After painful experiences trying to schedule cleanings (I made an appointment online - then receive calls from the receptionist threatening to cancel if I don't call and confirm) we finally had cleanings. I was presented with an estimate for two crowns and other procedures I did not request. I reviewed the estimate and called my insurance company to confirm it was accurate - it was not. I took the estimate back into the office and the billing admin (Treasure) seemed very annoyed and blamed the errors on the receptionist (Monique). I asked for an updated estimate - never received one. I asked them to send my insurance company an estimate so I can at least have a more accurate estimate of what I will be paying - it's been 4 business days and they have sent nothing. Unfortunately, my experience at the Champaign Aspen dental was poor. Dr. Phillips promised to make sure I was happy with what I was purchasing however, the final result was not what I signed off on. Dr. Phillips was not interested in remaking the denture like he had previously told me he would if I was not happy. While, most of the dental assistants are very kind. The denture tech was not. Actually, she is sort of a bully. After several appointments, I ultimately left without the product. Somehow, even after Dr. Phillips assured me he would not be charging me for anything I've since received a bill. While, Dr. Phillips seems to be very nice this changes quickly if you don't agree with him. At that point he becomes condescending and plain rude. If you're at all worried about not getting a quality denture, you should consider a different location. read more

I went to this dentist after almost a decade of not seeing one as I have a severe anxiety disorder of which I informed them. During the procedure, the older black dentist was so unprofessional I couldn't believe it( he was laughing and chatting with the assistant, spraying water up my nose- this has never happened before. I also have never experienced any pain after get my upper teeth numbed when getting work done before, but now there is always a dull pain in my sinus right above one of the teeth he worked on- Google says it's nerve damage that may or may not go away- mine has not. You have to sign a waiver as well so they're not liable I'm guessing. To top it off, the work he did is literally coming undone: bonding to protect the very weak enamel on my teeth is literally coming off 6 months later. I'm too scared to go back there and too broke now to see anyone else- please don't go to a retail dentist, private practices are the safest bet. I wanted my bottom teeth fixed so they were even. Had a bottom partial that needed to be worked around. So crowns were recommended. They were nicely done and then to my amazement another partial was needed. So another unexpected expense. This new partial did not work and was filed down several times but still cannot fit in with the crowns. So there is still missing teeth on the bottom because the partial will not fit. Am going to a private dentist for help. It seems obvious they cannot fix this new partial to work. Everyone was nice. But seemed out of their league to finish the project. read more

First, I have nothing bad to say about the dentist or hygienists that I received care from at Aspen. They were all professional. However, the experience I had with the way they handle their billing was terrible. After I received my care and paid, I was assured that my balance was at zero. Surprisingly, about six moths later, I received a bill. It was disappointing that I had to spend time dealing with it but I tried to be patient because I understood that a lot of places were short staffed due to the pandemic. I was told, at that time, that it was paid in full. I was even provided with a print out of my account that showed a zero balance. A couple of weeks ago (about year after my dental work was done), I received another bill stating that I had a balance. When I went in this time, I was told that I owed the amount on the second bill and whoever I spoke to the last time was wrong. I had the balance print out from the last time with me, but the person I was referred to this time glanced at the papers (did not make an attempt to read it) and repeated that she didn't know who I spoke to before but I owed a balance. This experience left me feeling like a customer in a badly run retail business with bad customer service, not a valued patient in a professional environment that provides medical care. To be clear, this wasn't a large amount of money. A part of the reason I went in person both times, was to see how it was handled so that I could judge whether I should continue being a patient there since I had good experiences with the providers. The first time, it was handled well by the receptionist who was pleasant and polite. This most recent time, I was told to wait for office manager (who I presume was the person I spoke to) but she did not really seem to care to do anything to help me feel better about the experience. After paying, I asked her to close my account there. She assured me I was paid in full and I wouldn't be receiving any communication from them in the future. read more

My son had a filling in his front tooth about 5 months ago and his tooth is literally about to fall out. They said they would call me back and never did. I called again and they said it could be taken care of at my already scheduled visit. They called to cancel visit because hygienist is not there today. I said OK, I would reschedule the cleaning, but will keep the appt with the dentist for my cracked tooth. We made appt to get a consult and comparing providers. We tell them we have electronic images of the teeth in questions and are not signing anything until we meet all potential providers. We do show them proof of insurance. They take patient into room, take a image of tooth, which I asked "was image included in consult?", and talk to doctor for maybe 2 minutes. We don't sign anything, visit our other possible providers, and call back Aspen to say we selected another provider. Two weeks later, we learn they submitted based on our proof of insurance a bill for the image they took. We call and ask, reminding we had images available electronically. They said this is their process. They are not transparent in their communication or billing. They are unwilling to remove charge. Does not value patients. So I chose Aspen Dental because they are occasionally open on Saturdays and, according to them when I called the # on the website to set up an appointment, they can do root canals, which is what my regular dentist (who cannot do root canals) told me I needed. I love that you get email reminders about your visit, that is a nice touch. Upon arriving I quickly filled out my paperwork and was called to come back after only about 15 minute wait which isn't half bad for a dentists office! Unfortunately the dental assistant taking my xrays seemed like a complete green horn. He was very nice but it took quite a while because he kept trying to figure out what to do. I also noticed what appeared to be blood spatter on the xray machine ... Old and crusted ... That made me feel rather apprehensive and the device he used to stick in my mouth for the xrays wasn't even sprayed down ahead of time he just pulled it out of the drawer that had a little basket inside it containing several ubwrapped , seemingly unsanitary instruments that get shoved into peoples mouths (also pictured below) In the end after the actual dentist saw me, she was very nice and informative, but she told me she needed to refer me SOMEWHERE ELSE because they don't do root canals. I already paid another dentist to tell me this ... And I came here because prior to making an appointment ... They said ... "YES! WE DO ROOT CANALS!!" it was a fancy establishment that, to me, appeared to need a reminder on what "sanitary" means. The staff was very nice ... I went here for a crown and I never saw the same dentist twice. The first one did the mold. The second one put it on and he dropped the crown on the floor and picked it up and put it on. I noticed my bite was off so I called and they got me in to see yet another dentist. He drilled the back of the front teeth and left them feeling awful. Now my bite is off and ruining my front teeth alignment. I am going to another dentist to hopefully get this corrected. This place is terrible, avoid at all cost. I had an active tooth infection with pain but they spent two months on crowns that I didn't need urgently. They wasted my time and my money and the infected tooth now needs a root canal which takes over a thousand dollars. Since they wasted all my insurance money on crowns that don't even fit (and hurts), I can't do the root canal without paying over a thousand from my own pocket. They wasted my $500 from my own pocket and all my insurance money. Note that I haven't even mentioned the super-rude office staff... crowns, crowns, crowns. since they are expensive and they make a lot of money from it and relatively riskless, they push for crowns for everything whether you need it or not. crowns are solutions for everything in this place. there are several good dentists in Champaign, don't make the mistake of going here. read more

My 80 year old mother had tooth pain and needed to have an extraction. We scheduled an appointment with Aspen Dental for 9:15am the next morning. When we got there, on time, they had us in the waiting room for 15 minutes. At 9:30, they called my mother back to do a full set of X-Rays and sent her back up front. More waiting. They called her back again. This time, they did a full 3D image of her mouth and called the hygienist over, who did a full periodontal workup and recommended treatment for gum disease. Finally, the dentist (Dr. Thompson) came over and did an exam. He identified the tooth that needed to be pulled, but also recommended two more and a partial denture to cover for the teeth he said should be pulled. At that point, the office manager came over and got my mom out of the chair and led her back up to the front. She sat us down as if we were negotiating the price of a new car. She showed us the "treatment plan", which included the one extraction we came for, plus all the other things they wanted to do. The total came to almost $7,000! We said that all she wanted to do was have the tooth that was causing her pain removed. The office manager kept trying to negotiate/sell us additional care/services (for example, they had initially added an electronic toothbrush to the bill for $135, and then she offered to take it off to make it a little more affordable - but no one had agreed to purchase one in the first place) but eventually she agreed to just do the extraction that day. She explained that payment for services is required in full, up front, which we then paid. Good to go, right? Wrong. She then said, "When would you like to schedule that for?" What?!! We had a 9:15am appointment, and at this point it was about 11:15. I had driven 2 hours to take my mother to her appointment that day, so I said, "Uh, how about now? I am here today to help her get this done." The office manager said, "I can schedule you at 1:00pm. That would allow you to go home or go have lunch, because she probably won't want to eat for a while afterward." My mother asked, "Can we just wait here? How long of a wait is it if we just wait here?" The office manager said she would check to see how long it would be and came back reporting that it would be about 90 minutes, which would be about 12:45, or we could schedule the appointment for 1:00. Completely baffled that our 9:15 appointment now somehow had become a 1:00pm appointment, we agreed to come back at 1:00, which we did. When we got back at 1:00, we were once again made to wait, this time until almost 1:30pm. They took her back to a room and I waited in front, thinking the worst was likely over. Wrong. About 30 minutes later, an assistant came and asked me to come back to the room, remarking as we went, "there's no problem." Actually, there WAS a problem. Apparently, the dentist that was assigned to do the extraction lacked the skill to actually do it. They had to call another dentist who was out of the office to come in to do it. While we waited for him to finish his parent-teacher conference for his son and come to the office to do the extraction, my mother was left sitting in a chair with gauze in her mouth. No one came to give her updates on the situation. No one thought that the anesthetic might begin to wear off or that she might be uncomfortable or in pain. I went up front two or three times asking for an update. One of the women up front attempted to say that she had explained the situation to my mom and that she was just going to have to be patient. I didn't argue with her because I didn't want this place to take it out on my mom, but she couldn't have been any less helpful or compassionless. Finally, the anesthetic did wear off and the pain was excruciating, driving my poor mom to tears. I couldn't take it any more and went to request that they at least numb her back up so she wasn't suffering. These people were clueless. Most of them seem to think they're in sales instead of personal/healthcare and have very little understanding or awareness outside of selling super expensive treatment plans that people don't want or even need. They get you in the chair and then get you back OUT of the chair to talk price and then have you pay for everything before they will even do anything for you. That may be the business model for Aspen, but it's a horrible experience for patients. Also, I know that things happen, but how do you staff an office with one dentist that can't pull a tooth? Why were there no other dentists there? Poor management? Poor staffing? Both? Anyway, the other dentist finally arrived (it was Dr. Thompson again, who had examined my mom in the morning, and must have been scheduled to have the afternoon off), and I will say this much: He is a good dentist, and he was sympathetic, patient, kind, and effective. He pulled the tooth, stitched her back up and wrote her scripts for pain meds and antibiotics, and we were on our way. At 4:15PM! Horrible day! read more

If there were 0 star, I would choose it. I've been there twice. The service was OK. But every time after the visit, I received extra bill via mail. Despite the out of pocket portion I paid during the visit, there's EXTRA I need to pay every time (~$150). This is not right, how can you tell clients a price and then send them another bill to pay extra?! I called in but they just said "We cannot control what your dental insurance covers, you need to reach out to them" repeatedly. Estimation? Nobody told me it's just an estimation. Plus, how can they make wrong "estimation" EVERY time? I was told they would be working on the bill and see what they could do. My second visit was just a regular cleaning, but the billing person told me it was not, and they did some extra deep cleaning which is ridiculous as the front desk or the dentist never told me about it. Aspen Dental claims to handle Dental Emergencies. It was a Saturday and our Dentist office was closed. Arrived as soon as they un locked the door at 8 am. Son had an excruciating toothache. We went in as a walk in, another service they advertise, but Apen Dental wouldn't even see him. Could not fit him in. I'd say that is false advertisement. All it would have took was an xray, examination of the tooth causing the pain and writing a prescription. 30 minute appointment, if that long. I worked in Oral Surgery at Christie Clinic years ago and we always had to work past closing time because Dr. E would never let anyone suffer. I took him to the ER and he was prescribed a antibiotic. His pain was tolerable 6 hours later and will help him until he can see his Dentist Monday. How can you turn away someone who is suffering so much? Never, would I recommend this chain. I came here for the first time to get a check up and a cleaning... They charged me my copay upfront ofv$40. Then they took me back to get xrays. Afterward they put me in the dental chair and it took the hygienist 1 hour to see me... She comes in, stabs my gums between each tooth calling out numbers... BUT, shortly after the office proceeded to call me multiple times a day, as well as text and leave numerous voicemails. I am a full time student. They wouldn't stop calling while I was in lecture!! So disrespectful! And I couldn't call them back to tell them to stop either because I was IN LECTURE! Then they called me AGAIN while I was at WORK to let me know they would cancel the appointment if I didn't confirm it, even though I already had!! If I could give this outfit negative stars I would. If the dental work you are considering has any pain involved, rethink using this place. I went in at 6:00p to get two molars pulled. After it was done asked the dentist for pain meds. She told me she didn't think I would need them and that OTC pain killers should do the trick. Well, they didn't. After a night of almost no sleep, I called when they opened (8:15a) the following morning to ask for pain meds. I was told they would call them in right away. At 12:30p I went to pick up my prescription. Not only had it never been called in, when I called the office I was told the Dr had just then gotten around to approving it. I go to Aspen Dental because of my insurance discount...for cleanings and exam every six months. So far, I have not had any major dental issues...thank heavens. I make my appointments 6 months in advance -- and then you receive emails/texts from Aspen reminding you of your appointment. I get there early for a 10 a.m. appointment and wait for more than 20 minutes for a cleaning. When my dental hygienist asked to use a water pik to clean the teeth, I agreed. Won't do that again...Water everywhere. You have to hold the water suction instrument while she cleans. All in all, I am satisfied, but wish there weren't a long wait and let the staff know you don't want the add-ons for the visit. read more
