I usually have my hair done by Rosie, and she has always done a great job. Last December, Rosie wasn't available to do my hair, so I was referred to Sarah instead. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. I went in for a spiral perm, something I've been getting since I was 13 years old, so I'm very familiar with how my hair normally responds to a perm. After this appointment, my hair was severely overprocessed and damaged. I was also uncomfortable when Sarah made a comment insinuating that I was trying to copy someone else's hairstyle. I have never experienced this kind of damage from having my hair permed before. Months later, I'm still working on getting my hair healthy again, and it has not fully recovered. I'm sharing this because I think it's important to be careful about who you trust with your hair, especially when chemical processing is involved. I can only speak about my own experience, but unfortunately, mine was very disappointing.

Recently, my hair stylist left and she referred me to another stylist at The Iron Scissors Salon. Her name is Secelia Valdez and I have been extremely pleased with my haircuts. She is a lovely young woman (24 years old) who is working very hard to build her business. I highly recommend her! My haircut is not that complicated, but she added some layers and I am easily able to style it myself because the cut is so precise and good. I live in SLO, and found The Iron Scissor when I had a project on Yelp for styling a wig for a…read moreband performance at a Halloween Party. My band plays 80's dance rock so the girls in the band went as the B52's! My regular stylist was unavailable for this project and didn't know of anyone good who knew about synthetic wigs. I posted the project here on Yelp. Monica got back to me right away, on a weekend, (unlike 10 of the other salons I contacted) and gave me clear information that assured me she actually knew about working with synthetic wigs. She got me in and cut and styled the wig for my face. She then kept it to do the styling part. I wanted it to be 80's big hair style, tall on top and luscious hair around the back. I went back for the final fitting, and Monica had bought a stand for it and styled it. It looked so amazing!!! She taught my daughter how to put it on my head for the day of the performance. The color of it looked so good with my complexion... I never knew I could wear red. I decided to ask her for a color and cut just to get a chance to try something more red, because the wig red really complimented my skin and made me look younger. I asked Monica and she said if I went with an overall color change to solid bright red, it would take two processes, be really hard on my hair, and would require constant maintenance every 4 weeks. (More money for her, but she really wanted me to be happy. Another point for her in my book.) She suggested I have my current highlights, that were already lifted to blonde, changed to red, and then have new blonde highlights added this time. Then, every time I go in for my highlights, I can have the new blonde highlights from last time turned red, and new blonde ones added. She said my overall hair color would gradually become more red over time as more and more of the highlights become red ones. At the same time, because of how she did them, I wouldn't get crazy to deal with out growth every 4 weeks! That was a smart solution that I haven't ever heard anywhere else! I said "YES" and we started the process! Everyone loves my new hair color, and I love the shade of red she added to my hair. Needless to say, I already booked my next appointment with Monica at the Iron Scissor! Oh and my wig was a huge success at the Halloween gig! It looks so good, I've decided to wear it at our next performances too! 80's rock here we come!!! (The band is "The Random Ants") Everyone loves my hair color... both with the wig and without! This salon rocks!

I almost cried but I knew what I had done and it needed to get fixed. I called Edith to see if she had any appointments or if I could walk-in, she booked me in for an hour later. Edith was very kind and knowledgeable and complimented me on my cutting skills (which I am not sure it was a good thing since I am sure I will cut more next time ). Edith took her time, dried my hair and styled it. As I was leaving we talked about her plants and I gave her some tips while she told me about her plants. I will definetly be coming back :)

My consultation and first visit for cut and color was $185, Denise, the stylist, told me every visit after that would be $145. She also required cash only; my husband had to bring cash to her. All she said to that was, "Oh, I guess I should have told you that on the phone." My second visit-I came in with less services needed, as I got my hair cut somewhere else, so I did not need a cut and blow dry. So, I am thinking this should be less than $145, for less services. The lady before me was charged $145, as a side note. I do not think Denise was receptive to my haircut, as she stated it was uneven and got her scissors out ready to cut, but I stopped her, because it is supposed to be as it, is a symmetrical cut, thus my reason to get the cut somewhere else. I also told her the stylist who cut my hair told me to tell her to add blue to the dye to pull out the brassy red tones. I do not think Denise took it too well. She was pretty quiet during the color, barely conversed. After my color and dryer was finished, she came back somewhat energetic asking me what I did for a living again, which I found to be very odd timing. I got up from the chair asking how much, she said $200. I said I thought every visit was $145, she mumbled it was the color. That is what I had the first visit and more because I got a haircut and blow dry on top of color. It really bothered me, so I text her again to ask why the increase and she quoted different prices, ignoring the question about the stated $145. The texting went back and forth where she told me I only had a negative experience because of the price. Really lady????? It is because there was no communication on the price increase and not honoring the stated price of $145 or at least telling me the prices increased before the services, so that I could make decisions. I feel like I was discriminated and judged against and was charged more as a result. I work for a living and went to her because the prices were reasonable; how terrible to pull something like that on a customer. What a poor way to run a business and get more money out of people you think you can. I am going to file a complaint against this business so this does not happen to anyone else. Lesson learned the hard way, ask, even when you think you know, not everyone is transparent or ethical.
