This office is so poorly run, save yourself the headache and do NOT go here. My husband and I are new to town and this was the only in-network dentist we could find (blue cross blue shield). It took months to get an appointment and when we finally did, they weren't actually able to tell me the dentist's name (I wanted to double triple check with my insurance that it would be covered). When I arrived, I asked the front desk to confirm that the specific dentist would be in-network and they said yes they definitely were. The appointment itself was fine, the hygienist was nice and I saw the dentist for all of 30 seconds. Now comes the surprise! They billed my insurance 3 times (?!) for 2 OUT-of-network appointments. Apparently neither my dentist nor my husband's were actually in-network. After some back and forth with the office, they offered to adjust my bill to reflect only what my insurance was reimbursing me since the mistake was on their end. I paid that amount and figured it was done. I then started receiving bills in the mail for the previous amount. I called to ask why but the woman I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about and just said she'd send it for an audit. This cycle then repeated itself about 4 times as they cycled through new office staff, each time starting from square one. At this point I've spent 10+ hours on the phone with this office trying to sort this out over the course of more than a YEAR. These were just your standard, run-of-the-mill cleaning appointments at a supposedly in-network dentist. It really shouldn't be this complicated. But I just received another call today from their office, this time threatening to send me to collections if I don't pay more than we originally discussed. Of course, everything we've "agreed to" has been over the phone so I have no proof of what they've promised. I have never had such a frustrating encounter with a dentist office in all my life. What a mess. I booked my appointment 6 weeks in advance. I gave them my insurance info at that time. I confirmed twice via text and once over the phone my appointment. I received a call less than 24 hours before my scheduled appointment that they didn't carry my insurance, even though the insurance website said they did. I was also put on hold several times because the lady didn't understand whatever was in my file. Seems very unprofessional and not organized. read more

Champaign Dental Group has either cancelled (without notifying us) or mis-scheduled appointments for our family twice. Both times they confirmed the appointment via text, but then later told us that we DIDN'T have an appointment at that same date and time! Most recently, the receptionist adamantly denied ever sending us confirmation texts...even though that confirmation text was sitting right there on the phone. While we understand scheduling mishaps can happen, and are rarely the type of folks to complain, I do think getting schedules right is one of the most basic parts of any service or patient care. Champaign Dental Group's unwillingness to admit that the mistake was on their end, not our family's, is irritating as well. It seems like we're not the only ones to have experienced these kinds of inexplicable scheduling issues, based on some of the reviews here. The practice will run insurance first. I love that I know what is covered and what isn't. I never walk in not knowing what I will owe for the visit. The dentist has even given discounts to help with the cost of out pocket expenses. I have had a root canal, filling, and I am in the process of a crown. Never a bad experience. According to them I need 5 filings, two root canals, AND they want to take out all my wisdom teeth (which came in comfortably and are not causing any problems). Yeah, sure... Like many other reviewers, I have suffered some bad experiences at Champaign Dental. As a college student with limited funds, I admit that I usually ignore my dental health, at least when it comes to regular visits to the dentist. Our student insurance luckily covers dental costs, so I thought it would be a good time to get a check-up, especially because I hadn't seen a dentist in over 4 years. During my initial visit, I had a pleasant time with the hygienist, who shared stories and was generally careful and attentive with my teeth. However, she called in the doctor to look at my teeth, and they both confirmed that I required a deep-cleaning. I was a bit horrified and thought this was my punishment for evading the dentist for years, as the doctor explained that my gums were now completely infected by bacteria that could ruin my jaw if I didn't have it treated. They said the cost to repair the damage would be about $1,800, and they started pressing me when I looked apprehensive. My dental insurance didn't cover such expenses. I explained that I couldn't pay for the costs on my own, but--no problem for them! Why? They had a dedicated loan counselor on staff (seem fishy to anyone else?) who whisked me out of the patient room and had me sign a loan for the procedure on the spot. I know I should have been more assertive, but I was very shaken about threats that my jaw would rot off within a year. After a long and painful procedure in which the doctor injected pain-killer in my mouth and then scraped the teeth under my gums, I was told I would have to come back for regular follow-ups each month to make sure the deep-cleaning had worked. When I came back for a follow-up shortly afterward, I was charged $100 (again, not covered by insurance)! The follow-up took less than 10 minutes and consisted of the hygienist poking around my mouth, which certainly didn't seem worthy of $100. I finally gave up on Champaign Dental at that point, regretful that I didn't trust my initial gut instincts. read more

I've never had a cavity in my whole life. Upon my first visit to Champaign Dental Group, I was told that I had two cavities. Due to some new insurance issues at the time, CDG agreed to wait to fill them until the insurance would cover the fillings. I went home and a few days later, typed CDG into Google to get reviews. I admit, I was suspicious about the fact that I suddenly had cavities. Well, surprise, surprise....MANY people have been told they have cavities (some 10 or more) and later find out that they do not. I am terrified of needles. So, most of my fear around getting cavities filled is the giant needles they use to numb your mouth. I was beyond relieved when I got to leave that day...and then enraged that they would've subjected me to said needles AND drilled into my teeth when there was no cavity. I went to another dentist for a second opinion. Lo and behold: No cavities. I was told that CDG often finds "cavities" where there are none, because they have very high tech, sensitive equipment that measures tooth density. When the equipment says there's a weakness in the tooth, CDG takes that as being a cavity, when it could just be a weak spot to be strengthened with fluoride. This place is more about making money than it is about dental care. Of course it is a business and needs to make money but it doesn't seem that they care about the patient at much as the money they may bring. They bombard you with all the things that you have to did and everything is very serious if you don't do it right then and there. In the very short while I visited them, I had 2 wisdom teeth pulled, and like 4 crowns. Mind you that I went there for teeth cleaning and nothing was wrong with me. Got X-rays done, they kept saying he had cavities but refused to show them to him on the x-Rays. They didn't even do the cleaning, gave him a rough total for work he will need of over $600 and we had to pay a $60 dental visit. Funny because our insurance covers visits, and fillings! I just went to an out of state office, got a cleaning, an exam, and a filling, walked out paying nothing! I will be calling my insurance about this and reporting this "dentistry" and contacting these fools about this too, I just wish we had looked at all the reviews on here where people got screwed over by these people. Just spoke with our insurance about this practice, not much they can do after the office has wrongfully taken your money. Our insurance covers everything they said my husband had to pay and that insurance wouldn't pay for. Also they said I'm not the first person to call and report this office. Going to have records transferred elsewhere. I guess that's how the doctor affords that real nice car he has, by taking from his patients. Every other dentist in town I researched (after my billing nightmare here) manages to do routine checkups and cleaning using my Delta Dental insurance with $0 out of pocket (I checked with my coworkers on this, who have the same insurance). I've been very happy with them in the past, but definitely not impressed at the moment. I called this morning to confirm an appointment, and was told that it was confirmed. Then in the afternoon I get a call saying "There was a miscommunication, and that appointment is no longer available." I tried to be cool about it, but since I can't go in for morning appointments I had to get rescheduled for Sept. 3 - practically a month from now. I've been coming here for 6 years. The staff is nice and they're usually efficient. I receive email and text notifications to remind me of my appointments which I appreciate. Sometimes they offer referral rewards for certain services which can save some money. Christina is a great hygienist! She's fast, thorough and gentle. My regular doctor just left so I can't really give a fair review for the new one, Dr. Goyal, but he didn't find any cavities so good for me! Dr. Colin was a great doctor who is now at a new location in Austin, TX. I would recommend him. I think I've had 4 hygienists here and all but one have been personable and gentle. I've had nothing but positive results so far with Champaign Dental, but I can see how they might get pushy with people who aren't familiar with what their insurance does and does not cover. Case in point: they keep sending me notices for 3-month updates--I don't know of ANY dental insurance that pays for 4 dental checkups a year! Like Heather T mentioned, Champaign Dental uses a more thorough check-up system than other dentists I have used, which includes measuring the density of your teeth to check for cavities. This may explain why many people who haven't had cavities before find one when they go there (or it may be a scam, who knows). I really enjoy the dental hygienist I see. Her technique is great, and my visits are quick and painless. Dr. Kuo is great as well. I have an extremely rare type of dental bridge, and as he's the ONLY dentist in town who has any experience with one, I don't really have the option of seeing anyone else. If I had other options I would probably explore them, but as long as I know what my insurance covers and am firm about what treatments I will and will not accept, I haven't had any problems. read more

I had a great experience here. I went in because a filling fell out and I had no paid. They had a $40 emergency visit special that included X-rays. I went in on time. It only took me about 15 mins to have X-rays and see dr kuo with a diagnosis. He said I would probably need a root canal but he would do everything he could during the procedure to avoid it and save the tooth. I got an estimate in office within 5 mins. I have no dental insurance so I knew it would be pricey. Came back the same day for the fix which did turn into a root canal. It was completely pain free. Even the shots of Novocain. Dr. Kuo is very knowledgeable and personable. He explained everything to me before the procedure. They checked multiple times to make sure I was still numb. I was very pleased with my visit. I hate the dentist and had them prescribe me a Valium to ease the anxiety. I would defiantly go back to their office. read more

I wish I can give zero star! I should have read the reviews here before I went there for 3 times. Yes, I strongly agree the other person's review- they are hungry money hungry thieves! The first time I went there, I said my insurance covers two free tooth cleaning. I want to do once. Then they did the cleaning. After, they said, I need to pay $68 for today's service! I said I am here for the free cleaning! They said, oh, you had periodontal cleaning which is not covered by your insurance as free one. This is not the first time they try to get money out of your pocket! And the second time, I went there and also told them, I just need a cleaning covered by my insurance (free to me because my insurance provides 2 free cleaning ). After it was done, I was told, ok, it was another periodontal cleaning, you need to pay another $68. The last time I had another service, they said, you only need to pay this amount to meet your insurance deductible. After weeks of the service, they sent me another bill says I need to pay more than I have paid on the date of service. They cheated me on the date of service, to have you agreed on the service, so they can charge more. Then they send bills later of the service date. All this dental group is doing is to cheat patients, to get more money out of their pocket. Never ever go to this one! I regret that I went there 3 time before I recognized how awful this office is!. read more

I was told I needed 4 teeth extracted. I had the work done and the dentist left a root in my mouth. I had to go back and have my gum cut open again and the root removed These procedures were agony and all for almost $1,000 . I will never return to this place read more

I will give the warning that I didn't actually get to see a dentist here. First of all, there was some discrepancies about when I should show up for my appointment. When I first scheduled my appointment, I was told to show up 15 minutes early which is the time that I put in my calendar. When I received my reminder phone call, I was told a time that was 20 minutes later than what I put in my calendar. I thought it was strange but figured I must have made a mistake so I showed up at the later time. When I got there, I had tons of paperwork (btw....since when does the dentist need your social security number?) to fill out which they seemed annoyed that I didn't show up earlier (even though they told me to show up later). They also hadn't sorted out things with my insurance company. They insisted that they could not bill my insurance company and that I pay up front and ask for reimbursement later. I thought this was very odd so I insisted on calling my insurance company there. This whole process ended up taking so long that I ended up having to reschedule my appointment. It took me just a few minutes to sort things out with my insurance company once I got home. I just wish that if they had issues, they would have called me to let me know ahead of time so I didn't have to worry about it when I got there. I will add that they were very kind about letting me bring my bike inside since there's not really any bike parking outside. But, I think I'd rather go to a dentist office that has their act together and is a bit more organized. read more

I currently am a student at Illinois State University, originally from the Champaign area, but currently live in Bloomington-Normal. I drove an hour to come to my appointment (that they have been texting me and emailing me about for the past 2 weeks, I even got one today reminding me about my appointment.) I walk in and the receptionist tells me they can't help me today and they have called me multiple times and left voicemails. The last voicemail I received was December 14th, and it was not from them. Since I'm not longer a patient (moved) I feel like I should share my experience. They told me at one point that I had 8 cavities. Then they never said anything about them again. I had a root canal done and the dentist had to go see other patients during the root canal. I was there for HOURS (more than the normal time to get a root canal done) If you're doing a root canal why can't the other dentist step in during that time to see other patients? I feel like they always told me I needed more work done just get more money from my insurance. I guess I should have found another dentist, but at the time I didn't have so much time to look around (due to work). This office made and loaded a crown for one of my teeth in 2012 and recently in 2016, the filling of the crown broke! I moved out of Champaign in 2015. When I checked with my local dentist in Seattle, they told me they need to remake the crown. I called Champaign Dental Group 2 times to ask if they would cover the cost for a new crown and they simply never called me back. Finally, the 3rd time I called, they said that since I haven't checked my teeth with them in the last 6 months, they won't cover any cost! There is a reason why their reviews are so bad... read more

No idea why I went back several times. They have gotten me to do unnecessary procedures and seem greedy and very pushy. The other day they got my to stay for a filling. I waited in the chair 30 minutes then got 2 numbing shots. The first shot she put way back, too far into jaw. It hit a nerve and was so painful . I got another shot 30 minutes later and it took 30 seconds to do my filling. I don't think I needed it. It's been a few days and I still can't open my jaw without stabbing pain from where that first shot went. I can't eat anything without severe pain. SCAM ARTISTS, plain and simple. The folks that run this place are cashing in on people who trust their white lab coats. Stay far away from here and Illini Dental, Creative Smiles, Dentistry by Design, Affordable Dentistry Today, Baytowne, and Hessel Park Dentistry - all owned and run by the same guy I went for a preventive cleaning - the hygienist goes through the normal routine, and then calls in an assistant. They both poke around and make concerned noises, and tell me that I REALLY need to get a deep-clean root planing. I have never heard of this. They call in the dentist, who says Absolutely, you have to have this done immediately or you're looking at a root canal within a year. I ask how much this will cost me, they say "Oh, only $1000 or so." They also try to sell me on veneers and a $300 bite guard because I grind my teeth. I say I can't afford any of that, so I am whisked straight from the chair, into a small office and onto the phone with Capitol One's Medical Loan people. They also still tried to sneak the veneers and bite guard onto my "treatment plan." Long story short, this VERY painful procedure was completely unnecessary, and they do it only to make money, since no insurance covers it. The wonderful dentist I see now says they've heard about CDG pulling this all the time, and it's just a matter of time until they get sued for it. read more

The dentist never actually came in the room. I got his "diagnosis" secondhand via the hygienist or assistant. I was in the waiting room longer than I was in the chair. They also were supposed to call the dentist to ask a question about the previous dental work I had on the tooth I was there for. Instead, they came back with the amount I owed the previous dentist! DO NOT GO HERE. This place is a scam. All the other highly negative reviews here reflect my experiences. I went here when I was an undergrad, and had a horrible experience. In the checkup, they performed many unnecessary procedures that were not covered by my insurance, without telling me. Oral cancer screening for an 18 year old non-smoker? Really? I had never had a cavity in my life, and they said they found 3. Naively, I didn't get a second opinion and let them fill the "cavities". I ended up spending huge amounts of money for probably unnecessary dental procedures. Another reviewer got it right: this is not so much a dental practice, as a business whose model is to funnel the maximum amount of money out of UIUC students. Medically speaking, some of their behavior borders on malpractice. I'm pretty sure that knowingly misdiagnosing patients to maximize profit falls in that arena. read more

Seven fillings in three years...never before have I had my teeth drilled so much. To make matters worse, twice I had to get fillings redone because Dr. Jeffrey Collin didn't do it correctly the first time. I'm finding another place and hoping that there hasn't been irreparable damage done to my teeth. The dentist says I may need a root canal, because he's drilled down one of my teeth so far and now it's causing me pain... On a better note, the hygienist, Mandi, is wonderful. However, for the sake of my teeth, I need to find a better dentist. Oh, and the group that the other reviewer was talking about that is Heatland Dental Care, which runs a whole series of clinics, Champaign Dental included. I will avoid them all as well. read more

Though I generally don't put much stock in Yelp reviews, I may need to reconsider after my trip to Champaign Dental Group. Background information: I have severe anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist and, as such, am unlikely to book an appointment unless I am in a considerable amount of pain (hence my booking this appointment, despite being terrified). Everything started off well--I called and was given a same-day appointment, and one of the dental hygienists even called me back and told me I could come in early if I so chose. When I got there, the receptionists and hygienists were polite and professional--I explained my dental-related issues, and they seemed both empathic and understanding. Then, Dr. Colin came in. Upon seeing that I was noticeably anxious/upset and struggling to articulate myself, he immediately said: "okay, refer her to Dr. Escobar." I was flabbergasted. Never before have I been treated so poorly by someone who was supposed to HELP me. If you're unable or unwilling to at least feign empathy with your patients who are extremely anxious/terrified to go to the dentist in the first place, you should probably rethink your occupation. It would greatly behoove Dr. Colin to learn an iota of compassion and understanding. Like I said, I have never been treated so poorly by someone who is (ostensibly) a professional. I gave this place 2 chances before firing them as my dentist. Being a graduate student on the graduate student dental plan, I did not have many options as who my dentist would be. I regret chosing Champaign Dental Group. My first negative experience was when a dental assistant tried fitting me for whitening trays. He clearly had never done this before because the mixture was way too hard and he was using a tray too big for my mouth. The result was SEVEN attempts of putting the trays in my mouth and removing them and subsequent severe cuts in my mouth. I was called back the next day because the impression was not good enough to make a mold out of and had to redo the entire process again. Already not happy about my experience at Champaign Dental Group, I went ahead and scheduled my next appointment 6 months in advance. I recieved a card with my appointment time and was had a reminder call 2 days before my scheduled appointment. When I arrived my appointment was no where to be found and my dentist wasn't even working that day. This place is just alright. I always get the feeling that I am at a used car lot with them trying to sell me on invisalign, teeth whitening or electric toothbrushes. I will say the hygienist I saw was pretty good which is why I didn't give this place one star. She has a technique where the shots do not hurt too bad. Do not go here! Champaign Dental Group is a commercial business intended to exploit students. It is NOT a regular dental practice. They're more interested in pushing services and making money than most regular dental offices. The people are nice, the hygienists are good, but the business is structured in such a way that they all have incentives to sell you on as many services and products as possible. That is fine for an electronics store in the mall - it is NOT fine for a medical office, where all procedures have risks and leave permanent changes to your body. I haven't had a cavity in years. Dr. Collins insisted that all my fillings had to be replaced. He also told me I had several cavities that needed to be filled. I asked whether it was urgent or whether I could wait a few months until my insurance kicked in. He told me if I waited a few months, I would probably need root canal. I didn't have any tooth pain and this all seemed shady, so I declined. Six months later, I went to an experienced dentist for a cleaning and a second opinion. No cavities, nothing wrong with my fillings. Everyone at Champaign Dental is very nice. But do not go here if you want an honest assessment of your teeth. read more

Don't go here. They have 309 ratings on their website with an average of 4.6 stars yet their Yelp review has 2 stars. They can also regulate what reviews make it on their website though they claim they're unbiased. My girlfriend went here to get her teeth cleaned and notified the dental hygienist that she did not want to get any services done that is not covered by her insurance. She made this clear 3 times. However they still asked her if she wanted to get an oral cancer screening and fluoride treatment. (Later we asked why bother asking if she made it clear she doesn't want any services not covered by insurance, as both of those services are not covered, and they answered because it's their standard of care and protocol to ask. "They have to ask", which is fair, but keep reading). At this point she made it clear again that she doesn't want anything outside of her insurance policy. Then they asked her again if she wanted both the fluoride and the oral cancer screening, this time making her a deal. (Again, we asked why bother asking a second time if they knew she didn't want the services, and they replied because they care about her enamel, lol! A desperate excuse). So at this point my girlfriend thought it was covered under her insurance since they did not say it wasn't covered even after she made it clear she only wanted what was covered by her insurance. She replied with "if it is covered under my insurance then why not". Instead of being honest and taking that opportunity to tell her it wasn't covered under her insurance they went through with it. After the procedure was over she realized she was charged for the fluoride treatment which she was confused about since she thought it was covered by her insurance. We spoke with the office manager who claimed that she understood what happened and basically claimed they made it very clear, giving us the textbook answer that everything was done for her best interest. I quickly exposed her flawed answer when I asked her why they asked her a second time after she said she didn't want anything outside of her insurance. Again only replying because they care about her teeth, lol! The office manager also "suggested" to cancel her next appointment and future business, basically kicking her out, which is fine by us but who does that?? Anyway she got manipulated into the fluoride treatment. If you go here just be overly skeptical about things they offer you like you would at a car mechanic. read more

My daughter has her wisdom tooth pulled on September 2016. She went to Champaign Dental Group, 217-398-2244, since it's close to school. She was literally in pain for 3 days, the pain was so bad she could not even open her mouth. She went back and the dentist tells her "Oh I should of gave you a prescription for penicillin." However, the dosage was low and didn't do anything to stop the pain. My daughter had to drive back home to Chicago to see our family dentist, which gave her an antibiotic to stop the infection she had. This place sucks, I cannot recommend this place. This place deserves Zero Stars for what my daughter went through. If you own a business you should try and give a crap about the patients you are caring for. read more

I don't even know where to begin. I came in thinking I had a cavity or two. I left with the great news of "you have 5 cavities!" Keep in mind I haven't had a cavity since my baby teeth... Probably at least 10 years ago. Also, as of 4 months ago, my teeth were perfect, according to my dentist at home. Dr. Colin scared me into thinking I'd need a root canal if I didn't get all of these filled within the next week or so, and I didn't have a chance to go home during the week for my regular dentist there to look. So of course I was terrified of getting a root canal, so I made my appointment to get my fillings done. That all went fine, but the hygienist suggested I get sealants on the teeth that didn't have any cavities or else I'd be prone to getting more. So I said yes. They didn't clean my teeth before doing the sealant, let alone wash and dry them off. Now I'm just scared of getting decay underneath the 10 teeth with sealants on them. Two, maybe 3 of the cavities were from "not flossing as regularly as I should have been." Ironically enough, the hygienist sealed my teeth together in two spots, making it impossible to floss between those teeth. I went to my regular dentist at home over thanksgiving break and she said what they did was total "bull." The cavities between my teeth were bull, the cavities in general were bull (because they could have easily been discoloring or just grooves that appeared to be cavities), and she has never suggest sealants before because I was never, ever prone to cavities. She said in July, my teeth were perfect and there was no way brushing regularly could form cavities that bad in 3 months. So moral of the story, get a second opinion before doing something permanent or else your teeth that your dentist said make you look like a "beauty queen" will be ruined forever. :( do NOT go here!!!!!!! read more

Best dental experience of my life! I hate going to the dentist, despise it even. From the noise to the taste, it's all a nightmare for me, but Shelly my hygienist and Dr. Kuo the actual dentist made my visit amazingly positive. The best part was that they even took my insurance without having to pay anything up front (unlike at other places that make you pay first, then get reimbursed later). Because of this latter fact, I have told all my coworkers about it! True, they do offer a lot of services that aren't covered, but they are just doing their job, you don't have to accept any of them, but to treat myself I got the fluoride treatment for only $25! I even learned a lot more about my mouth than my other dentist so I am now a super fan of flossing, brushing right, and eating things that are healthy for my teeth. I can't say that any other office made me feel as enthusiastic about caring for my teeth as this place. Plus they have the spit sucker instead of the little bowl on the side of your chair which means you can barely taste any of the junk they put in your mouth. Definitely recommend! read more
