri says: "Anything with pibil is delicious! The torta is super good! The charro beans are so tasty! I love this place so much, I could write them a Balad!" In conclusion: La Bala is simply the very best that there is. Tacos are my favorite, my personal favorite are chicharron (a little spice). Burritos are big portions, served with rice on the side. I would skip the rice plates unless you're craving for it. I specially come here just for cheap, fast food that are also delicious - the tacos (about $1.50-$2/taco). You order and pay the register, as soon as your beeper beeps, you go up to a different counter to pick up your food and to dine in. I have never order to go here but I do see a lot of people picking up their foods while I dine in. Also, you leave all your plates at the table after you're done and no tips (you can tip at the register). Everyone keeps raving about how these are the best tacos in Houston, so stopped by to see what the hype was about. There are two locations a few blocks away from each other in Bellaire, so make sure you know which one is your target if you order ahead. We went to the one that was hole-in-the-wall-ier because everyone knows there is an inverse correlation between taco and venue quality. First of all, I am absolutely astounded that they nailed our order for six people despite the fact that my wife delivered instructions over the phone in non-native Spanish. Major props to the staff. The excellent and huge Barbacoa Torta was a luxurious combination of juicy, salty, and creamy inside soft untoasted buns. The barbacoa was on the fattier side which definitely helped. The tacos were really solid and insanely cheap also, with hefty dollops of meat. 3-4 is plenty here, whereas I usually need ~5 if we're hitting up a food truck. The deshebrada (shredded beef), barbacoa, and lengua were all tasty but not especially tender, though I confess that we let them get lukewarm before devouring. Everything comes with onions, cilantro, and lime. My one major knock is that the salsa was flavorful, but didn't have too much bite to it. But you can't win 'em all.
