Nice ride over. And back to the island. I don't like large bodies of water but riding this ferry does not scare me.

I had never taken a car ferry before (and especially not one over an international border) so this…read morewas quite the experience. Googlwle maps directed me here because apparently the border crossings in Detroit and Port Huron were backed up Friday afternoon. I thought there was a bridge here. Imagine my surprise when I saw it was a ferry. I just missed the boat as it was just pulling away from the dock. The US border agent thought that the ferry captain might actually turn around to pick me up. Alas that didn't happen. I asked the US border agent when it would be coming back. He said it comes back as soon as they load up on the other side. So I decided to wait (I was first in line after all.). I grabbed a seat in one of the numerous Adirondack chairs along the river and just enjoyed the cool breeze and took in the view of the river. It was about 45 minutes 1 before the ferry came back, unloaded, and reloaded with vehicles on the us side. You never get out of your car the whole time. You pay the ferry an when he comes up to your car window whole bat sea. $12 cash or charge. On the Canadian side, you drive off the boat and are greeted by one of the 6 or so Canadian border agents. You present your passport (or passport card in my case), they ask you a few questions and you're on your way. The whole experience is quite pleasant. Unlike crossing in Detroit, you're not stick in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour idling and inhaling fumes. You can scrotal get up and walk around before boarding the ferry. The trip itself only takes about 10 minutes. The only downside is that you have to pay and there is no duty-free shop. Totally worth it.

We waited in line about 30 minutes only to be told that when we were about to drive in the ferry. To say this was frustrating is an understatement. We wasted HOURS of our night when we could have just driven to Port Huron and crossed there. They need to make this policy known- and not make it a surprise.

For cars it's $8 but if you just ride your bike on board, it's free! The owner of Prior's Plumbing across the street let us park in his lot since it was after hours, and from there it was just a stone's throw from the ferry dock. The ferry runs continuously from 6am to midnight. And I was told by a co-worker after midnight, it comes on the hour. We didn't have to wait long at all and before we knew it we were on board right next to the cars and it's a quick zip on over to Harsen's Island. It can get a little bumpy when the ferry docks so hold on to your bike. I was told we didn't get the friendliest service going there (maybe because bikers ride free and there were a ton of us) and were told to stay to the side to "avoid bloodshed" lol. I don't mind straight talk so all in all, no complaints. Was a quick easy process to get there and back.

When we arrived, the woman selling the tickets was genuinely friendly and interested in our dog. I love that this is a dog-friendly activity and that always gets extra bonus points with me. She asked our dog's name and answered all our questions and when we saw her hours later walking around the town she called out to our dog by name and said hello. It was very sweet and just one example of the warm welcoming spirit of this city. The cruise itself was very calm and slow. Just a smooth ride down the Cass River and back. There's lots of time to take in the scenery and you learn a lot. The gentleman narrating our tour was knowledgeable and had a great voice on the microphone. I actually thought it was a recording for the first few minutes, but he introduced himself and explained that his son was the boat captain. He shared the history of Frankenmuth and the surrounding area and when he tells you the popcorn they sell on board is the best you'll ever have, he's not lying. The popcorn was the surprise star of this cruise! For only $2 you get this bag of fresh salty delicious popcorn and they actually encourage you to toss some to the ducks on the river. It was really fun watching them Rush up to the boat and watching the children laughing and enjoying themselves. I love popcorn though so unfortunately the ducks had to share with me because it was definitely the best $2 popcorn I've ever had! This is a must if you're in Frankenmuth and I'm so glad we got to experience it. We had such a nice time that we bought some souvenirs on our way off the boat, including a little Captain's hat for my husband to match the one we had for our pup already. It really was a lovely time.
