This theatre has been in existence for 90+ years and is now run as a non profit. I was happy to see they had sponsorship from many of the local businesses. They also host community and special events. They have one movie showing at a time and have limited showtimes compared to the big chain theatres. For movie snacks, they sell popcorn, pretzels, chocolates and locally brewed beer. Staff, like most in Yellow Springs, were very laid back. This is a special place and movie going experience.

Summer is here and they show a new movie each week with free admission to the youth of this community. Admission is cheaper than any other theater in the area. Tuesday is $5 admission on most movies. Everyday has a lower matinee admission price. The popcorn is always fresh. Concession prices are very reasonable. I do not know of any other theater that has cheaper. The theater is always clean. The restrooms are always clean and well stocked. Employees are polite and smile. There is plenty of parking.

This used to be my favorite theater, but my recent visit on National Popcorn Day was disappointing…read more I asked a simple question about the annual popcorn tub special, and the manager was unfriendly, gave a rude response, and made no effort to look into it. On top of that, during recent visits I've noticed the popcorn hasn't been as fresh as it used to be. Between the decline in quality and poor customer service, this experience was really off-putting. If this is the level of service being offered now, I'll be choosing Cinemark going forward, where the popcorn is better and the customer service is more welcoming.

I took my little cousin to see the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 movie and we got kicked out for being "disruptive". Manager claimed she heard my young cousin say "Hi Chica!" During the opening credits when the character flashed on screen and according to her, the character, Chica, "wasn't on screen." Wasted $30 to see 10 minutes of the movie. When I asked for a refund we were denied. We weren't given any warnings to settle down or anything. We got kicked out because of a single incident. A young child excited to see the FNAF movie blurted hi chica. We were seated directly next to the control box where the manager was so in her words it sounded loud. Are we so for real right now . Not to mention there were 4 other people in the theatre none of which complained or even turned around. One person chuckled. We were asked to leave 10 minutes after this incident occurred. So we gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited as another 20 or so people joined us or sat in their cars waiting. Several of us tried to call the theater and didn't even get a recorded message. Some called headquarters in Texas and of course all they could do was look into the matter. Quite a few of us had driven from other towns and would not be able to return for a showing later in the day. I suggest that when they are going to cancel a showing, they at least leave a message on their main number in Piqua and have someone post a sign on the outer doors so people don't just stand there feeling angry or frustrated because the WANT to see that movie. This was Part 3 of THE CHOSEN.

For our visit, they were showing the silent version of The Phantom of the Opera with a live orchestra. This was our first visit to this theater so we got there early to look around. There is a convenient parking garage located directly behind the theater and if you remember to ask, they will validate your parking ticket for $2.00 (we did not remember to do this so we paid $11.50 for three hours!!). They were showing this film on Halloween night, which was also a Friday night, so the University District was hopping! It was fun to walk around and see all of the costumes and various parties going on before heading into see our movie. Since this was a special showing it cost us around $55.00 for our tickets, but we ordered them in advance and were able to pick the seats we wanted. They allowed everyone inside the theater 15 minutes early, so there was quite a long line waiting once we were near the theater door. We saw others carrying soda and popcorn, but couldn't figure out where the concessions stand was! We were barely able to figure out where to find the bathrooms, so we gave up on the popcorn once the door opened for the movie. Once the door was opened, we went in and found our seats. Very comfy seats!!! We sat in the fifth row, so the screen was higher than our seats, but oh so cozy. The show was fantastic, the live orchestra did a smashing job! Very enjoyable visit!!

This time Gateway and the library are offering free "book to film" screenings all summer with your library card. Not too busy on Sunday mornings. Great staff. Basic snacks and drinks, plus alcohol. We were able to park right in front of the theater so I'm not sure how parking is if they're busy. The staff was plentiful for the low turnout, but to be fair it was an early showing (4pm) and the three of us were it! It was a Friday so I expected a little more turnout but the movie wasn't on at many theaters so maybe it wasn't as popular? Others near us had full fast food dinners and brought in blankets. There's currently some construction at the entrance, which might make accessibility difficult.

Lines moved fast, staff were polite, and the temperature was good. The seats were large cushy recliners in good shape. Wheelchair users should plan to sit in back or walk down the steps as there is room to leave the chair safely out of the way (which one of our number did) as it's all stairs down the aisle. It was a fun time out.
