Not my first visit but this time it was exceptional. Visited Chaia before a Sunday matinee at the Shakespeare Theatre in December. It wasn't crowded. Nice and warm inside on a very cold day. The salsa that came with the quesadillas were "meh" but the fresh ingredients melded so well that they really don't need a salsa accompaniment. Our tacos were delicious as they always are when we've ordered from the other location Georgetown. This location is much more spacious. They have 2 to restrooms that are clean, and outdoor seating is available, but they weren't set up today. I've seen it set up before though. The service was good, as we were greeted upon arrival and told "thanks for coming in" at our departure. The ONLY reason I docked a star is because I ordered my food online and chose a pickup time of 2:15 because that's precisely when mg arrival would be. My order was placed at 1:49, and the 6 tacos and side of beans were ready at 1:54. Don't get me wrong, it's obvious that they're efficient lol but I specified my time for a reason - I wanted fresh, warm tacos. My only suggestion would be to pay more attention to the time on online orders especially because the shells were kind of soggy and falling apart. If we didn't eat them there, they would've been worse off by the time we got home (25+ minutes away). Aside of that, great tacos and good service! read more

Are they really tacos? I'm conflicted. Are they really delicious? Yes. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in DC now. The food is legitimately "good." Extremely flavorful, obviously fresh and the service time is fast. This is not your typical taco place - don't expect to taste the normal bean burrito flavors. I tried the mushroom, sweet potato, & kale tacos. Each were good so it's hard to pick a favorite. The tacos kind of reminded me of other American dishes served up in a convenient wrapper. I would also say for all the non vegans out there, don't be scared! The meal is very filling and it gives you the pleasant, not weighed down feeling. I thought it was just okay. I've had a wide range of amazing vegetarian food from impossible burgers to vegetarian Bun Bo Hue Vietnamese soup. Personally I think India makes the best vegetarian due to the sauces they use. All those experiences got me excited for Chaia Tacos because everyone is raving about it. Must be good right? I tried three different tacos and unfortunately nothing blew my mind. I was expecting some sort of religious vegetarian taco experience that would send me on a rollercoaster ride of salsa flavors that I would not forget. I did not get that. I participated in an Outdoor Voices event in collaboration with Corepower Yoga at this Chaia tacos location in Chinatown. After the workout, I ordered their new breakfast taco and the seasonal butternut squash taco. Both came out very quickly and warm. The breakfast taco had eggs, beans, and cheese - pretty tasty but missing the wow factor. The butternut squash came with this cheesy sauce and micro greens - that one was really good! Butternut squash was seasoned well and cooked perfectly - not too hard or soft. I appreciate the plant-based idea behind this restaurant. Space is pretty spacious with nice lighting and cute decor. Each taco has a totally distinctive flavor, and they've really thought through the pairing of core ingredients with salsas and garnishes. The braised mushroom (front) came with a red salsa and some feta to give it creaminess, and the collard greens taco (back) had a really tasty paprika salsa with radish to cut through the heavier flavors. Bonus point for the house made tortillas, which were lightly browned in my dish. Ambiance: 8/10. I've had my eyes on this place for quite some time, and today I finally got the chance to stop in. It's a fast casual spot, where you order on your own using a computer screen, and your food is ready in minutes! Although I'm not a vegan/vegetarian by any means, the food is just as, if not more, satisfying. I went with the taco trio: choose your own combo. My favorite of the three was the braised mushroom, which was packed full and seasoned perfectly. I also was nearly stuffed with just the second taco, the creamy kale and potato - not a strong earthy kale taste, but definitely delish with pepper Jack and pickled onions. Maybe you like tacos, and maybe you're veg-friendly or veg and just can't get in the mood for tacos as much when all the choices aren't as healthful as fresh veggies. Ok, then this place is for you. I can go here, order a trio of tacos and not feel like I'm still hungry. If I go elsewhere, three tacos is what I order, but I don't feel as satiated because other places double the taco tortillas and skimp (comparatively speaking) on the filling. Once you order tacos here, you'll know what I mean. The braised mushroom tacos are my favorite, followed by the collard greens. These are no joke tacos filled with so much veggie and mushroom goodness, you might think you've died and gone to veg taco heaven. Seriously, so good. The mushrooms have a wonderful depth of flavor without being drenched in oil. The collards are fresh and crisp but have an exceptionally garlic flavor - vampires beware. However, please note that if you're a dainty taco eater and don't like to get too messy, ummmm..... don't eat here unless you're willing to break it apart with a fork and eat the filling first. There are people who will do that, I've definitely seen people with forks for their tacos. That's not my style - I like to eat my tacos without utensils. The staff were crazy busy handling a party order when we entered the place. We ordered on the computer and waited for 20 min till we saw one person prepare our food. She forgot to add vegan cheese to our soft tacos which we asked her to give. Then we found that the nachos and the enchiladas were tiny with no sides except some rice. The portions are kid size and may not be enough even for 1 person per main item if you are hungry. Next due to the quantities served,we had to buy few more sides to fill up our tummies but the computer would not work and the staff had to stop what she was doing to come and take our order manually. Next, The display pic for nachos on the order page had an additional Tahini dip which apparently is no longer a part of that order but the pic was not changed. This is not fair if they are selling a food item showing 2 sauces but only give your customers 1 sauce. Nacho chips are bland and tasteless and the quantity is good for a 6 year old to finish but not for an adult. There were 3 huge fans blowing air in the floor at multiple spots with risk of tripping on the cords and you will end up with flying tissues off your table as well as the receipts we got after paying were floating away as well!! But it's probably about a 3.5 for me and with so many options in Chinatown I doubt this will become a regular stop. None of them had particularly interesting flavor profiles. The collard green was my least favorite, a taco full of bitter greens without much else going on. The mushroom, while good, was very straightforward. Simply sauteed mushrooms and I believe it had goat cheese as well. The mushroom tacos needed a better supporting cast of ingredients. The feta and roasted tomato habanero salsa just didn't do it for me. I ended up scraping off some of the unflattering ingredients so that I could focus on the mushrooms. The asparagus tacos were hard to eat. I wish they had been cut up to make it easier to eat as part of the taco. I loved the carrot slaw with its colorful display of vegetables, tasty vinaigrette, fresh jalapeño and herbs. Yum! I was pleasantly surprised by the cafe au lait with oat milk. It was so good. My only complaint was that I hardly tasted the lavender. It is no secret, I'm obsessed with Chaia Tacos! There was a time when I went back not once, not twice, but FOUR times in a week to get my fill and I don't regret it one bit! I used to have to trek to Georgetown to get my fix but with their new location in Mount Vernon Triangle, I am able to fulfill my workday cravings all the time! This location is bigger and brighter than the original with an expanded menu that allows them to play even more with their farmer's market finds! The entire menu is plant-based and changes seasonally. Their creamy potato and kale tacos have a special place in my heart but I also love their mushroom, butternut squash, and roasted beet dishes are in house. Very colorful and nice with fried cauliflower, pickled vegetables, kale (Nothing can be termed healthy without Kale)! Supergrains, Tomatoes and a mixture of sauces. My boiled egg was purple, my only hope is the color came from beetroot otherwise I worked prefer my eggs to be a natural color. Great value for money. If I wasn't teaching that afternoon I'd have loved to taste the craft beer that's available there. Chaia is a vegetarian taco shop that's could easily convince the world to forgo meat. The tacos are THAT good. The sell 5 types of vegetarian tacos from creamy kale and potato to braised mushrooms. If you order a trip, it's $12. They also have something called a "beyond taco" that's like a taco pizza (let that sink in. #heaven). Once their liquor license is approved, they will sell a variety of beers, wines, and even sangria. The original location is in a small, historic building in Georgetown and it's gorgeous. Keeping the same design and style, the atmosphere is similar, but MUCH bigger. When you walk in, you're greeted by friendly staff. There's a large open room with plenty of tables and several long tables by the windows. You order your food and watch the staff create your taco. It comes out at the end of the line. If you love tacos, vegetarian or not, you must go here. Downtown DC is lucky to have Chaia here and it may be the best taco in the area. read more

The new location for this Georgetown veggie taco institution promises a slightly expanded menu, one which is still in progress as of this writing, but the tacos they're known for are plenty enough. Their vegetarian, seasonal, farm-to-table tacos are expensive, but worth it for those in need of a light meal. While the new location will never match the unique atmosphere of the little house on the canal that preceded it, this place is large and prominent, with signage in Mandarin befitting its Chinatown locale. The tacos were ready by the time I had finished freshening up in a very pleasant bathroom (an asset downtown, believe me). The more downtown areas of DC have never been much of a food destination, but the scene is expanding, and the only downside of stopping here is that you have to choose between this and a number of other promising new restaurants. read more

I visited twice as part of two different run groups so we got a free drink and/or taco each time. This already gave me the impression that this place not only wants to be part of the community but part of keeping the community healthy. The ingredients taste fresh and light. I love the braised mushroom and I generally forget what the other ones taste like bc the mushroom is so delicious. I'm always looking for ways to decrease waste, especially plastic, so I asked to have my drink in a glass and they told me that their cups are compostable. Based truly on first impression, Chaia is an excellent choice. The food is almost exclusively plant-based and there are lots of options to cater to vegan and vegetarian diets. Even if you dont ascribe labels to your diet, there will be something you can enjoy. I've tried nearly all their tacos and I will swear by the braised mushroom. While I didn't love every taco, there was nothing horrible. Just not my personal favs. I would absolutely offer that green rice as a side is a must! Decor is spacious, open and features lots of natural light. Perfect spot for a quick meal either indoors or outdoors. On my first visit, service was amazing! I wish I had gotten the young lady's name to give her a shout-out. Second visit was good though not as great as the first. Some of the best tacos (veggie or not) in the entire area. I've been to the Georgetown location many times since it's close to work and this location is pretty much the same (except slightly bigger). Got a taco trio, a taco duo (?), 2 chips and with the habanero pepita and tahini black bean dips, and an iced hibiscus tea. The tacos traveled very well and were perfect as usual. The creamy kale and potato is my favorite, it's very heavy for a taco which you wouldn't expect. The braised mushroom taco was also heft and felt meaty. The collard taco was nice and smokey. The tortillas were perfect, love how they're made in house. There were a lot of chips that came with the dips. The habanero had just enough of a kick that I was looking for. The tea was a little tart for me but it was almost like a refreshing cranberry juice. While walking to get coffee from Killer ESP, I noticed this new taco spot and decided to check it out for lunch later. When I came back around noon, there was a line and it took about 8 mins to get my order in, and another 5 mins for the food to be ready which was awesome. The place has plenty of seating but I opted for takeout which ended up being the trio (creamy kale and potatoes, braised mushroom, and roasted butternut squash) with a chocolate tortita and chocolate bar on the side. The tacos were excellent and pretty filling, with my favorites being the mushroom and butternut squash. Each taco tasted extremely unique and best part is that none were super oily. This is the second time I've tried tacos with no meat (first being fried avocado tacos at El Techo) and I can definitely see my self getting them again. The chocolate tortita was definitely not worth the price tag for me. It tasted pretty generic and was pretty small. The chocolate bar (73% dark chocolate) however was actually pretty good and it's made by Chocotenango. Not your traditional taco restaurant, BUT an excellent place for vegetarian tacos!! Very trendy and healthy, but still very delicious food. Staff are SUPER friendly. Cute, modern place with plenty of seating. Food comes out quick and fresh. I would recommend getting 3 tacos or 2 tacos and 1 side! I enjoyed my braised mushroom taco and chipotle sweet potato hash taco. LOVED the green rice!!!! Comes with feta, herb pesto and pepitas. Need to come back to try the other tacos! read more
