I went to New Glarus for Polkafest and the Beer, Bacon, and Cheese fest and stayed at the Chalet Landhaus Inn for one night. The Swiss hotel is very cute and located less than 2 blocks away from the downtown area where the fests were. The hotel is also dog-friendly, which was important during our stay. I'm giving 4-stars because the hotel needs a little upgrading and my husband didn't care for the breakfast he had. The scrambled eggs were watery and there wasn't any butter for the pancakes. Also to note, our room was neat and looked clean but we noticed the recycling hadn't been taken out and I'm certain the shower wasn't cleaned before we arrived because there was a white residue all over the shower handle. Overall, I would stay here again because of the location, it's dog-friendly, and I loved the Swiss charm. read more

I want to leave a great review, but this hotel is extremely overpriced for the stay. Our AC did not work, and it was a 90 degree day. We had to bring it up to the front desk THREE times and they really could not have cared less. Sleeping was a nightmare as we were so hot and uncomfortable. Beds are very uncomfortable as well. Pool area definitely could use some repairs. Hot tub tiles are busted up, and sauna area was pretty dirty. It's an old hotel, and I can appreciate that, but for the price, they need to raise their standards. read more

Fabulous traditional Swiss restaurant with everything made from scratch. Everything is authentic and delicious- from the schnitzels to the spatzle. Incredibly friendly and helpful waitstaff. This is by far the best restaurant in New Glarus. Have a drink at the Alipli bar and then have a great meal in the adjacent dining room. You won't be disappointed. read more

Everything went well! We really enjoyed ourselves here even though we were here on Christmas night and were about the only guests. The two adjoining rooms we were in were much better than average. No carpeting and pets are allowed at an extra small charge. The breakfast was spectacular. Continental is free and got meals at a charge but very very reasonable and super delicious. Hats off to the clerk who checked us in, "Tom", who was informational and very helpful. He made our Christmas Day! read more

I stayed here last night, August 19. I lost the back of earning so I knelt down on the floor to look for it and found a pair of socks, a hair clip and a barette. The floor looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in a long time. I requested the manager to come up to look at it and was quite disappointed with the way he handled the situation. I told him it was unacceptable for the room to be this dirty when I paid $250 a night. His response was, I shouldn't talk to him in a negative way. Then, he told me I was lucky he was taking 10% off the bill. We will never stay there again ! read more

We stayed three nights recently for a wedding reception, in a king-sized bed room in their north building. Check in went smoothly, and all the staff we interacted with on our stay were knowledgeable, kind, and very genuine. The lobby area has a few couches and a table, as well as a small coffee station for guests to use. They also sell a few trinkets like magnets, key chains, etc. My only major complaint about the lobby area is that everything smelled a little "old" and dusty. Our room was okay. It had a strange set up that included a narrow hallway around the bathroom and a closet without a door. The bed was a true king, and we also had a small sitting chair, a desk, dresser, mini-fridge, and a television. The bathroom in our room was a bit small, so much so that the door just barely missed the toilet, but it served it's purpose. The bathroom seemed clean, and everything worked well. The room itself was VERY humid, despite the air conditioner being turned on. The humidity alone would have been one thing, but our room also had a slight smell to it, like a mixture of dust and mildew. We visited our friends' rooms, and they all had their own unique smells as well. However, none of the smells were so overwhelming that it was anything to complain about at the time. The bed itself was fine, nothing super comfortable but not too hard or stiff. The housekeepers seemed to come and go at the perfect times every day, so our room was always spruced up a little every day with a made bed and folded towels. I also appreciated the two Lindt chocolate truffles that were left for us on the first day of our stay. While there, we visited the pool area several times. The steam room and sauna work well, and were a nice little amenity that we weren't used to having at other hotels. The pool was nice as well. The hot tub was okay, but our first night there, the chemicals they used in the hot tub were so strong that many of our eyes and noses started to sting a bit. We also noticed there was a LOT of sand in the bottom of the hot tub, which was a little off-putting. The hinge on the top of the door leading to the pool was also dark brown and completely rusted off, so that it was no longer attached properly. For one weekday night, and two weekend nights (plus a $13 magnet), our total was just over $500. With the average hotel costing around $140 a night, this place does run more expensive than usual. I'm not sure the extra expense is worth it, to be honest, but there also aren't many other places to stay. I think they know this, and use it to justify their prices. Overall, our stay here was decent and the staff were the highlight of the visit. With a little updating and thorough cleaning (to remove musty smells), this could easily be a 4 star hotel. read more

This is one of my favorite places for a weekend getaway...period! My boyfriend and I are starting a "winter tradition" by coming up here during the cold, holiday months. We really enjoy the relaxed vibe and rustic/European charm. The staff here is very pleasant and it's always a pleasure to interact with them. I really appreciate that the inn has always been immaculately clean. There is no weird "hotel smell" and rooms are up to par. There is a lovely fireplace in the lobby which is great to relax by, with magazines to pass the time. We enjoy swimming in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub, and sweating out the toxins in the dry and steam sauna! Breakfast is also complimentary....usually there are eggs, rosti (a Swiss dish similar to hash browns but more delicious!), pancakes, fruit, croissants/danishes, and juices. That helps save some money in the morning! Directly behind the inn is a big bike trail/walking path and it's literally a couple minute stroll into town. There is a grocery store and gas station across the street/next door for convenience. Overall, we love this place and look forward to our little getaways. Highly recommend! read more

One of the best meals I have ever had! I had the wienerschnitzel with spatzli and it was perfect. The meat was fork tender and the spatzli was perfectly al dente. And the house salad was delicious as well. My sister had the walleye coated with potatoes. OMG, it was phenomenal! We also met the very talented young chefs. We stayed overnight in November and had an amazing time. The hotel is beautiful, well-kept and an easy walk to downtown New Glarus. We did the wine package which came with a delicious cheese tray and a tasting at nearby Baileys Run. We also got to try out the pool/whirlpool and sauna which were great. But the best part was dinner in the restaurant....we got the Filet Landhaus and the Almond Crusted Salmon - and would consider taking the three hour drive from Chicago just for dinner! Overall a great stay, and we will be back for sure! read more

Visited a friend in Wisconsin just a couple of weeks ago and stayed at the Chalet Landhaus. My good friend knew the owner being a young lady who grew up in the area and we ran into him one morning and enjoyed wonderful conversation. I arrived late, Michael Bell the manager answered and came back to the hotel to check me with after hours. We also enjoyed great conversation. After the long flight the last couple of weeks I was also able to upgrade to the jacuzzi suite, just wonderful! The hotel and the city were absolutely fantastic. Everyone should visit New Glarus... Switzerland in America, and the Chalet Landhuas. I very seldom take the time to write a review but this trip was so improved by the hotel, it staff, its breakfast, and wonderful dinners.. simply a truly wonderful experience! This thanksgiving spread was incredible!! Our server was very helpful and very kind. We had the Thanksgiving buffet...BUT, had to order a side of their spaezle and it eas excellent. The turkey dinner was a table of homemade American Thanksgiving dishes. We drove all the way there thinking it would be SO fun to have a Swiss-German Thanksgiving, but the German dishes were no where to be found. It does make me sad the German-American culture is losing one of its' important most important forums for our culture....our places too enjoy our ancestor's food. Truly disheartening. I hope this restaurant thinks about adding old world German favorites to a time of year that we willl be VERY thankful to have them! We WILL be back next year! Bravo! read more

What a disappointment. Do not waste your time. I called to see if I should make reservations to take my 93-year-old mother out for her birthday. I was told that no reservations need to be made on a Wednesday night because they are not that busy. Wrong answer! We walked in and there were people ahead of us waiting, the bartender told them to sit at a table in the bar and he would get them a drink because it was "going to be a while". He was slow, he was not personable at all, and my boyfriend asked me to go up to him, since we've never been there before, and ask him how long it would be. As I approach the bar he shot his eyes up towards me and said "it's gonna be a while, a long while before you get a table". Then he added that people showed up without reservations. I thought to myself, "are you kidding me"? I did not want to argue with him at that point. But I would've loved to of pointed out that I did call to make reservations and was told I did not need them. I could not believe the rudeness. The New GLARUS hotel is shut down. The Garner Stube is not open on Wednesdays. Where do they think people are going to go into GLARUS to eat? Should they not be better staffed? Should they maybe not encourage reservations when they were are the only Swiss restaurant open in the Swiss Village? We left and went to Sugar River Pizza. My mother had a great time. The waitress was friendly and bubbly and made our night. I will never again attempt to go to the Landhaus. I'm sure that we got done eating at Sugar River Pizza, long before we would have even been seated at the other restaurant. So in short, if you're going to New GLARUS, please bypass that shotty restaurant. read more

Stayed and ate here on a recent ski trip. The breakfast was oustanding, mostly on the strength of one dish: roesti. They are Swiss style hash browns. Never even heard of them before but now am making them at home. In addition, the breakfast sausages were tasty and much less fat in them than you usually get while dining out. I like that! Also had dinner here, and outside of the roesti that came with dinner, I would say it was just ok and several bucks too high for what you get. The hotel was nice and clean, we didn't use the pool or suana. I would use the hotel again in the future. Later learned the b-fast sausages served here were from one of the local meat markets, Hoesly's. We stopped by Hoesly's on our way out of town, and loaded up on brats, sausages, etc. Good stuff. Also stopped in Puemple's Olde Tavern and recommend that. Old hand painted murals on the wall, ask the bartender to tell you the story of how they came to be! read more

Watch out...I'm going against the grain here and say that we REALLY enjoyed the food here. Starting off with the special house salad with an array of Eastern European specialties like beats, potato salad, sour kraut, and greens in a house made ranch style dressing. So good. Then had the geschnetzeltes (veal in a mushroom sauce) was incredible. Add the spatzles (Swiss cheese dumpling) and it was great. We also has the potato bacon soup that we really enjoyed. My son had the kids spagetti with this smoked like sauce that was to die for. Kind of a chipotle flavor without the spice. He ate all of not which is unusual for him. Finally, we had the Oreo chocolate cake which was good and surprisingly moist. Of course...it doesn't hurt that they had a great selection of new glarus brews that you can enjoy there or take to go. I stayed at the Chalet Landhaus Hotel but just stopped in the restaurant for a drink on the way out for dinner. Can't vouch for the quality of the food. I loved the woodsy, homey feel. I felt like I was in the living room of a log cabin. The bar had two New Glarus beers on tap, Spotted Cow and Two Women. The Two Women keg blew but it was quickly replaced by the chef in the back. You can tell that the workers here are a team and take pride in what they do. I enjoyed watching the chef cook some delicious meals from my spot at the bar. We stayed here for one night. The lobby is nicely decorated, which gave me some hope for our room. We got on the elevator, and it has a very strong musty odor- it stinks. We walked into our room and it also has the same strong musty odor. The first thing I did was opened the windows. Our waitress at a nearby restaurant asked where we were staying and she said we should've stayed at an Air BnB. I couldn't agree more. It probably was nice in the 60's/70's. Now, it's old and dank. If you have allergies to dust and mold I would not recommend. Staff was nice, the free breakfast I would pass on. McDonald's is better. I'm now washing all of our clothes in our suitcase whether or not we wore them, and sanitized our suitcase for fear of bringing that old dank smell into our house. I made this reservation based on the other reviews which were great-that couldn't be further from the truth. Also the pillows were absolutely horrible- flat as a pancake when you use them. Due to lack of cleanliness and updating it will slowly deteriorate and have to be razed. Even if someone bought this place right now today it would be too costly to renovate due to poor upkeep. read more

Only experienced dinner here. Quite expensive for 2 of us. Had 2 menus- prices for a large bottle of locally brewed Raspberry beer differed on each. Sign above the bottles for sale said $18, my menu showed $18, husbands showed $20. When questioned, waitress went to check, came back and told us it was $20 to buy the bottle and $22 if we drank it there... Huh?? Luckily, the gas station was selling it for $10.99!! The food was ok. Sadly, husband's "Veal Princess" was inedible to him. The breading was doughy and undercooked. Appetizer of cheese curds came out about 3 minutes before the dinners. Wasn't impressed with them. I'm surprised this place only has 1 review, and a 2 star at that. We live somewhat in the area but I had never been here before. Super cute, authentic restaurant. If you like fondue or schnitzel, they have a great selection. Like the last poster, the salad wasn't my kind of salad but my husband absolutely loved it, he ate both of ours. It's traditional, greens with potato salad, pickled beets and pasta salad. For sides we had the fries (standard) and spatzeli (? - potato dumplings), those little dumping things were addicting and amazing. I had the chicken gruyere which was really good, my husband had the schnitzel ala Holstein and he loved it, he loves anchovies so it was right up our alley. When visiting New Glarus to visit their wonderful brewery, my boyfriend and I decided we would stay in town for the night, so we could bar hop and drink all the New Glarus we could get our hands on, since it's only available in Wisconsin. The only choices we really had were this hotel, or the motel down the road - being the lesser of the two evils, we chose the hotel. Walking in, you feel like you've been transported to a different country, and probably a decade ago, at that. The room was clean enough, but the bed was HARD, and the bedding cheap. There was a tiny crappy TV in the room, which we couldn't fix to make the picture any clearer. The heat was unbearably hot, but each room has their own controls, so we turned ours almost to cold - I guess which is better than it being too cold, since it was in the single digits while we were there. The whirlpool was out of order while we were there, which stunk - there was also a pool, but we didn't check it out. The bar and restaurant also happened to be closed the night we stayed (on a Monday), so that was also a disappointment, as it would have been nice to sit in the bar later in the evening rather than be out in the cold. The hotel is close to the "downtown" area of New Glarus, so getting to the few bars and restaurants in the area was quick and easy. With your stay, you also get a free continental breakfast, or $2 off something off their breakfast menu. The continental breakfast looked okay - lots of pastries, cereal, fruit, etc, but nothing warm. I opted to order an omelet, which was pretty good, considering it only cost me a few bucks with the coupon. Overall, it was an okay place to stay - my biggest pet peeve was the price point. For this type of hotel, I would have expected $50-$60/night - but they wanted over $100! Are you crazy?! I guess they can charge what they want, though - seeing as the only other place we could find to stay was the motel down the road - which I'm sure, would have been worse. But seriously? When you're charging people that much, please take all the money you're making and make some upgrades - new beds and linens to start, as well as some better TVs. We probably wouldn't stay here again - and opt to drive a little further and stay in a bigger town with a few more options. read more

The hotel is adorable! We had a king bed, whirlpool suite. Everything was clean, and the floors as well as the bathroom had been recently remodeled. The restaurant served a hot breakfast, included with our stay. They are doing a good job of accommodating during COVID. I wish I would have known ahead of time that their indoor pool was open by reservation more or less, but we will be sure to come back and take advantage of that. read more

Went to the buffet. Walked in to the restaurant about 5pm to find the restaurant empty but the hostess said we couldn't be seated without reservations. A teenage server admonished the nitwit hostess and did seat us. The food was decent, I couldn't tell the difference between Swiss and German food though. Skip this place and go somewhere else, not worth the price and I have heard from others that the service is more typical of what we received from the hostess. read more
