As a departure from my usual routine of running, yoga and weight training, I went to go try a…read moreboxing class at Champs as the last studio for my 2018-2019 lululemon practice membership. Champs has some limited parking lots around the studio, and we were able to find free short term street parking during the class. The studio space is huge, with a large boxing ring (not used for the class I attended), lockers with their own locks, some retail, and change rooms for men and women. The change rooms had towels and private showers with some toiletries, which would be fantastic if you were heading out to work after. The studio rents hand wraps and gloves, although if I were to come regularly I would want my own wraps. The instructor of our class showed us how to wrap our hands before class, and I was very comfortable as a newbie. The class itself was in a large dark studio, and everyone has their own punching bag. Classes start with an overview of the six different punches, and then alternate between sequences on the bag and then floor exercises (squats, lunges, crunches). With the black lights and pounding music it really amped up the intensity, and also helped me feel less self conscious about keeping up or my less-than-perfect form. I wasn't sure if I would like the class but it was super fun. The 50 minutes passed by fast, and I didn't have any troubles keeping up with the instructor's cues for sequences and movement. It's mega stress relieving to hit something if you've got some pent up aggression, and the wraps and gloves do a great job of protecting your wrists and hands. I had a fantastic time, and got a pretty sweaty work out in.

Signing up for classes through champs is easy, as everything is on the "mindbody app". There are two intro deals: 2 classes for $30 or 2 weeks unlimited for $65. Classes individually are $23, 20 classes is $300 and a year's membership is $1750. The prices are high but they are pretty much right on par with other trendy workout studios and as per usual, you get what you pay for. The boxing studio is very nice and modern, with change rooms for men and women, and lockers with a built in combination locks. They provide sweat towels prior too and cool cloths for after your workout. I opted for the 2 classes for 30. With this, i received free handwraps. They also provide you with rental boxing gloves for the class. There is a boxing ring in the centre of the gym but do not be alarmed like i was if you think you have to spar! The class i took was called "KO 50 minute classic". It is located in a separate room where there are about 30 to 40 punching bags. Each person gets their own punching bag, of course. The room is a bit dim but sets the mood and i loved the music as it amped up everyone's workout. I felt like it was a comfortable environment as no one is critiquing your technique. The instructor goes through all basic moves and builds from there with combinations. Immersed in this are body weight exercises on the floor. I found it to be a very therapeutic workout and I plan to come back very soon!

If I could give zero stars I would…read more Even when I explicitly explained I could not use the facility for personal reasons at the height of COVID, I was granted "leaves of absences" and then had to continue paying throughout which was $85/month for a service I could not even use. You are locked in completely like a mortgage and similar to a bank, you are not pardoned if a payment is late and will be charged fees on top of it. Not like a BUSINESS versus a single adult needs that or anything. It took me having to cancel my credit card so they won't be able to continue to charge me. I truly wish I had never signed up, it has been nothing but grief and anguish for two solid years where the only focus has been MONEY. Quite honestly, the most horrific and HEARTLESS company and customer service I've ever had to deal with in my life. I strongly advise that this company re-evaluate your costs, and inflexible policies in the STRUGGLING times we are living in. I'll remind you that your patrons are human beings, not atm machines.

Getting the trial was seamless and so easy. When I arrived, the staff were super friendly and the paperwork was quick and easy. I was surprised to see I was the only one there to work out at 10 am. Part of me loves that- I often prefer to work out without distractions. The other part of me thought "aw, that's no fun!" A trainer walked me through each station and gave me fantastic tips and encouragement through the entire 30 mins. The workout itself is high intensity intervals (hence HIT) and focuses on kickboxing with an undertone of self defense training. I can get behind that. I loved that the workout was so quick, and totally ruined my body (and I'm used to working out regularly.) I can see how this would be a wicked option for people who are busy, but want to get a wicked workout/relieve some serious stress. The things I would change about this place would be their hours, and having a greater variety of stations. Their hours of operation are a little funky (they're closed in the afternoon) and I worry that I might get bored with the same stations! Too bad they don't have punch cards. Still thinking on whether I'm going to commit to a membership myself, but I definitely recommend checking it out! That trainer will kick your butt! I wish I could remember her name :(

I came for a group trial class last month and loved it!…read more If I lived southside I would be looking at drop in passes or membership here no doubt! The owner, Shara, taught us a group class and I loved it! She asked us about any injuries and took the time to come around and check in with us during our circuits for any modifications required. You'd be surprised how 30 second stations can kick challenge you yet leave you with enough energy to keep going. The warm up with the bands around our ankels, knees, and thighs was super challenging but also somehow stabilizing and didn't both my knees or back one bit! I loved the teamwork and atmosphere. The location is a bit off the beaten track in an industrial area but not a big deal. The inside is absolutely gorgeous! I noticed a sign that they also have "cold baths" and a "sauna." Sounds like the perfect way to end a workout here! I would absolutely recommend SVPT to anyone looking to challenge their fitness routine!

The other morning after some local MMA fights (and maybe a bit of overindulgence in the Strongbow…read moredepartment) I dragged my face off my pillow and joined my partner and other local mma fighter at SVPT to see what the hype is all about. I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Complete Martial Arts and Fitness alongside some of the best MMA fighters in the city, including a couple UFC fighters - they all do personal training at SVPT and only say the best things about owner Shara Vigeant and her facility. Upon my 9am arrival at the centre, I was greeted at the door by 2014 Global Women of Vision 2014 award recipient Shara herself. She was bright eyed and bushy tailed with a smile and showed me where to put my things. After taking a gander at the walls lined with signed glossies of winning athletes singing Shara and her trainers' praises, she had me sign a waiver and get right out on the turf. Our session started with a warmup. We did a bit of foam rolling, some stretches, box jumps, chucked a medicine ball around. I started breaking a sweat right away, but I wasnt uncomfortable. As we were working, Shara asked me about previous experience with working out, the gym, my jiu jitsu classes, etc. I am a complete beginner and have never experienced any form of serious gym workout or personal training. I was in for a treat! I had a great time sweating my ass of and hauling my weight around. I was amazed to see the strength and stamina of the athletes I was working alongside. The workout was quick paced and interesting. Absolutely challenging and even fun. I learned how to swing a kettle bell around, use some resistance bands, do squats with an elevated leg (tough one!) and even pushed a weighted sled back and forth - all the while thinking: My ass is gonna look great. The SVPT facility is incredible. Larger than I thought it would be and Immaculately clean. The air is fresh and moving, clean towels and access to water bottle refill station are available to clients. I'm no expert on what makes for up to date things at the gym, but the equipment seemed new, modern and well maintained. Half of the floor is green astroturf (all the better to push a sled across, i guess!) The garage style door at the back allows for natural light to come in as the sun comes up. After my session, I mopped the sweat from my head and headed towards the change room to shower and change. The beautiful modern change rooms were like walking into a washroom in a showhome - except times six! A line of sparkling showers with temperature controlled taps (not like the push-button, lukewarm and timed showers at gyms and pools) were closed in their own cubicles with private changing area. Clean sinks and well lit mirrors (even a little basket with some toiletries you may have forgotten) would make SVPT a great place to start your day and still be able to freshen up before work and taking on your day. (did I mention how clean it is? You know me... I like my public places clean!) All in all, I have to say I'm actually shocked that I appear to be the first review of this place! I had a great time, have nothing but great things to say about SVPT. Shara was an enormous help every step of the way, ensuring my posture was correct and pushing me to move forward. It was definitely a treat to see what all the fuss is about! I will make a habit out of this.
