This is one of those places that is just not great for tent campers. The "tent" site we were supposed to stay at didn't even have a spot to put our tent- as it was covered in a giant bush. We opted to release the reservation and go back towards Stanley for a better camping experience. If you're an RV camper of a certain demographic- this might be a great place- but it was not for us. The website needs to be more clear on their "tent" sites and what is available before next summer. Staff is nice, and the RV section looked well Maintained, but the tent sites again- problematic. read more

Great state park. Cost $7 to come into the state park if you are not an Idaho resident and don't have a yearly pass. Then you pay $10 to swim in the pools. I had the pools to myself for an hour before others came. Both have a rock bottoms and steps to get in and out of. One is small and hotter, the day I was there it was 105 and the larger one was 95. Changing room at both. Toilets at the larger one. With the $7 you can to two other areas nearby (Land of the Yankee Fork & Bayhorse). The staff was friendly. The is also camping and RV spots. I believe if you do either of those you can use the pools as well. I would come back if in the area. Great find. read more

Hi We are from Boise, Idaho. We stop there one night. We were in Montana all week. This place very clean, quiet and the pools is amazing. I met cute little kitty cat. Cat just love roll on the grass. Just following me around. This that day we got a huge thunderstorm, lightning and rain. I noticed something else is missing. We been wanting fill up our bottle water. There is no water we can fill up. Ended up I have to dump it out. Water aren't as that great. We didn't stay in pool very long. I noticed there is no showered. All is we Found a dressing room. I read the rules on wall and sure very strict rules. The water is way too hot for us. Where is cafe we can grab a coffee and breakfast. We left that day at 7:30 am. No one is in office. We will be back again soon. Really need an extra potty house end of campground. We have to walk over pretty much as far away. Wish we have extra chairs. We have move picnic table and we can sit on. We saw bunches of fish down stream. We catch one nice fish. We have throw it back in water. I saw 5 deer across stream creek. There is lot things needs be done.. we really enjoy pool water. Hot water house we didn't stay in soak and it was hot. So we went back other pool. We couldn't find a trash area to throw away. We found the trash front of the barn. Week of September 20th-25th. We are here again, just as lovely, new owners are awesome. Shana is awesome, very friendly. We have a great spot on the river. Sooo peaceful. love it. Love this place. Nice and quiet and the hot pools are amazing. Such a beautiful property. I am here alone and I feel very safe and secure. When I got here I did not have a water hose long enough as the water is at the back of the site and you share a site with someone else. "Marine guy", in the office was very nice and helpful. His son brought me a hose to add to mine. Cell coverage is perfect, WiFi is excellent. I love this property. I will definitely be back. Salmon river is gorgeous. read more

My husband and I met some family here over the 4th of July weekend. I'm not huge on developed hot springs, however there weren't many camp spots left around Stanley, and we wanted somewhere midway in between Montana and Western Idaho so Challis it was. The campground was very neatly kept, and there were fire pits at pretty much our site. The pools were subpar, one was about 95 degrees and the other, smaller hot pool issued at about 104 degrees. It just felt like swimming in a hot pool. The pools were constantly hogged by greedy soakers who don't know how to share. As an avid outdoor adventurer and serious soaker, I can't appreciate a place that doesn't enforce basic hot springs etiquette. This is why I try to avoid developed hot springs. They don't put any value on the experiences. It's all about money money money. Another complaint was that the host tried to swindle more money from my husband and I, even after my wonderful in-laws had already paid for all extra bodies that would be at camp. She was very friendly when we checked in, but she must have misunderstood us or saw a chance for extra money, because we said we were meeting parents here and everything was already paid for. However, she insisted we had to paid either $29 for our own site or $20 if we shared because there was still an extra charge for additional people. Gratefully, she allowed us to visit the site and meet the parents to discuss what we wanted to do. Our parents confirmed that there should not be any additional charge as they had made sure everybody that would be present was already paid for. We ended up not going back to the office because I didn't want to argue with the host. She either figured out her mistake or forgot about us because she never tried to look for us again either. That felt like she was just trying to fish more money out of us, and for that I had to knock down another star. Three stars because I did have a good time with family and the campground itself was very nice. read more

This is an awesome spot to bring your camper and the kids. Lots of fun hiking and the hot springs are amazing. There is a pool and the kids were happy as could be. The only drawback, the mosquitoes were out of control and made it almost unbearable to be outside while they were out. Great people work here. read more

Peaceful Paradise We called on Thursday and they miraculously had space for Sunday and Monday. We were looking for a place where we could get a good shower after days of heat and lots of bug spray; we found a kind of paradise. Once we got here we were so happy that we asked for another night in the same space and they had another night available! How lucky is that? Access is from a well-marked turn off the highway, 4miles down to the end of a country road. The gates take you through to beautiful flower beds and rustic old farm plows on display in front of the bed and breakfast. The desk person was welcoming, kind, and informative; she explained the setup for showers, the warm swimming pool, and the hot pool. Since we are having the luckiest, most amazing road trip ever we lucked out on THE MOST BEAUTIFUL site we could wish for (site 23, their "most requested site"). The level site is shaded by cottonwoods and sits above the gorgeous Salmon River. All of the rv sites on the left and the far end along the river would be great choices with several long enough for the biggest rigs. The middle of the loop is a well maintained grassy meadow with trees for shade near some of the spots. They have some long sites for big rigs that are set up as 2 sites. If you are there first or leave last it would work as a pull through site, otherwise you'll have to back up one way or the other. (See the map on their website) Leashed pets are allowed which was a good thing for us traveling with our cattle dog. Polite dog people and great maintenance meant we didn't encounter leftover poop on our walks. As far as we could tell no one left their dogs unattended either - no barking dogs, just friendly pooches. The tent sites are located in the mown, grassy areas back a little from the sites with hookups. Several people used tents or other setups in the rv sites so they had water and power. Lots of space. The views are spectacular. The little store has basic goodies and some T-shirts. You can get ice and wood there. Free wi-fi available. The hosts are friendly and do a fine job maintaining those surprise, fabulous flower beds (lambs ear, daisies, hollyhocks, lavender, mullein, sunflowers). The showers are basic and included in the park fee, as are the hot pool and swimming pool. The pool! It is clean and warm (around body temp). They drain it each night so the water is fresh and inviting. They have dressing rooms and a separate shower/bathroom space as well as a covered, gravel sitting area. When we were there it was quiet with no more than half a dozen people at a time - not a splashy, loud, crowded place because it's summer and the Salmon River is right there; plus, many people went out (respectfully, slowly, quietly) on dirt bikes or ATVs for most of the day. The RV campgrounds in the town of Challis were right along the highway and I would only stay there if I had no other choice (but this is central Idaho and i have a million choices . . .). This is not a corporate, squeeze-them-in-there place. It is family run, spacious and well cared for. Challis Hot Springs is just far enough out of town to feel a little wild but close enough to go get supplies and the best sweet potato fries and local burger ever (Y Inn - but that's a different review). read more

A great campground and hotsprings. The owners are very professional and keep the place exceptionally clean and well-organized. We stayed two nights here in a tent spot as part of a trip to climb Mt. Borah (35 min away) and it worked out well. Very comfortable and convenient, and it was great to soak in the hotsprings after the long climb! read more

This place is great. The hot springs pools are great to relax in. One that's hot hot and another larger one that's good for family as the temp is not as hot. The people here running the place are friendly and helpful. There are play grounds, volleyball nets and things to do in the campground. Burn pits and picnic tables in great shape. Wow,,, AllI can saw is just WOW!!! This is a beautiful campground, lots of grass, right on the edge of the Salmon River and a lovely red rock hillside. The camp sights are spacious with hook ups, but lets get to the real reason we came - the Hot Spring Pools. WOW!!! We have been to many hot springs on our travels and this one is at the top of the list. The main pool is huge! I mean HUGE!! The temp is 98 degrees which allows you to stay in for hours. It is 4 feet deep with a smooth pebble/rock bottom, My husband enjoyed the rocks on his feet, he said they felt wonderful. I spent the time swimming and twirling and allowing my body to loosen up. Absolutely heaven! There is a smaller pool at 107 degrees for soaking. Very nice bathhouse for changing and bathrooms at the pool. We arrived on a Friday night, check-in was flawless. We also purchased some wonderfully fresh eggs from Mike's local hens, $2.50 a dozen (unheard of low price where we are from). We camped in early June and to our delight, it was not crowded for a weekend - which meant we were often the only people using the pool, which is open 8AM-9PM. We so enjoyed sitting outside, shade trees, a lovely little breeze, relaxed and peaceful... the raging river lulled us to sleep. Helpful hint: go eat at the Teacup in town - DELICIOUS!! read more

Stayed 2 nights in the tent camping area. Recommended to anyone traveling the Salmon R. country, or looking for a quiet hot spring to soak in in Idaho. The tent sites are large but some of them are between the RV sites and the restrooms and pools, so there's a bit of foot traffic around. Showers are a little primitive (only one temperature!), but good enough. The two pools are great. The hot pool is ok for about 10 minutes. The warm pool is the right temp to stay in for as long as you want and even for some light activity (there's enough room for swimming). The water is clear and clean, with no scent. Gravel bottom is nice, too. The pool officially closes at 9PM, but the manager came around before then and said he'd leave it open for a while longer. It was a beautiful starry dusk, and an owl landed on the light pole. Not much hiking in the area, unless you want to drive a bit. The Tea Cup restaurant in town is worth a stop, but check if it's open. read more

I actually cried when I had to leave. This is one of my favorite places on earth. It's a little rustic but none the less, a quiet, peaceful place. It's rustic, yet has electric and water and what rv park has a hot springs right on site. It was so convenient. Town is just a short distance away with everything you need and the best part, right on the river. Employees are very helpful and kind. I hope we can return here again soon. read more

We love this place! My husband and I make a point to come here at least once (sometimes twice) during camping season. It's a bit of a drive from Boise - but this quiet, friendly place is worth it. The new managers seem to have found their groove. Making the reservation and then checking in all went smoothly. We knew the holiday weekend would be busy - but the other guests have all been courteous and not annoying at all (coming from someone that doesn't like most people). We really like the additional spaces they've created. Our new pull-through spot is perfect - with a great view of the river right outside. And the cooler temps make the two pools that much more enjoyable. We might not be locals - but we appreciate the hard work that goes into running this place. We'll definitely be back next year. read more

Don't go there. The water in the Salmon River is notoriously contaminated with that special "stuff' that makes you want to call it home forever. The folks that run this place will try to get to know you and provide you with activity options that you really enjoy. I miss them already. If this sounds horrible, stay on the highway. read more

This is a real find for a little known, but excellent hot springs, and bed & breakfast! Two outdoor pools, one larger and warm, but not too warm to swim in, and a second one that is warmer, for soaking in. Everything is very clean, and well maintained. The bed and breakfast were a delight, in a big 1890 house, with a separate, very nice building for dining at breakfast, or relaxing at any hour. The folks running the place there are friendly and fun to visit with. Very affordable at about $100 for a room for two, a great breakfast, and use of the pools. Couldn't recommend it more highly! read more

Under new owner./management. I use to frequent this place alot, back in the day it was nice and friendly atmosphere, not anymore. This current management is anti-children and a money grubber. Expect to pay for everything, including the air. If you want to bring a child in you have to pay for a campsite, plus 8$ for each additional person beyond 2, and then pay for the use of the pools, towels, and bathing suits. They insist that you use their disgusting bathing suits. But since this is Idaho, Hot springs are everywhere and free. read more

I have gone to Challis Hot Springs since I was a child (30+ years) and have loved it. We came in July for our first trip since 2013 and I have to say that the customer service went downhill. We were driving from Yellowstone and experience some unexpected traffic/construction delays so we called to see if we would be able to check in around 9:00pm, which was the time our GPS was showing. The nice woman on the phone said that would not be a problem and to call if we experience any other delays. She was understanding and kind, just as I would expect from this fine place. Well, there was a lot of smoke from a fire as we were driving and it caused our car to overheat so we had to pull over for a few minutes. We called at 8:00pm to let them k now that we would be 15 minutes later. No answer. We left a message and tried calling several more times. We got a call back at 8:30pm telling us that check in time ended at 8:00pm and the gates were locked. No exceptions, we had to find somewhere else to stay. We had 4 adults, 2 small children, and a dog. Finding a place to accommodate us last minute in a small town in July was difficult and I cried quite a bit when it was looking like we were going to be sleeping in the car . I have never encountered such a thing with a campsite. No empathy at all. When we were able to check in the next morning, the woman checking us in was very nice, but offered no apologies. They also do not allow you to drive to your campsite yourself. You have to wait for Bubba to show you the way in his golf cart. The campground is not that big and all spaces are clearly marked. That was odd and their approach to it felt less like a welcoming gesture and more like that they do not want customers. They did this with everyone that arrived. We also noted that night that plenty of workers were there past 9:00pm and that some live on site. We were also accosted at the pool the second day asking where our wristbands were by Victoria. We did not receive wrist bands at check in, though they have given them to us in past years. Then she essentially accused us of trying to sneak into the pool. We told her we have been here since the day before and are camping on site. She finally let us swim with a cautious, "I guess I will just have to trust you" negative attitude. Another older woman there said that she had been appalled by this service and suggested contacting the owners. It is such a shame that this service marred such a beautiful place. If I had to guess, I would say that they are trying to change this campground into a corporate model and become larger. I would caution them not to forget the service that has gotten them this far. I also hate to say this, but my tradition of going there is over. I have told my family and friends our experience and have cautioned them from staying here. Sad, disappointing visit to an otherwise wonderful place. read more

We have stayed at the RV park several times over the past few years. We LOVE the place! Yes, it is sort of funky and old fashioned kind of place, but that is part of the charm. for some place that used to be such a huge part of the small community they are now trying really hard to keep everybody out. i understand how one bad incident can ruin it for everybody and clearly that has happened here. i blew off all the bad things i've heard about what it has become in the last few years, i just thought people had just gotten angry over stupid shit... and as i'm planning the wedding i have always dreamed of, wanted to have my reception at the hot springs... since its been a part of my family since the 1800s and my grandmother was born there and i thought it was still run by "family". i just offered to rent every camp spot and every hotel room for 3 days, a year from now, and pay up front, and was turned down because "they don't do that".....dont have guests? dont rent rooms? dont host events? cuz i thought tha'ts what they DID? they clearly don't like money? Bob Hammond would be ashamed. sad. and my wedding plans are ruined. FOR NOW. good thing i started early....I guess i wont spend my money in Custer County. read more

Had the pleasure of visiting twice to dip in the hot springs this October. $7.50 for day use and $1 for a towel seemed like a great deal to me. They have a large outdoor rectangular swimming pool that ranges in temperature from warm to hot. I heard from another patron that in the summer they mix in more cool water to keep the temperature refreshing. The main pool is about 4 feet deep across the length, with two sets of cement stairs and a rail to make it easy to get in. Adjacent are separate men and women changing areas that keep out the cold while you get out of your swim suit, nice. There are also two bathrooms with showers. I'm sure families will enjoy the amenities. A short walk from the main pool is an enclosed building over a smaller and much hotter pool. Again, cement steps and a rail make getting in and out a breeze. The grounds themselves have a country charm to them, with an old farmhouse as the center piece. I didn't use the RV facilities, but they have a group of them along the salmon river that looked quite picturesque. The staff was super friendly and helpful when I needed to plug in my laptop and later when I needed to do some work by the pool. They have wifi and a decent internet connection which was very welcome as I plied my trade for a few hours in between dips. Another gem in the Challis area, this is definitely worth a stop anytime they're open. They do close for the winter, so call ahead to make sure they're open. read more
