Second trip to London we took the London underground from Heathrow to Holborn all along the Piccadilly line without transferring. 23 stops along the line but we we were seated the entire time carrying day packs and one carry-on luggage each.. The cost was the equivalent of $7 per person. If you are coming from Heathrow airport during rush hour you can take the Heathrow Express directly from the airport too Paddington station. For two people this would be about the same Fare as Uber. And you would still have to get from Paddington station to your central London hotel. In our case we could have taken the Elizabeth Express from Heathrow airport to Tottenham Court road station and walked the mile to our hotel near Holborn underground station. The fair would have been about double that of the London underground. Both of the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line are more luggage friendly. Compared to the London underground. The London underground has contactless payment. You simply scan your credit card on entry and scan the same credit card on exit. Seats seats are cloth with armrest. People with oversized luggage can put your luggage near the doors in special areas. is not advised during peak hours was standing room only. Unlike New York City most London stations have working escalators making it possible, but not easy, to carry luggage on the trains. Make sure you put your luggage on its side. One person put his luggage on his wheels in the luggage area but the luggage rolled out the entrance on its own at the next stop.

London Underground is certainly cheaper than a taxi or uber, and we had no problems finding room on the trains with our luggage (two people, each with a carry on). Announcements remind you to "mind the gap", and the stations we visited were staffed and welcoming. One even had an inspirational quote up. As expected, some stations are more modern than others since they are utilized more. I loved that I could tap my credit card to get through the gates onto the train, rather than buying a physical card or downloading an app. I wish the DC Metro used this system.

I purchased tickets in advance, £10 one way (£25 on the spot). They're on time. The interior is clean. The seats are comfortable, although a little old, with charging ports.

This is by far the most convenient option from London proper to Heathrow Airport, but you'll pay for that convenience. Where you could reach the airport via a local train for much less, shell out the 20 - 25 pounds per person and you can ride on a direct train with zero stops. The train runs nonstop from Paddington Station, which is easily accessible by Tube. It leaves roughly every 15 to 30 minutes, but there are frequently closures and delays so make sure you allow plenty of time for your journey. In the 4 times I've used this service, twice it's been cancelled and I had to take the regular local train, so be aware. The train stops at Heathrow but the walk from the station to the terminal is quite far (allow at least 20 minutes, and even longer if you are slow or have a ton of bags). Also make SURE that you keep your ticket out because you have to scan in AND out once you reach LHR station. The train itself is nothing fancy, but they have free wi-fi and luggage racks for the short journey. The seats are comfy enough. They often run specials, so make sure you check our their website. Sometimes there are deals if you buy group tickets and it's cheaper if you purchase your tickets far in advance. This is the easiest option to get from the city to LHR by a mile.

I love this bus because it is regular, quick and doesn't fill up with the late night fools that have had one to many WKD Blues. Cutty Sark (aka Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich) is the closest station for accessing the…read moreNational Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory. It is on the DLR system between Island Gardens and Greenwich in Travelcard zone 2/3 (you get charged for the cheaper journey). This is a deep station, with at least two escalators. There might have been a third I missed. Like most of the DLR, this station is step free. There is a lift ("elevator" to Americans). There are also a pair of cashpoints ("ATM's") in the station near the ticket machine. Note that there are no ticket barricades at Cutty Sark. You have to remember to purchase a ticket or swipe your Oyster card. I have seen ticket inspectors on board the trains!

Don't get confused: Victoria train station and coach station are a few hundred yards apart along Buckingham Palace Road, a level walk that'll take about 3 or 4 minutes. It serves as a terminus for many medium- and long-distance coach services in the United Kingdom and is also the departure point for many countryside coach tours originating from London. Running from Fulham Broadway to Liverpool Street station, the route takes in a whole load of classic sights, as well as useful transport hubs such as Victoria coach and train stations, and Sloane Square, Charing Cross, Mansion House and Bank railway/tube stations. It was even better when they used the old Routemasters, but you still get a great view from the front of the top deck. If you go straight through, the off-peak journey time is around an hour end to end, although most people are likely to travel between Victoria and St Paul's. The route starts in Fulham Broadway, and then travels the length of the King's Road in Chelsea as far as Sloane Square, when the sights begin to really start: the Chelsea Hospital, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square and the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall (passing Downing Street and Horseguards Parade), Trafalgar Square, the Strand, the Aldwych (with all its churches), the Royal Courts of Justice, St Paul's Cathedral and the Bank of England. Not bad for a single fare of £1. At various times I've used this to travel to and from work when I worked in Whitehall. The frequency in my experience tends towards the lower end (ie every 10 minutes) although it has improved in recent years. Still, it's a great way to see lots of sights for very little cash, and if you have an Oyster card or travelcard, you can use it as a hop-on, hop-off service.

The Piccadilly Line runs through Holborn. Massive escalators carry people up and down to the train levels. Walls are lined with theater ads. Tap on and off with a credit card is easy. Coffee and pastry vendors stand outside the station.

If given the choice between getting off at the Holborn Station or Covent Garden, STOP HERE…read more The Piccadilly Line takes you from the airport directly to the strand, but it's best to stop here. The Covent Garden stop is a mess and with luggage, you'll need to wait in a crowded section to use the lift rather than walk up the numerous stairs. Just so messy. The Holborn station is so much less busy and so much more pleasant.

With new trains, the Victoria Line is probably one of the better lines on the London Underground…read morealongside the Jubilee Line and Metropolitan Line and perhaps could edge it to be the best line on the network - despite having just 16 stations it still has great access around the city and is a line popular on a Tottenham Hotspur matchday as it provides access to Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (still a good walk however and horrific on a matchday). It is the light blue line on the tube map and quite new compared to the other lines on the Underground, as it opened in 1968 and spans 13 miles. Interestingly, the Victoria Line took a further few months to expand to London Victoria. It was then opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode from Green Park to Victoria. Many stations do have step-free access and are quite modern some step-free stations include: Tottenham Hale, King's Cross St. Pancras, Green Park, Victoria, Vauxhall and Brixton - this means you can hop off a train at Euston Road (head to Kings Cross St Pancras for step-free or Euston) and then go onto Green Park, where you can then get the Jubilee line to continue your journey throughout central London, the same being said for Victoria which is close to Westminster and serves the train station of the same name. Most Victoria Line stations do serve others meaning it is pretty easy to hop on and off another tube depending on the construction of the station - I personally found Green Park to be much longer to get in-between two lines just to name one. The most intensively used line on the Underground also means trains are pretty frequent and modern which is a bonus - odds are if you're using the Underground you will be using this line as part of your journey across London, and for the connections across other lines being much better than any other line combined - I feel this has the edge to warrant my highest rating for any London Underground network of four-stars.

This was our 3rd visit to London and we just loved this station and it's dual, very convenient…read morelines. First, the Piccadilly is direct from LHR. So that is already a plus, no need for the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth Line. You have access to Cromwell Road for a short stroll to the Natural History Museum & the V&A. Stores in Kensington, north to Kensington High Street, Notting Hill is walkable, you can head west to Richmond etc. The station is also completely accessible, where you do not have any steps from platform to street, which not every station can say. Right outside of the station are a few fast food stores and pubs. That side of Cromwell is not particularly lovely, but when you cross you can feel that it is more residential and less commercial. With the Piccadilly & District Lines together, you can navigate to many areas of the city. I liked staying near Earl's Court and preferred it to the more Eastern parts of the city near Tower Bridge or Shoreditch.
